Change can be a daunting thing. For twelve years we ran a tight ship at our Austin home of Latitude 30, making some great memories and friends with a great many Austinites along the way. But sadly our friend Ahmad’s lease came to an end and it was ambiguous as to what fate would befall our home from home. We put on innumerable fantastic shows there and leaving all that behind is indeed a wrench; Frank Carter breaking out the front window of the venue two songs into his set, the bartenders abandoning the bar in favour of the mosh pit for Enter Shikari, a bona-fide pop star performance from Estelle, chart toppers The 1975 and Bastille IN THE SAME NIGHT, Frightened Rabbit full stop. Ezra Collective having such a big crowd outside trying to see in that we had to put a speaker in the window, the hair standing up on the back of your neck as SOAK absolutely silenced a noisy room, the queue for Rag’n’Bone Man extending into another zip code, the palpable zeitgeist at the Kate Tempest show and the feeling you were watching something very special indeed when a then relatively unknown Yola took to the stage last year. But at the end of the day a venue is just a building. Bricks and mortar. It’s what you put in it that counts. So after a long and exhausting search we’ve landed at Cedar Street Courtyard, which was for many years one of the key SXSW venues and according to our in house photographer at least, the single best daytime venue in Austin. We are tremendously excited by the acts on this year’s line-up, and it’s their performances that really make BME special. So here’s to a couple of great pictures and hopefully a great many wonderful shows.

Bess released her ‘Big Blue’ EP in May 2019. After picking up two playlist slots from BBC 6 Music, she embarked upon a summer of festival appearances and forays into mainland Europe. About to complete her sophomore album, Bess has just concluded a European Tour with City & Colour which included two sold out shows at the London Palladium. jonathan@northernlightsmgt.co.uk bessatwell.com
THE WANDERING HEARTS
At the vanguard of a renaissance of Americana in the UK, The Wandering Hearts started life in inauspicious surroundings in Crouch End in 2015. Roll on to 2020 and they’re signed to Decca, have played Latitude and Hyde Park and reached American shores playing the Ryman and Grand Ole Opry in the same week. teresa@majorinfluence.com thewanderinghearts.com
HARDWICKE CIRCUS
Carlisle’s favourite sons hark back to a simpler time where bands got out on the road in a beaten up Ford Transit van and played every venue in the nation on the path to fame and fortune. They evoke all that is great about that period and sit at some sort of Dexy’s meets The Doors musical crossroads. dave@doublethink.tv hardwickecircus.tv
CHAINSKA BRASSIKA
8 piece ska-reggae fusionists, Chainska have wowed crowds from Glastonbury to Notting Hill Carnival. They’ve opened for legendary acts like Madness on their arena tour and Toots & The Maytals at Ally Pally and SXSW have been trying to bring them to Austin for a wee while. 2020 is their year. wozzy@bluemonkeyproductions.co.uk chainskabrassika.com SUNDAY

BBC RADIO 6 MUSIC Steve Lamacq, Presenter on BBC Radio 6Music and host of the BBC Radio 6Music showcase at SXSW “BBC Radio 6Music is a station aimed at music fans who love falling in love with music: whether its nuggets from the past they’ve never heard before, or crucially, any number of the new artists we’ve supported from the ground up. It’s a home for all kinds of music from post-punk to new jazz, from pulsing electronica to riff-laden, left-of-centre rock. In the recent past we’ve been the first national station to play the likes of Idles and Fontaines DC, while also championing acts such as Slowthai, Little Simz, Jon Hopkins and black midi. PAT DAM SMYTH
Pat Dam Smyth is a Northern Irish songsmith, known for the candour and lyricism shown in his music. His songs have earned widespread comparisons with Pink Floyd and Nick Cave, possibly helped by the fact that Bad Seeds drummer Jim Sclavunos had a hand in the mixing and production of his most recent album, ‘The Last King’. FAKE NEWS TO GOOD: HOW ADLAND’S DOLLAR CAN FUND BOTH With Good Loop In 2019 advertisers spent a massive $600bn to reach consumers with their messaging, and this figure will only grow in 2020 thanks in part to the US Presidential Election, and the Tokyo Olympics. With media spend accounting for 90 percent of a brand’s advertising budget – a lot of which has inadvertently funded fake news scandals, ad fraud and hate speech – shouldn’t marketers now move to act as conscious consumers, choiceful in how and where they place their media spend? What if they could even spend those dollars in a way that is not just neutral, but actually adds positive impact in the world? This session presents tools and techniques that give advertisers more control to avoid supporting fake news and to deliver good - for their brands, for causes and for society.
