FOREWORD There are two things that have kept Fleetwood Mac, one of the best-selling bands of all time, together all these years: a unique musical chemistry and the perseverance of it’s longest standing member, Mick Fleetwood. With a family that strongly supported the Arts, Fleetwood moved to London in 1963 attracted to the opportunities presented by rich and thriving music and fashion cultures. I was obsessed with London in the Sixties. Swingin’ London was a vibrant hub of great musical talents and venues for live blues and jazz. I would spend hours teaching myself to play drums in my sister’s garage in her flat in Notting Hill. Starting out playing for various short-lived but promising bands including The Cheynes (touring with Brian Jones and the Rolling Stones), Bo Street Runners, Peter B’s Looners and Shotgun Express (featuring Rod Stewart), I eventually attained a highly sought-after position as a drummer in John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. Here under John Mayall’s mentorship and guidance, I met Fleetwood Mac co-founders Peter Green and John McVie.
FOREWORD
A key moment in the British Blues boom can be traced back to the Windsor Jazz and Blues Festival in 1967. It was Fleetwood Mac’s first official gig and a pivotal point for us and many other British bands. Held at a racecourse, with a temperamental PA and complaints from the neighbours – it was a far cry from SXSW! But joining us on that billing were bands that would go on to great things, including Cream, The Small Faces, Marmalade, Pink Floyd, Jeff Beck and The Bluesbreakers. It was a significant artistic moment, and testament to the power of festivals to launch careers and to define the new sound of a generation. Although we enjoyed chart success quickly in the UK, it still took Fleetwood Mac a number of years to break into America. Music travels a lot faster in the Internet age. But musicians will always seek inspiration from the past, even while creating something radically new. Thanks to it’s grounding in the Jazz and Blues rhythms, Fleetwood Mac has been uniquely capable of allowing a freedom of creative expression to a variety of lead players through the years. Blues roots can still be heard on many records today and I am proud to have played a part in it’s evolution and bringing it to a wider audience, and I look forward to hearing where it’s heading now through the new British artists appearing at SXSW 2017. Now 50 years after our debut performance, my new limited edition autobiography, Love That Burns–A Chronicle of Fleetwood Mac, Volume One: 1967-1975 explores the rocky beginnings, twist and turns of a band that has come to define me, and I am honoured to share my experiences navigating the music industry at SXSW.

MUNCIE GIRLS In the last few years Exeter’s Muncie Girls have clocked up more road miles than your average taxi driver, touring incessantly alongside support slots with Taking Back Sunday, Beach Slang and more. It shows, and the punk trio have nurtured an exuberant, exciting and downright excellent live show along the way. Miss at your peril. sarah@itsforfriends.com / andrew@itsforfriends.com munciegirls.co.uk
BLAENAVON
MONDAY
Having initially caught industry attention as 17-yearolds with more than a handful of promise, Hampshire trio Blaenavon have spent the last three years steadily working towards this year’s debut LP ‘That’s Your Lot’ – a nuanced and visceral album that comes good on their early excitement and then some. No exaggeration needed, Blaenavon are one of this year’s most vital indie breakthroughs. mike@transgressiverecords.com blaenavon.com
JAMIE ISAAC South Londoner Jamie Isaac’s been on the rise for a little while now. But with the arrival of last year’s debut LP ‘Couch Baby’, the singer’s blissed out, ambient soul has become a fully-fledged must listen. Taking the innercity tales of King Krule and the like and adding some seriously smooth grooves, his is the voice of the real young London. jh@marathonartists.com facebook.com/jamieisaacofficial

DOE Scholars of the Biffy Clyro school of anthemic riffs, London’s Doe play the kind of instantly attentiongrabbing three-minute monsters that’ll assault your senses and leave them shaking in their boots. 2016 debut ‘Some Things Last Longer Than You’ is like Blood Red Shoes hyped up on power chords - aka massive. hellowearedoe@gmail.com doetheband.co.uk
Like the younger siblings of Los Campesinos!’ deadpan indie-isms and Dananananakroyd’s perky punk, Essex quartet SuperGlu deal in boy/girl vocals, hooks born to bounce to and lyrics about speaking Latvian. Classing themselves as ‘bubblegum rock’, the likes of ‘Dreams’ and ‘Diving Bell’ vary in their levels of pogo-ability but never lose sight of the melody. john@disasterartistmanagement.co.uk facebook.com/supergluband
FORTH WANDERERS If Courtney Barnett fronted a band full of the slacker charm of Best Coast and the melodic, hazy nouse of Speedy Ortiz or Palehound, you might end up somewhere near the superlative charms of New Jersey quintet Forth Wanderers and their recent EP ‘Slop’. Yes, they really are that good. max@marathonartists.com forthwanderers.life

SLAVES Isaac and Laurie first uploaded their music as Slaves to BBC Introducing in Kent back in 2012. The political-punk band’s name is metaphor for living in a capitalist world, and they went on to play the BBC Introducing stage at Reading and Leeds in 2013, before releasing their debut album ‘Are You Satisfied?’ in 2015. matt@seven7.management youareallslaves.com

TUESDAY
Hailing from South London, Dave’s authentic and honest lyrics about brotherhood make him a prominent new voice in the UK new wave hip hop scene. He is also a grade 7 pianist, which he showed off during a powerful performance at BBC Radio 1’s Future Festival in January. jack@tropicssound.com / ben@tropicssound.com facebook.com/santandave1
SAM GELLAITRY Sam is a Scottish producer who started making music when he was 12. He left school at 16 to focus solely on music and his rich, futuristic beats have gained him new fans across Europe and the US. He released his second ‘Escapism’ EP on XL Recordings last year. mr.random.sam@gmail.com samgellaitry.co.uk

LET’S EAT GRANDMA 17-year-old childhood friends Rosa and Jenny only uploaded music under their Let’s Eat Grandma guise last year. Since then, the duo have released their debut album ‘I, Gemini’, played a string of flagship gigs including BBC Two’s Later… with Jools Holland and are on a mission to the top with their eerie, experimental pop project. rachel@transgressiverecords.com letseatgrandma.co.uk
Sweat are a five-piece band from London. Their 80s-influenced electro pop style is infectious, with Huw Stephens being a huge fan. They describe their music as “sexy dance music for clubs” and they’re certainly turning heads as one the UK’s most vibrant new artists. simon@0171music.com marcus@whiteheatmayfair.com facebook.com/sweatnet
DREAM WIFE Dream Wife began as a performance piece when members Alice, Bella and Rakel came together at art school in Brighton. Named after the 1953 film starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, the project has now come to life as the hard-hitting 90s-inspired girlband set on making “poolside pop with a bite”. raygunmusic@mac.com dreamwife.co

FLAMINGODS
FLAMINGODS An experimental UK / Bahrain based quintet with quite possibly the oddest assortment of instruments you will see at SXSW 2017. That the band formed out of an 8 hour chalet-jam at ATP gives you an idea, but if you still need convincing, perhaps endorsements from Beats 1, Tom Ravenscroft at 6 Music and Guardian New Band Of The Week will persuade you to see this show. steve@liquidmanagement.net flamingods.com

WEDNESDAY
Trio singer-producer Sebastian “Bassi” Fox, guitarist Stevie McMinn and drummer Alex Mitchell return with their debut album in May 2017. Their growing reputation both live and on record is built around their splicing of electronic beats and acoustic elements with hymnal vocals, full of glorious swells and fades, culminating in the enormity of Sigur Ros-styled soaring crescendos. charlie@crcmusic.co.uk facebook.com/mtwolfofficial
LET’S EAT GRANDMA Phenomenal outsider pop from two Norwich teenagers who literally don’t care about the verse-guitar-chorus script. You will not see another band like this at SXSW 2017. rachel@transgressiverecords.com letseatgrandma.co.uk
30
CHARLIE CUNNINGHAM A London via Seville via Oxford guitar maestro, Charlie has just released his flamenco tinged debut album ‘Lines’ with Swedish label Dumont Dumont. Whilst he’s supported the likes of King Creosote, Rodriguez and Beirut, he now stands squarely on his own two feet arriving at SXSW on the back of his biggest London show to date at Union Chapel and after Austin will head to Germany to play the Berlin Philharmonie Kammersal. pc@ufa.no / al@mutemanagement.com charliecunninghamlive.com
In 2013 Welsh musician Meilyr Jones took a trip to Rome after his band Race Horses broke up and his relationship ended. This led him to pursue a solo career and create Elvis Presley and Aretha-Franklin inspired indie-pop. He was then picked up by BBC Introducing and 6 Music and the journey continued. pete@moshimoshimusic.com meilyrjones.com

It’s been six years since 19 year-old musician Ethan Barnett picked up his first guitar from a car-boot sale. 21-year old Jacob Collier’s unique blend of jazz, folk, trip-hop and classical set him apart as a talented genrebending new artist. JEALOUS OF THE BIRDS Jealous of the Birds is a solo project from Northern Ireland’s Naomi Hamilton. Her indie-folk sound caught the attention of BBC Radio Ulster where she played a BBC Introducing session which landed her a set at Radio 1’s Big Weekend last year. BBC MUSIC INTRODUCING Now in its 10th year, BBC Music Introducing will be descending upon Austin once again to deliver a showcase packed full of acts we believe are destined for great things. BBC Radio 1, Radio 2 and 6 Music will be broadcasting from the festival throughout the week and thanks to BBC Music, we’re putting brand new unsigned and under the radar musicians at the forefront of what we do. Alongside putting on bands at UK festivals such as Glastonbury, Reading + Leeds Festivals and Latitude, in partnership with PRS for Music Foundation, we are committed to providing more opportunities for new British acts internationally.
BBC INTRODUCING
“SXSW has a special place in both mine and BBC Music Introducing’s heart as it’s where we first showcased Florence + the Machine back in 2008 and more recently Royal Blood, who debuted here in 2014, and the band Blossoms who joined us in 2015 and then became one of the most tipped bands in Britain. It’s a terrific, atmospheric and intimate venue, the British Music Embassy, and we can’t wait to show you our new favourite acts for 2017.” Steve Lamacq – BBC Radio 6 Music “SXSW is a perfect chance for artists from the UK to shine and play to new audiences. We have an incredible track record of brilliant acts playing here from Florence + the Machine to Royal Blood to Jack Garratt. BBC Music Introducing and all the shows involved are pleased to bring more excellent bands and artists to play here in 2017.” Huw Stephens – BBC Radio 1
