As Official Charity Partner of the British 10K London run, we are working harder than ever to use the power of sport to positively transform the lives of children & adults with intellectual / learning disabilities in the Olympic year & beyond. Special Olympics Great Britain is part of the Olympic family, but we are different in that we provide year-round sports training and competition opportunities for children and adults with intellectual / learning disabilities, rather than a single event for elite professional athletes.

2012: AN ICONIC SUMMER IN LONDON This summer in London will go down in history. The British 10k route showcases some of the capital’s most spectacular sights and monuments. Running parallel to the Thames, along Embankment, runners will have an incredible view downstream as they cross Westminster Bridge. Other landmarks on show include Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament: a stunning backdrop for 25,000 runners and their 40,000 spectators. The full race route, a guide to the landmarks and suggestions for the best vantage points are available in the centre spread.

Take a sensible approach to your run - tips for enjoying your 10k and staying well from The British Red Cross
Guidelines for runners Preparations...
Nutrition
As always, a sensible approach needs to be taken to all distance running especially with regard to training, which will be different for each person. The first thing to do if you are not a club or experienced runner is to have a medical with your GP to ascertain if it is sensible for you to take part in the event and if given the all clear, to then start building up your exercise regime at least six months prior to the event.
Nutrition plays a part in fitness and carbohydrate ‘loading’ can enhance running performance by allowing the competitor to run at optimal pace for a longer period before fatiguing. For the well-trained runner, this may be achieved by tapering exercise over the final days before the race and ensuring carbohydrate intakes of 10-12 g/kg/day over the 36-48 hours prior to the race. Sports nutrition guidelines recommend the runner consumes sufficient amounts of carbohydrates to promote restoration of muscle glycogen between training sessions.
Medical Conditions If you have a medical condition and your Doctor still says that you can compete in a long distance run then it is sensible to inform the race organiser of your pre-existing condition so that in the event of you becoming ill during the race, the medical team can be made aware of your pre-existing condition. If you have a ‘medic alert’ bracelet, then make sure you wear it for the race.

ON-COURSE WATER STATIONS On course water stations are located at 3km, 5km, 7.5km with 330cl bottles and at the finish line with 500cl bottles. See pull-out map, centre spread showing water stations icon.
PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE TO YOUR FELLOW RUNNERS: TAKE ONLY THE WATER YOU NEED- THERE COULD BE 24,999 PEOPLE BEHIND YOU! WARM UP AND COOL DOWN
Big Ben from Westminster Bridge
Before the race It’s race day. The adrenaline’s pumping. You’ve trained for this for months. There’s just one last bit of preparation left: your warm up. A proper warm up prepares your body for the run, helps you perform at your peak and reduces the risk of injury. You can warm up by jogging the 1.5k from the baggage bays to the start area and stretch when you get there. Wear warm clothing for as long as possible.
After the race Your race isn’t over just because you’ve crossed the finish line. Warming down is just as important as warming up. Don’t stop when you’ve crossed the line. Keep moving around, jog a little, then walk so your body can adjust. The most dangerous period for any runner is the 20 minutes at the end of the event.
CLAIM YOUR FREE OFFICIAL RACE PHOTO WORTH £17.99! Official British 10K photographers, Marathon-Photos.com, will be there to photograph you on race day. To ensure they have a clearly identifiable image of you must wear your official event t-shirt printed with your race number. You will be able to download your photograph within 24 hours. Visit the race website at www.thebritish10klondon.co.uk. Please note: it is your responsibility to make sure you wear your race number. Do not obscure your number in any way. Only if we have a clearly identifiable shot of you with your race number can we give you your free download photo.
Being dehydrated can lead to fatigue, headaches, muscle cramps and reduced coordination. So pay attention to your pre-, during and post-run hydration. One pound of weight loss through sweat is equal to one pint of water, so replenish this amount after your run. Don’t eat a big meal for at least an hour. It’s better to eat a little and often for the six hours after the race.

ON RACE DAY
RACE DAY DO’S ✔ If the weather’s hot leading up to and on race day, make sure you’re fully hydrated before leaving for the race. ✔ Arrive at the baggage bays between 8:00am and 8.50am. The start is 1.5km from the baggage bays so allow 15 minutes to arrive at the start in time. We recommend using this walk to warm up.
✔ Keep to the left hand side of the road on Pall Mall, St. James’ Street and Piccadilly. The right hand side of each road is the race route. ✔ If you’re a slower runner, keep to the right side of the race route to allow faster
✔ Once you’ve dropped off your kit bag in

the correct colour coded bay, make your way towards the tall Duke of York column and follow the signs to the start.
your left hand side.
✔ Walk on the road to keep the pavement clear for spectators and members of the public.
✔ Only take one free bottle of water so there’s enough to go around.
AFTER THE RACE: As soon as you cross the line, you’ll be handed your finisher’s medal by race stewards and a free bottle of water or Gatorade. Once you’ve collected these, move forward so others can cross behind you. You can collect your belongings and finisher’s goody bag by bearing right to the baggage bays at Whitehall Place. To exit the baggage bays, continue ahead towards the toilets and Northumberland Avenue. From here, there is no return to the start area on Whitehall.
