BRHS Homecoming Parade returned to the Village streets It was a warm October 5th when the Broad Ripple High School Alumni Association put on a Homecoming Parade in the Village, just like old times. The parade and gathering in the school parking lot afterwards, gathered past students from many years. www.BRHSAlumni.org
For the first time, possibly since 1955 (see photo below), the BRHS Homecoming Parade marched UP Carrollton Avenue, the wrong way today. Back in 1955 the stores were Mayme Sheffield Corsets, Marott’s Shoes, and Mark’s Furniture. Today: Raymond James, JW Salon, and Hubbard & Cravens Coffee Co.

The Jewish Community Center’s 21st annual Ann Katz Festival of Books and Arts is October 23 to November 13, 2019. It is presented by the Herbert Simon Family Foundation with generous annual support from the Irwin and Ann Katz Cultural Arts and Education Endowment Fund. Hanna Fogel, who is a Content Creator and Editor at the JCC, said, “Ann Katz was the wife of Irwin (Irv) Katz (1919-2015). Irv was a founding partner of the law firm Katz, Sapper & Miller and was devoted to the JCC for more than 70 years. He was the only board president to serve two consecutive terms, leading the JCC at a pivotal time after World War II when the organization was raising funds to purchase land and construct the current facility. Irv also led the board of the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis (1972-75). This is the 21st Ann Katz Festival of Books & Arts, which means the first one would have been in 1998, but it transformed from a one-week book fair to a major three-week cultural arts event when in 2000, Irv made a significant commitment to an annual contribution over a 15-year time period. During his lifetime, Irv also financially supported the growth of adult continuing education programs at the JCC. In 2017, Irv and Ann Katz’s children established the Irwin and Ann Katz Cultural Arts and Education Endowment Fund (representing the largest-ever endowment gift given to the JCC), which will provide funding of about $35,000 every year to support JCC arts programming. Ann Katz herself was a lover of books and the arts.” The JCC’s Tiny House Roadshow, a Fiddler on the Roof-themed jazz concert and a visit from diplomat Dennis Ross highlight the JCC’s 21st annual Ann Katz Festival of Books & Arts, with three weeks of events featuring authors, films,
performing artists and fine artists. Among this year’s appearances are an expert in sustainable living (Melissa Rappaport Schifman), a professional organizer/ home stylist (Kristyn Ivey) certified Platinum in the KonMari™ Method, a local rabbi (Sandy Sasso) who is also a nationally recognized children’s author and an original Saturday Night Live writer, Alan Zweibel. Attendees may also purchase a $60 Festival Pass, which is good for general admission to all events. The Festival Pass does not include Tiny House events, Fiddler on the Roof jazz concert or VIP programs, however. The Fiddler on the Roof Jazz Concert featuring Rob Dixon (see below) is Saturday, November 2 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20. Local saxophone virtuoso Rob Dixon leads a group of musicians in a jazz concert featuring music from the well-loved musical. A Jazz at the JCC Unity Project program, is a partnership with Indy Jazz Fest and the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation for this event. The JCC’s Unity Project program’s mission is to build respect and understanding between various communities, with a particular focus on the Black and Jewish communities, through the arts and intentional dialogue. American diplomat and author Dennis Ross will speak on Thursday, November 7

Documentarian Marshall Curry Comes To Butler
Butler University’s College of Communication Distinguished Lecture Series is pleased to present Marshall Curry on Tuesday, October 29 at 7:00 PM in the Reilly Room at Atherton Union. Marshall Curry is a three-time Academy Award nominated documentary director, cinematographer, and editor. His films cover a wide range of interests and include Street Fight, Racing Dreams, If A Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front, and Point and Shoot. Curry’s short documentaries include the Oscar-nominated, A Night at the Garden, about an American Nazi rally that filled Madison Square Garden in 1939. He has been a guest lecturer at Harvard, Duke, Columbia, and NYU. In anticipation of Curry’s appearance, the College of Communication is presenting his 2009 documentary that follows two boys and a girl through a season of World Karting Association (WKA) racing as they compete and aspire to become professional NASCAR drivers. This is event is Tuesday, October 15 at 7:00 PM in Eidson-Duckwall Recital Hall. Both events are free and open to the public, no ticket required. Chatham Tap to fill vacant restaurant space at Butler
Chatham Tap, a family-friendly restaurant and pub with two locations in the Indianapolis area, will soon open a third location on the Butler University campus. The addition will fill the space at the intersection of Sunset Avenue and Lake Road, which previously housed Scotty’s Brewhouse before the chain closed in July 2019. Chatham Tap opened its first pub 12 years ago on Mass Ave. Three years after that, a second location launched in downtown Fishers. “And we have been searching ever since for the right place to open a third one,” says David Pentzien, one of three Chatham Tap owners. Pentzien says the restaurant is designed to feel like a friendly neighborhood pub. Rooted in English culture, it caters especially to soccer fans looking for a place to watch their favorite games.

“We intend to warm up the space so you get the true feeling of an English pub,” he says. But with an extensive offering of craft and import beers, along with a menu focused on a wide range of sandwiches and starters, Chatham Tap draws all kinds of guests through its doors. Offerings also include soup, salad, award-winning wings, pizza, burgers, and the house speciality—fish and chips. Bruce Arick, the Vice President of Finance & Administration at Butler, says the owners of Chatham Tap have been delightful to work with throughout the whole process. “We are excited to welcome Chatham Tap to our campus,” he says. “Both for the Butler community and our neighbors, I believe this space will be a great environment for people to create valuable connections and build relationships—all while enjoying meals from a quality menu. We’re also thrilled to be supporting the Indianapolis community by embracing local ownership.” Butler and Chatham Tap finalized a lease for the space in late August, and if all goes as planned, Pentzien expects to be open for business by the end of October. They anticipate employing approximately 50 people at the restaurant, with at least two of the General Managers having an ownership interest at the location. The space will maintain the same indoor footprint as Scotty’s had, but Chatham Tap plans to increase the amount of outdoor seating. The location’s conference room will continue to be available for private parties and business meetings. “We think this can be a great nexus between the neighborhood and the university,” Pentzien says. “We’re going to come in with a game plan, but we’re going to evolve quickly to meet the needs of the people who come to call Chatham Tap at Butler their place to gather.” Hours for the new location: Monday - Thursday, 11:00 AM - midnight Friday, 11:00 AM - 1:00 AM Saturday, 11:00 AM - 1:00 AM Sunday, 11:00 AM - 11:00 PM As is tradition for Chatham Tap, the location will also open early (and serve breakfast) for key weekend soccer matches and stay open late for Butler cultural or athletics events.

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather (class of 1896), uncle (class of 1951), father (class of 1947), sister (class of 1970) and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, and now is band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As the president of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Hello pumpkins, I hope you’re enjoying the crisp weather and taking the extended opportunity of free (through November 10) Red Line rides to explore new venues, restaurants, and bars. And Happy Anniversary to me! If I’m doing my math correctly (and there is a 50/50 chance I’m not), this is my 350th column for this fine paper (Actually 352! -AH). I so appreciate you, dear readers, for continuing to read and letting me know what is happening in the neighborhood. Most importantly, thank you to Editor Alan Hague for his freedom to write about what ever I fancy and for his infinite patience with my pushing the limits of my deadline.

The Village Ramblers have been playing since 1987. I’m convinced that band years are like dog years, so that makes them 224! Even more amazing than playing together for 32 years is that this will be their 250th show. You don’t have to be a Moose member to get into the club that evening. Steve (guitar, banjo), Val (lead guitar), and Bill (bass) play 1950s and 60s folk rock, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and the Kingston Trio. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. The History of Car Dealers in Broad Ripple as told by Glen Hague

Part One
This is the story of Ford dealerships in Broad Ripple as told through my uncle, Glen Hague. Glen was born in 1932. He attended School 80 through the 8th Grade and then Broad Ripple High School, graduating in 1951. History side note: That was the year that Charles Kassebaum, of the Kassebaum Building at Westfield Boulevard and Winthrop Avenue, also graduated from BRHS, and a year ahead of Michael Graves, architect of buildings around the world, including five that your editor knows well, the Swan and Dolphin hotels at Walt Disney World, The Thomson (RCA) buildings (now Geico and St. Vincent) at 103rd and Meridian, and the Indianapolis Art Center at 67th and Ferguson Street. Glen’s story with cars starts around 1945, but there have been car dealers in Broad Ripple ever since there were cars. The earliest listings found in my research include a 1921 ad for Osborn-Harvey Autos at 828 E. 63rd Street (today Broad Ripple Avenue). This would have been about where Sahara Restaurant and Condado Tacos is today [H4 on map]. Exact locations of early addresses is difficult as many addresses changed over the years, especially after the annexation of Broad Ripple by the City of Indianapolis in 1922. In July 1922, Osborn-Harvey sold to Broad Ripple Auto (see ad below). By 1926 the car dealer moved across the street to the south side of 63rd into 819 E. 63rd Street. Today this 829 Broad Ripple Avenue, Passwater’s Auto Specialists. At the time, this was the eastern-most building on the block. The Kilroy’s building was added around 1934 as a Standard Grocery (After Standard, that building has housed Haag Drugs, The Garage bar, a food court, Sound Warehouse, Wherehouse Music, and Cardinal Fitness). H.Y. Tench & Ray Grider were the owners of Broad Ripple Auto Company. The dealership sold Fords and Mercurys and Fordson tractors. Next door to them at the time was Kroger Grocery and Baking Co. at 817, Broad Ripple Post Office at 815, and Flanner & Buchanan undertakers at 807. These were where Old Pro’s Table is today and Taste of Havana. At the end of 1939, W. Jim Roberts bought the dealership, offering Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln-Zephyr. He also took over the used car sales at 816 E. 63rd Street, about where Rock Lobster is today. In 1940 Roberts also opened a used car lot down at Dearborn and Washington Streets on the east side. In comes George Hoster. George had started as a car salesman in 1928 at Roy Wilmeth 720 N. Meridian Street. The 1941 Indianapolis telephone book lists Hoster-Hiser Autos at 3850 N. Illinois Street. George sells out of that in 1941 and joins W. Jim Roberts as sales manager at W. Jim Roberts Ford. Around 1944 or 1945 W. Jim Roberts Ford becomes Hoster-Roberts Ford.

About this time, a young Glen Hague (13 years old) starts hanging out in the service department. Glen lives two blocks down the street at 6122 N. Carrollton Avenue with his brother John Hague, Mother Helen Dawson Hague (who works at Fletcher Trust Company), and Father Girstle Hague (a local mailman at the Broad Ripple Station). Glen discussed working at Hoster-Roberts for many months for no pay, “...because I liked cars. I passed it on the way home from school every day. I was only 13 years old and couldn’t get a work permit, so Roberts said he couldn’t hire me.” “I got ready to leave on the day before Christmas and W. Jim Roberts said, “Don’t leave, stay for the Christmas party. I was so honored that he told me to stay, I was just a 13-year-old kid.” Glen stayed for the party. He saw bonuses handed out to the mechanics. Everyone enjoyed a chicken dinner. Then, Roberts called Glen’s name. He handed him an envelope. Glen opened it and inside was a note “To our newest employee –W. Jim Roberts” and $5.

The first time that I climbed above my ideal weight was during my sophomore year at Ball State. That was the year I discovered drinking beer. Lots and lots of beer. I began sleeping more and exercising less. The trade-off seemed a good one at the time, although later, lots and lots of beer caused me more difficulty than some paunch around the middle. In high school (when I weighed 165), I could eat four quarter pounders with all the trimmings. My friend GW could eat eight (and he weighed 145). I held him in reverent awe because of his ability to put it away. Now, the thought of quarter pounder eating contests makes me sick. I would rather eat brown rice. Two comical friends of mine had a weight-gaining contest at Ball State. They weighed about 200 pounds each. The first to 300 pounds would be declared the winner. They began eating super high calorie diets. They would plot their classes out in order to burn the least calories possible. And lots and lots of beer. When they reached 270 they decided to call the contest off. Their laziness had become exhausting. Incidentally, one of the contestants (Ken Norris) began dating his future wife while he was gaining girth. She must have admired his stick-tuitiveness to sloth. These days, I eat brown rice, abstain from alcohol and exercise often. Yet the girth remains. Perhaps girth is my plight. Perhaps sumo wrestling is in my future. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Lets try to place a 6 in the right section on the middle row in the medium puzzle containing 1-2-7-9. The 6 in the right section of the top row eliminates the space between the 7-9. The 6 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces above and below the 1. The 6 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 9. The only place left is directly above the 2. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Newfield’s HARVEST brought ten thousand pumpkins to its outdoor campus and 62 hand-made and polka dot painted ones to an indoor gallery as part of the Infinity room installation by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. “My Eternal Love for the Pumpkins” is a visual delight that will make you giggle. HARVEST was just a weekend long celebration but you can experience Kusama’s work thru March 2020. The Headless Horseman is on the loose at Conner Prairie. More crafts and games for kids. Don’t miss the spooky story and song presentation on the Symphony on the Prairie stage. Local actor Ty Stover is excellent. Beautista the Witch and Dr. Acula’s Bite Neck Kitchen is geared for kids but leaves adults laughing too. The Indianapolis Art Center opens its Faculty Exhibition, always a stunning collection of work from the IAC staff, during its Artspark Fall Festival this Saturday October 19th. That show is indoors but the rest of the days highlights will be outside. You’ll find seasonal wines and craft beers at all of these events. Oliver Winery had an outstanding selection for sipping at HARVEST. Sun King offers a special ale with notes of ginger, nutmeg and apple cider for Headless Horseman. If you’re looking for some ghoulish glog any day of the week, give Leelanau Cellars Witches Brew a try. It’s a spicy, sassy red blend from Michigan. Heat it gently, don’t boil and serve warm with a cinnamon stick. Or use as a base for Spooky Sangria and add some “frozen eyeballs” ( white and red grapes) before ladling into a cup or cauldron. It’s that time of year! Everything is pumpkin. Pumpkins are an amazing veggie that are not only yummy to eat but fun to watch grow. The leaves are huge, the stems wander the ground, the blossoms are showy, and then the pumpkin begins so small and just grows and grows. It begins as a small green, round button and ends up a gorgeous orange (or white). Picking a pumpkin from the field is as personal as choosing a Christmas tree. And, you do have to remember, the size you can carry often determines your choice. Then the pumpkin moves through its life from plant to art object. Sculpting the perfect scary or funny face is a yearly tradition by every celebrant of the autumn season and Halloween holiday. Using an old knife and spoon or enlisting an electric saw, designs carved in pumpkins are limitless…simple or elaborate! Lighting the big orange sculpture can be using convention candle or newer battery lights that can provide colors and flashes. I have yet another stage to the pumpkins that are displayed on the stoops of my house. After Halloween night, they are moved to my backyard and nestled into the gardens. Here I fill them with birdseed and provide the birds, chipmunks, and squirrels an autumn buffet. This can be quite interesting because the pumpkin slowly deteriorates and surprisingly next year, a seed will make it through the winter, and grow into the next season pumpkin. This time of year is pumpkin spice everything. If you makes pumpkin soup, there is no pumpkin spice. But all baked goods rely on this recognizable combo of spices—cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, clove in the ground form. Here’s a recipe to try: Mix together 3 TBS cinnamon, 2 tsp ginger, 2 tsp nutmeg, 1 tsp allspice, 1 tsp cloves. Store this in an airtight container. You’re now ready to begin the celebration of the season by baking pumpkins pies, pumpkin bread, cake and pancakes, pumpkin-flavored coffees, and what ever your imagination can conjure. Enjoy this spicy, yummy season as you sit inside and watch you birds eat at your birdfeeders. The season moves quickly and Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner.
