Big up to all the hosts taking part this year: what all us hosts have in common is that we all love music. We all avidly search for new music online and at shows, find our favourites, and give them a platform

Sex and Young Fathers will be thrilling. Likewise Save Your Breath, Slaves and Holy Esque are awesome and heavy live. Legendary radio presenter Steve Lamacq returns to SXSW with some of his favourites on Thursday including Woman’s Hour and Royal Blood playing the BBC Introducing showcase. Temples, The Wytches and the thrilling avant-jazz band Melt Yourself Down promise some nothing short of exhilarating performances across

the week. That of course is the tip of the iceberg, just a flavour of the eclecticism on offer this year from Britain at Latitude 30, at SXSW. We know that we, like you, will hear and see something unexpected and life changing. That’s why we love Austin, and that’s why we love SXSW. Have fun! HUW STEPHENS

UK FILM RECEPTION Presents

About the British Film Commission The British Film Commission (BFC) is the national body in charge of attracting, encouraging and supporting the production of international feature films and high end television in the UK. With offices in London and Los Angeles the BFC provides free professional advice to help make productions in the UK a reality. The BFC is once again hosting its annual reception to celebrate British film at SXSW and promote the UK as the best place in the world to make a movie. This event gives SXSW guests from film, music and games a chance to meet our filmmakers and then enjoy some of the UK’s most exciting new music talent. www.britishfilmcommission.org.uk

SAOR PATROL S U N DAY

The idea for the band came apparently when Charlie Allan was acting in the movie Gladiator (from which there’s a terrific anecdote about Ridley Scott borrowing his battering ram). Saor Patrol (freedom guard in gaelic) fuse the sounds of the past with the present, with bagpipes, folk and rock. Imagine if instead of being from Manhattan, Gogol Bordello were leather tough Celtic warriors and you might start to get the idea… support@clanranaldent.com / saorpatrol.com

Public Service Broadcasting PSB’s uniquely spell-binding live AV Transmissions see them weave samples from old public information films, archive footage and propaganda material around live drums, guitar, banjo and electronics as they teach the lessons of the past through the music of the future. david@liquidmanagement.net publicservicebroadcasting.net

UK FILM LISTINGS This year’s SXSW Film showcases 15+ of the very best of from UK’s indie scene – here are 6 musically themed picks:

AMERICAN INTERIOR UK Welsh musician Gruff Rhys documents the exploits of his 18th c. ancestor the explorer John Evans. Searching for a lost tribe of Welsh-speaking Native Americans, John Evans left Wales in 1792 with only a $1.75. Alone and horseless, he walked the wilderness of the Great Plains reappearing 7 years later as Don Juan Evans having changed the shape of American history. Fiction, fact, fantasy, myth and music documentary collide in American Interior as Rhys uncovers Evans’ legacy.

SCREENINGS

Director: Dylan Goch, Gruff Rhys. Principal Cast: Gruff Rhys, Keith Bear, Cory Spotted Bear, Kliph Scurlock.

FRANK UK/Ireland/US Frank is a comedy about a young wannabe musician, Jon, who discovers he’s bitten off more than he can chew when he joins a band of eccentric musicians led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank and his terrifying sidekick, Clara. Director: Lenny Abrahamson. Principal Cast: Domhnall Gleeson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Michael Fassbender, Scoot McNairy, Carla Azar, Francois Civil

GOD HELP THE GIRL UK In God Help the Girl, first-time writer/director Stuart Murdoch of Belle & Sebastian, creates a comingof-age story that doubles as an indie-pop musical. He nurtured it for a decade into a fully formed film, set in Glasgow & populated by mods, rockers, and emo kids who sing and dance. With its mix of memorable songs and strong performances, God Help the Girl is sure to stick with you. Director: Stuart Murdoch. Principal Cast: Emily Browning, Olly Alexander, Hannah Murray.

SOUL BOYS OF THE WESTERN WORLD UK Soul Boys of the Western World is a voyage through the 80’s in the company of Spandau Ballet, one of the decade’s most iconic bands. This archive-only documentary film tells the story of a group of working-class London lads who created a global music Empire, but at a price none of them imagined. It is a film that speaks not only to fans of the band or those who harbour nostalgia for the 1980s, but to anyone who has ever experienced friendship and loss.

THAT B.E.A.T. USA/UK That B.E.A.T is one of six films shot in a variety of American cities, showcasing the new guard of young talent and the unique sounds of American music today. Showcasing diverse genres, including the strip clubs of Atlanta, the indie scene in Portland, genre mixing soul music from Detroit, underground alternative rap culture in New York City, electro music created in LA’s valley, and of course the sensation of New Orleans’ sissy bounce. Each of the individual films reveals cinematic portraits of distinct music sub cultures. Director: Abteen Bagheri

THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS UK The Possibilities Are Endless tells the incredible story of Edwyn Collins, a Scottish songwriter who suffered a stroke, an explosion in the brain so severe that it effectively deleted the contents of his mind. After a career as an internationally acclaimed lyricist, he lost all language and was only able to say two phrases: “The Possibilities are Endless” and “Grace Maxwell”. Director: Edward Lovelace, James Hall. Principal Cast: Edwyn Collins, Grace Maxwell, William Collins, Yasmin Paige

The WONDER VILLAINS After a sparkling performance at the NI party @ SXSW ’12, these party pop kids from Derry are a very welcome returning act to not only SXSW but The British Music Embassy in particular. SLAVES 2014 is quickly heating up for indie-garage duo Slaves who’ve already confirmed tours across Europe with Blood Red Shoes, DZ Deathrays and Pup. Formed in 2012 by complete accident, they started playing live in their unique set up. It worked! Through constant touring and unforgettable live performances, they’ve become one of the hottest acts coming out of the UK. JUNGLE T U E S DAY

Mysterious XL-signed Londoners Jungle, despite their vast numbers, make delicate, bittersweet soul-funk with a focus on subtlety that is both beguiling and mesmeric. A slot on the coveted BBC sound of 2014 list was just the beginning and every gig so far has been rammed, so expect a roadblock on San Jacinto Tuesday night… sam@verdigrismanagement.com junglejunglejungle.com

Bipolar Sunshine Since the demise of his previous outfit, Kid British, Adio Marchant has made great strides towards fame and fortune under his new guise of Bipolar Sunshine. He’s been hammered by Radio 1, done a track with Rudimental and played Latitude and Lovebox all in the run up to his phenomenal EP “Aethetics”, a sublime slice of urban pop perfection that was released by Polydor last November. simon@sb-management.com bipolarsunshine.com

PRIDES A Neon Gold-endorsed Glaswegian synth trio, Prides made their US debut in October after a summer of fervent online buzz off the back of their excellent debut single “Out Of The Blue” and a spanking remix of Sir Sly’s “Gold”. And all achieved before they’d even played their first London show at The Lexington with Sir Sly himself. allywmccrae@gmail.com joel@deckstar.com pridesband.com

Wolf Alice T U E S DAY

The literarily monikered and eclectic London quartet Wolf Alice have had much support in their short career so far from the likes of Huw Stephens and NME Radar. The band were crowned Britain’s most blogged artist by BBC 6 Music in 2013, and all before an album came into sight. Their excellent EP “Blush” was released by the highly regarded Chess Club imprint in November. cal.mcr@gmail.com facebook.com/wolfalicemusic

Sweet baboo The stage name of a one Stephen Black, a singer/ songwriter hailing from Trefriw (try pronouncing that after your second margarita) in North Wales. Another returning alumni, now signed to Moshi Moshi, who released the fabulous “Ships” LP last April with an almost immediate follow-up in November’s EP “Motorhome Songs”. pete@moshimoshimusic.com sweetbaboo.co.uk

HUW STEPHENS A broadcaster on BBC Radio 1, spinning the platters that matter on the wheels of plastic, both day and night, to millions of regular listeners. He was the youngest ever DJ on BBC Radio 1 at the age of 17, curates the yearly Sŵn Festival in Cardiff, Wales UK, and stages at festivals including Latitude, Green Man and the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury. His monthly nights in London have showcased new artists from across the world. He was made a Dr. in May 2011, speaks Welsh and was recently married (sorry ladies).

British Music Is GREAT - UK Trade & InvestmenT The UK continues to punch well above its weight with our proud track record in developing and promoting the international careers of composers and performers. Recently published figures confirmed that the UK is the second largest exporter of music, that UK artists accounted for 13.3% of global artist album sales and that trend is likely to continue with some GREAT new British talent being unveiled here at SXSW 2014.

T U E S DAY

This show last year introduced six new acts to SXSW audiences and two of these in particular, Bastille and The 1975 have since had no 1 albums and all six have made great strides forward with their careers since that show. UK Trade & Investment are proud to once again have BBC Radio One’s Huw Stephens as our co–host - Huw is always at the cutting edge of new music and it’s this knowledge that helps make this such a GREAT show. The UK media are strongly supportive of the music industry and provide a range of rich environments for performers and audiences; UK Trade & Investment and our industry partners are therefore delighted to be co-hosting the evening shows this week at the British Music Embassy with some of those media partners. www.ukti.gov.uk

MUSIC FROM WALES Wales’ music scene has never been in better health. We’ve got some incredible artists and a growing industry to back that up, from our fantastic festivals including Green Man, Festival No. 6 and Sŵn to our Welsh Music Prize now in its fourth year; this years’ winner was the wonderful Georgia Ruth with her debut album “Week Of Pines”. In October 2013, our capital city, Cardiff, hosted WOMEX, the World Music Expo, it was the largest international cultural event Wales has ever hosted and an outstanding success. During the course of this years’ SXSW you’ll see but a snippet of the breadth of music we have in our nation; from Until The Ribbon Breaks to Gruff Rhys to Save Your Breath to name a few. We are the “Land of Song”, don’t forget to experience it for yourself. BECCI SCOTCHER Project Manager, Welsh Music Foundation/Cerdd Cymru : Music Wales www.cerddcymru.com

Lawrence Rothman Not averse to the odd international guest, BME hosts the Cindy Sherman of alt-pop. Welcome to the bizarre world of Lawrence Rothman, a chameleon if ever there was one who’s persona changes from video to video, show to show. HOLY ESQUE Returning to SXSW on the back of new single “Silences”, epic Glasgow quartet Holy Esque make industrial, powerful, anthemic (yet still tender) indie-rock that is most definitely post-something. The band has been bubbling under for about 18 months now, with a couple of excellent releases and some even better concerts (that Glasto performance for a start). Is 2014 their year? sadowski@beyondthefrequency.com holyesque.tumblr.com

DRENGE T H U R S DAY

Sheffield based grunge band Drenge’s rise to fame had a bizarre helping hand after being name-checked in the resignation letter of a UK MP. More importantly though they’ve had solid touring activity alongside Deap Vally and Radkey, shows at Glasto and Latitude as well as a solid debut album on Infectious. murray@wildlife-entertainment.com drenge.co.uk

CASUAL SEX Glasgow’s very own Casual Sex are a vast melting pot of ideas, sometimes brewed in Green Door Studio. Theirs is a sound that is sometimes postpunk, sometimes proto, with strains of Kraut, redolent of XTC but then also occasionally with a blast of Magazine. wcspmanagement@hotmail.com facebook.com/casualsexmusic

BATTLE LINES Heading to SXSW for their US debut, Leeds natives Battle Lines make music that is haunting and fraught with inner conflict. They fuse intense, atmospheric guitars with surging rhythms and fragile lyrics that disarm the soul. WOMAN’S HOUR One of the finest up-and-coming purveyors of modernist pop, Woman’s Hour have seen due reverence throughout from the likes of Pitchfork, The Fader, Gorilla vs Bear and NME. Fortifying vocalist Fiona Burgess’ insatiable northern paeans with a glistening pulse of drum machines and bass / guitar flirting, theirs is a sound that gets richer in soul with every listen. Album due out on Secretly Canadian this year. ellie@jigsawmusicmgmt.com womanshour.co.uk

Royal Blood T H U R S DAY

Proving that the whole world hasn’t gone electrodeep house-mad and that there is still a place on the modern musical landscape for two young men in black t-shirts to make visceral, muscular, stripped back rock. Brighton’s Royal Blood have taken the UK by storm and were the only rock band on this year’s BBC Sound of 2014 list. Telling indeed, but they’ll certainly make it count. murray@wildlife-entertainment.com facebook.com/royalblooduk

LongfelLow If you like your music with an epic overview and a melancholic undercurrent then Longfellow could well be the New Favourite Band you’ve been waiting for. Five heartbreakers-in-waiting, they consist of Owen Lloyd (vocals), Tom Warhurst (drums), James Thomas (electric guitar), Isaac Shirman (bass) and Ali Hetherington (piano / synth). They lurk in South London and create a modest, authentic and soulful mixture of indie and pop.

BBC INTRODUCING Being in the right place at the right time is all important in pop music, which is why we’re delighted to be back at SXSW with BBC Introducing and BBC 6Music. The last time I was tasked with booking a showcase for SXSW was back in 2008 when we were lucky enough to secure the first SXSW performance from MGMT, which prompted a huge queue around the block, but also ensured that the venue was rammed for the first act, a female singer and her guitarist making their American live debut: a certain Florence & The Machine who performed a set so compelling and climactically anarchic that it’s now been watched a couple of hundred thousand times on YouTube. Within weeks she’d been invited on MGMT’s European tour and record labels were battling for her signature. This time around we’re hoping our timing will be equally good. In the past few years BBC introducing has grown to encompass a network of regional UK radio shows, highlighting local talent; and a series of stages at Britain’s biggest summer festivals.

T H U R S DAY

Its aim is to encourage and nurture unsigned or under the radar bands from across the country and give them opportunities to reach a bigger audience. Other BBC Introducing acts we’ve championed include Alt-J and Jake Bugg who handed us an early demo at a BBC Introducing Masterclass which resulted in his first radio play. For our SXSW bill we’ve chosen six bands who’ve enjoyed varying degrees of success to date – and present a selection of musical styles and ambitions, from dramatic soundtrack post rock to cutting edge electro-pop. We hope you like them. STEVE LAMACQ

PRIDES

Prides A Neon Gold-endorsed Glaswegian synth trio, Prides made their US debut in October after a summer of fervent online buzz off the back of their excellent debut single “Out Of The Blue” and a spanking remix of Sir Sly’s “Gold”. And all achieved before they’d even played their first London show at The Lexington with Sir Sly himself. allywmccrae@gmail.com joel@deckstar.com pridesband.com

Until The Ribbon Breaks Having just wrapped up their first North American tour supporting Lorde, UTRB, are a three piece band fronted by Cardiff native, Peter Lawrie Winfield. Redolent of how as youngsters you would “give a girl or a friend a mixtape to let them know what music you loved. It didn’t matter if one song was De La Soul and the next was R.E.M. It was about the feeling the entire collection conveyed.” eloise@atcmanagement.com untiltheribbonbreaks.com

Unknwn Chris Hanna is a young bass producer from Belfast whose talent has been recognised from all quarters of the industry. Together with Gemma Dunleavy, his vocalist, they are simply UNKNWN. The interplay between the voice of an angel and the dark dubby soundscapes they create is a thing of beauty that’s had love from the likes of Tiga, John Talabot and Boiler Room amongst others. lyndon@championsoundmusic.com facebook.com/UNKNWNmusic

GULP F R I DAY

Featuring one Guto Pryce of Super Furry Animals fame, GULP is a combination of fuzzed-up bass, dream-folk vocals, acoustic / electronic drums and synths. DINOSAUR PILE UP

MUSIC FROM YORKSHIRE Yorkshire, England’s largest county, is based in the North of the country and stretches from the picturesque East Coast over the rugged North Yorkshire Moors towards Manchester and the North West, incorporating the region’s biggest cities of Leeds and Sheffield. The music from Yorkshire is as varied as its landscape. Leeds is the largest city in the region with key music venues attracting global artists. It has given us Kaiser Chiefs, Pigeon Detectives and Corrine Bailey Ray to name but a few. Further south in the region, Sheffield upholds its musical reputation with household names like Arctic Monkeys, Def Leppard, Richard Hawley and Pulp. We are delighted that Jarvis Cocker will be at the conference this year reinforcing a Yorkshire presence at the festival for yet another year. Rather than simply take our word that music from Yorkshire is some of the best, come and listen for yourself! It can be heard at the British Music Embassy this year with performances from The Crookes, Drenge, Battle Lines and Dinosaur Pile Up.

HONEYBLOOD

Young fathers Making an immediate return to SXSW after an incendiary day show at The British Music Embassy in 2013, this CLASH endorsed Edinburgh rap trio are back in Austin to promote their long awaited (and rather good) debut album entitled “Dead released in February via the respected Anticon label. tim@slpnk.com young-fathers.com

We Were Promised Jetpacks F R I DAY

Hot on the heels of the Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbit, Jetpacks are another Scottish success story for FatCat, in particular in the USA. This is seemingly their fourth SXSW but their first visit in a performing capacity to the British Music Embassy, for what will surely be a most memorable Friday night showcase. nian@tambourinemanagement.com willymoon.com

HONEYBLOOD An effortlessly charming Glaswegian duo, Shona and Stina are none too distant musical cousins of Best Coast, Haim and Frankie Rose, but with some rather darker PJ Harvey-esque undertones. The FatCat signed band only began life in 2012 but have already toured with the likes of Sleigh Bells, Palma Violets and Deap Vally. littlewars@gmail.com yumhoneyblood.tumblr.com

Meursault F R I DAY

An amorphous conglomeration of Edinburgh-based musicians led by singer-songwriter Neil Pennycook that is sometimes categorised as folk-tronica, but then sometimes alt-rock. At all times however the band seem to possess that hard to quantify and uniquely melancholy quality that identifies them as Scottish. alex@rawkmusic.net meursaultmusic.com

Withered Hand Having graced The Embassy with his presence in 2011, Edinburgh troubadour Dan Wilson will make a long overdue return to the venue this year in support of his “New Gods” LP that will be released in the US via the Slumberland label early this year. wh666@witheredhand.com witheredhand.com

CREATIVE SCOTLAND 2014 is an historic year for Scotland. We welcome both the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup to our shores this summer, and in the autumn, we take to the polls to decide our very future as a country. The eyes of the world will be upon us; and this week at SXSW will show that the ears of the world will also be tilted in our direction. From the epic pop of Prides to the filthy multi-ethnic hip hop of Young Fathers, the dream pop of Honeyblood, the majestic indie-folk of Meursault and Withered Hand, the phenomenal passion and power of We Were Promised Jetpacks and Holy Esque, and the spiky scuzz of Casual Sex; Scotland is, as usual, at the forefront of ground-breaking and cutting edge new music. It’s an exciting year to be Scottish, and we hope to show you that music is a very big part of that excitement.

F R I DAY

AIM This year AIM is pleased to be partnering with Creative Scotland to showcase some of Scotland’s best home-grown talent. Scotland comes to Austin with a line-up at the British Music Embassy that includes Honeyblood, We Were Promised Jetpacks and Withered Hand from AIM member labels Fat Cat and Fortuna POP! Fat Cat started out as a record store in London in the late 90’s and is now a thriving IDM label; similarly Fortuna Pop! started out in the late 90’s specialising in indie pop and indie rock. Both of these influential labels have a track record of long-term commitment to artists and music, and we are proud to have them as AIM members. Scotland has always been one of the great power houses for new ideas and genres and the Creative Scotland/AIM showcase will be one of the highlights of a packed SXSW programme. MELT YOURSELF DOWN Melt Yourself Down is the sound of Cairo ’57, Cologne ’72, New York ’78, London 2014. Sounds you can taste and smell: fierce post-punk, discordant funk and wild sonic voodoo. contact@rootandbranchmusic.com meltyourselfdown.com

Kins S AT U R DAY

An indie band from Brighton by way of Australia, Kins’ profile quickly began to rise after relocating to English soil. BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music have been strong supporters as well as XFM and Amazing Radio, and now that has begun to translate to US radio love from the likes of KCRW, The Current and WXPN. mark@eastcitymanagement.com hellokins.com

The Crookes 2014 sees the Sheffield dreamers release their eagerly awaited 3rd LP, SOAPBOX. In four years, as well as constantly releasing new material, the band have become known for their critically acclaimed live shows, racking up an international gig-count that prompted Steve Lamacq to describe them as “one of the most hardworking and prolific bands of the underground.” pennyblackham@googlemail.com thecrookes.co.uk

Glass Animals “Unnervingly smooth jams” (as Pitchfork calls them) is a perfectly apt description of Oxford’s very own Glass Animals. The band create a sound based on a fusion of live instrumentation and electronics: downtempo slow-burners with hideously catchy pop-grooves. amymorgan@beggars.com glass-animals.tumblr.com

Rams Pocket Radio S AT U R DAY

Northern Ireland’s Peter McCauley, otherwise known as Rams Pocket Radio, is a multi-instrumentalist who’s played all over Europe with the likes of Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly, Snow Patrol and Darwin Deez as well as a run with Foy Vance across the States at the end of last year. His debut Béton was released in September 2013. mark@generatorni.com ramspocketradio.tumblr.com

TEMPLES

Drenge Sheffield based grunge band Drenge’s rise to fame had a bizarre helping hand after being name-checked in the resignation letter of a UK MP. More importantly though they’ve had solid touring activity alongside Deap Vally and Radkey, shows at Glasto and Latitude as well as a solid debut album on Infectious. murray@wildlife-entertainment.com drenge.co.uk

Fat White Family S AT U R DAY

“A bilious racket” according to The Guardian, and “The best gig I’ve seen in years” according to the NME, these South London rock and roll hooligans are ironically the darlings of the industry that they so openly disdain. Feral, witty, visceral and anarchic. stuart@bam.uk.com facebook.com/fatwhitefamily

Temples Things have gone rather quickly for Temples, who had a surge of interest before they were even a band, and were then suddenly on the same bill at Hyde Park as The Stones. This whirlwind first chapter culminated in the release of their debut album on Fat Possum. It’s a record destined to paint them as Britain’s premier retro-futurists, pulling in ‘60s psychedelia, Motown, glam and Krautrock viewed through a very modern kaleidoscope.

Bo Ningen Originally from Japan, but now based in London, Bo Ningen are beloved by both the fashion and art worlds as well as musicians and UK rock fans. This jaw-droppingly intense, incendiary band will be one of the most exhilarating experiences SXSW has to offer. rachael@stolenrecordings.co.uk boningen.info

San Fermin S AT U R DAY

Ivy league educated Ellis Ludwig-Leone is a composer / arranger by trade. His first undertaking under the moniker of San Fermin was written whilst in seclusion in a very cold place in Canada. It’s an eponymously monikered epic operation featuring 22 musicians that saw the light of day via Downtown to rave reviews this past September. thomas@votiv.is sanferminband.com

Splashh Splashh began life as the brainchild of Toto Vivian and Sasha Carlson in February 2012. The duo bonded over their mutual music tastes and began plotting their sun-drenched musical assault on the UK. Growing up between the South Pacific and the UK they left the beaches behind to record in a small bedroom in Hackney. The result was floating, fuzz laden, grunge-pop tunes with a punk twist. dave.cronen@trustmanagement.co.uk splashh.co.uk

SXSW is a central focus for the export of British acts both to the US and worldwide. The British Embassy showcase is a great opportunity to show off how good a band can be. It will be loud, it will be great, and it will be British Music at its best.
