RACE DAY DON’TS 7 Don’t go directly to the start at Hyde Park Corner. There are no baggage drop off facilities

Guidelines for runners

there and the entire start area will be cordoned off with 8ft tall fencing. Both Hyde Park Corner and Green Park underground stations will be closed on race morning.

7 Under no circumstances should you use Green Park, St. James’s Park and The Mall as a public WC! Stewards with cameras will be in attendance!

7 No public vehicles or bicyles are allowed into the baggage bays or on the race route. 7 Please use public transport to get to/from the race. Visit our website for a list of central London road closures.

7 No bikes are allowed in the baggage bays or on the race route. Please make your friends and family aware of this too.

7 Don’t bring excessive amounts of cash or valuables to the race. We cannot be held responsible for lost or missing items however caused.

PREPARATIONS As always, a sensible approach needs to be taken to all distance running especially with regard to training, which will be different for each person. The first thing to do if you are not a club or experienced runner is to have a medical with your GP to ascertain if it is sensible for you to take part in the event and if given the all clear, to then start building up your exercise regime at least six months prior to the event.

Medical Conditions If you have a medical condition and your doctor still says that you can compete in a long distance run then it is sensible to inform the race organiser of your pre-existing condition so that in the event of you becoming ill during the race, the medical team can be made aware of your pre-existing condition. If you have a ‘medic alert’ bracelet, then make sure you wear it for the race.

Nutrition Nutrition plays a part in fitness and carbohydrate ‘loading’ can enhance running performance by allowing the competitor to run at optimal pace for a longer period before fatiguing. For the well-trained runner, this may be achieved by tapering exercise over the final days before the race and ensuring carbohydrate intakes of 10-12 g/kg/day over the 36-48 hours prior to the race. Sports nutrition guidelines recommend the runner consumes sufficient amounts of carbohydrates to promote restoration of muscle glycogen between training sessions.

7 No headphones allowed - due to emergency blue light service purposes.

RACE DAY DO’S RED NUMBERS 3 Arrive via Piccadilly Circus underground station. At street level follow stewards and Westminster City Guides’ directions to the baggage bays.

BLUE NUMBERS 3 Arrive via Charing Cross stations. At street level follow stewards’ and Westminster City Guides’ directions to the baggage bays.

BAGGAGE BAY OPENING/CLOSING TIMES ETC 3 Baggage bays open at 8.00am, closing at 9.00am. Opening again at 10.05am closing at 1.15pm.

3 Once you’ve dropped off your kit bag in the correct numbered bay follow stewards’ instructions and signs to the start. See centre spread map.

3 Use a padlock to lock your kit bag.

GET TO THE START ON TIME 3 The start is approx 1.5km from the baggage bays so allow 25 minutes to arrive at the start in time. We recommend using this distance to warm up and to arrive at the start nice and relaxed.

3 Once you have started your run if you are a slower runner keep to the right side of the road to allow faster runners to pass on your left hand side.

WARM UP AND COOL DOWN On race morning the adrenaline’s pumping. You’ve trained for this for months using runcoach, our online training partner. There’s just one last bit of preparation left: your warm up. A proper warm up prepares your body for the run, helps you perform at your peak and reduces the risk of injury. You can warm up by jogging the 1.5km from the baggage bays to the start area and stretch when you get there. Your race isn’t over just because you’ve crossed the finish line. Warming down is just as important as warming up. Don’t stop when you’ve crossed the line. Keep moving around, jog a little, then walk so your body can adjust.

THE VITALITY BRITISH 10k LONDON 2015

THE MOST DANGEROUS PERIOD FOR ANY RUNNER IS THE 20 MINUTES AT THE END OF THE EVENT. Being dehydrated can lead to fatigue, headaches, muscle cramps and reduced coordination. So pay attention to your prerace and post run hydration. One pound of weight loss through sweat is equal to one pint of water, so replenish this amount after your run. Don’t eat a big meal for at least an hour. It’s better to eat a little and often for the six hours after the race.

PAGE 13

Join us to change lives Take part in the British 10k London Run and raise funds to promote palliative care for everyone in need To apply call 020 8300 9808 or email info@apca.org.uk APCA works to bring relief from unnecessary pain and suffering to people with illnesses like cancer or AIDS across Africa. We support hospices, health workers, governments and teaching facilities to promote comprehensive palliative care, from pain relief to counselling. Find out more about APCA’s life-changing work at www.africanpalliativecare.org

“I see the difference palliative care makes in people’s lives – when someone has been suffering, then you see them smile.” “It’s hard when you’re learning – you feel real stress till you master the art of pain control,” says Mwazi Batuli, a palliative care nurse trainer at Hospice Africa Uganda. “But we work with social workers, doctors and volunteers with lots of experience, so we share the burden. I’m currently training tutors from nursing schools. More people in health care need to be exposed to palliative care. We’re striving for its integration into training for all health professionals, so everyone qualifies with palliative care knowledge.”

Making a difference to cancer care

THE CHARTWELL CANCER TRUST The Chartwell Cancer Trust is a local charity supporting the Cancer & Leukaemia Units in The Princess Royal University and King’s College Hospitals. Our aim is to help in a positive and personal way providing a channel of support for patients who have been diagnosed with cancer.

Ways you can help:

We currently supply funding for additional staff in the Units and these posts help to improve the continuity of care for patients with significantly reduced waiting times in clinics. We assist in other ways too, whether it is funding for a doctor, nurse, research fellow or equipment to improve the whole patient experience. We want to help wherever we can and rely on our supporters to do just that.

Whatever it is The Chartwell Cancer Trust, the patients and staff are truly grateful.
