FOREWORD I’ve been to BME more often than my son can count (he can count to eleven).
shows and book shows for artists has been debilitating in a myriad of ways. I can’t wait to get back.
Bloody good bands who can play their instruments well. Great production. An accurate schedule. That’s what I’ve come to expect from British Music Embassy and P-C and his crew have always delivered.
2022 is more special to me than any other SXSW I’ve ever attended. When I was on the way up, I had no idea what I was missing - I was grateful but often looking at my calendar for the time I needed to be at the next show. Now I know what I was missing. For the types of artists I work with, being able to play live is part of who they are and why their biggest fans love them.
When you’re on the way up, getting a slot at BME is an important badge of honor, and it’s a tough slot to get. The quality of performance is always high and the line is often down the block. I’ve watched more than a few performances outside the venue peeking in. I’m not sure how everyone else is feeling; as a member of the live music industry, coming back to SXSW after “The Pause” is incredibly exciting. I help artists develop their career/ touring business, and I’ve been in the trenches of shows day in and day out since college. Not being able to go to

FOREWORD
I think that the bands at SXSW and BME this year will play harder and with more intention than ever before. A slot at BME means a band matters. They can carry around that slot as a badge of honor. This year, they’ll hold that badge higher than ever and I believe they’ll want to prove even more that they deserve it. TOM WINDISH, EVP, WASSERMAN MUSIC

9:40PM | FERRIS & SYLVESTER The band’s long awaited debut LP is released March 11th, and ‘Superhuman’ is the distillation of literally hundreds of songs that this prolific duo have written together. Their brand of rootsy Americana feels equally at home in a SoCo roadhouse, as their new home in rural Wiltshire.

8:50PM | GEORGE RILEY George Riley has made it her mission to spotlight alternative voices and perspectives within her own soulful, jazz-inflected sound, and has been supported by Radio 1, 6 Music and BBC Introducing. The 22 year old vocalist and producer from West London works closely with friend and producer Oliver Palfreyman. The duo is fronted by George, whose Jewish and Jamaican heritage, fused with her London upbringing, make for a sound that is hard to define, but is a treat for the ears.

BRITISH MUSIC AT SXSW 10:30PM | MEMES Glasgow duo Johnny and Paul have been causing poet-punk ructions with their two man / one laptop sonic assaults and have been busy playing some of the sweariest live shows known to alt rock-kind. Get ready to mosh with their high energy set.

9:40PM | RED RUM CLUB Liverpudlian sextet Red Rum Club played the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury back in 2019, giving us an unforgettable performance. Fast forward 3 years and 3 albums later and Fran, Tom, Michael, Simon, Neil, and Joe know what they’re doing, crafting catchy indie alternative bangers. Their latest album came in at number 5 on the UK Indie Chart.
george@redrumclub.com // redrumclub.com
8:50PM | JAMIE WEBSTER This Liverpudlian people’s poet will get your toes tapping. A clever combination of folk meets rock and roll paired with masterful songwriting that will leave you utterly transfixed. Whilst his debut album in 2020 announced his arrival to the world and landed in the top 10 on the Official UK Album Chart, he’s already a firm fixture in Liverpool FC folklore and has become almost synonymous with the club, performing with many of the players and at official and unofficial supporter events across the globe.

8PM | RUTH LYON Northern songstress Ruth Lyon has an intense honesty and an impulse to tell it how it is. Making a unique brand of ‘baroque-pop’ she bares her soul - full of stark selfreflection & a nod to the absurdity of life. Ruth does it all, from self-questioning piano ballads to indie bangers. Ruth will also speak at the SXSW conference as part of the “Is the Future of Music Accessible?” session, Friday 18th 11:30am @ ACC.

BUZZARD BUZZARD BUZZARD Welsh rockers unashamedly in love with the 1970s, Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard evoke the heyday of glam rock with a sense of fun and a genuine affection for retro sounds and styles. With straight down the line denim bell-bottom rock and enough enthusiasm to fill a stadium you might be persuaded that some small part of Cardiff is still living in the 1970s.
adam@clwb.net buzzardbuzzardbuzzard.com
MOONCHILD SANELLY A South African musician, dancer and icon, she’s immediately recognisable by her signature blue hair and her self-created music genre “future ghetto punk”. Fans include Radio 1 DJ Clara Amfo who included her track with Sad Night Dynamite, ‘Demon’ on the ‘Hottest Record in the World’ feature back in October.
lauren@bandofwolves.co.uk instagram.com/moonchildsanelly
CMAT CMAT is the work of wickedly funny Ciara MaryAlice Thompson, a global pop star in the making from Dublin. Making humorous songs about serious topics, her debut single, ‘Another Day (kfc)’ came out in 2020. “It’s about a breakdown I had at a KFC a few years ago when my debit card got declined, but it’s really about getting dumped. I wanted to highlight the humour and joy that can be found when people are at their most pathetic.” CMAT is anything but, and 2022 is hers for the taking.

TALKSHOW 4-piece Talk Show burst onto the London underground scene in 2019. A down and dirty new wave / post-punk sound that’s made for the sweaty dance floors of South London basement shows. They’re a band that means business, are exhilarating to watch live, and are a must see act.
sam@wholeent.com facebook.com/thetalkshowband
GALLUS Born out of Glasgow, this five-piece band fuse old school punk sensibilities into their clean cut and yet chaotic indie. Gallus have gained a cult-like following among the Scottish punk scene. They are steadfast in their mission at every show, whether it’s a sold-out King Tut’s, TRNSMT, or a damp and dingy basement in some far-flung town; to entertain and create a palpable energy that will stay with you long after the show is over.

DIY MAGAZINE After two years away, all of us at DIY are incredibly excited to be back in the musical bosom of SXSW, armed with what we truly believe are our strongest stages yet. SXSW has always been the ultimate tastemaker festival; the mecca where bands can make or break the next part of their careers overnight, and where we journalists can get a whiff of what we’re likely to be raving about for the months to come. After all these years, it’s still the Big One, and so we’re chuffed to be hosting some of our absolute favourites both at our British Music Embassy stage and our own showcase this week. At DIY, we always aim to be right in the scrum of it, championing the superstars of tomorrow. From the voice-of-a-generation pop of Self Esteem, through to whipsmart post-punk storytellers Yard Act via the genre-blurring talents of Priya Ragu, the electronic eclecticism of Jockstrap and CMAT’s modern country stylings and more, we’re certain that this lot will blow SXSW away whilst we roam the streets of Texas trying to find the best of the best to join them. Saddle up, it’s gonna be a big week. diymag.com

Two years on from their debut album, their follow up ‘Leave the Light On’ is out on April 1st. We cannot wait!

LOS BITCHOS Your new favourite party band have just walked into your life! PPL PPL has supported the British Music Embassy since it was established in 2008, helping create a vital platform for over 450 UK artists to launch their international music careers including AJ Tracey, Arlo Parks, Celeste, Dave and Sam Fender. Each year we are blown away by those that play, be it a furious punk set, a raucous grime show, or a soulful singer/songwriter – performances which have made the British Music Embassy the go-to destination at SXSW. 2022 will be a year to be reckoned with – we have a new, bigger venue, and we will be back in Austin for the first time since 2019, celebrating the UK’s best new music on the world stage.

WARGASM Wargasm came into their own in 2021 when this British electronic rock duo from London played some of the hottest festivals and tours. Formed in 2018, English musician Sam Matlock and Northern Irish model and photographer Milkie Way make up the unstoppable force of Wargasm. They’ve released 11 solo singles and three collaborative singles, are supported by BBC Introducing and Radio 1, and the energy they bring to the stage is unmatched by anybody.

NOVA TWINS The strong bass guitar of Georgia South and the incisive vocals of Amy Love are the driving force of Nova Twins, bringing their self-penned songs to life. Refusing to conform to any template, this English rock duo from London fuse bass-heavy grimeypunk and rock, taking inspiration from all corners of audio. The result is a high octane genre warping performance that’s not to missed.

CALVA LOUISE Formed in London in 2016, CALVA LOUISE recently released ‘EUPHORIC’, a molotov cocktail of an album, with searing guitar hooks and blistering songs, along with a companion animated movie created by Jess. They’ve previously supported Razorlight, Albert Hammond Jr. and Highly Suspect and will make their US debut tour in March 2022.

JOESEF The East End of Glasgow isn’t the first place you think of when looking for the next big soul singer, but it should be, as the birthplace of the stunning vocalist Joesef! His music will make you stop in your tracks, mixing his timeless vocals with motown, jazz, and hip-hop beats. With support from BBC Introducing in Scotland, Joesef’s had plays on Radio 1 and was on the BBC Sound of 2020 longlist. His powerful vocals will draw us in and we’re not complaining.

HAMZAA Hamzaa caught the world’s attention in 2018 with breakout single ‘Breathing Pt. 2’ featuring Wretch 32 and Ghetts. This 22 year old London based singer songwriter brings a fresh rawness to the UK R&B and soul scene. With millions of streams to her name, she seemingly just can’t make a bad song. As well as headlining sold-out shows, playing Radio 1’s Big Weekend and supporting Anne-Maire and Mahalia on their UK tours, Hamzaa is definitely one to watch.

Loved by BBC 6 Music, and having played the BBC Introducing stage at Reading and Leeds in 2021, there is no stopping Low Girl. The alt-pop Hemel Hempstead artist is dropping more music in 2022 with her most recent single ‘So Cool’ having just come out in time to play SXSW. 2022 is Low Girl’s for the taking.

BBC MUSIC I’m very excited for the return of SXSW this year, there really is no festival experience quite like it! There’s music everywhere you look and so many great artists about to be discovered… I absolutely loved hosting showcases for BBC Music at the British Embassy in 2019, the crowd were amazing and so receptive to new music – I particularly remember Celeste performing and completely silencing not only the entire venue but all the people who couldn’t fit in to the packed room and were gathered in the street to have a listen. Another very special moment was seeing Sam Fender perform in the US for the first time and just wowing every single person present. Looking forward to seeing and meeting lots of you at this year’s festival! I wonder who will be the talk of SXSW 2022? - Abbie McCarthy

MMF ACCELERATOR Music is a people business – where nothing comes easy, whether making new acquaintances and networks, or having your artist build a live career. Success requires entrepreneurs to get out there, get hustling and make things happen. All much easier when you’re not locked down and working from home (or a bedroom) over Zoom or Google Teams! They shoulder an ever-demanding workload, invest financially in their clients and take seriously their responsibilities for protection and mental health. Even at the best of times, this is an isolated path. Self-care often goes out the window. Unfortunately, it’s also precisely the ballpark demographic that fell through the cracks of Government support packages. As a result, the role of the MMF has never felt so important and neither has expanding the groundbreaking Accelerator Programme, supported by YouTube Music. Since the moment SXSW was called off in March 2020, we’ve gone into overdrive to keep our membership connected with commercial partners, to campaign on their behalf, provide training sessions to help pivot their campaigns, update them on industry issues, and provide a place of unity. And during this period we grew, quite literally. The MMF’s membership has swollen to more than 1,250 UK-based managers. The influx of young managers, female managers, managers from outside London, and managers from Black, Asian, and other ethnic backgrounds has been notable – making us stronger and more inclusive as an organisation. It’s a trajectory we aim to keep on in the future. Alongside the hardships, there were also tales of resilience and innovation. Commercial rivals stepped up to help each other. Even at the worst of the pandemic, British managers achieved incredible things - many of which were celebrated at our Artist & Manager Awards and the Accelerator-supported talent part of 15 Official Chart Company albums. Now we’re emerging back into the light, and although the world is forever changed, it feels high time for normal service to resume. Fittingly, SXSW will be a major step in this process. Over 90% of showcasing UK artists are represented by MMF members. The MMF team will be out in force. Quite simply, it feels like the most exciting time to be involved in music. It’s time to get out of the trenches and off the Zoom calls. It’s time to restart the hustle. It’s time to get back to work. - Paul Bonham, MMF Accelerator

Our region produces a wealth of creative and entrepreneurial talent, and with the support of Belfast City Council’s Output Belfast initiative, we continue to develop and excel within the global creative and digital industries. The Output Belfast event will showcase the cream of new musical and interactive artists and companies that make up the Northern Ireland delegation at SXSW 2022. Join us as Belfast celebrates its biggest year yet at SXSW 2022.
LYNDON STEPHENS Lyndon Stephens brought many of his artists to play the Northern Irish events at SXSW over the years. In 2020 he sadly lost his long battle with illness and he will be much missed by his friends here at The British Music Embassy.

BABA ALI After moving from New York to London, meeting English guitarist Nik Balchin resulted in musical masterpieces. Baba Ali’s latest release ‘Living It Up’ has finally been gifted to the world after work began on the single back in 2020. After setting the song aside to work on their pulsating debut album ‘Memory Device’ Baba Ali returned to the abandoned track and immediately realised that they felt even more relevant to how they perform live on stage. We’re excited to see what 2022 has in store for Baba Ali.

THE LATHUMS A Wigan based indie rock quartet comprised of Alex Moore, Scott Concerpcion, Ryan Durrans and Jonny Cunliffe. Releasing their debut album ‘How Beautiful Life Can Be’ back in September 2021, it topped the UK Album charts going straight in at Number 1 and is a Brit Certified Breakthrough album and a BBC Introducing certified banger! Adored by BBC Introducing and 6 Music, if you’re looking for a new band to love look no further.

WET LEG Excuse me! What? You haven’t heard of Wet Leg yet? The indie duo from the Isle of White seemingly appeared out of nowhere in June 2021. Rhian and Hester are taking the world by storm with their snappy lyrics & infectious tunes. Since releasing their debut single ‘Chaise Lounge’ in June, it’s rightly on it’s way to becoming a bona fide indie anthem. Supported by BBC Introducing, Radio 1 and 6 Music, Wet Leg came in second place at the BBC Sound of 2022. Their much-awaited debut album is coming in April 2022 - not bad for a band that formed (at the top of a ferris wheel) just for kicks.

SINEAD O’BRIEN With support from BBC Introducing, Radio 1 and 6 Music this Irish punk poet (now based in London) captures the everyday and the inbetween in a way that transcends any genre label. Writing from her own observations, O’Brien’s influences can be found in the realism of Mark E. Smith of The Fall and Patti Smith, and the works of literary icons such as Samuel Beckett, W.B Yeats, Flann O’Brien, Joan Didion and Albert Camus.

WORKING MEN’S CLUB Yorkshire synth-pop band Working Men’s Club released their eponymous debut in 2020 which was met with critical acclaim. Sydney Minsky-Sargeant, Liam Ogburn, Rob Graham and Mairead O’Connor comprise this captivating new electro-rock / postpunk band. Supported by BBC Introducing, 6 Music and now with a Jools Holland performance under their belts, we’re looking forward to what’s next for this exciting Yorkshire quartet.

BBC MUSIC Our BBC outside broadcast teams have been coming to SXSW for over 15 years to discover new bands. We’ve recorded showcases from all sorts of different artists - Amy Winehouse, Stormzy, Doves, Flaming Lips, Sam Fender, Rag N Bone Man and even Loretta Lynn - just a few who’ve gone on to do quite well! SXSW can be a bit crazy, with so many gigs to see, and it can be quite funny to see a band who can sell out huge venues at home playing in a small bar. For quite a few years in our old venue the BBC engineers would record the shows from the storeroom, with our gear perched on top of cases of Lone Star. Eventually one of the bar staff would want those cases and we’d have to shift everything around. It was pretty rock and roll and a far cry from doing everything from one of the trucks we use back home, but, hey, that’s just part of the magic of SXSW. In the days before we were at BME, we’ve set up for a live radio broadcast with 9 bands (including Snow Patrol) only to be told by the venue we’re double booked and have to move upstairs in 30 minutes! Or worse during another live broadcast with the Flaming Lips the police tried to move our broadcast truck whilst we were on air... We’re looking forward to bringing some of this year’s best new British talent to play at the British Music Embassy and then broadcasting tracks on Radio 1 and 6Music. Some of these performances can be the best you’ll ever hear from a band before they blow up, so it’s really exciting to capture this for audiences worldwide to listen to on the BBC. BPI It’s been an incredibly tough couple of years for everyone, made much harder by the fact that families, friends and work colleagues have been unable to meet, network and share the simplest of occasions together. Live music has of course been especially hard hit, bearing the brunt of the pandemic’s impact on our global industry, which makes it even more wonderful to be back here in Austin – a place that’s special to many of us – to be able to take part in one of the most inspiring musical experiences on the planet. The easing of lockdown has allowed us to reconnect with the things we love, and none more so than live music. All the brilliant artists and their dedicated support (crew, managers, label, family & friends) have been itching to get back to performing in front of actual live audiences – so let’s make the most of the privilege of being here and enjoy every second of it. Here’s hoping that this year’s SXSW is the best one ever! Chris Tams, The BPI

ME REX South London’s ME REX began life as experiments in shouty electronic pop in the bedroom of songwriter Myles McCabe, who quickly joined by longtime friends Kathryn Woods, Phoebe Cross and Rich Mandell. They arrive at SXSW off the back of their debut album ‘Megabear’, a record consisting of 52 short vignettes intended to be played in shuffle mode, in order for the listener to create their own perfect combination of songs. Will they be the first band at BME to play a 52 song set?

MAX POPE Singer songwriter Max Pope makes smooth, summery, laid-back indie pop with soul-jazz influences and intimate lyrics focusing on everyday life experiences. MARSHALL We’re hugely excited to be representing Marshall Records and Marshall Live Agency at SXSW for the first time and couldn’t be happier to be here. SXSW, along with the British Music Embassy, allow our artists fantastic opportunities to showcase their unique talents to a brand new audience. Performing on the BBC stage on Wednesday evening we have the magnificent Nova Twins, an Alt Rock duo who are making huge waves in the scene. Having just finished supporting arena titans Bring Me The Horizon and Enter Shikari, the sky is the limit for this hugely talented band and this is merely the beginning. Our second artist to be showcased at SXSW are the Glaswegian quintet Gallus, who will be performing on Monday night at the British Music Embassy with the support of DIY Magazine. Gallus are signed to Marshall Records, are part of the Marshall Live Agency and bring a contemporary, bright-eyed enthusiasm into the world of rock. BABII Abbie McCarthy & The Guardian have championed this “multi-hyphenate from Margate” with the latter proclaiming her one to watch for 2022. Her forthcoming sophomore album ‘MiiRROR’ is an insight into the mind of Babii, a fantasyland of electronic pop, angels, demons, dragons and junkyard babies.

HAMISH HAWK Hailing from Edinburgh, 29 year-old Hamish Hawk recently supported Franz Ferdinand on 6 Music’s tour for Independent Venue Week. His music demonstrates a rich imagination and creates musical portraits as vivid in lyrics as they are in melody. These are chamber pop songs that have swallowed both a dictionary and a compendium of modern urban (and island) fairy tales.

ANNA B SAVAGE Signed to German indie stalwarts, City Slang, Anna was one of the breakout performances of last year’s virtual SXSW. Encapsulated by John Pareles’ New York Times review: “Solo on an electric guitar, the English songwriter Anna B Savage dealt in ruthless, self-lacerating confessionals, delivered in a tremulous, vehement contralto that brought drama to each phrase. Revealing her pain, she exorcised it.”

Fast forward 3 years and 3 albums later and Fran, Tom, Michael, Simon, Neil, and Joe know what they’re doing, crafting catchy indie alternative bangers. Their latest album came in at number 5 on the UK Indie Chart.

LIZ LAWRENCE London-based singer songwriter Liz Lawrence is the queen of bright and breezy acoustic pop, with her autobiographical lyrics bringing a stark honesty to her music. Whilst best known for her solo work and for being half of electro-pop duo Cash+David, Lawrence has also toured as part of Bombay Bicycle Club. Her powerful vocals can both mesmerise at centre stage and compliment other musicians. Liz had a productive lockdown, whilst her EP ‘California Screaming’ got its first Radio 1 plays and she wrote, recorded and produced her third album, 2021’s ‘The Avalanche’ from her garden shed.

LOW HUMMER Hull alternative rock collective Low Hummer smashed 2021. With support from BBC Introducing and Radio 1, they stormed the BBC Introducing stage at Reading and Leeds and released their debut album ‘Modern Tricks for Living’. With a line-up of multi-instrumentalists, the sound is an expression of disillusion, where only vocal harmonies and synth endure. Low Hummer say they are a “band in which nobody’s strictly anything, except skint and Northern”.

JELANI BLACKMAN Hailed as one of the most exciting rappers around at the moment Jelani Blackman is a London lad through and through. From Ladbroke Grove, the issues troubling his community are steeped in his music. Deeply attached to the city, London is in his blood. Influenced by soul and R&B but growing up in a time when Grime was dominating the music scene in the city gave his sound a unique mix of the three in the best possible way.

GEORGE RILEY George Riley has made it her mission to spotlight alternative voices and perspectives within her own soulful, jazz-inflected sound. Supported by Radio 1, 6 Music and BBC Introducing, the 22 year old vocalist and producer from West London works closely with friend and producer Oliver Palfreyman. The duo is fronted by George, whose Jewish and Jamaican heritage fused with a London upbringing makes for a sound that hard to define, but is a treat for the ears.

Since our first UK showcase at SXSW in 2002 (featuring Elbow and Oxide and Neutrino) we have learnt a huge amount about the international showcasing landscape and have worked with some amazing worldclass talent.
