The event's official livery of red, white and blue - the colours of the Union flag - firmly re-established with the founding principle that the event WILL NOT be used as a vehicle to penalise or fleece participating charities, by charging them more than members of the public to take part, regardless of how much they raise, through your hard work and generosity. The result being that more of the money you raise taking part in The British 10k London Run remains with the charity.

With the British Government under the leadership of David Cameron, making special plans to mark this occasion with the involvement of all from across Britain and around the world staging special commemorative events, both large and small. The British 10k London Run will play its part as uniquely all participants either pass very near or directly in front of a great many war memorials. BE PREPARED ON RACE DAY ARRIVE HYDRATED ON RACE DAY WITH A SPRING IN YOUR STEP ON-COURSE WATER STATIONS On course water stations are located at approx 3km, 5km, 7.5km with 330cl bottles and at the finish line with 500cl bottles. See pull-out map, centre spread showing water stations icon.

WARM UP AND COOL DOWN Before the race It’s race day. The adrenaline’s pumping. You’ve trained for this for months. There’s just one last bit of preparation left: your warm up. A proper warm up prepares your body for the run, helps you perform at your peak and reduces the risk of injury. You can warm up by jogging the 1.5km from the baggage bays to the start area and stretch when you get there. Wear warm clothing for as long as possible.

After the race Your race isn’t over just because you’ve crossed the finish line. Warming down is just as important as warming up. Don’t stop when you’ve crossed the line. Keep moving around, jog a little, then walk so your body can adjust. The most dangerous period for any runner is the 20 minutes at the end of the event. Being dehydrated can lead to fatigue, headaches, muscle cramps and reduced coordination. So pay attention to your pre-, during and post-run hydration. One pound of weight loss through sweat is equal to one pint of water, so replenish this amount after your run. Don’t eat a big meal for at least an hour. It’s better to eat a little and often for the six hours after the race.

Guidelines for runners Preparations...

Nutrition

As always, a sensible approach needs to be taken to all distance running especially with regard to training, which will be different for each person. The first thing to do if you are not a club or experienced runner is to have a medical with your GP to ascertain if it is sensible for you to take part in the event and if given the all clear, to then start building up your exercise regime at least six months prior to the event.

Nutrition plays a part in fitness and carbohydrate ‘loading’ can enhance running performance by allowing the competitor to run at optimal pace for a longer period before fatiguing. For the well-trained runner, this may be achieved by tapering exercise over the final days before the race and ensuring carbohydrate intakes of 10-12 g/kg/day over the 36-48 hours prior to the race. Sports nutrition guidelines recommend the runner consumes sufficient amounts of carbohydrates to promote restoration of muscle glycogen between training sessions.

Medical Conditions If you have a medical condition and your Doctor still says that you can compete in a long distance run then it is sensible to inform the race organiser of your pre-existing condition so that in the event of you becoming ill during the race, the medical team can be made aware of your pre-existing condition. If you have a ‘medic alert’ bracelet, then make sure you wear it for the race.

AFTER THE RACE: After you cross the finish line you’ll be handed a bottle of water and a bottle of Gatorade. Once you’ve received these keep moving forward so others can cross the finish line behind you. You can collect your belongings and finisher’s medal at your baggage bays. Do not arrange to meet family and friends at the baggage bays - for suggestions of places to meet up post race see page 27.

4 PUDDLE DOCK / VICTORIA EMBANKMENT / WHITE LION HILL, LONDON EC4 This is a great viewing location as runners will pass this intersection THREE TIMES providing you with a plenty of opportunity to spot and cheer your runners on. This is also the mid way point of the course with runners needing all the encouragement you can give! Here there will also be a PA system providing inspirational music.

5 VICTORIA EMBANKMENT - BETWEEN GOLDEN JUBILEE BRIDGE / BIG BEN Best side for viewing is River Thames side as runners make their way towards Big Ben and the London Eye after completing the City of London part of the course. Nearest London underground stations: Embankment & Westminster. The RAF Benevolent Fund with a large team of over 120 runners taking part will have a cheer point beneath the RAF Memorial opposite the London Eye spreading along to the Battle of Britain Memorial. Why not join them?

6 WESTMINSTER BRIDGE Using both sides of the bridge you will see runners twice here with an iconic London ‘Exhibition’ Route Master Bus with live band providing the focal point between the unique London Eye & Big Ben – the worlds most famous clock. Nearest London underground station: Westminster (Jubilee Line). TOMMYS THE OFFICIAL RACE CHARITY will have a cheer point here with St. Thomas’s Hospital as backdrop. Why not join them with the City of Southampton Albion Band performing live on Westminster Bridge!

7 PARLIAMENT SQUARE With the historic Westminster Abbey as backdrop why not join the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund cheer team on the south side of the square to cheer your friends on. Nearest London underground station: Westminster (Jubilee Line). If you prefer to use the north side of the square between Great George Street & Parliament Street you can walk a short distance up Whitehall towards the finish line. A giant TV screen will be positioned at the junction of Parliament Street with Parliament Square facing towards Trafalgar Square.

8 VICTORIA STREET Here you will be able to cheer runners on twice as they pass down the south side of Victoria Street & return on the north side. Some of these locations have deliberately been highlighted away from major landmark locations to provide the best opportunity of those supporting you to get close to the race route in order to see you and cheer you on! There is not much joy in being around Trafalgar Square or behind the finish line five rows back from the race route unable to spot or cheer your friends running the race.

Embankment Underground Exit onto Northumberland Avenue and walk across Northumberland Avenue to the junction of Whitehall Court and Whitehall Place. WC’s are located in Whitehall Gardens - only race entrants are permitted to use them.

Charing Cross Mainline Station Is the nearest mainline station - a 5 mins walk to Whitehall Place; Turn left to Trafalgar Square, then left into Whitehall - the baggage bays are on the left in Whitehall Place.

AT THE START As the pre-race holding area is on the south side of Piccadilly, with the north side as the race route, there are no pre-race predicted finish time pens. This type of pre-start assembly is only possible for road races that start in open park spaces. The pre-race holding area is operated on a first come first served basis - it can only be accessed as directed from the baggage bays. From 9.00am until the race start at 9.35am there will be recorded and live entertainment.

THE CENOTAPH IN WHITEHALL, LONDON HAS PLAYED HOST TO NATIONAL WAR COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE PAST 100 YEARS. The Cenotaph was originally intended as a small part of the Peace Day events of July 1919. The Cenotaph was designed and built by Edwin Lutyens at the request of the then Prime Minister Lloyd George.
