INTRO / ABOUT ME

BACKGROUND & PASSIONS Currently, I’m a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Stout studying Graphic Design. I enjoy meeting new people and getting to know their experiences. For me, that’s a way to become more open-minded and more creative with my designs. I take in a lot of what I learn of others into my research for my designs. I also like to think abstractly about concepts and bring forth symbolism from within them. For me, that is what I like to do best. I often find myself coming up with multiple iterations to get my point across with a project. I want my designs to convey a message that otherwise wouldn’t be there if it weren’t for someone putting them into visual context. When I am not designing I enjoy cooking, reading, traveling and being crafty. Sometimes when I’m designing or trying different studio art courses it sparks a new interest within me and I want to explore it even further. Currently, I am interested in Photography, both analog and digital. I also want to explore more with zines and collaging.

CUSCO IDENTITY The main prompt for this class project was to pick a location and create a whole new identity for it. I decided to do mine in the City of Cusco. While doing the research I learned about its ancient roots with the Incan empire. With conflicts of the Native people struggling to preserve that culture in modern-day, I wanted to bring that to light with Old Becoming

new again. The logo, shield, sub marks and the flag all have symbolic meaning to the ancient city of Cusco. I wanted this identity to spark conversation as to what the city stands for and who it represents.

I grabbed inspiration for the color palette from the surroundings around cusco. I wanted to encorporate everything that was unique about the place, from the landscape, nature, buildings and the people.

PENCILS OF PROMISE For this project I decided to redesign the Pencils of Promise logo. I kept the same brand color, yellow and created a new logo that could be used on potential merchandise for the organization. Along with the logo I created potential poster, button, tote and shirt designs as well. All falling

along the idea of the organization’s mission and goals.

DOCKYARD DERBY DAMES This project involved re-branding a roller derby team. We had to create three marks that represented the main branding. The team that I choose was the dockyard derby dames. I decided to go with an underwater monster theme as the primary mark, a trident for the secondary and the initials for the tertiary mark.

OUT OF THIS WORLD I am pretty new to publications and zines in general but I found this class project intriguing. I wanted to focus on identity and specific identity of a racially ambiguous person. I pulled inspiration from my own experiences to make the phrases you see in the zine. I create a segment within the zine where it has few quite a few collages to show abstract-

ly how people who are mixed have different attributes to them no two colleges are the same kind of like people. I wanted this zine to show an experience a certain minority group may be feeling but people don’t normally talk about.

BARILLA PASTA 08

ZYMERGY CRAFT BEER 07

11

BARILLA PASTA This is a repackaging project for the pasta brand Barilla. I decided to go for a fun illustrative approach since that brands motto and theme is centered around families and traditions. I created three different boxes for three differernt types of pasta.

12

ZYMERGY CRAFT BEER Zymergy is a local brewery based in Menomonie Wisconsin. the atmosphere and fun nature of the building is what inspired this packaging. The craft beer titles also fit the theme so I created a single image around this rustic alice in wonderland and divided the image to fit the three labels.

MISH MASH 14

14

MISH MASH Mish Mash is a culinary melting pot experience. The idea around it started with the inital thoguht to have a site where recipies from different cultures collided. The site is also a place where it can assist you along the way into your cooking journey. All the dishes also share a brief history of how it came to be.

PERENNIAL INSTALLATION Perennial plants are an important part of our ecosystem because they live from season to season by growing back from the same root system, which helps preserve the health of the environment and prevent erosion. To help raise awareness for their importance, a mural was illustrated to show-

case the variety of perennials and native plants that grow naturally in the Midwestern region. The mural is displayed on UW-Stout’s Sustainability Wall in the student center. This project was a collaboration between the Student Life Design team.

SUSTAINABILITY BROCHURE This is a project that I did for my on-campus job. I work a lot with the sustainability department at UW-Stout and they wanted a brochure that focused on all the sustainable efforts that are happening around campus. The design is very compact with information but also sustainable

PORTFOLIO // BRITTANY ZAVALA

in itself because it uses less ink than normal brochure designs. The idea was to create illustrations that weren’t overbearing with the information and in turn, the color that is used is mainly for graphs, logos, and the cover illustration. The intent was so that the brochure can be printed on

recyclable paper and still stand out to those that pass by.

DEAN OF STUDENTS CAMPAIGN This campaign was made to bring awareness for the Dean of Students. There has been a negative association towards that department so they wanted to do a campaign that reflected that if you need help you can visit the office without feeling like you’re in trouble. The campgin also included motions graphics.
