Welcome to the 2011 British 10k London Run Dear Runner, 2011 marks the 11th staging of the UK's most prestigious 10km road race through the heart of central London, passing many of the capital's truly world-class landmarks on the world’s greatest road race route. So much so that in 2012 much of the course will be used to stage the men's and women's Olympic marathons. The combined success, scale and route of The British 10k London Run remains the envy of not only other road race organisers in London but from around the world. CHANGES FOR 2011 Due to this success, this year the baggage bays are being split into two separate locations. Those with red, green and black numbers will continue to use Waterloo Place as the pre race bag drop off point whilst Silver, Blue and Purple numbers MUST GO to Whitehall Place located at the north end of Whitehall (Trafalgar Square end). See maps on centre spread for details.

2012 - A SPECIAL HISTORIC YEAR Next year, London will host not only the Olympic Games but also the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Both are historic events of global importance, as none of us will ever witness a Diamond Jubilee or a London Olympic Games again in our lifetime. DON’T MISS OUT IN 2012 The 12th anniversary British 10km London Run takes place on Sunday 15th July - 12 days before the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games. Individual runners can enter online immediately after London Eye, Big Ben and Westminster Abbey

this year’s race to secure their place for 2012 to avoid any ballot. Runners taking part this year for a charity holding debentures should register their intent to run in 2012 with the charity of their choice now before all their places are taken up. Please act on this advice as demand for places in 2012 will exceed availability. See page 3 for details WATER STATIONS Finally two important points to note. Firstly, there will be no water at the baggage bays this year but a greater amount distributed around the race route, including over 20,000 500cl bottles at the finish line. Please ensure that you arrive at the race fully hydrated. Secondly, please make sure that you arrive and deposit your kit bags by 9:00am at the latest as both baggage bays are between 15 and 20 minutes walk from the start. Yours sincerely,

Michael O' Reilly Event Founder & Director

Due to the limited amount of space available for the positioning of free standing portaloos it is only possible to provide up to 100 individual units so please be sensible and go to the toilet before you leave home or use public toilets at London Underground or Mainline stations.

Guidelines for runners

Warm up and down..

Preparations... As always, a sensible approach needs to be taken to all distance running especially with regard to training, which will be different for each person. The first thing to do if you are not a club or experienced runner is to have a medical with your GP to ascertain if it is sensible for you to take part in the event and if given the all clear, to then start building up your exercise regime at least six months prior to the event.

Don’t forget to warm up!

Medical Conditions If you have a medical condition and your Doctor still says that you can compete in a long distance run then it is sensible to inform the race organiser of your pre-existing condition so that in the event of you becoming ill during the race, the medical team can be made aware of your pre-existing condition. If you have a ‘medic alert’ bracelet, then make sure you wear it for the race.

After the race Just as important as warming up is warming down at the end of your run. The most dangerous period for any runner is the twenty minute period at the end of the event, and it is essential that you do not just stop at the end, but keep moving around, a little jogging, then walk for enough time for your body to adjust to the completion of the event. You must keep up your fluid levels before, during and at the end of the event, and eat a power bar or similar when you can at the end. Allow an hour or so before having a large meal, it is better to eat a little and often for the first six hours following the event.

Nutrition Nutrition plays a part in fitness and carbohydrate ‘loading’ can enhance running performance by allowing the competitor to run at optimal pace for a longer period before fatiguing. For the well-trained runner, this may be achieved by tapering exercise over the final days before the race and ensuring carbohydrate intakes of 10-12 g/kg/day over the 36-48 hours prior to the race. Sports nutrition guidelines recommend the runner consumes sufficient amounts of carbohydrates to promote restoration of muscle glycogen between training sessions.

On race day, warming up is essential prior to the event so try and keep warm outer clothing on until the last minute.

LOST YOUR RACE NUMBER? If you have lost or misplaced your race number you can obtain a replacement at the help desk at the baggage bays. You must bring proof of I.D. and proof of entry. Under no circumstances whatsoever are you to give your race number to anyone else to run in, as in case of emergency your original race registration details are held on a database with the emergency services covering the event.

Chip Timing - Important Information Fitting your D-Tag STEP 1 Remove the tag from your race number. Make sure the adhesive strip stays on the race number Again this year’s British 10k London Run will use the leading ChronoTrack timing system provided by TDL Event Services. Each runner who has opted for chip timing will be issued with a ChronoTrack D-Tag. The D-Tag will come attached to the front of your running number. Attach the D-Tag to your shoe as shown in the instructions ensuring the Tag is in a nice circle. Mats at the start and finish lines of the race will ‘read’ your tag and record your individual race time. You must remove the D-Tag from your race number and attach it to your shoe prior to the race, following the instructions. Runners with chip timing must wear the D-Tag correctly in order to have their finish time recorded. The D-Tag is single use and can be disposed of after the race.

STEP 2 Separate the D-Tag from directions by tearing at ‘tear along here’, i.e. down the centre of the D-Tag

STEP 3 Form a CIRCLE around the laces where they cross

STEP 4 Line up the holes in the D-Tag and join the ends together with the adhesive tab

STEP 5 Rotate the D-Tag to correct side up, so that your race number is showing

No D-Tag, No Time! Leonard Patrick Komon of Kenya smashed the World record in the 10Km at the ABN AMRO Singelloop in Utrecht in the Netherlands, September 2010.

Further information and videos are available on the race website at www.thebritish10klondon.co.uk

Meeting up pre and post race Pre or post race, when you are planning to meet up with family or friends make sure you avoid the huge crowds at the baggage bays in Whitehall Place and Waterloo Place and the finish area on Whitehall.

Pre and post race rendezvous for charities

Meeting family and friends post race

It is recommended that participating charities meeting team members coming from around the UK should rendezvous in the first instance away from the baggage bays at 8:00am.

The finish area along Whitehall and at the baggage bays in Waterloo Place and Whitehall Place will be heavily congested. As a result it may be difficult to locate family and friends within these areas. It is recommended that you plan to meet up away from these sites. Locations you may wish to consider are:

Suggested sites include outside local underground stations such as Piccadilly Circus, Westminster, Leicester Square, Charing Cross, Embankment or at Charing Cross mainline station or in front of The National Gallery on the North side of Trafalgar Square. All are within a 3 - 12 minute walk of the pre-race baggage bays. See map centre spread for details.

About STUBS STUBS (as in “ticket stubs”) is a registered charity that provides practical support for UK armed services personnel injured on duty, war widows and their dependents, and other service veterans.

This is a worthwhile venture that deserves your wholehearted support

Sir Ian McGeechan, OBE, A key aspect of STUBS work is support for the UK’s most seriously injured STUBS Patron servicemen and servicewomen, who are in-patients at the Defence Medical Head Coach, British Lions 2009 Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) at Headley Court, Epsom. Severely-injured in-patients from Headley Court are frequent visitors to STUBS events including Harlequins home games, where STUBS rents an executive box on the halfway line offering patients a great view of the action. Patients also attend a wide range of other sporting events and for many their initial outing to a STUBS event is their first time out in public since being injured.
