FOREWORD With much of the world reverting back to bygone days of nationalism, protectionism and trade disputes, the importance of exporting culture and encouraging experiences that bring us together hasn’t been this important for several generations. Music has the power to make a positive contribution to everyone’s lives, it has the power to heal, to make us laugh and cry, to make us feel but probably most importantly, it encourages us to do it with each other. At the very centre of this capability is British music. It’s been there since before any of us were born and with proper care, attention and well thought out initiatives it will stay that way. One of those initiatives is The British Music Embassy, a companion of SXSW since before I can remember. It’s why we at ATC jumped at the chance to work together this year, it represented an opportunity for us to celebrate music, British music and the role of BME. Alex and everyone at ATC are delighted to be presenting Georgia, Black Midi, Fontaines D.C., Ezra Collective, SOAK and Lucia on Tuesday night and are excited at the prospect of discovering further new British talent throughout the rest of the week. The British Music Embassy @ SXSW brings you more of the great talent that this island has to offer. Taking it to the heartland of Texas couldn’t be better. Brian Message

FATHERSON Kilmarnock’s favourite sons are no strangers to BME, playing a spectacular show for us in 2015. Father son’s third L.P. ‘Sum of All Your Parts’ arrived last year on Sony imprint Easy Life. The record sees the band return to the youthful innovation of their early days without losing the honest alt-rock sound they have become famous for.
michael@amodernway.com fathersonband.com
THE DESERT Formed in Bristol in 2016 The Desert are gaining rapid attention with their blistering, bitter-sweet, dark-pop world. Via Funnel Music, the release of their haunting debut single ‘Just Get High’ gained immediate attention and received praise and airplay on the major BBC stations and the Apple Music Chill List. Huge anticipation looms as they craft their debut LP.
david@funnelmusic.com thedesertofficial.co.uk
ALEX FRANCIS Having opened for the likes of Mel C, Sting, Alanis Morissette and The Stereophonics, Alex Francis has firmly established his pop credentials on the European live circuit. His track ‘Free’ has over 100k spins on Spotify and has had 2 x New Music Friday features on the platform in Germany.
davidsteele@hitonemusic.com alexfrancismusic.com
CURSE OF LONO Curse Of Lono’s cinematic blend of harmony-laden Americana and gothic alt-rock, owes as much to The Doors and The Velvet Underground as it does to more contemporary artists like The War On Drugs and Wilco. The band recently received the Bob Harris Emerging Artist Award at the UK Americana Awards.

SPORTS TEAM Injecting guitar music in 2019 with a bravado often left in the ‘90s, and possessing an arsenal of indie hits that could become classics, this six-piece want to inspire devotion and community. stuart@goodlifemusic.co facebook.com/sportsteamband
KING NUN Signed to Dirty Hit, a label with the Midas touch, with strong support from Jack Saunders on Radio 1 as well as DIY Magazine and with bangers like ‘Chinese Medicine’ in their set list, King Nun look set to break in 2019. glen@kyotomusic.co.uk kingnun.com
WHENYOUNG From Limerick via London, and imbued with the infectious charm of a classic indie gang, but laced with the multi-faceted fruits of a lifetime spent soaking up all the culture they can get their hands on, Whenyoung are a band to invest in. clare@planamanagement.com whenyoungband.com
16
MONDAY
ANTEROS Serving up neat slices of classic indie pop, this London quartet evoke the sound of No Doubt at their best, the poppy end of The Cure’s output, The Cardigans and of course quintessential British indie-pop band Blur. stefano@prolifica.co.uk anterosofficial.com
THE NINTH WAVE The band arrive at SXSW on the back of a short run with whenyoung and a great night with Chvrches at the SSE Hydro. Their sound is part post-punk, part goth and definitely boundary pushing and they are a band that thrives on the creative freedom that the Glasgow scene affords them. hamish@kingdommgmt.com theninthwave.online
WILLIE J HEALEY Oxford’s next breakthrough indie act in waiting, Mr. J Healey recently released a fantastic E.P. entitled ‘666 Kill’ for The Macabees boys’ Yala! imprint. Rather more introspective than his occasionally sparkling debut the year before, but he wears the Neil Young-esque melancholia well. tim@cannibal.ltd facebook.com/williejhealey

DIY Previous generations have had their influencer brand and, over the last fifteen years, DIY has become the music discovery media platform for a new generation of artists and fans who are still passionate about music. DIY is the UK’s largest free magazine dedicated to music and - more importantly - to supporting emerging artists as a music discovery brand. We have an international following of 1m+ a month (over 500,000 on social media alone), reinforced by a national presence led by our print magazine, which boasts distribution at over 250+ outlets, including Rough Trade NYC and Austin’s own Waterloo Records. DIY also offers an ongoing programme of regional live events - such as their recent Do It Yourself tour, which aims to offer advice and support to young people wishing to enter the music industry - and hosts stages at festivals like The Great Escape and Liverpool Sound City where we help to showcase great new acts. We are also increasingly active in promoting artists overseas, with our team attending events like ESNS, Mad Cool, Pohoda and Reeperbahn, as well as US festivals such as New Colossus and SXSW. diymag.com @diymagazine
DEPARTMENT FOR INTERNATIONAL TRADE DIT continues to support UK artists and companies through our Music trade missions and events around the world as well as MEGS (Music Export Growth Scheme) and ISF (International Showcase Fund), schemes that provide opportunities for artists’ International development through grants (up to £50K) that offer tour and showcasing support. It is wonderful to continue that support here at the British Music Embassy again at SXSW and working alongside our friends at DIY Magazine to open another great week of official night time SXSW showcases, bringing some great new acts from the UK. The evening will offer you your first opportunity in Austin to see Sports Team, King Nun, Anteros, The Ninth Wave, Willie J Healey and Ireland by way of London’s whenyoung up close and experience some of the magic that the British Music Embassy has become known for! Music is GREAT Britain & Northern Ireland

GEORGIA Bold? Tick. Infectious? Tick. Confrontational? Tick. A completely solo project, Georgia’s work is as mind-blowing as it is impressive. With the dizzying ‘Started Out’, her first release in over three years, playlisted by BBC Radio 1, the world awaits the Londoner’s next move. kellykiley@roughtraderecords.com georgiauk.com
BLACK MIDI After a mere 14 months of existence, and with only one single out, Black Midi have already generated a huge amount of hype. Live shows by the Londoners are a revered, highly sought after spectacle, while the band remains mysterious with very little social media output. Their updated take on mathy post-punk is mesmerising, unpredictable, complex, dark and raw. bertiegibbon@roughtrademanagement.com pj@roughtrademanagement.com calumsager@roughtrademanagement.com
FONTAINES D.C.
The most in demand act at this year’s Eurosonic conference, Fontaines D.C. will surely be the band to decimate the British Music Embassy at SXSW this year. Their blistering debut album will be released through the excellent Partisan label very soon. trevordietz@gmail.com fontainesband.com

EZRA COLLECTIVE At the vanguard in the resurgent UK Jazz scene, Ezra Collective marry the delicate technicalities of jazz with afro beat and hip-hop in an sound that’s unmistakably London. The band have sold out Ronnie Scott’s twice before a spectacular sold out show at Koko towards the end of 2018. management@ezracollective.com ezracollective.com
SOAK Mercury nominated skateboarder Bridie Monds-Watson played two absolutely spellbinding sets for us at BME back in 2015. Fast forward four years and she’s in to a second album campaign (‘Grim Town’ is out April 26) with Rough Trade and a long awaited to our house in Austin is finally a reality. jake@triplemanagement.com steve@triplemanagement.com soakmusic.co.uk
LUCIA With the sweetness of bubblegum-pop, the swagger of classic college rock, widescreen ambition and gritty grunge, Lucia have won the hearts of fans, critics and fellow artists with just a couple of releases and a few years of relentless touring. This is modern rock ’n’ roll driven by instinct alone. The perfect soundtrack for a teenage dream. luciamusicx@gmail.com facebook.com/luciamusicx

THE JOY FORMIDABLE Having recently supported The Foo Fighters, The Joy Formidable are currently touring their most recent album ‘AAARTH’ released last Autumn. Despite being four long players into their career they haven’t lost any of that youthful vigour that intersperses Top of The Pops main stage indie with occasional blast beats. peter@deckstar.com thejoyformidable.com
THYLA Brighton’s post punk experts Thyla have announced the release of their eagerly anticipated debut EP What’s On Your Mind out 1st February. Tipped for big things throughout the last twelve months, the rising four piece found themselves spotlighted amongst NME’s 100 Essential Acts for 2018 and Stereogum’s top bands of 2018. faulklawstudios@gmail.com thyla.co.uk
THE DUNTS Storming the Glaswegian scene and beyond, The Dunts are quickly becoming one of Scotland’s hottest exports. Formed in late 2016, the young quartet are demanding attention with their unique ‘council punk’-branded sound. United by an undeniable ferocity and tongue-in-cheek sensibilities, The Dunts are Rab Smith, David McFarlane, Colin McGachy and Kyle McGhee. jim@lost-management.com thedunts.co.uk

ORCHARDS Described as a “glittery gateway drug” and combining left-field experimentation with startlingly prescient pop sensibilities, Orchards eclectic influences range from Everything Everything and Bloc Party to Dua Lipa and The Mars Volta. SAINT PHNX Glaswegian rockers and sibling duo Saint PHNX bring stadium-ready choruses, persistent riffs, and a big helping of attitude to the stage with every show. Drawing influence from Imagine Dragons and Kasabian, they perform with as much energy as a full band. Their highly anticipated debut album will be released this April. marc@finegroupent.com / alistair@allegro-mgmt.com saintphnx.com

Up to £5,000 is available as a contribution to travel, visas, accommodation, and per diems. This year the International Showcase Fund has supported 41 UK artists to showcase at SXSW. Our most recent evaluation revealed that for every £1 of International Showcase Fund investment, artists generated an additional £8.90 in revenues. “PRS Foundation have helped a tremendous amount. I wouldn’t be able to afford to bring the band out here without it. It’s vital to be honest.” – LA Salami, 2017 grantee and performer The International Showcase Fund is a partnership between PRS Foundation, Department for International Trade, British Underground, Arts Council England, the Musicians’ Union, PPL, Creative Scotland, Wales Arts International, Arts Council Wales, Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Invest NI, in association with PledgeMusic. JEALOUS OF THE BIRDS
THE BRUMMIES Hailing from Birmingham AL, by way of Nashville TN, The Brummies have created one of last year’s most immersive and adventurous rock albums, ‘Eternal Reach’. It is a musician’s album, distinguished by inventive arrangements, lush melodies and straight-to-tape production. info@sandboxmgmt.com thebrummies.com
JEALOUS OF THE BIRDS Naomi Hamilton has been making waves in the indie music scene since her debut EP ‘Capricorn’, recorded while studying English and Creative Writing at Queen’s University, Belfast. 2016 saw a serendipitous SXSW performance that would ultimately lead to her signing with Canvasback/Atlantic (alt-J, The War on Drugs) with consistent support from BBC Radio 1, 6music and NPR. declan.legge@bigspacestudios.co.uk jealousofthebirdsmusic.com
LOUIS PRINCE The moniker of Nashville artist Jake McMullen. Influenced by 50’s and 60’s Jazz, French New Wave cinema and the stream-of-consciousness literary styles of Jack Kerouac and Joseph Conrad, his excellent album ‘Thirteen’ feels more like a product of the Beat Generation midcentury Greenwich Village than of Nashville Music City. amber@outofofficemgmt.com louisprince.com

THURSDAY
JOSHUA BURNSIDE Northern Irish experimental folk songwriter and producer Joshua Burnside is something of a regional anomaly. With a brooding, powerful sound echoing artists of places afar and times long gone, his enthralling craft defies local comparison in striving towards an aesthetic as much visual as it is sonic. Balanced with a diverse palette of sounds, Burnside deftly blends alt-folk and elements of the Irish folk song tradition with South American rhythms and Eastern European influences, whilst introducing synthetic and found-sounds, synths, loops and crunching beats to create a stormy world that shifts and swirls perspective like a lingering lucid dream. lyndon@chamionsoundmusic.com joshuaburnside.com
ROE Winner of ‘Best Emerging Artist’ at the 2018 Northern Ireland Music Prize, ROE is 19-year-old multi-instrumentalist from Derry, Roisin Donald. Laying down her unique brand of self-styled “Grumpy Electro-Pop”, she is currently about to head on tour with Snow Patrol, opening for the band on their UK arena tour. music@primitivesound.co.uk roeofficial.com

NOVELIST
THE BLINDERS Raucous and politically aware, The Blinders are the loudest thing to come out of Doncaster since Jeremy Clarkson. Debut album ‘Columbia’ blew socks off in 2018, and after years of relentless touring, Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens are counted among the fans of this enigmatic, raw, and honest three-piece. mark.payne@theredcase.com theblindersofficial.com
NOVELIST Nominated for the 2018 Mercury Prize for debut album ‘Novelist Guy’, Novelist is completely self-written, self-produced and selfreleased. In fact, there’s very little conventional about the South Londoner’s approach, evident both in the lack of features on the record and his mesmerising live performance. manager4novelist@gmail.com facebook.com/novelistgrime
FLOHIO With genre-defying production and intelligent, fast-paced lyricism, Flohio’s music is both powerful and poetic. 2018’s ‘Wild Yout’ EP was a huge statement of intent; gritty, rampant and assertive – you sense Flohio’s role as a vital voice in the UK rap scene has only just begun. giulia.ferrazzi@gmail.com facebook.com/flohio

THE PEARL HARTS Unleashing debut album ‘Glitter And Spit’ on the world in early 2018, The Pearl Harts are an uncompromising and forthright duo based out of South East London. With support from BBC Music Introducing and 6Music, their stomping drums and heavy blues driven guitars are best taken in live. gary.walker@monotoneinc.com thepearlharts.com
PENELOPE ISLES Fronted by brother/sister duo Jack and Lily Wolter, Penelope Isles create hypnotic, dreamy pop that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. BBC 6 RADIO MUSIC The home to music curators including Lauren Laverne, Mary Anne Hobbs, Gilles Peterson, Cerys Matthews, Marc Riley, Iggy Pop and the legendary Steve Lamacq, BBC Radio 6 Music is the place for music of an alternative spirit on the BBC. It is currently the UK’s biggest digital-only station with over 2.3 million listeners and home to the annual 6 Music Festival. The station has been pivotal in its support of many artists early on in their careers, including Courtney Barnett, Sons of Kemet, Kojey Radical, Slaves, White Denim and Field Music, plus Idles who performed a rip-roaring set at SXSW last year for 6 Music. Whether it is iconic alternative music from the past or ground-breaking music from today, there is a place for it on 6 Music.

ELDER ISLAND There is magic in Elder Island’s music and perhaps a little witchcraft. Trying to pin the Bristol trio’s sound down is pointless because the usual pop rules don’t apply. Textures matter as much as melodies. Genres bend and blend. Electronics rub shoulders with odd instruments. Katy Sargent sings as though casting a spell. ross@wholeent.com elderisland.com
HUSKY LOOPS Signed to Danger Mouse’s 30th Century imprint, and featured on FIFA’19, Husky Loops make smart outsider pop. Their brand of intelligent indie is of the kind that you’d expect to open for David Byrne, which they did in Prague last summer. clare@planamanagement.com huskyloops.com
WESTERMAN DIY tipped Will Westerman is a left field songwriter who challenges expectations of what a solo male singer songwriter is supposed to be in 2019. He has an intelligent sound, making music that weaves soft, warm electronics into folk songs about self-acceptance. chris@blueflowersmusic.com westermanofficial.com

FRIDAY
MINKE Sitting at a very modern meeting point between indie and R&B, Minke first came to attention with the Paul Garred (Kooks) co-written song ‘Gold Angel’. Fast forward to 2019 and she’s just dropped the triumphant ’Too Late’ which points to a very bright future indeed. seth@thisfiction.com thisisminke.com
HAELOS HÆLOS are Dom Goldsmith, Arthur Delaney, Lotti Benardout and Daniel Vildosola out of London. In 2016 their debut record, Full Circle, peaked at #1 and #2 in the UK electronic charts and saw them play shows across the globe. 2019 brings new music with their sophomore album, ‘Any Random Kindness’ (out May 10th). Catch them on the road this year. jessica.lord@redlightmanagement.com haelos.com

HER’S Prepare to be transported to a happier time; the sun bright in the sky and a drink in hand – that’s where Liverpool’s Her’s are going to take you. Last year’s debut album ‘Invitation To Her’s’ was at the dreamy end of dream pop and established the duo as kings of feel-good. mick@heistorhit.com, martin@heistorhit.com thatbandofhers.com
THE COMET IS COMING The self-proclaimed soundtrack to an imagined apocalypse, King Shabaka, Danalogue and Betamax Ohm make up London’s The Comet Is Coming, and their infectious blend of jazz and psychedelia earned them a Mercury Prize nomination in 2016 for debut album ‘Channel The Spirits’. Hold on tight and be prepared to be transported to another galaxy. kerstan@funkyflymusic.com thecometiscoming.co.uk
BAD SOUNDS Brothers Ewan and Callum Merrett front this funk-laden, gamechangingly groovy and devilishly danceable five-piece from Bath. A euphoric mishmash of genres and coated in delightful harmonies, debut album ‘Get Better’ was released in the summer of 2018 and was lauded by critics and fans alike. hide@riverman.co.uk realbadsounds.com

FRIDAY
DYLAN CARTLIDGE Take a slice of hip-hop, add a sizeable dollop of indie and finally sprinkle some funk and even then you’re just beginning to get to the bottom of Dylan Cartlidge’s sound. Single ‘Wishing Well’ was named Introducing’s Track of the Week on Radio 1 in December 2018, holding the Middlesbrough maestro in good stead for things to come. david@halftimemusic.co.uk facebook.com/dylancartlidgemusic
ANNABEL ALLUM Annabel Allum’s combination of uncompromising vocals and fuzzy indie hooks with a generous dose of on-stage charisma and a relentless touring schedule has led to a truly pulsating live experience. A BBC Music Introducing session at Maida Vale already under her belt, Allum’s music is best consumed live. ach@killing-moon.com aannabel.com
FERRIS & SYLVESTER
A clever combination of blues, folk and rock & roll paired with the dreamiest of harmonies will leave you utterly transfixed by Ferris & Sylvester. Already turning heads with millions of streams and support from BBC Radio 2, 6Music, and BBC Music Introducing in Devon and Cornwall, 2019 is theirs for the taking. connor@airmtm.com ferrisandsylvester.com

FATHERSON Their second show of the week at BME and what a way to round out our daytime programming for SXSW 2019. Classic Scottish indie rock in all the right ways, Fatherson bring the sound of Glasgow’s Barrowlands to Austin on a Saturday afternoon in March. michael@amodernway.com fathersonband.com
THE SNUTS Already a cult sensation in their Scottish homeland, THE SNUTS have built their burgeoning reputation on the road, with shows rapidly growing in scale and style since the beginning of 2018. Their formula is refreshing, deeply sincere and most importantly, ready to take on the world. They’re an act whose songs and manifesto have all the all-encompassing credentials to follow in the footsteps of Oasis and Arctic Monkeys as the next great, British guitar band. callum@touchdownmanagement.com facebook.com/thesnutsofficial
ISLAND This Frenchkiss signed London alt-rock quartet make darkly twisting music topped with shimmering melodies. They have come up the right way with their live history charting a trajectory from selling out tiny 150 cap venues to doing 800 tickets at the Scala. ali@beatnikcreative.com islandislandisland.com

PENELOPE ISLES Like breaking open a rock to discover a crystal inside. Shimmering, intimate and beautifully destructive. Siblings Jack and Lily make music that reveals a curiosity and sensitivity to the world around them. The four-piece from Brighton have a sound that unfolds both dramatically and softly. Their debut LP ‘Until The Tide Creeps In’ is out this month on Bella Union Records. For the lovers of early Arcade Fire, Grandaddy and Mogwai. bellaunionmgmt@gmail.com penelopeisles.com

THE AMAZONS Hailing from Reading, and with a blistering top 10 debut album to their name, The Amazons mean business. BBC Music Introducing alumni, the four-piece were named on the BBC Sound Of 2017 poll, and also have a Maida Vale session and performances at some of the UK’s biggest festivals under their belts, including Glastonbury and Reading & Leeds. alex@gravitymgmt.com theamazons.co.uk
EASY LIFE Proud to be genreless, Leicester’s Easy Life take influences from jazz, grime, indie, punk and much more. The irresistible ‘Nightmares’ was the BBC Music Introducing Track of The Week on BBC Radio 1 in October 2018, and with their alluring hooks and laid-back charm, there’s little doubt Easy Life can bop all the way to the top. ollie.slaney@icloud.com easylifemusic.com
CELESTE With fans including Radio 1’s Annie Mac and Phil Taggart, Celeste first caught the attention of the music world with 2016’s stunning ‘Daydreaming’. ‘The Milk & Honey’ EP shortly followed, and with her trademark soaring, soulful vocals over crashing drums, Celeste’s music oozes both charm and maturity. de@atlas-artists.com facebook.com/celestewaite

BOY AZOOGA With influences from across the musical spectrum, there is no risk of two Boy Azooga tracks sounding alike. Fronted by the multitalented Davey Newington, the Welsh groups rise began with the gloriously groovy and maraca-laden ‘Face Behind Her Cigarette’, with debut album ‘1, 2, Kung Fu’! released to acclaim last year. boyazooga@gmail.com boyazooga.co.uk
APRE After meeting at Ealing Chess Club a few years ago (yes, really), Apre released their debut EP ‘Drum Machines Killed Music’ last year. This is not a 45RPM single. This is a painting. A massive painting. This is British SuperSize artist Morgan Howell. Yes, his actual job is to paint giant versions of seven inch singles- but he will only depict any song once. His art is owned by Blur, Johnny Marr, The Kinks, Neil Diamond, Ian Brown and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. He is coming to SXSW. See his work exhibited at the BME. These works have to be seen to be believed. A visual soundtrack of our lives.
