Doyou think about ‘social licence’ when you get on your horse for a schooling session or to take him or her to a competition? For the majority of us the answer would be no, but it’s an issue which could affect competition riders in all disciplines in the future.

Leading equestrian charity World Horse Welfare recently commissioned YouGov to conduct independent research to explore public opinion on the welfare of horses in sport.

The results were somewhat alarming – 40% only supported the continued involvement of horses in sport if their welfare is improved, while most worryingly of all, 20% did not support the continued involvement of horses in sport in any circumstances.

While it should be pointed out that the vast majority of respondents had little regular contact with horses, it is unrealistic to dismiss their views or think they will have no impact on our sport.

The industry is looking to ensure that sport is taking the right actions for the right reasons when it comes to horse welfare and safety – for example the Royal Veterinary College’s Dr Madeleine Campbell is working with sporting bodies on the development of an ethical framework for the use of horses in sport.

A lack of understanding of ‘horsey people’ and how much their animals are part of their lives is another issue. Disciplines are also looking to educate the wider public on how sport horses are cared for – such as an initiative by the racing industry to open training yards to the public for a specific weekend each year.

But individual riders and owners must also play their part – at a webinar held by WHW to discuss the survey and the way forward for the industry, FEI Judge Christian Landolt spoke of the importance of putting the horse’s welfare fi rst. He explained how the decision to send Keystone Dawn Chorus to Natasha Baker as a Paralympic prospect was the right one for the mare’s welfare rather than to try and take her through the grades – and happily was a decision that resulted in a multiple medal-winning partnership!

And we also have a role to play in public perception – dressage’s profi le has grown immeasurably, and many of your friends and neighbours may know that you have ‘dancing horses’, even if they don’t know one end from the other. It is more important than ever that we show – in words and deeds – how special these horses are to us and how much we value their welfare.

FEI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The FEI Dressage World Championships and FEI Para Dressage World Championships take place at Herning, Denmark from 6-14 August, part of a multi-discipline event which also features jumping and vaulting and is the

Tickets for the LeMieux National Dressage Championships are now on sale and a dedicated website with all the information about tickets, the timetable and visitor facilities has been launched at britishdressage.co.uk/ national-dressage-championships

Taking place from 15-18 September at Somerford Park, the championships features action in three arenas over all four days, featuring over 700 combinations, so there’ll be plenty of dressage competition to choose from. Current and future top dressage riders will be competing for the coveted title of National Champion, the popular KBIS Young Horse classes will showcase up and coming talent and Prelim Silver showcases the best of the country’s grassroots sport alongside many more levels and classes.

LINDA WHETSTONE

A memorial service for our Chair, Linda Whetstone, who sadly passed away at the end of last year, has been arranged by her family on Tuesday 18 October at 12 noon, hosted at St Marylebone Parish Church, 17 Marylebone Road, London, NW1 5LT.

Following the service, those in attendance are welcome to join the family for a reception at the Royal Institute of British Architects, 66 Portland Place, London, W1B 1AD.

Whilst numbers are unlimited and the invite is extended to all of Linda’s friends

The inaugural Linda Whetstone Memorial Trophy will be awarded at the National Championships, for an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to dressage.

IN MEMORIAM JONQUIL SOLT

Pioneer of para dressage Jonquil Solt OBE has passed away at the age of 88.

:

A former Chair of the International Paralympic Equestrian Committee (IPEC) and FEI Para Equestrian Committee, on uil as the first erson in equestrianism to receive a Paralympic Order, given to those who have made fundamental contributions to the Paralympic movement.

Jonquil was Founder Chairman of the RDA’s Dressage Committee and became Founder Vice-Chairman of the International Paralympic Equestrian Committee (IPEC) in 1991, before becoming its Chair in 1995. She played a key role in the development of national and international Para Dressage o etitions in luding the first World Championships in the late 1980s and the inclusion of the sport in the araly i a es or the first ti e in Atlanta 1996, where she was President of the Ground Jury.

In another major development for the sport, Jonquil co-signed the cooperation agreement which saw Para Dressage become an FEI discipline in 2006. In doing so it e a e the first araly i sport to leave the IPC and join an international governing body, alongside and on an equal footing with ablebodied athletes.

UPDATE FROM PARA DIRECTOR TRACY ORMROD

Iwas delighted that the Para Home international could go ahead again this year after a two-year gap due to the pandemic. I have attended many Para Home Internationals in the past as BD Para rep for Wales and it was lovely to see a considerable number of new faces at this event. The increasing numbers wanting to take part in para dressage bodes well for the future of our sport.

I could not have been prouder to present the team title and trophies to Wales, I may be a little biased, but I know how hard the four athletes involved have worked over the last year to achieve good scores and improve themselves.

I was also, as always, so impressed with the supporters and helpers the competitors had with them – it takes a dedicated

This sparkling celebration of para dressage at Bishop Burton from 6-8 May also included the new freestyle to music bronze and silver tests.

Dragon power was certainly in evidence as the Welsh team took the title with ages ranging from 12 to 75, all levels of experience were showcased by the team. Elan Williams (12) has been achieving some brilliant scores in her career to date and now has her sights set on the Para Bronze and Silver Championships. Elan made her Para Home International debut on Trinny her riding partner, a very talented Riding for the Disabled pony. She was over the moon to be in the winning team

and managed third place in the Individual Grade I class where just over two percentage point split the top three riders.

Veronica Bower, an experienced campaigner on Game Over won the Individual Grade I title as well as being part of the winning Welsh team. Veronica, aged 75, is trained by her daughter Tracy Ormrod who is the BD Para Dressage Director, having previously been the BD Welsh Para Rep.

Lorna Lee, Grade II Individual winner was delighted with her title after completing her fi rst ever Para Home International competition. ark Gri n, another fi rst timer, did brilliantly to win the Individual Grade III.

In the Grade IV, Laura Scott and Koko Pop came out on top in the Individual and the Freestyle. “It was my fi rst time competing at a Para Home International and riding as part of the South & West team. The comradeship and atmosphere were fantastic, well worth the long journey to get there! Koko Pop excelled himself all weekend,” Laura commented.

In the Grade V class, Joanne Dagley Cleworth on her new ride Uptomistic represented one of the South & East region teams and

achieved third place, but trumped that with the number one placing in her Grade V Individual class.

The new Freestyle classes were very popular with riders and audience alike. Bronze and Silver Freestyle tests, introduced last year as a bridge to the technically demanding FEI Freestyle tests, will give many more para riders an opportunity to ‘dance’ with their horses.

British Dressage thanks the team at Bishop Burton for putting on a fantastic three days of competition.

PARA COACH TRAINING

We are excited to announce that the new Para Coach Pathway training day has now been launched! The Para Coach training will be one day online or face-to-face training that is aimed at coaches who are interested in becoming a para coach or those who are already involved in coaching para riders but would like to refresh their knowledge. This training has been developed with bespoke content, which considers the feedback from the workforce survey and the needs of equestrian coaches.

NORTHERN lights

Moody is in the indoor arena, coaching, getting inside the mind of a smart five year old being aimed at young horse classes, and his talented rider.

They’ve hit a blip in training and are working with Becky to move through it. othing escapes her eagle eye but she is encouraging and offers strategies and insights. She wants to see the horse be self motivated and the right side of sharp and suggests a leg off techni ue to aid the horse anticipating going forward when the leg goes back on.

“I’ve found it works with Bomb and I use it a lot.” she tells the rider.

Bomb is of course, Jagerbomb, the home bred eight year old who scored the small tour treble at the winter championships, picking up the Inter I, Inter I freestyle and Prix St Georges titles.

n the other side of the school wall there is some banging and colourful language.

“That’s Hannah, we’ve got a plumbing issue she’s trying to sort out.” explains Becky, whose partnership with her sister has made oody Dressage a powerhouse in the orth.

The sisters are based in their parents’ converted pig farm nestled in the Pennines near Barnsley. It’s a yard which has grown organically around some original converted buildings, housing indoor and outdoor arenas, with enough space for a barn for the competition horses and room for visitors who come year round for training. It’s an impressive but not fl ash facility, and the beating heart of the operation is the grit, determination and humour of the sisters and their loyal team.

BeckyThe oody story began in Scotland where both sisters were part of the Eglinton Pony Club before their father Patrick’s work in textiles took them south to Barnsley. Both rode on teams for ockwood Pony Club, and Becky caught the dressage bug when she took over the ride on Hannah’s TB x Highland event horse Sir red and began training with Ian Woodhead. She rode on teams with Jordas and wadraat, whose competition career was started by Hannah, winning two team bron es. Along the way Becky has won numerous national titles.

Hannah headed off to the Slade School of ine Art but came home to concentrate on horses when she completed her degree.

In the beginning it was tough. They slept in the trailer in sub ero temperatures to take part in pony team training at Hickstead. Becky had won the pony talent spotting fi nal and was about to be selected as reserve for the European championships.

But the main memory the Moody sisters have of the occasion was a comment about them being the people who did dressage on a shoestring because they didn’t have a wagon.

It’s something the oody sisters laugh about, as Becky ended up riding for team GB . And they do now have a wagon. Called rank.

husband Robin and daughter Eva. They have 150 clients between them and are influential in supporting BD Youth.

What makes Becky’s career so successful? “I work my **** off,” says Becky. “Sometimes too much, but everything I make goes back into the yard and the horses. Plus, the support from our parents, Hannah and the whole team.

“We’re very lucky in having supportive owners but we share the running costs of the competition horses and, to be honest, it’s an expensive sport.

“But if we want to pursue excellence in our show centres and judges it costs money for everyone involved.”

Becky currently has a trio of eight-year-olds she has high hopes for – Jagerbomb (Dante Weltino x Jazz) home bred from a Grand Prix mare who had a field accident; Jack Diamond (Electron x Diamond Hit) bought by owner Jo Cooper as a three-year-old stallion and gelded at five, and James Bond (Desperado x Fidertanz) still a stallion with youngstock on the ground.

“They are all very different. And the more I work and train horses, the more I think you don’t know what you’ve got until you start training towards the Grand Prix.

“Bomb was a little dull as a four-year-old but didn’t sell so I kept him. His trainability

has enabled me to develop his ‘correct’ movement into something pretty cool. He’s just done his fi rst Inter 11.”

“Jack Diamond was sharp and once deposited me at Carl Hester’s feet in a young horse class, so Hannah worked with him for six months and I picked him up again aged seven. He’s the current winter advanced medium reserve champion and competing at small tour.”

“And James Bond was the elementary champion aged five and we’re now working at PSG.” she says.

Her strength in depth includes two at Grand Prix (Famke and Carinsio) and some exciting younger horses beginning to make their competitive debuts this year.

What does Becky look for when she is choosing a horse for herself or clients?

“Rideability would be my number one. They’ve got to be comfortable to sit on and be able to use the gears. I would do the tiniest bit of sitting trot even on a young horse to get a feel and I want to see how they react when you say stop and go.”

“Conformation, but to a degree. A horse who looks uphill when he is stood up may look downhill when he is moving – and the other way round. You need to see both.

“When my clients send me videos, I tell them that it’s the transitions which will tell you most, but I understand it’s sometimes daunting for them to get on someone else’s horse and ride in front of them.

“THE MORE I WORK AND TRAIN HORSES, THE MORE I THINK YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’VE GOT UNTIL YOU START TRAINING TOWARDS THE GRAND PRIX WITH THEM.”

“And then you need to try and assess temperament and trainability. It can be a lottery,” she jokes.

Becky works closely with breeder Julie Lockey, owner Jo Cooper and agent Rebecca Dudley, all of whom understand what she likes in a future dressage champion.

And, she always insists on riding them as she is not a fan of buying from video.

“Until lockdown,” she adds “I was persuaded to buy Shroom (Magic Dream) having only seen videos but she’s turned out to be an exciting mare.”

At the time of writing five year old Shroom had just won a young horse class with 85.4%.

Back to the coaching, and Becky is encouraging her rider not to get upset when her horse does not respond correctly.

“Be chilled when you deal with the mistakes, and don’t try too hard. You need to get the horse in front of the leg but go about it in the right way.

“Remember you are not just training him for a five year old test, but as a future Grand Prix horse.” she says.

“I was overwhelmed when things went a bit wrong, but now I’m dealing with it with your help, I feel calmer,” admits Becky’s pupil.

Later a Facebook post revealed that Becky had helped her in the warm up for the class and it had come good.

“I’M REALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR HOW OUR HORSES GO.”

“I’m really passionate about us taking responsibility for how our horses go, so if I do a poor test, it’s my fault not my horse’s.

“It’s my pet hate when people blame their horses. We have to quit making excuses and train better.

“I’m in a lucky position in that if a horse needs time I don’t have to go out and compete. They can go at their own pace, and sometimes Hannah takes over with a slightly different approach which can take the pressure off.”

Becky, who trains with David Hunt and Carl Hester, harbours future team ambitions.

“I think I have horses now which could represent team GB , and certainly compete internationally.

“Maybe not in the Olympic format of three to a team as I think those places are taken,” she jokes. “But I can definitely see them carrying the flag.”

Earlierthis year nominations were invited for the member elected Board Director positions of Chairman, International Director and Judges Director. For the roles of International Director and Judges Director, the current post-holders were both eligible to stand for a second term. Judy Harvey and Peter Storr were the only individuals to be nominated for these two technical director portfolios and will go forward to the membership vote unopposed.

Two candidates were proposed for the position of Chairman, with both nominations approved by the Nominations Committee and British Dressage Board. Claire Moir, who is currently BD Youth Director, and former BD Training Director Jill Day, will both be eligible for election as Chair, with the appointment effective from the date of the next British Dressage Annual General Meeting in October.

JILL DAY

Dressage has been my passion for 50 years; I am a founder life member and have contributed to the organisation as a volunteer in many different roles from the very beginnings of BD as a governing body to the present day.

I retired from competing in 2002 after several years at international Grand Prix on my horse of a lifetime, ‘Teddy’ aka ‘Nominee Redwood’. Having competed at the highest level, I recognise the struggle it is to get there and stay there. However, when I fi rst started out it took me four years

to win my fi rst point, so I do understand how hard it can be at every level of the sport. In fact, I am living proof that you can have a rewarding career in dressage without winning anything.

I am now a freelance coach that works with riders of all levels and abilities. I have experience across a wide range of roles within BD, from being on the Board as Training Director to serving on different technical committees. I was involved in the development of the new judge education system and the British

Dressage coaching ualification (BDCC). I have worked with our Under 21 teams and I am currently a Senior Selector, while I also have experience of working with Para riders.

I realise that BD must operate as an e cient business in the interest of its members. The recent pandemic has shown us how important robust fi nancial reserves are. Once we have reached our reserve target, however, it is important that we look at how we can reinvest our funds to support our members in the fi nancially tough times ahead.

We must not forget that this is a members’ organisation, and the best interests of members must come fi rst. All riders should have access to equal opportunities. Members that have been loyal to BD for many years should be as well looked after as those encouraged in at entry level. The one-horse owner that wants to work up the levels but stay within their own peer group are as important to me as

the riders at the other end of the sport.

From the outset, one of BD’s strengths was the regional structure. Covid demanded some major strategic decisions to be made to reduce the cost to the members. The amalgamation of the regions was one of those decisions, but I feel that we have lost that regional identity and the camaraderie that was important to so many members. I want to look at what we can do to get that back.

I am not saying I can please everyone, but I am a good listener, and I am prepared to hear what you have to say and present your views to the Board.

I am committed to the principle that all members, volunteers, and staff should be treated with respect and fairness.

I am aware that I will need to earn that trust and respect from the membership, the directors, and BD staff. I am asking you to afford me that chance by giving me your vote.

CLAIRE MOIR

Dressage has played a huge part in my life. I trained with Jennie Loriston-Clarke, where I gained ualifications and a huge amount of knowledge and experience. I bought an ex steeplechaser who I trained to compete in three Junior European Teams.

In 1979 I was awarded a Winston Churchill Travelling ellowship for Sports Coaching. I have won five national titles, and in the last six years have competed at international small tour, and nationally at Grand Prix level.

I have earned my living as a freelance coach all over the world, as well as mentoring riders here on Pony, Junior, and Young ider Teams. However, many of my clients are adults and ride purely for pleasure. I am also a ist Judge, a BDCC evel Coach, Coach Educator and Assessor. I was the fi rst B DS’ South West epresentative, formerly Chef d’E uipe of our Junior and Young Rider Teams, and I am currently serving as BD outh Director.

I wish to be proactive as the Chair of the sport I love. I am aware of the threats that e uestrian sport faces, and I will work hard to mitigate them. I will not forget that, as a registered charity, we must keep horse welfare at the heart of everything. I want BD to have a sustainable future, by embracing technology, improving our online presence, and reducing our reliance on paper.

I would like to make it easier for members to access training and competition opportunities local to them to lessen costs.

I wish to promote education within the sport and fi rmly support e ual

opportunities. I want every BD member to feel valued, listened to and recognised. We need to reach outside the mainstream e uestrian community and introduce them to dressage. inally, we must recognise and support horse owners and breeders. Without them, our record at Championship level over the past decade would not have been possible and I thank them wholeheartedly.

rom a personal point of view, I would stand by my priorities, be accessible and available to members, show leadership, and support BD head o ce and the CEO. I would also initiate a support group for our owners, represent the interests of BD at national and international forums when re uired, champion BD both inside and outside equestrianism and be present at major BD national and international events.

My passions are the horse, our relationship with our equine partners in dressage, and the positive effects they have on our character, mental well being and physical fitness.

y vision of the future sees dressage safeguarded and respected, both nationally and internationally, challenging the elitist image of the sport, ensuring BD members feel included and listened to, offering educational programmes for all, and recognising the support we receive from owners.

I am a good communicator with a well developed sense of humour, comfortable when speaking in public and chairing meetings. I am willing to travel, listen to people, and I am not afraid of hard work or responsibility. I enjoy leading a team and would be honoured to be the Chair of BD.

MEET THE CANDIDATE UP FOR RE-ELECTION FOR THE ROLE OF INTERNATIONAL DIRECTOR

JUDY HARVEY

I have very much enjoyed the amazing highs and the tough challenges of being International Director for British Dressage for the last four years.

We have made significant progress in how our international teams are selected and managed. Much, if not all, of the credit is due to the BD o ce team, a highly skilled and motivated bunch of people who make it all happen. They work tirelessly to ensure that the wheels turn smoothly and guarantee that our riders have every chance to prove themselves capable of reaching those hallowed podiums.

Achieving medals at international championships is always our ultimate goal, but providing a smooth pathway for our riders to rise out of the ranks and get to the top is what we are all about.

Since 2011, when GBR was established as a major power on the international scene, we have continued to enjoy medal success at major championships. 2021 saw us win both team and individual medals at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, and at the European Championships in Hagen, despite Covid, Brexit and EHV.

We have strived to make selections that are fair, justifi able and in accordance with the relevant selection policies. This is vital to select the strongest teams and prevent the unpleasantness and expense of selection appeals.

Using technology and live streaming to see riders’ performances as they happen has been a great innovation. Whilst being there in person is always to be preferred, the costs of travel

and subsistence have been significantly reduced by our selectors having access to live streamed events.

The selection team have a wealth of knowledge and experience of international dressage and we all work well together to arrive at conclusions that provide fair opportunities to riders, based on the merit of their individual performances. The tension around the table at championship selection time is palpable, but we all want to send the strongest team capable of bringing back medals.

Under 21 selectors require an eagle eye to spot new talent – at this level combinations can appear out of nowhere, with new horses and ponies along the route also coming into play.

It was fantastic to achieve individual medal status in Juniors last year, while the Young Riders win in Le Mans recently puts us in a very good place for the European Championships at Hartpury this year.

Medals are the goal, but

with fair, clean sport and horse welfare the priority. I have been involved in competitive dressage since 1978 as a judge, trainer, organiser, selector, commentator, and most importantly for this role, international rider.

I am prepared to continue with the challenge of being International Director thanks to the support that I get from the BD Board, Selectors, Performance Managers and Chef d’Equipes, as well as the BEF World Class and BD o ce teams.

I continue to relish the responsibility and hope that the BD Members, and especially the riders, will honour and endorse me with their support in seeking this opportunity for a further four-year term.

2022 BOARD ELECTIONS: JUDGES DIRECTOR

MEET THE CANDIDATE UP FOR RE-ELECTION FOR THE ROLE OF JUDGES DIRECTOR

PETER STORR

Dressage has been an intrinsic part of my life for over five decades and I’ve been fortunate to experience the sport at the elite level as a rider, trainer and judge, which gives me an all round perspective. In 0 0 I ualified as a 5* level judge, which is the highest level as an international judge in dressage. This appointment enables me to judge at major events such as the European Championships, World Championships, World Cup inals and lympic Games. I consider it a great privilege to be at this level in a sport that I am so passionate about, and I’m in a uni ue position to bring all that knowledge with me as Judges Director to the British Dressage Board.

I’ve been Judges Director on the BD Board since 01 and have heavily invested my time into developing a Judge Education Project with my fellow committee members and head o ce team. It has now been launched and we anticipate that it will be a world leading programme that revolutionises how our judges train, learn and are examined. It looks at the judges’ role, technical knowledge and conduct as a whole and provides them with an all round skillset, which will produce better judges and in turn raise standards throughout the sport.

By continuing as a BD Board member, I believe we need to empower a culture of transparency where feedback is essential to driving standards higher. I’d like to encourage more members to consider judging and to reward those who do embark on this very valuable pathway.

ooking forward, our sport faces certain challenges if we are to continue our successes of recent years. A traditional image, lack of public understanding and openness, ill informed media coverage, and perceived welfare issues, all contribute to the feeling that dressage is exclusive and only for a particular section of society. This is still an issue, even though we all strive for higher standards, wider education and greater inclusivity so I do think more needs to be done by all who represent dressage.

Judges have an essential part to play in this sport we are the guardians of standards, welfare and fair play and I will continue to bring this view to the BD Board.

I feel that my extensive experience within British Dressage, knowledge of the sport from several different viewpoints, and commitment to improve dressage in our country for future generations to enjoy, gives me the perfect opportunity to give back to the sport. Dressage is my life’s passion, and I intend to put that commitment into the role and carry on the momentum to make dressage a modern, inclusive and enjoyable sport for all. It would be a privilege and honour to continue my position for a second term.

JOINT ISSUES CAN BE A COMMON FACTOR AFFECTING EQUINE PERFORMANCE. EMMA PENNY TALKS TO EXPERTS ABOUT WHAT CAN BE DONE.

Mostof us have sat on a horse at some point and wondered if it is feeling a bit less flexible or forward than usual, and then considered what our next steps should be. These days, a multitude of treatments, supplements and therapies give plenty of options, but diagnosing what’s wrong in the first place can be complicated too.

FEI veterinary surgeon Howard Newitt says the onset of potential joint issues can be very subtle. “It could be lameness, but it could also be di culty performing a certain movement or if the horse is very one-sided.

“It is worth considering whether it is a training issue or a physical cause, particularly if it is a horse in the early stages or going up the levels. Does the horse understand what it being asked of it?”

Where it is deemed to be a physical issue, a chat with your vet should be the next logical step. “When they visit, they can decide whether a lameness investigation is needed, or whether physio or a change in shoeing might help. In many cases, the vet, physio and farrier need to work together.”

Flexible

Where a lameness work-up is required, the horse is likely to have nerve blocks, x-rays, and ultrasound scans as a fairly standard procedure, says Mr Newitt. The options for treatment of a joint issue will depend on whether it is a high motion joint, such as the fetlock, which has a big range of motion, or a low motion joint such as the lower hock joint. If there are multiple joints involved, this too will be taken into account.

“The choice of treatment will also depend on the level of the problem and the competition schedule as not all treatments are competition legal.” Any treatment or supplement can be checked on the FEI Clean Sport website, though Mr Newitt cautions that withdrawal periods are only a guide, and that a safety margin must be built in where competitions are scheduled.

He says cortisone joint injections fall into the FEI ‘not permitted’ category, but newer biologic products, which are harvested from the horse’s blood or bone marrow to produce natural anti infl ammatory products or growth factors, are allowed under FEI rules.

However, any joint injections come with risks such as infection and, where steroids are used, laminitis. “These complications are rare, but they do happen. For this reason, best practice is to have a lameness investigation before any injections so you base the treatment on evidence rather than guessing.

“We would also look at what else we might be able to change to help the horse.

For instance for arthritis in the foot, being scrupulous about shoeing and foot balance and using a pad or wedge might help. And if the issue is in the back or sacroiliac, regular physio can often be integral in keeping the horse functioning well.”

Depending on the vet’s fi ndings, managing joint issues may mean reducing the intensity of training, replacing some of the repetition of schooling with hacking or using a treadmill, he says. “Also, think about targeting training

like athletes do – factor in easy weeks and plan to build up to a competition so you are not keeping your horse at peak fitness all the time.”

The old-fashioned approach of knowing your horse’s legs really well is still valid, he adds. “Notice any small changes or pu ness. neven shoe wear is another thing to look for and to talk to your farrier, vet and physio about.

“I’d also recommend getting into the habit of trotting your horse up the day after a competition – it’s good practice for competitions, and also means you can monitor for any stiff ness or changes as the earlier you spot things, the easier they are to manage.”

Supplements are a good fi rst step with no real downside other than cost, he says. “It can be di cult to compare the level of ingredients in different products so work out what is in the daily dose and also ensure products have the BETA NOPS label which minimises the risk of accidental contamination from NOPS (Naturally Occurring Prohibited Substances).”

than the cost of the tub so that you can budget and it’s not a shock.”

Nupafeed’s Jemma Noble agrees that it can sometimes be confusing to work through the jargon and sales pitches. “Stick with proven nutrients and make sure they are at the right level, not just a token amount.”

Kate Hore from NAF explains that manufacturers of nutritional products cannot say their products will treat a particular issue. “Feed supplements come under feed legislation, so no medical claims can be made. But we can say that supplements will maintain, supplement, optimise or nourish.”

Two distinct types of supplements exist – those that ‘feed’ or ‘nourish’ structures such tendons, ligaments and synovial fluid, which generally contain glucosamine, MSM, chondroitin, antioxidants and ingredients such as Omega-3. The other type of

While Kate says there is little doubt these can have a positive effect, for most active competition horses, opting for a ‘nourishing’ type of product will provide the ‘building blocks’ for good long-term joint health.

Consulting these companies’ customer helplines can reduce ‘supplement complexity’, says Kate. “At times, people can end up feeding half a dozen products which may end up masking one another – we can help simplify that.”

TREATMENT

Treating joint disease is a challenge as the condition tends to be progressive. Traditionally the aim was to keep the horse as comfortable as possible by administering anti-in ammatory painkillers or injecting the affected joint with corticosteroids to reduce in ammation.

However there have been great advances recently which have enabled a new generation of ‘orthobiologic’ disease-modifying treatments to be considered.

Loadingup for a show for one horse is bad enough, but can you imagine the organisation required for a number of horses? This is the reality faced by Gareth and Rebecca Hughes’ groom Steph Sharples who often has multiple horses to pack for. So, how does she do it?

“I like to start getting things together a couple of days in advance so I can see what I have and what I still need to pack – it’s a lot easier when it is all laid out in front of you,” explains Steph. “I’m a creature of habit so tend to pack every item in the same order.”

Steph has ‘mental’ packing lists to help her organise kit.

“I have done so many shows now that the lists are printed into my brain,” she explains. “I work along the shelves getting the items I want which is a fail-proof system for me.”

There some items that can be left on the lorry including buckets, spare head collars, towels, shampoos, sprays, a set of ice boots, fi rst aid kit (human and horse), a spare set of stirrup leathers and curb chain and hooks “The smaller items are easy to drop off or lose, so I like having spares.”

Everything has its place in the lorry so Steph knows where to go to get it.

“I have two shelves – the top one has towels and the one below has shampoos, sprays, lotions etc with a box of spare curb chains/hooks and bridle numbers.”

Steph admits that the main packing challenge is space.

“I don’t travel lightly!” she laughs. “I always have plenty of spare shavings, haylage and feed to allow for any damage in transit, and I basically have spare of everything.”

At the Hughes’ yard, it is generally the groom going to the show who does the packing.

“Sometimes they can be reluctant to drink on the lorry so we tempt them with something to fl avour the water and if this doesn’t work, I will syringe water into them,” says Steph. “ eeding a sloppy mash while waiting for a boat or train ensures water intake too.

“In terms of forage, we are very lucky that our haylage supplier provides us with small bales so the horses stay on the forage they are used to.”

EVEN LOADING

With a little planning you can employ every inch of space in the lorry or trailer while staying within the payload, as Tom Janion of E ui Trek explains

“ any of our trailers have living accommodation or tack changing areas and these are positioned at the front of the trailer to ensure that once horses are on board the load is spread as evenly as possible. FEEDING ON THE GO

Travelling has a significant effect on weight loss due in the main to dehydration.

“ luid and electrolyte imbalances are part and parcel of weight loss, particularly when horses start to suffer from diarrhoea at the sight of the horsebox and during transit,” adds i ie. “ esearch has suggested that horses lose two to five pounds of body weight for every hour that they travel, and this takes three to five days to be regained in a normal healthy horse.”

The physiological and mental stresses of travelling, coupled with the risk of dehydration that can potentially lead to colic, means that it is important to identify and minimise the stress so that you allow for greater overall health and well being.

TOP TIPS

Weigh your horse so you know his fighting’ weight. This will also enable you to work out how much weight you will need to replace once he returns from a long journey before you take him out again.

•Ideally a horse should be eating at least 2% of its bodyweight as forage to keep his digestive system healthy and stimulate saliva production to buffer against gastric ulcers. Check that you are using feeds and supplements that are suitable to be fed prior to and during competition under clean sport’ rules. ake sure your horse has access to a salt block and supplement his feed with 50 150g of salt depending upon work levels and weather conditions.

Horses can be reluctant to drink strange water away from home. Start practising at home by encouraging your horse to drink flavoured water. Alternatively make sure that you have water containers on board to take enough home’ water with you.

n the day of competition, try to keep feeding routines as normal as possible. In the event of very early starts, let your horse eat his breakfast at least an hour before you go.

n long journeys, make water stops at least every two hours and ensure that water is continually available on arrival. Allow your horse to regularly pick at grass or nibble his haynet to keep up saliva production.

If your horse is going to have some time off after a show, then remember to halve his concentrate feed if he is on a high energy cereal based product. If he is on a fibre based diet and can be turned out then he can remain on full rations.

FORAGE FORAYS

Careful consideration to your horse’s forage and a small amount of pre show preparation can help to reduce the influence of digestive disturbance during the show season, says Deborah Leabeater, Msc, CBiol, MRIB, nutritionist to HorseHage.

“Sudden changes in forage may lead to health complications such as colic and using different forage is often overlooked when staying away at show. Taking your horses’ normal forage will help maintain consistency.

“Horses can often spend a lot of their time in a confined space such as a trailer, horsebox or stable when competing or away training,” she adds.

“Choosing a forage that is dust free, good quality and with nutrient values suitable for their individual needs, such as HorseHage High ibre, will help to improve the uality of their environment and reduce the risk of respiratory issues.

Grazing your horse in-hand or allowing them access to forage as often as possible will help them to trickle feed and maintain a healthy digestive system.

SHIPPING FEVER

“A major problem for the serious competitor is shipping fever or pleuropneumonia, a term that is used to describing physiological, particularly respiratory stress during and following long journeys,” explains Lizzie. “The reasons are many, including poor air quality, poor ventilation and restricted head movement. All these compromise optimum lung function and defence mechanisms, which allows for bacteria Streptococcus Zooepidemicus to become established. Symptoms include coughing, fever, nasal discharge, and respiratory distress.”

Prompt and aggressive treatment is required and usually effective, although preventing the problem from occurring is preferable.

“We try and prevent shipping fever by keeping the horses cool and hydrated during transit,” says Steph Sharples. “If you have room to do so then trying to get their heads down, tempting with carrots or apples is also helpful.”

TROT ON

Fundamentalto a good trot are the backs of both the horse and the rider. From the horse’s perspective the propulsive force generated in the hind uarters needs to flow through a supple swinging back along the neck to the mouth where the rider can feel a forward elastic contact. The rider’s back needs to be balanced and supple enough not to suppress the movement and, as required, be a driving aid to encourage the generation of the propulsive force.

The EI’s description of a good trot is The uality of the trot is judged by the general impression, i.e. the regularity and the elasticity of the steps, the cadence and impulsion both in collection and extension.’

This uality originates from a supple back and well engaged hind uarters, and by the ability to maintain the same rhythm and natural balance within all the variations of the trot and in all transitions.

It all starts, as always, with the basics and acceptance of steady progressive training of the whole horse that saves the development of expression until the horse is stronger and more established.

The fi rst aim is rhythm to which there are three stages, the fi rst two relating to regularity 1. the correct se uence of the footfalls when the diagonal pairs move alternately with a moment of suspension between . the tempo which is the speed of the rhythm, crucial to getting the horse to produce its best trot

. ultimately cadence where there is a pronounced rhythm, clear impulsion and lightening of the steps without increasing tension.

EARLY TRAINING

Finding a tempo that helps a horse to let go and work well is a primary task. Too fast and the horse is tense and not listening, too slow and it is being la y and not using its body well. Correcting the speedy horse is done through half halts, transitions, giving and retaking the reins, circles and use of the voice. Any strong or pulling contact will inhibit the correct controllable forward tendency that starts in the hindquarters.

It can help to make an over eager horse la y enough for the rider to be able to put the leg on.

There are many suggestions as to how to encourage the lazy horse to be more reactive, from giving more feed, making the work more fun with exercises in the country and jumping, when in the arena a fi rm kick and or tap with the whip and a reward if the horse responds, to use of voice and avoiding work in small circles and intricate patterns.

Working forward to the bit is particularly important for the trot. The rider must be able to use the driving aids while the horse keeps the desired tempo and accepts the contact in the bit. It may be necessary to freshen up the trot, to ride more forward to achieve this, or to steady the tempo until light driving aids can be applied without any speeding up.

Work to encourage a soft swinging back needs focusing on to make the most of a horse’s trot. It is achieved through developing the scales of training, rhythm (see above), suppleness, contact and as the horse gets stronger and more receptive, impulsion. The greater the impulsion as controlled power, the more expressive the trot can be. Any lack of straightness will inhibit the swing through the back and it is only if the training has been good that collection becomes feasible and ultimately piaffe and passage.

At the start most trainers strengthen and supple the back by stretching and building

up those muscles and ligaments along the top line. This can be achieved by getting the horse to stretch frontward and down towards a forward tending contact. With persistence over time this stretch can be turned from the back being straightish and the forehand a little heavy, into engaged hindquarters, a rounded back and neck, with the rider feeling a pleasing forward light elastic contact. This can be maintained when working in circles and serpentines or during a break, at the beginning and end of work sessions, or for a few strides as a reward when doing normal work.

THE RIDER’S ROLE

iders have a significant role in establishing a good trot. It is the pace riders can improve more easily than any other and also worsen. The rider needs:

• To be able to give controlled driving aids with legs and seat so that it is clear to the horse what is required.

• To be able to hold the reins so the thumbs are uppermost and the arms flexible enabling a forward feeling elastic contact that is not rigid and only pulls back in an emergency.

• To develop a seat that is supple enough to follow the movement and strong enough to hold an upright balanced position. These are the aims for the rider to work towards to help the horse’s back muscles to strengthen and swing. There is always the option to rise rather than sit to the trot and even the most competent riders use this with young horses, at the start and end of sessions and in advanced work when they feel the back needs freeing.

VARIATIONS IN THE HORSE’S NATURAL TROT

Horses are born with different ualities to their trot and it is up to the rider to work within the possibilities. Encouraging the development of a back that is supple, and swings as the horse moves from one diagonal pair to the next, will help all horses, including those born with restricted flat steps.

For the horses born with trots where the whole body moves and the moment of suspension is clear, they can find it di cult to stay balanced and calm. Such horses need to have the driving aids for impulsion taken off and even a slowing of the tempo until they get stronger, less tense and can keep their rhythm.

The important factor is to recognise and work within the capabilities of each individual horse, to keep developing the scales of training and as these consolidate seek consistent movement through the back and the development of impulsion and expression.

EXERCISES

Polework can develop joints that are flexible, limbs that are active and encourage the horse to stretch forward and down.

eg yield supples the back and helps the momentum to go through it.

A classic exercise to promote this is to start on a 0m circle, spiral in to an appropriate smaller one and leg yield out to the bigger one to take some medium strides or to stretch forward and down.

Good transitions are the exercises that are beneficial in all aspects of training. That can mean between paces and within the trot. ital, is to keep the same tempo. In downward and shortening transitions, riding forward to apply half halts and keeping the engagement. Into longer strides ensure they start from the hind uarters and not letting the horse pull from the forehand (see article on the canter in issue for details of the exercise).

JUDGE DEVELOPMENT GOES HIGH TECH

The programme is the final element in an extensive update of the system which will help judges to develop their skills more effectively alongside a busy working life or a career outside the industry.

Training and education manager Charlotte sborne explains

“Historically, the type of training was inconsistent across the country, and arranging assessment could be costly and challenging. We wanted to fi nd a system that could combine CPD and online training and assessment in a way that could be accessed anywhere, even abroad.”

The training programme was extensively overhauled, including upskilling the judge education workforce, Charlotte explains.

“BD subsidised 50 of the training costs for tutor judges and judge educators, leading to a professional ualification in tutoring and assessing, in order to address feedback from judges who felt that the previous system didn’t necessarily meet their individual development needs.”

Candidates register to become Trainee judges and then take part in an induction session. They can then decide whether to remain a trainee by attending an annual seminar, or register to the Judge Education system and become listed by undertaking an assessment at the appropriate level.

Training and workshops for both Technical (relating to paces, way of going etc) and on Technical (aspects such as responsibilities as a judge and offering guidance to competitors on how to improve etc) must be attended before assessment. Technical training includes workshops and

seminars which comprise D D sessions to discuss tests as well as with live horses. on technical workshops can be attended online or in person.

Self directed activities sitting in, writing, practice judging and observing training are also part of the training modules.

A portfolio is provided in hard copy or online format to enable candidates to record evidence of completing the modules and track their progress.

“We’ve used feedback from competitors to help develop non technical training,” comments Charlotte. “Working towards safer sport and high standards of horse and rider welfare was not included previously. Judges hold an important position in the sport and we must ensure they are well prepared.

All candidates at the level will judge the same horses, and from the same perspective, as the master judges setting the marks.

Charlotte explains: “This platform gives detailed analysis of the candidate’s performance score by score rather than on a horse by horse basis as previously, so they will get clear feedback on their stronger and weaker areas.”

The assessment involves the candidate and their writer logging into a Zoom call (where they will connect with the invigilator) and judging 11 tests (including a practice test) in two and a half hours via the Black Horse One dashboard, with the judge viewing the test video and the writer completing the test sheet on separate devices.

Judges will have completed three practise tests to familiarise themselves with the process and the dashboard before coming forward for assessment.

BD has produced a series of tutorials in different formats to help candidates use the new system and regional Black Horse One champions will be available to help people who need more guidance at local level.

Extensive trials have included conducting live pilots with demo testers, along with using data sets from previous assessments to pressure test the new system, Charlotte explains. “When Covid led to the cancellation of the assessments in 2020, we had 120 candidates ready to take their assessments and after the extensive piloting, this was the best way to support them.”

The technology, she adds, gives much more thorough analysis of detail such as whether judges are within close range of the master judge for individual horses and if serious mistakes, such as not spotting a late change behind, are made.

CASE STUDY

List 2a judge Sarah Kingwells, who combines her role with teaching and riding, was one of the first to sit the new assessment.

“I became a judge to enhance my teaching and riding but also to put something back into the sport. Through the training and assessment you learn so much, and the new system can only further that,” she comments.

Sarah undertook online training during the pandemic and quickly saw its benefits. e were in smaller groups, so it was easy to stop and start a test and to discuss what we were seeing. Tutor judges can pick up any issues that you are having at any stage and address them before that module is signed off, so you can be confident that you are ready for the next step.

“The assessment was much more in depth and there was better feedback – every mark and comment is compared to that of the master judge, and you get so much more detail on how you have performed.”

ith a friend as her writer, arah did the assessment at home, and comments that although she is not ‘techy’, she was able to work her way through it.

“Assessments are cumulative, and all factors are considered, if there is a weakness it doesn’t mean the candidate automatically fails.”

Technology has become part of everyday life, she points out, and the new system brings dressage right up to date: “The use of judging technology is becoming more commonplace, with many benefits for organisers, competitors and spectators, but many judges are nervous about it. Getting used to working with an online platform for training and assessments will help with familiarisation. Paperless judging also makes environmental sense, and in 10 years’ time all judging may be done on iPads.”

“I’d already done an online seminar, so although there was a tutorial available, I didn’t feel that I needed it. You do need to practice judging on a screen, but you are still judging the test as you would a live competition and the quality of the image is very good.”

She adds: “In the previous system I would have needed to drive from my home in Preston to ellington Riding, which is four and a half hours away, and my writer would have had to take a day off work, so it was also easier and more convenient.

However, live training is still very much part of the process, Sarah points out: “You still need to do sitting in and observing training, but the new system is based around smaller groups rather than large seminars, so there’s more opportunity to get involved, rather than feel embarrassed to ask a ‘silly’ question in front of a lot of people. It meant that I felt ready for the assessment and more confident, and I m already looking forward to upgrading to list one.”

“Areas of high pressure from a girth is exerted on the area behind the elbow, rather than the sternum as previously thought. Designs should avoid high pressures in this area, particularly as the forelimb is retracted during locomotion.”

Pressure may be evidenced by girth rubs, and ussell points out that the trend for using a short girth to keep the buckles away from the rider’s legs can contribute to this.

“The rider’s leg is unlikely to come into contact with the buckles so riders should try and use an anatomical girth to keep the buckles away from the elbow.”

The use of elastic in the construction of a girth remains contentious, he comments.

“Certain horses may benefit from elastic. But this very much depends on the uality of the elastic itself, as it

can overstretch, leading to over tightening, instability and in cases of saddle slip, can cause the saddle slip to be increased.

“In our trials with racehorses, research has shown no biomechanical advantage/ disadvantage from using elastic over a solid anatomical girth the solid girths consistently performed in a similar way if not better than elasticated girths, but it should be considered on a case by case basis.”

ussell comments that, to date, there is little scientific research available on girths which feature multi-components, and it should be considered that if pressure is removed from one area i.e the sternum, pressures will be distributed elsewhere.

“Sadly, you can’t eliminate pressure completely.”

eather and its synthetic e uivalents have endured as materials for making girths, but he points out that the use of a pressure reducing material on the lining of the girth is as important as what is on the outside. A pressure relieving material lining a girth can help reduce girth pressures and improve girth comfort.

“We must be careful not to use any materials that can cause abrasion. When using training aids such as running reins, ensure that the girth has a ring or clip to attach to the outside, rather than threading the loop around the girth which will create a ridge of pressure on the midline.”

Half pads are another accessory provoking discussion. In a recent research project, ussell and his team tested half pads on 1 dressage horses. All saddles were fitted by ualified saddle fitters, and using a plain unpadded dressage s uare underneath which acted as the control.

“A gel pad was shown to increase pressure at the front of the saddle, between the 10th and 1 th thoracic vertebrae at trot and canter and did not offer any pressure reducing advantages. However, a wool pad had no impact on the pressures at the front of the saddle, and reduced pressures at the rear. A medical grade closed cell foam pad also had no impact on pressure distribution at the front of the saddle but, like the wool pad reduced pressures at the rear,” he reports.

The trial suggested that by reducing pressures in the way shown by the wool and closed cell foam pads, they could help minimise forces exerted on the horse’s back by the rider.

“It should be emphasised that the trials used brand new pads and didn’t consider how an older wood pad would perform as over time, the wool pads can deform and lose their shock absorbing capacity. edical grade foam, however, shouldn’t deform.”

ne of the reasons for the increased pressures seen with the gel half pad was that the one tested did not have a spine’, and as a result was prone to being pulled down onto the withers, leading to pressure being exerted at the front, he explains.

Another important point is that saddle fit needs to be checked and if need be fitted to accommodate a half pad, so riders must discuss any half pad use with their saddle fitter. “ iders must consider the fit of the half pad itself it must go beyond the end of the saddle to avoid creating its own pressure point, the pad sitting beneath the edge of the panel.”

When choosing a pad, ussell recommends checking how the material will perform under load.

“We need to understand how it will work on the horse, due to the dynamic forces generated as the horse moves. What looks like a lovely soft pad might not be ideal in practice test how uickly the material reforms when sandwiched between a saddle (and rider) and horse.”

Stirrup choice can have an influence on the whole rider system’, he explains.

“The stirrup iron can help with proprioception, enabling the rider to place their weight e ually to the left and right, and solid plated stirrups can give the rider good feedback. Consider that in trot, you

are transferring your weight forwards and retuning back to neutral, effectively in a semi s uat position, so a solid surface maybe better. Pilot studies on flexible stirrups suggest that they give energy back into the rider, which can lead to rider instability.”

Wide plates, he points out, can offer a mechanical advantage in that the rider has a better idea of where the foot is in relation to the plate, while cheese grater’ treads can help with grip.

“Angled stirrups make biomechanical sense as they allow the iron to hang straight and swivelling attachments which allow the stirrup to run at a different line to the leather mean that the leather is flat and can help position the foot in the correct position.”

He adds that angled treads can be used to help with specific issues such as pronation or supination of the feet.

“You may feel crooked if the saddle is slipping, but never correct this by riding with unlevel stirrups as it can affect the horse’s stability.”

He comments that riders having different leg lengths’ needs to be clinically verified before altering stirrup length.

“It’s more often a pelvic asymmetry than one of actual leg length and a physiotherapist can help with this.”

BIOMECHANICS RESEARCH LEADS TO INNOVATION

An interesting approach is the Rider in Balance stirrup, developed by rider biomechanics specialist Maria Terese Engell, who is also the team vet for the Norwegian paralympic squad, Russell suggests.

r Engell s research into the in uence of the rider’s foot position on their body position in the saddle found a direct relationship between how the rider walks, through how they sit in a balance chair to how they sit in the saddle.

“Many people exhibit over-pronation, where they lean into the inside of the foot. With a conventional stirrup, the rider

and too long can position the leg forward of the ideal ear, shoulder, hip, ankle line. Work with your team to get the correct stirrup length–there should be a ~45 deg angle from the thigh to the ground, and the ankle should be in line with the hip.” ■

has unstable legs, so they can’t get their leg around the belly of the horse without putting pressure on their knee.”

She explains that she saw an extreme example of this with a para rider whom despite several operations, was unable to have control of her foot in the stirrup. By drilling a hole in the inside of the iron and threading the leather through this second hole, the stirrup was rotated outwards allowing the rider to straighten her foot and realign her body.

“I developed a prototype with the extra hole designed in, and by altering how the leather is threaded, it is possible to change the degree of rotation depending on what is needed to the left and right. The two-point

attachment also makes the stirrup more stable. The rider can put more pressure on the stirrup and trust their foot balance.”

Dr Engell comments that riders need to experiment with different positions to see what suits them best. Longer traditional leathers are needed to accommodate the amount taken up by the second attachment point, but a second leather which slips over the first has also been developed.

It s a different approach riders need to be objective about their position and consider how they can train their body to enable them to ride better.”

A QUESTION OF COLOUR

The white saddle pad is synonymous with dressage, and there s no doubt it can look very smart and enhance the whole picture. But did you know that white is not compulsory?

The BD Rulebook states: Saddle cloths or numnahs are to be predominantly white/ cream or a conservative colour. Contrasting piping is permitted.

1. OUTLINE YOUR AIMS

“Think about why you’re setting up a social media page,” says Sarah Skillin of equestrian marketing agency EquiConsulting. “What do you plan to get out of it? Maybe you’re a professional rider or trainer aiming to attract rides, gain clients and generally market yourself, or an amateur looking to secure support from brands. Perhaps you’d just enjoy keeping your social circle up to date with your news.

“A personal profile on acebook will have limited reach and exposure and people will have to connect with you, but could be ideal for sharing your experiences with those in your network, whereas a acebook page will always be public and is often used by businesses, brands and organisations. Anyone can follow an Instagram page, unless it is specifically kept private. Considering what you hope to achieve will dictate the type of social media platform that will suit your needs.”

2. MAXIMISE OPPORTUNITIES

It’s not just Olympians who gain sponsorship deals; equestrian companies are seeking all kinds of outlets to promote their products and services.

“As a one-horse amateur at elementary championship level, I had the support of a number of brands,” explains Sarah. “I was getting good results and sharing my competitive highs and lows across social. I wasn’t paid, but I was supported with free products or discounted rates on services, so I was making considerable savings.

“If you have the time to invest in maintaining an effective social media presence, the potential is there to gain the support you need to pursue your passion.”

3. CONSIDER YOUR AUDIENCE

With engaging content, riders at all levels can gain a sizeable audience.

“With power comes responsibility,” Sarah points out. “The bigger the social following, the greater the responsibility. If you have a young audience, for example, or lots of grassroots riders, think about what you’re saying or doing. Before you set fun challenges or post suggestions, are they safe and correct for others – who are possibly less experienced – to copy or follow?”

4. KNOW THE RULES

There’s no problem with posting a sincere ‘thank you’ to the brands that support you. But a more blatant marketing push is another matter, warns Sarah.

“There are key rules,” she explains. “While an honest and genuine personal recommendation may be acceptable, some top riders fail to disclose incentivised or paid relationships with the brands they’re working with.

“If you’re receiving any form of financial incentive, be it a discount, gifted products or payment by a brand, you’re legally bound to disclose that relationship,” adds Sarah, who recommends checking up on the ASA (Advertising Standards Agency) rules. “ any riders don’t believe that the regulations apply to them, but they do – and there are stiff fines and penalties if you fall foul of them.”

5. BE PROFESSIONAL

“Be careful what you’re putting out there,” says Sarah, who advises keeping a clear distinction between personal and professional profiles. “Posting videos on a professional channel of the time you were drunk in the corner of a

nightclub will do you no favours. Using the word ‘dressage’ or ‘equestrian’ after your name and sticking to business is one way to maintain a professional ‘shop window’.

“Hyperflexion sometimes termed rollkur is a particularly hot topic. Be aware of showing schooling videos with any sign that a horse is working behind the vertical, which might be interpreted as hyperflexion. This is potentially damaging not only to your own brand, but to the sport as a whole.”

While engaging with people and brands can be good for the algorithms that boost your profi le and help you grow, the fl ipside of greater reach is more risk.

“Make sure that any opinions you post are valid, professional and do not bring the sport into disrepute,” adds Sarah, who adds that although you can take down a post, it only takes a few seconds for someone to take a

screenshot. “Slander and defamation still apply, so what you’re saying must be true. The best advice is to think before you speak.”

6. KEEP IT REAL

“Being honest is more important than ever,” says Sarah. “Increasingly, social media followers are interested in the genuine person behind the polished exterior. They want to see that top riders are real and that not everything is perfect.

“Even at the lower levels, be careful not to over infl ate your success online so that you fail to deliver in reality. Tell people if you’re struggling, or you forget the test, as it makes you more relatable, but always outline what you’ve learned. If you’re going through a bad patch, explain that you’ll be re-focusing on training for a while to work through what’s wrong. And if you need some ‘me time’ for your mental health, it’s OK to say that you’ll be going quiet for a while to take a break.”

7. MAINTAIN YOUR COOL

Promoting yourself does increase the potential for unwelcome comments. What’s the best way to respond?

“If it’s something you can quash without full discussion, deal with it and move on,” suggests Sarah. “Maybe someone has made an incorrect assumption about the tack you’re using and you can correct with it with one post.

If people are being hideous, however, you can always hide comments – or just ignore them.

“The worst thing is a heated debate online, which is not good for your mental health or the sport’s public image.”

8. BE CONSISTENT

“If you’re usually super-active online, the worst thing is then to disappear off the face of the earth,” says Sarah.

“People worry and this can spark speculation and more conversation about what’s happened.

“A professional rider with sponsors, owners and clients will need some regularity and a steady stream of posts. As a happy amateur, using social media for fun, this is not so important – although it’s great for the sport if you publicise your competition journey.” For more information visit equiconsulting.co.uk

SHEEPGATE UNDER 25 CHAMPIONSHIPS

22 – 27 AUGUST

The Under 25 Championships are open to combinations who are 25 years old and under. Full membership and horse registration is required to compete. Riders may take part until the end of the year of their 25th Birthday. Horse maybe any height or age.

The championship will comprise of Team and Individual Championships, and more information please refer to page 160 rule 175 of the 2022 members handbook.

A trip to the LeMieux National Dressage Championships wouldn’t be complete without the commentary, interviews and witty repartee provided by the Radio Nationals duo of Kim Ratcli e and John Bowen. This has become an integral part of the Nationals experience for many. We were delighted to catch up with Kim, a List 1 Judge, National Para Judge and BDCC Level 3 Coach who also sits on the BD Sport Operations Committee. Kim (pictured on holiday in Turkey) lives near Waltham Cross in Hertfordshire and, when away from the dressage arena, has a great passion for travel.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

I worked in banking for 27 years and for the last few was a Senior Corporate Manager working with companies who were in trouble and who owed multi-millions to large groups of institutions. From 1990 onwards I used up all of my holiday allowance training to become a judge. I went overseas to watch the best, as standards weren’t as high in the UK as they are now, and went from List 6 to List 1 in 10 years.

After taking redundancy in 2001, I started training dressage riders and took my UKCC Level 3 as I love learning.

I started Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) training whilst still at the bank. It’s helped me to understand the diff erent ways riders think and learn, so they can understand

themselves and their personal styles better to enhance their learning. I’ve also been working with David Sanders of Neuromechanics Academy as I want to help riders maximise their riding for the benefi t of the horse.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRED YOUR LOVE OF DRESSAGE?

y fi rst mentor was Inger Bryant, a List 1 Swedish judge and trainer who really understood horses and how our interactions with them can help or hinder their performance. The fi rst horse that really inspired me was Marzog ridden by Anne Grethe Jensen. He was a very supple and exciting horse with a quiet, balanced rider.

YOUR BEST RADIO NATIONALS ANECDOTE!

There’s been plenty – mostly me being the subject of John’s

banter! I was re-named Cougar Kim after I took a few photos of a well-known male rider (I’ll spare his blushes), but I had off ered to do that for his sponsor, who liked some photos I’d taken of him in France at WEG, so it was very innocent!

The Nationals always coincides with my birthday, and one year I was being treated to a glass or two of champagne by the very generous Anna Ross when Carl Hester popped into the studio and nicknamed us ‘the lushes’!

HOW AND WHEN DID YOU FIRST TAKE YOUR POSITION BEHIND THE MIC?

I was invited to commentate fi rst around 5 years ago at the Nationals, and then at the European Championships at Hickstead in 2003.

DESTINATIONS REMAIN ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?

There’s plenty! I’m hoping to get to Borneo, Sri Lanka and South Africa this year. I’d love to go to Canada and also the Silk Road but probably not yet, given the instability in the region, especially as I was hijacked in Mexico and lost all my luggage – but that’s a long story. I’ve been very lucky, having been to places as diverse as Mongolia, Brazil and Antarctica. There’s still plenty of places to see in India and Africa and I like to vary between cultural and wildlife tours.
