FOREWORD
The British Music Embassy (BME) is a brilliant example of how the music industry and government have come together to promote the very best of UK music to the World. Thanks to all the Partners that have come together to make this happen in 2023.
The UK presence and the BME has become an institution here at SXSW and has been running for 15 years. In that time we’ve helped to introduce artists such as Amy Winehouse, Sam Fender, Idles and many others onto the global stage. I was struck that after last years BME was done and dusted, no fewer than four of the acts that were on the stage here in Austin were nominated for Mercury awards, and Wet Leg went on to win breakthrough artist and best group awards at the BRIT’s last month, alongside two Grammy’s!
And it’s not just the artists on the stage that should take a bow, we’re also showcasing our world class production expertise with partners such as Production Park, Marshall and Bowers & Wilkins.
As a life-long supporter and music fan myself, I’m personally really looking forward to seeing how the BME partnership can continue to help take amazing bands and artists from small Indie venues in the UK (like the Portland Arms, my local venue in Cambridge) onto even greater success in the global music market.

NOISY
Noisy is what Noisy does: a three-piece hybrid of hooks, beats and escapism. Formed on the south coast of England in Worthing, they take the spin-the-bottle sensibility of the playlist generation and make something new entirely: the sound of hip hop, D&B, and the eternal swagger of the Happy Mondays rolled into one intoxicating whole.
matt.ash@rawpowermanagement.com

DEAD PONY
The sonic aggression of Dead Pony is matched by a no-nonsense attitude and infectious battle-ready choruses. The band released their debut EP ‘War Boys’ in 2022 through LAB Records. The last twelve months have been a whirlwind for the young band, from selling out their first headline show instantly to playing world-renowned TRNSMT Festival to touring with The Maine, Twin Atlantic and The Mysterines.
aimmi@machinamgmt.com deadponyband.com
KID BOOKIE
Starting out playing guitar in local South London bands, Kid Bookie later turned his interest to hip hop. Now with four albums to his name, Bookie boasts a nomination for the first ever MOBO’s ‘Best Alternative Act’ award and has collaborated with artists such as Corey Taylor and Dot Rotten.

PANIC SHACK
Romi, Sarah, Emily, and Meg were fed up with music being a ‘members-only club’. Armed with brash, witty lyrics and killer hooks, Panic Shack crashed through the UK music scene with a tidal wave of earcrunching noise. Immediately building up a reputation for their raw, unapologetic live shows and off-kilter songs, they prove that DIY does it better.

MONDAY 17
MARSHALL
We are hugely excited to be returning to SXSW this year, this time as official sponsors of the Monday night at the British Music Embassy. SXSW, along with the British Music Embassy, allow artists fantastic opportunities to showcase their unique talents to a brand new audience.
Performing at the Marshall Showcase on Monday evening will be the incredibly unique and talented Kid Bookie, the unpredictable and exciting Gen and the Degenerates, Glasgow’s finest Dead Pony, Liverpool sextet Red Rum Club, Welsh punks Panic Shack
and South Coast Genre Mixologists Noisy. Expect nothing short of an outstanding evening of brilliant new music.
Supporting new talent is fundamental to what we do. Whether supporting endorsers with amplifiers and drum kits, signing artists to our label and booking agency or welcoming musicians into our recording studio, artists come first. Working with SXSW and the BME couldn’t be a better fit given their unwavering support for new music, which goes back to the very heart of the Marshall ethos.

BALMING TIGER
Balming Tiger describes themselves as a ‘multinational alternative K-pop band’ with a desire to create an impact globally and represent the younger generation of today’s society. Aiming to further popularize Asian culture throughout the world, each artist in this ensemble expresses a different artistic identity and energy, as well as a wide range of versatility.

SANS SOUCIS
Sans Soucis makes music that invigorates the soul, combining elements of Congolese rumba, classic Italian songwriting, electronic R&B and alt-pop sounds. Born out of a desire to reconnect with the uninhibited joyfulness and authenticity of childhood that all of us lose as we grow older, their music is a radical act of reclamation.

THE GOA EXPRESS
Teenagehood and a genuine love for alternative music united The Goa Express, from the industrial towns of Burnley and Todmorden and adopted by Manchester. Brothers James Douglas Clarke (Guitar + Vocals) and Joe Clarke (Keys), along with Joey Stein (Lead Guitar), Naham Muzaffar (Bass) and Sam Launder (Drums) all contribute to a fuzzy wall of diverse sound, becoming harder to pin down their constantly evolving, psych-umbrella’d rock and roll.

THE GOLDEN DREGS
Founded in Falmouth, Cornwall in 2013, The Golden Dregs is the project of Benjamin Woods, a songwriter and producer currently residing in South London. In among the personal reflections on the loss of innocence and inferiority, Woods spins subtly interweaving narratives about survival, desperate acts of violence, loss and the limitations of community in the face of rapacious gentrification.

ATC LIVE
We’re an independent artist booking agency dedicated to providing the highest level of service possible for our artists. We represent more than 400 artists and we have a team of 30 staff across offices in London, Glasgow and Paris.
The agency represents a wide range of acts including PJ Harvey, The Lumineers, Squid, Snail Mail, Amyl & The Sniffers, Black Pumas, Jamie Webster, Fontaines DC, Mac De Marco, Murkage Dave, Big Thief, Kiefer Sutherland, Metronomy Surfbort, Nick Cave and Black Country, New Road.
It was so good to finally be back at BME last year after a few years away and to showcase 30+ clients from the ATC Live roster across Austin’s legendary club stages. SXSW ‘23 will surely build on the steps the live music business took last year, whilst we got back to something akin to normality, and we have another fantastic cohort of showcasing artists that we can’t wait to introduce to the world.

LIME GARDEN
Lime Garden are a four-piece band from Brighton (UK) jumping over genre boundaries to create a sound that is uplifting yet somehow laid-back. They achieve this neat trick by harnessing catchy melodies and earworm hooks into a nonchalant net of lo-fi sounds, which is then sprinkled with a dry-wit to bring their world to life.

PRIMA QUEEN
Prima Queen’s love story is one which cinema could only aspire to. The magic of their ethereal, guitar-driven sound is built not on romantic love, but something immeasurably stronger: female friendship. “It’s the best feeling in the whole world to see someone really belting out our lyrics at a show.” Resonance, above all else, is what Kristin and Louise are striving for.

JAZ KARIS
South London songstress Jaz Karis grew up in church choirs, and began performing from the age of seven when she started playing the piano and singing for anyone who would listen. Occupying a space between R&B, soul, amapiano and afropop, the singer is a fiercely independent artist.

Matured, reinvented and refusing to be pigeonholed, girli’s new era is an anthem for the misfits and misunderstood. “I contain multitudes. I’m so many things at once and that’s the energy I want people to feel when they listen to my music.”

FOLLY GROUP
On stage, Folly Group is the sum of drums, percussion, bass, guitar, vocals and a sampler. Elsewhere, Folly Group is an amorphous creative entity, encompassing a group of friends whose practice spans various disciplines. Folly Group is a way to mess with form, structure and signifiers. Folly Group attempts to interrogate the job of the band; it’s an allergic reaction to stasis and complacency.

Probably the best skateboarder appearing at BME this year, Bridie Monds-Watson also knocks out a fine tune or two too. AUSTIN’S BEST HOMETOWN VENUES
by Consequence
As the largest independent pop culture publication on the Internet, Consequence knows the importance of championing the communities that help the music scene thrive. So while there are plenty of places to catch a show during SXSW, we recommend hitting up these Austin landmarks to get a true taste of the city’s hometown greatness.
1. The Courtyard - We’re not just saying this because BME’s showcase is here, we swear. Formerly Cedar Street Courtyard, this revitalized openair venue with sky box viewing feels like a secret escape right off West 4th.
2. Cheer Up Charlies - Always fun and unique, this cherished space with tiny indoor and wide open outdoor stages is an Austin institution known for its funky vibes and creative vegan cocktails.
3. Empire Control Room and Garage - Once an auto shop and now an outdoor-indoor venue separated by a chill patio space, Empire celebrates its 10th anniversary as a year-round club this year.
4. Historic Scoot Inn - “Historic” is in the name for a reason. One of the oldest continuously-operating bars in town, the backyard venue and deck make it a quintessential Austin concert experience.
5. Mohawk - With an intimate indoor space and outdoor venue with tiered vantage points, there’s ample reason Mohawk is one of the city’s most acclaimed and beloved music venues.
Enjoy these choice local haunts this SX, and check out Consequence as we continue to celebrate hometown favorites all year round.

MMF ACCELERATOR
To paraphrase Jay-Z: not all artists are business people, but all artists operate as businesses.
And never more so than today. Which is why the roles and responsibilities of the music manager have never been so important - and why there’s such an increased interest in what a modern day manager actually does.
Representing more than 1,350 UK managers, the MMF (Music Managers Forum) is committed to helping our community succeed and ensuring the talent they represent can flourish.
Our work encompasses everything from groundbreaking funding programmes (Accelerator), industry-leading research (Dissecting The Digital Dollar), strategic partnerships (our growing range of business Associates), events including a long-running Awards show (the Artist & Manager Awards), training, and campaigning for a fairer and more transparent industry.
In 2022, we even published a new book: The Essentials Of Music Management.
Although UK-based, we retain strong links with music management organisations throughout the
world, and especially in North America. Recent keynote speakers at our AGM have included Ty Stiklorious (John Legend, Charlie Puth) and Post Malone’s manager, Dre London.
In Austin we will be looking to expand those connections with our annual SXSW International Music Managers Brunch, as well as hosting a panel session that will drill into the urgent need to overhaul how songwriters are paid when their works are streamed. Taking place on Tuesday (14th March), this will feature MMF Chief Executive, Annabella Coldrick, AMRA’s Tomas Ericsson, former Hipgnosis CCO Amy Thomson and CMU’s Chris Cooke.

Incorporating the imprint of krautrock, post-punk, and psychedelia, Belfast’s Junk Drawer’s intuitively loose and idiosyncratic brand of indie rock mines anthems from their crate-digging tendencies. Featuring four multi-instrumentalists & vocalists fluid in their roles, they’re driven by the harmony and discordance that comes from a sibling creative rivalry at the helm and remain one of the most dynamic, exciting bands you’ll catch live.

MIRAA MAY
The Algerian-born, Tottenham-based singer takes inspiration from the north London streets where she grew up, and from the friendships and the experiences of a life lived. Celebrated for her candour, Miraa released her debut EP ‘The Beginning’ in 2014. It, alongside a handful of raw and soulful live performances, attracted the ears of legendary producer Salaam Remi who produced her second, cult favourite EP, N15.

YAZMIN LACEY
East London Soul artist Yazmin Lacey entrances listeners with her dreamy, uplifting voice. After a chance encounter got her on Gilles Peterson’s Future Bubblers back in 2018, Lacey went from writing music in her bedroom to releasing a trilogy of EPs, selling out shows in just 2 hours, and clocking up over 4.2 millions Spotify streams with standout track ‘Something My Heart Trusts.’

SIPHO.
One of the UK’s most exciting new artists whose music connects with people from all walks of life. His commanding vocals, emotional depth and addictive hooks have earned him, a slot on Later with Jools Holland, a NME’s ‘Ones to Watch 2022’ nod, and continued support from Radio 1 & 6Music. As demonstrated beautifully on the BBC Introducing stage at Latitude 2022, SIPHO’s presence will make you stop and stare.

BBC INTRODUCING
To be able to travel to Austin Texas with the BBC for SXSW is a great opportunity. This is my first time coming to SXSW, and growing up in a tough environment, I never dreamed I’d have a career where I could fly across the Atlantic to show off the best of the UK Music scene. Im so excited to be around other creatives and take in the
atmosphere. I’m looking forward to experiencing all the festival has to offer. Being at the BME I can’t wait to see all the talent not just from the BBC Introducing showcase but all of the other partners.

BPI
After an excellent restart to SXSW in 2022, it’s great to be back once again in Austin at the world’s premier live music event. This year is BPI’s 50th Anniversary and all through those 50 years we have been at the forefront of exporting British Music. We are particularly proud of being one of the partners in the British Music Embassy – a vital first international step in many UK Artists careers. We are very proud that two acts from
SXSW 2022, Nova Twins and Wet Leg, have gone on to have great success and both have picked up multiple nominations for the BPI organised BRIT Awards 2023.
We are delighted to be back in Austin for what will be another phenomenal event showcasing the best new talent that the UK has to offer. Many of the acts you will see here will go on to tremendous success, and we are rightly proud to do our part in helping them there.

DREAM WIFE
A band with a reputation for a ferocious live show and championing bodily autonomy, BME 2017 alumni Dream Wife have built a cult following of fans and can boast two LPs and a support slot with The Rolling Stones.
tim@candy-artists.com instagram.com/dreamwife
HAMISH HAWK
With the release of Heavy Elevator in 2021, Edinburgh-based Hawk established himself as a writer of heartfelt, headstrong, unashamedly literate songs to stimulate both pulse and psyche. The songs were filmic and romantic, blending wit, wisdom, resignation and beauty with a kind of skeptical joie de vivre, delivered in a rich baritone that has drawn comparisons to everyone from Jarvis Cocker to Scott Walker.
james@postelectricartists.com hamishhawk.com

Born and raised in London - via Stockholm, Spain and (briefly) New York - to a deeply musical family, singer Tyson had an unusual upbringing on the road. Whilst Tyson’s music draws from these experiences, the outcome is a celestial, interplanetary R&B that is both reflective and futuristic.

THE IVORS ACADEMY
2022 was a big year for The Ivors Academy - we increased access to musical careers through our development programmes, campaigned for the rights of songwriters and composers and provided even more events, support and advice to our members.
Mercury Prize winner, campaigner and our Chair, Tom Gray, is on a panel at this year’s SXSW focusing on streaming and the issues that come with it both in the UK and the US. We’re here to fight for the rights of
songwriters and composers and it’s important they are paid and treated fairly.
The British Music Embassy is known for showcasing the UK’s best up-and-coming talents; past Ivor Novello winners who’ve graced the stage include Little Simz, Sam Fender, The 1975, Celeste and Rag ‘N’ Bone Man to name a few. We can’t wait to add more stars to the list at The Ivors this May.
