July 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of WW1. The theme of this year’s British 10k London Run is ‘Linking the Past to the Present’. Representing the past will be a spectacular parade at the start on Piccadilly involving mounted cavalry officers and Tommys in period WW1 uniforms. The present will be represented by 100 servicemen in current uniform with Help for Heroes as official charity. There will also be a performance by a military wives choir and WW1 poetry readings. ICoNIC RoUTE Starting on Piccadilly outside the Cavalry & Guards Club, the route passes a great many of the old city’s world class historic landmarks before finishing on Whitehall at the Cenotaph. The Cenotaph was built to commemorate WW1 and unveiled in November 1920 by King George V.

NEW BALANCE - SUPPoRTING BRITISH MANUFACTURING Uniquely our sports wear partner New Balance remains committed to manufacturing in Britain. They currently employ over 210 people at their site in Flimby, Cumbria and produce over 28,000 pairs of shoes a week with 90% of all footwear sold going to European markets. As part of your race entry you will find on page 8 your discount voucher entitling you to 20% off New Balance footwear and apparel. Make use of this runner benefit and help support our sponsor and British Manufacturing. Also don’t forget to activate your online personal runcoach training programme and make use of the downloadable British 10k app entitling you to a whole range of fantastic benefits across London on race weekend. A FAIR DEAL FoR CHARITIES The British 10k London Run is unique in that it is the only mass participation charity based road race that either starts, finishes or passes through central London which does not penalise charities by charging them more than members of the public for guaranteed places. This has the very real benefit of charities retaining more of the funds, you, the participant, raise for the worthy cause. This enables these charities to spend more on the people and causes they were set up for in the first instance, rather than inflating income to limited event management companies – even if they operate with the guise of having charitable trusts. LookING FoRWARD To 2015 Looking forward to next year’s run we are delighted to announce that Cancer Research UK will be the official charity. 2015 online entries for individual own place runner (red numbers) will open on the afternoon of the 13th of July this year, with entries accepted on a first come first served basis.

LETTER OF SUPPORT FOR THE BRITISH 10K LONDON RUN FROM THE RIGHT HONOURABLE DAVID CAMERON MP - PRIME MINISTER
THE BRITISH 10K LONDON 2014
PAGE 2
Official Charity Partner The British 10K London Run A massive thank you and good luck… …to all those who have chosen to do their bit for Help for Heroes (H4H) in the British 10K London Run 2014 and any other amazing challenges you have taken on. Your dedication will help deliver lifelong support for those who have suffered life changing injuries or illnesses, and their families. We want our young Servicemen and women to rebuild their lives, to enjoy fulfilling futures; beyond injury. We need you to make that happen. In the past 12 months thousands of you have run in events up and down the country putting your best foot forward for our heroes and we still have so much more to do. With a variety of challenges available at H4H, what will you do next?
Private Jamie Hull, Band of Brothers Member In August 2007, Private Jamie Hull was involved in an incident while piloting a light aircraft in Florida. Jamie suffered horrendous injuries, including 60% third-degree burns and partially paralysed feet. Following six months in intensive care in the USA, Jamie had to effectively rebuild his life; including learning to walk again. Since 2007 Jamie has faced and overcome enormous adversity. His injuries haven’t stopped him from striving to succeed with many great challenges in life. He completed the 2011 London Marathon and then the New York marathon the following November. He has also
climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, successfully reaching 5,895 metres on 1st June. Help for Heroes is honoured to have such an inspirational ambassador who has strength of character and determination to achieve whatever he sets his sights on: “Help for Heroes has been such an important part of my recovery. The money they receive from their supporters really does go directly to people like me. As part of my rehabilitation the Charity’s Quick Reaction Fund was able to award me a grant with which to purchase a bike to help maintain my fitness levels. Without this I would not be achieving
what I am today. Each challenge I set myself is a personal goal, proving to myself that I’ve regained my fitness. Running a marathon for the second time demonstrates my commitment to achieving what once seemed impossible, and enables me to ‘do my bit’ by raising money for other wounded servicemen and women.”

RELIEVE MUSCULAR ACHES AND PAINS WITH TIGER BALM RED Tiger Balm owes its origins to a soothing herbal balm that was prepared to effectively relieve the aches and pains of Chinese Emperors. It was first developed in the 1870s by Aw Chu Kin, a Chinese herbalist who worked in the Emperors Court and went onto set up a small medicine shop where he prepared and sold this special remedy. When he died, Aw Chu Kin passed his eastern wisdom onto his two sons Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par who sold the soothing balm to surrounding countries and named it Tiger Balm - an anglicised version of Haw’s name, the tiger, and synonymous in the East with strength and vitality. Tiger Balm Red is now a modern day topical analgesic proven effective for the temporary and targeted relief of muscular aches and pains.
The unique herbal formulation of Tiger Balm uses the healing properties of natural active ingredients, Camphor, Menthol, Cajuput Oil and Clove Oil and is available in two varieties. Tiger Balm White, with the comforting aroma of Mint Oil, which is recommended for the treatment of tension headaches and Tiger Balm Red, which contains Cinnamon Oil, to provide temporary and targeted relief of muscular aches and pains.
The distinctive springing tiger logo was created by Boon Haw (whose name means gentle tiger) and remains the trademark of the brand. Tiger Balm comes in a decorative handy sized jar and its unique formulation has been tried and trusted for over 100 years and is now sold in over 100 countries worldwide. Tiger Balm Red’s inherent strength is always on hand to ease away the effects of a hard day’s work.
With 18% of us suffering from aches and pains every day, the relieving properties of Tiger Balm’s natural active ingredients coupled with the calming aroma of Cinnamon Oil means you no longer need to suffer in silence when it comes to muscular aches and pains. A little of the non greasy formula should be gently rubbed into the affected area two or three times a day for best results, or as often as required.
Tiger Balm Red is priced £4.90 for a 19g jar and is available from Boots, Tesco, ASDA, Morrisons, Superdrug, independent pharmacies and health food stores nationwide. For further information call 0844 243 6661 or visit www.tigerbalm.co.uk. Always read the label.

BE PREPARED ON RACE DAY ARRIVE HYDRATED ON RACE DAY WITH A SPRING IN YOUR STEP oN-CoURSE WATER STATIoNS On course water stations are located at approx 3km, 5km, 7km and 8km with 330cl bottles of water. At the finish line there will be 25,000 500cl bottles of water: One for each person.
SEE CENTRE SPREAD MAP FOR WATER STATION LOCATIONS WARM UP AND COOL DOWN On race morning the adrenaline’s pumping. You’ve trained for this for months using runcoach our online training partner. There’s just one last bit of preparation left: your warm up. A proper warm up prepares your body for the run, helps you perform at your peak and reduces the risk of injury. You can warm up by jogging the 1.5km from the baggage bays to the start area and stretch when you get there. Your race isn’t over just because you’ve crossed the finish line. Warming down is just as important as warming up. Don’t stop when you’ve crossed the line. Keep moving around, jog a little, then walk so your body can adjust.
THE MOST DANGEROUS PERIOD FOR ANY RUNNER IS THE 20 MINUTES AT THE END OF THE EVENT. Being dehydrated can lead to fatigue, headaches, muscle cramps and reduced coordination. So pay attention to your pre-race and post run hydration. One pound of weight loss through sweat is equal to one pint of water, so replenish this amount after your run. Don’t eat a big meal for at least an hour. It’s better to eat a little and often for the six hours after the race. If the weather is hot make sure your running kit is light coloured, light weight and any fancy dress is kept to a minimum and is runner friendly for hot weather.
PAGE 11
PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE TO YOUR FELLOW RUNNERS: TAKE ONLY ONE WATER BOTTLE AT EACH STATION AND USE ECONOMICALLY - THERE COULD BE 24,999 PEOPLE BEHIND YOU!
GUIDELINES FOR RUNNERS TAKE A SENSIBLE APPROACH TO YOUR RUN - TIPS FOR ENJOYING YOUR 10K AND STAYING WELL FROM THE BRITISH RED CROSS PREPARATIONS As always, a sensible approach needs to be taken to all distance running especially with regard to training, which will be different for each person. The first thing to do if you are not a club or experienced runner is to have a medical with your GP to ascertain if it is sensible for you to take part in the event and if given the all clear, to then start building up your exercise regime at least six months prior to the event.
MEDICAL CONDITIONS If you have a medical condition and your doctor still says that you can compete in a long distance run then it is sensible to inform the race organiser of your pre-existing condition so that in the event of you becoming ill during the race, the medical team can be made aware of your pre-existing condition. If you have a ‘medic alert’ bracelet, then make sure you wear it for the race.
NUTRITION Nutrition plays a part in fitness and carbohydrate ‘loading’ can enhance running performance by allowing the competitor to run at optimal pace for a longer period before fatiguing. For the well-trained runner, this may be achieved by tapering exercise over the final days before the race and ensuring carbohydrate intakes of 10-12 g/kg/day over the 36-48 hours prior to the race. Sports nutrition guidelines recommend the runner consumes sufficient amounts of carbohydrates to promote restoration of muscle glycogen between training sessions.

8 VICTORIA STREET Here you will be able to cheer runners on twice as they pass down the south side of Victoria Street & return on the north side. There will be a PA system here playing inspirational music. There is also a classic Victorian pub here called the Prince Albert! Well worth a visit! Some of these locations have deliberately been highlighted away from major landmark locations to provide the best opportunity of those supporting you to get close to the race route in order to see you and cheer you on! There is not much joy in being around Trafalgar Square or behind the finish line five rows back from the race route unable to spot or cheer your friends running the race.

LINKING THE PAST TO THE PRESENT - ALL BRITISH 10K RUNNERS WILL PASS THE ICONIC CENOTAPH ON WHITEHALL The Cenotaph was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and was originally a wood-andplaster structure. It was one of a number of temporary structures erected for the London Victory Parade. For some time after the parade, the base of the memorial was covered with flowers and wreaths by members of the public. Pressure then mounted to retain it, and an announcement was made on 23 October 1919 that a permanent Portland stone version would replace it and would be a replica exact in every detail. The Cenotaph is undecorated apart from a carved wreath on each end and a smaller carved wreath on top. The words “The Glorious Dead” are inscribed below the wreaths on each end. Above the wreaths are inscribed the dates of the First World War in Roman numerals (1914 - MCMXIV; and 1919 - MCMXIX). The Cenotaph was unveiled by King George V in November 1920 by way of two giant Union Flags draped each side. The picture on the right shows the unveiling
of the Cenotaph. On the north side of the Cenotaph is the body of the unknown warrior which was taken from Flanders en route to be buried at the west nave entrance of Westminster Abbey. The Cenotaph was designed to commemorate the British Empire military dead of the First World War, but this was later extended to include those that died in the Second World War. The dates of the Second World War were added in Roman numerals on the sides of the memorial (1939—MCMXXXIX; and 1945—MCMXLV) The memorial was unveiled for a second time on Sunday 10 November 1946 by King George VI. It is now also used to remember the dead of later wars in which British servicemen and servicewomen have fought. The Cenotaph was designated a Grade I listed building on 5 February 1970. The British 10k London Run course passes Westminster Abbey before finishing on Whitehall at Royal Horse Guards Arch with all runners poignantly passing the Cenotaph.

2014: A TIME TO REMEMBER AND HONOUR THE SACRIFICE OF THE GENERATION OF 1914-18 The Western Front Association was founded to remember the First World War of 1914-18. This was a conflict that was not just about soldiers, sailors and airmen: it touched every man, woman and child in the United Kingdom. The scale of the casualties were greater than in any war Britain had fought before, and actually greater than those of the Second World War. The British Empire suffered 3,261,000 casualties, of which 947,000 were killed – nearly one million. On the Western Front in France and Belgium, the losses of the British forces totalled 2,700,000, including 678,000 fatalities. Everyone in Britain would have had a friend or family member who was killed or wounded, or known someone in that position. Yet the people of 1914-18 mostly believed it was worth it: the threat to the security of Britain, and their way of life was seen as so great that German aggression had to be resisted. Britain mobilised its entire population to fight a ‘total war’, and in a democracy this
PAGE 33
can only work if the people consent. At the end of the war, the vast majority of the people of Britain were still firmly behind the war effort. The Germans had appeared to be winning as late as the summer of 1918, and the victory in November 1918 came as a merciful deliverance. The scars on individuals in Britain was traumatic: women were widowed, parents bereaved, children orphaned. Many children only knew of their fathers from photographs and from visits to the local war memorial to look at his name carved in stone. We are still feeling the effects of that war 100 years later. In the year of the Centenary of the First World War, it is important for us to remember and honour the sacrifice of the generation of 1914-18: the men who did not come back, or were wounded in body or mind; the families that were bereaved. But we should not look upon them simply as victims. They were victors, and it is appropriate to celebrate, in a nontriumphalist way, the achievement of the
British people in overcoming aggression. The links between the way we remember the First World War and the way we think about casualties of modern wars are many and obvious. While the last of the veterans of the 1914-18 War has gone, those of Afghanistan, Iraq and other campaigns are still very much with us. True remembrance is not merely thinking about those who gave their lives or health, but an active commitment to help those in need.
