Legendary radio presenter Steve Lamacq returns to SXSW with some of his favourites on Thursday including Woman’s Hour and Royal Blood playing the BBC Introducing showcase. Temples, The Wytches and the thrilling avant-jazz band Melt Yourself Down promise some nothing short of exhilarating performances across

the week. That of course is the tip of the iceberg, just a flavour of the eclecticism on offer this year from Britain at Latitude 30, at SXSW. About the British Film Commission The British Film Commission (BFC) is the national body in charge of attracting, encouraging and supporting the production of international feature films and high end television in the UK. With offices in London and Los Angeles the BFC provides free professional advice to help make productions in the UK a reality. The idea for the band came apparently when Charlie Allan was acting in the movie Gladiator (from which there’s a terrific anecdote about Ridley Scott borrowing his battering ram). AMERICAN INTERIOR UK Welsh musician Gruff Rhys documents the exploits of his 18th c. ancestor the explorer John Evans. Searching for a lost tribe of Welsh-speaking Native Americans, John Evans left Wales in 1792 with only a $1.75. Alone and horseless, he walked the wilderness of the Great Plains reappearing 7 years later as Don Juan Evans having changed the shape of American history. Fiction, fact, fantasy, myth and music documentary collide in American Interior as Rhys uncovers Evans’ legacy.

GOD HELP THE GIRL UK In God Help the Girl, first-time writer/director Stuart Murdoch of Belle & Sebastian, creates a comingof-age story that doubles as an indie-pop musical. He nurtured it for a decade into a fully formed film, set in Glasgow & populated by mods, rockers, and emo kids who sing and dance. With its mix of memorable songs and strong performances, God Help the Girl is sure to stick with you. Director: Stuart Murdoch. Principal Cast: Emily Browning, Olly Alexander, Hannah Murray.

SOUL BOYS OF THE WESTERN WORLD UK Soul Boys of the Western World is a voyage through the 80’s in the company of Spandau Ballet, one of the decade’s most iconic bands. This archive-only documentary film tells the story of a group of working-class London lads who created a global music Empire, but at a price none of them imagined. It is a film that speaks not only to fans of the band or those who harbour nostalgia for the 1980s, but to anyone who has ever experienced friendship and loss.

THAT B.E.A.T. USA/UK That B.E.A.T is one of six films shot in a variety of American cities, showcasing the new guard of young talent and the unique sounds of American music today. Showcasing diverse genres, including the strip clubs of Atlanta, the indie scene in Portland, genre mixing soul music from Detroit, underground alternative rap culture in New York City, electro music created in LA’s valley, and of course the sensation of New Orleans’ sissy bounce. Each of the individual films reveals cinematic portraits of distinct music sub cultures. Director: Abteen Bagheri

THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS UK The Possibilities Are Endless tells the incredible story of Edwyn Collins, a Scottish songwriter who suffered a stroke, an explosion in the brain so severe that it effectively deleted the contents of his mind. After a career as an internationally acclaimed lyricist, he lost all language and was only able to say two phrases: “The Possibilities are Endless” and “Grace Maxwell”. The literarily monikered and eclectic London quartet Wolf Alice have had much support in their short career so far from the likes of Huw Stephens and NME Radar. The band were crowned Britain’s most blogged artist by BBC 6 Music in 2013, and all before an album came into sight. HUW STEPHENS A broadcaster on BBC Radio 1, spinning the platters that matter on the wheels of plastic, both day and night, to millions of regular listeners. He was the youngest ever DJ on BBC Radio 1 at the age of 17, curates the yearly Sŵn Festival in Cardiff, Wales UK, and stages at festivals including Latitude, Green Man and the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury. His monthly nights in London have showcased new artists from across the world. He was made a Dr. in May 2011, speaks Welsh and was recently married (sorry ladies).

Nina Nesbitt Universal signed singer / songwriter Nina Nesbitt emerged into the public consciousness opening for Ed Sheeran at the tender age of 16. CODA AGENCY London based CODA Music Agency celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2012 and has grown rapidly in recent years representing over 500 artists and DJs from numerous genres. Earlier this year CODA teamed up with US based independent agency Paradigm in a joint venture which now gives them worldwide reach across the global touring market. The company’s Directors are Agents Alex Hardee, James Whitting, Marty Diamond, Rob Challice and Tom Schroeder supported by Greg Bestick, Dave Hallybone with Managing Director Claire Horseman. BBC INTRODUCING Being in the right place at the right time is all important in pop music, which is why we’re delighted to be back at SXSW with BBC Introducing and BBC 6Music. The last time I was tasked with booking a showcase for SXSW was back in 2008 when we were lucky enough to secure the first SXSW performance from MGMT, which prompted a huge queue around the block, but also ensured that the venue was rammed for the first act, a female singer and her guitarist making their American live debut: a certain Florence & The Machine who performed a set so compelling and climactically anarchic that it’s now been watched a couple of hundred thousand times on YouTube. Within weeks she’d been invited on MGMT’s European tour and record labels were battling for her signature. This time around we’re hoping our timing will be equally good. In the past few years BBC introducing has grown to encompass a network of regional UK radio shows, highlighting local talent; and a series of stages at Britain’s biggest summer festivals.

Its aim is to encourage and nurture unsigned or under the radar bands from across the country and give them opportunities to reach a bigger audience. Other BBC Introducing acts we’ve championed include Alt-J and Jake Bugg who handed us an early demo at a BBC Introducing Masterclass which resulted in his first radio play. MUSIC FROM YORKSHIRE Yorkshire, England’s largest county, is based in the North of the country and stretches from the picturesque East Coast over the rugged North Yorkshire Moors towards Manchester and the North West, incorporating the region’s biggest cities of Leeds and Sheffield. The music from Yorkshire is as varied as its landscape. Leeds is the largest city in the region with key music venues attracting global artists. It has given us Kaiser Chiefs, Pigeon Detectives and Corrine Bailey Ray to name but a few. Further south in the region, Sheffield upholds its musical reputation with household names like Arctic Monkeys, Def Leppard, Richard Hawley and Pulp. We are delighted that Jarvis Cocker will be at the conference this year reinforcing a Yorkshire presence at the festival for yet another year. UK POSTER ASSOCIATION The UK Poster Association (UKPA) once again returns to SXSW for the annual Flatstock Poster Convention, in support of a selection of some of the best gig posters artists currently working in the UK. The UKPA aims to help promote and showcase UK poster design with a focus on screen printed, physical works. Overleaf is a glimpse at the artists they are supporting in 2014.

Co-presented by the American Poster Institute (API) and SXSW, Flatstock 43 will display the works of the world’s top gig poster artists. The show runs March 13-15 and will showcase posters featuring a vast array of styles for an eclectic range of bands and musicians, by the very artists who created them.
