BR Gazette announces new digital version News via email and at EverythingBroadRipple.com History Archives
The vast historic archive from Broad Ripple Publishing is available in the upper right wedge. It includes access to BroadRippleHistory.org, the past 16 years of photos archived on BroadRippleGazette.com, and the Virtual Broad Ripple Photo Archive at VirtualBroadRipple.com. The VBR photo archive offers clickable dots on a map. Each dot has photos taken from that spot over the years. You can also upload your pictures taken anywhere in or near Broad Ripple from any time to be included in the project! Together we can preserve Broad Ripple History. Check your old photo albums. (TIP: Often your old outdoor group photos will have something interesting in the background.) As for the puzzles in the Gazette, if enough readers comment on the sign-up form that they would print a puzzle page, then I will include it. But, I feel that printing it out is too much to ask readers to do, so the puzzles will not be included, at least at the start.

By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com Broad Ripple Publishing has created a new portal into everything Broad Ripple and it is called EverythingBroadRipple.com! Broad Ripple Publishing serves several websites to viewers and now they can all be found at one place. The new site and its associated sites are mobile-friendly, so they will format to your desktop and your phone or tablet. At the top of the new graphic is Random Ripplings, the most-frequent feature in the Broad Ripple Gazette. Random Ripplings give you the news items that you probably won’t see anywhere else - store openings and closings, construction updates, events, local art and music, local land use and zoning meetings, etc. There are also sections in the electronic news feed, either delivered via email to you or available from EverythingBroadRipple.com, for Columnists and Public Notices. Also included are Broad Ripple Museum, Historic Ad, What’s New, and other regular features often found in the Gazette.
I will talk more about our switch over to electronic news in the next issues. Our last paper issues will be Volume 16 #24 (Dec. 6) and #25 (Dec 20). The papers are always dated on the day deliveries are complete, but delivery starts the day before. It takes two days to get to all of our pick up locations. Issue #25 will contain a look back at sixteen years of the Gazette. I hope all of you will join us at EverythingBroadRipple.com and will sign up for email delivery. We want to keep bringing you the latest news from the Village!

Myranda Annakin and Jennifer Chan - co-owners of Porch Light Public Relations
Porch Light Public Relations By Mario Morone
mario@broadripplegazette.com Myranda Annakin and Jennifer Chan are co-owners of Porch Light Public Relations. They recently shed some light on their work from their office, located in Monon Station at 1055 East 54th Street on the Monon Trail. “Myranda spent 13 years at WXIN-TV (Indy’s Fox affiliate) managing the day-today editorial operations in the newsroom and coordinating coverage for events like the Super Bowl and the Indianapolis 500 before we started Porch Light. I worked in public relations agencies in San Francisco and Chicago as well as coordinating public relations efforts in-house at NoMI restaurant in the Park Hyatt Chicago before moving back to Indianapolis. Myranda and I met through our children, who at the time attended Northside Montessori, and we quickly realized we had a lot in common. As we both explored our

career paths in 2013, we realized our professional talents and personal aspirations were a great complement to each other, so we decided to go into business together. A majority of the work we do is media-relations oriented and helping clients connect with the media to tell their stories and build brand awareness on both a local and national level,” Jennifer explained. Porch Light has a diverse client base. “We work with several hospitality and lifestyle companies, IT firms and non-profit organizations. Additionally, public relations is an integral part of how well an event or brand is launched in a market, so we frequently work on projects that help clients get the word out,” she added. They were drawn to the SoBro neighborhood from the beginning, so when they were seeking new space to expand, they literally moved around the corner to their current address. “We outgrew our old space at 1111 East 54th Street, but stayed a bit longer than we wanted because we Porch Light really loved the neighborhood. When our current space 1055 E. 54th St ste D became available, Myranda moved quickly to meet the [OO25 on map] landlord, Jackie Nicholas, and design a workspace that porchlightpr.com would fit our needs. We love that it has great visibility and that we have such convenient access to the Monon Trail and exposure to potential clients in the neighborhood,” Jennifer noted. Finding the right name for a business can be hard, but the Porch Light name occurred from a perceptive observation. “Myranda was sitting at home one day and when she glanced at the porch light on her patio, it just came to her. We wanted it to be welcoming and convey the meaning of what we do. It’s a representation of helping to shine the light on our clients services and events,” she mentioned. Jennifer said, “The most rewarding thing about our work is when the media coverage we land for a client can be directly attributed to their growth. Helping people in the community learn about the amazing work that is taking place in Indianapolis and those who are making it happen is very rewarding.” Myranda added, “Being part of the White River Vision Plan was an enriching experience. We had the opportunity to collaborate with several city and county agencies as well as numerous private sector partners to create awareness for a plan to enhance and determine the future of one of our core community assets, the White River.” “When we started Porch Light, there were a lot of larger PR agencies and independent practitioners in town. It was important for us to fit somewhere in between and to help fill a niche in the market,” Jennifer emphasized. Porch Light PR co-owners Myranda Annakin and Jennifer Chan can provide your company illuminating business solutions from their office on the Monon Trail.

Give the gift of reading to Midtown school libraries
The Meridian-Kessler Neighborhood Association (MKNA) will launch an online bookstore on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019, featuring 50 diverse titles to gift books to area schools. All titles were hand-selected by librarians and media specialists at IPS CFI #84, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School, IPS CFI #70, St. Joan of Arc Catholic School and IPS #43 where the books will be donated. Books can be purchased at www.mkna.org/bookstore/ with a goal of celebrating on #GivingTuesday Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2019. The online bookstore features 50 different titles for children of all reading levels and backgrounds. The goal is to sell 500 books so each of the five schools can have two copies of each title for their students. All books will be purchased through Indy Reads Books, a nonprofit bookstore located in downtown Indianapolis committed to supporting adult literacy programs through Indy Reads. “This started out as a small ask from Cindy Wallander and Aly Schroeder, co-librarians from St. Joan of Arc,” said MKNA Executive Director Chelsea Marburger. “After chatting with them further, I learned more about their students and their desire to provide books that better represent their student body.” According to the Association for Library Service to Children, around 8 percent of children’s books published in 2014 were representative of American Indian, Asian American, Latinx and African American communities. Following the conversation with St. Joan of Arc, Marburger reached out to other schools in the area that echoed a similar need for books of all levels that serve as both a mirror and a window into different life experiences. “We are looking for support from the community to give the gift of reading to five area schools. Our youth deserve to have books with heroes and characters that look like them as well as to learn about people and experiences that don’t look like them,” said Marburger. “Every book purchased goes directly into the hands of an eager reader to learn more about themselves and their peers.” For more information, visit www.mkna.org/bookstore

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather (class of 1896), uncle (class of 1951), father (class of 1947), sister (class of 1970) and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, and now is band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As the president of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle
Happy Thanksgiving, lovelies. I hope you’ve gotten to curl up with great music and a good book for at least a few hours over the holiday. Speaking of the holidays, don’t forget your local record stores in your shopping plans. We’re so lucky to have Indy CD & Vinyl and LUNA music in our neighborhood. And if you’re reading this, you most likely picked the paper up at a locally owned business, so you know all about Small Business Saturday, November 30. Although no reason to confine your small business one shopping to just one day.
Indy Hostel Open House Sunday, November 17 4903 Winthrop Ave. - all-ages, free, 5 - 8 pm
Have you always wanted a peek into Indy Hostel? Now’s your chance! The hostel opened in 2004 and has been a smashing success ever since. The 1925 four-square house was renovated when the hostel first opened and again last year when a driver crashed into the house. Owner John Newton let me host musicians that typically played at CATH Inc at Indy Hostel. In fact John met his wife Karen at one of the shows. I’ve loved watching the hostel grow both in space and reputation. The Indy Hostel property now includes the house next door. They host an annual music festival and gobs of events including weddings and reunions. The open house will include food from Yats and music by Gary Wasson.

Pages at the Prop featuring Kassie Ritman Meridian Whispers and Meridian Street: Images of America Thursday, November 21 Indianapolis Propyleaum 1410 N. Delaware St. - all-ages, $10, 5:30 pm
I am so excited about this! First of all, the books - who doesn’t want a peek into beautiful North Meridian Street houses? Meridian Street: Images of America is packed with photographs of the iconic houses along the historic district. Meridian Whispers is a storytelling peek behind the ornate doors. Author, Kassie Ritman, spent years interviewing residents and gathering photographs. I’ve known Kassie since we were both in third grade - oh, I just realized that we’re celebrating our golden friendship anniversary. Any fun I had in high school was thanks to her. She’s a hilarious storyteller and great writer. I can’t wait to hear her stories of the interviews she conducted with long-time Meridian Street dwellers and the gobs of research she did for the books. As a bonus you’ll be able to tour the Propyleaum building. Founded in 1888, the mission of the group is “to advance educational and cultural opportunities for women and he community and to maintain and preserve the historic Propylaeum.” I’m a proud Proplyaeum member - I can always use educational and cultural opportunities. The 1410 N. Delaware house is the second home of the Propylaeum. The first house was on the site of the World War Memorial Plaza. When the city purchased the property for the memorial, the group moved to the “new” house in 1923. Books will be available for purchase. Light appetizers will be served and a cash bar is available for drinks. Purchase tickets via the Propylaeum website.

Katherine Nagy & Friends Sunday, November 24 The Jazz Kitchen 5377 N College Ave. - 21+, $15, two shows 6:30 & 9 pm
Katherine Nagy will be performing songs from her soon to be released EP Hold on to Love as well as other Gypsy Lady favorites. She will be joined on stage by some of Indianapolis finest musicians - Austin Johnson, Tim Wright, Jane Rupert, Mina Keohane, George Tyler, and David Murray. Katherine has lived all over the world, including Ireland, Puerto Rico, Spain, Chicago, Seattle and has been influenced by the music from those experiences and weaves the styles and sounds into her lyrics and arrangements. I’ve been listening to songs from the EP and really enjoying them. If fact it’s been perfect writing music. Over the years she has played the piano, the flute and the guitar, but her voice has always been the star. She has been involved in choral groups, musical theatre and classical voice training from childhood through college and beyond. At press time most of the tickets were sold for the 6:30 show. I’m looking forward to enjoying the late show.

The History of TV News in Broad Ripple as told by Jack Carter and Glen Hague
By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com
Part One
I first heard of TV News while interviewing my uncle, Glen Hague, about his days at Hoster-Roberts Ford in Broad Ripple (see Vol. 16 #21 & #22). Glen is friends with Jack Carter, both are Broad Ripple High School graduates (Glen 1951, Jack 1946). Jack ended up buying and running TV News for years. This is the story of that magazine. Years ago, before TV Guide, there was a weekly local magazine that listed all of the programs available on TV. It was back in 1950 when Don Satterfield started TV News, just a year after Indianapolis’ first TV station, WFBM TV Channel 6, went on the air. Sarkes Tarzian started WTTV Channel 10 (later to become Channel 4, home to your editor’s favorites such as Popeye and Janie, Cowboy Bob, and Sammy Terry) in Bloomington at about this same time. It required a large antenna to pick up that signal in Indianapolis. Surprisingly, Satterfield decided that Indianapolis needed a TV listings magazine when there was only one channel in Indianapolis and a weak one from Bloomington. He started publishing in the garage of his house at 6411 Riverview Drive in July of 1950. The magazine started out at about 16 pages and was small, like TV Guide would also be in a few years. In addition to the TV listings for Channel 6 and Channel 10 there was a list of TV repair shops that included A-C Radio and Raub Radio and Appliances on College, The White House on Broad Ripple Avenue, and TV Specialists on Fairfield. There were letters to the editor in every issue. Glen said that they usually wrote those letters themselves to have something interesting for the column. There were two gossip/news bits sections called “Video-Briefs” and “TeeVee Tattler” and a profile of a TV personality. When the magazine started, there were only 3 pages of TV listings, since there were only two channels. It even had a listing for the test pattern, which was broadcast daily from 2pm to 6pm! Subscriptions were $5 for 52 issues. TV News was printed by the Hudler Press, owned by Reid Hudler. [Note: Reid is likely related to Phoebe Hudler who started the North Side Topics, located at 62nd & College Avenue, in Broad TV listings for the ONE Indy channel back in 1950. Ripple in 1922. That was the year that Broad Ripple was annexed by the City of Indianapolis.] Reid Hudler also published the Noblesville Times and the press was in Noblesville. In 1953 the national version of TV Guide is published for the first time. Starting in about that same time, TV News moves into 915 Broad Ripple Avenue. This is Triton Tap today [H5 on map]. The city directories show that this location was also Broad Ripple Pizza Hut in 1958, your editor played pinball there in 1974 when it was Zap’s Joint, it was Michael’s Jewelry for about 30 years starting in the late 1970s. Next to this new home for TV News was Wally’s Grill at 921 Broad Ripple Avenue. That location has a long history of restaurants. Today it is Crab General. Over the years it has been El Matador, La Jolla, and Sabbatical. It was while TV News was in the small house on Broad Ripple Avenue that, as described in Volume 16 #22 of the Broad Ripple Gazette’s The History of Car Dealers in Broad
2040 E. 54th Street Indianapolis, IN 46220
Ripple part two, in 1954 Don Satterfield buys a car from Glen Hague. Glen is working at North Side Chevrolet at the time. Don offers Glen a job at TV News and Glen accepts. Glen recalled, “There were only four of us in the whole thing and we did the whole thing. We [printed] at Hudler Press, we did all of the other stuff here, locally, take them to the post office, bag them and all that.” Glen described the rotary, hand-cranked machine that printed out the addresses on the magazines for the subscriptions. He then put the thousands of magazines into bags and drove them to the post office. “Satterfield would not let us even go to lunch together,” recalls Glen. “Because if anything happened to us it would put the magazine out of business. We couldn’t ride together, anyplace. Always had to be separate.” “I learned I lot at the job,” said Glen. “We went to [Hudler Press] every week and stayed at the press while they were printing off some copies so we could proofread them. To this day, I can still, if I look at anything, even if The second home to TV News was 915 Broad Ripple I don’t know how to spell it, Avenue [H5 on map]. I know if it’s wrong. And, Satterfield was a nit-picker for that. We had one thing happen, I think it was Falls City Beer ad, full-page, and boy if we didn’t get the time wrong on the thing – on this big TV program coming up. We got that cured before he saw it. If we found a mistake on stuff that had already been printed, we would just all get together real quick and make sure that those got shipped to a different area (like Terre Haute that didn’t get that channel) so it wouldn’t interfere [with readers TV viewing].” I asked Glen about the stores that sold TV News. He said, “Stores had racks to put TV News in and TV Guide. I would always go in there and make sure that TV News was seen, instead of being behind TV Guide. Because the first thing people would do is grab TV Guide instead of TV News. I’d go back the next day and it’d be switched around again!” Glen explained that he would sometimes get the program information for the next issue by watching TV at the end of the hour to hear the announcement of who would be on next week. “At night, when you went home, if you had to go to the bathroom, or something, you had to have somebody checking the TV for you at the end of the program to see what they announced, if you weren’t available!” He would also call or visit the stations to get program information. “It was kind of neat calling on the channels. You get down there and knew everybody on the network and they knew you and what you were doing. And they liked seeing you because they knew it gave them publicity that they wouldn’t have had if it not been for us.” Glen mentioned that he and the other employees would get notes from Satterfield. “Don had this typewriter that missed about 2-3 spaces each time he hit a key. When he had a problem with someone he would type a letter on yellow paper and seal it in an envelope. He always used yellow paper and all the notes he sent were from that typewriter on that yellow paper. I can still see that yellow paper. He would mail it to you sometimes, instead of bringing it down. Eventually the day came when I got one of those yellow letters in the mail. I looked at that thing and I thought...” Glen had decided TV News was not for him. He grew weary of the non-stop production cycle and of the frequent yellow letters. He belonged in the car biz. He told Don that day , “You don’t need to send me any more of those yellow letters, I’m quitting,” said Glen, “But I have a replacement for me that will do a great job.” That replacement was Glen’s friend Jack Carter. Jack had been working at the White House. It was an electronics store at 910 Broad Ripple Avenue owned by Jack White. Today this is the eastern-most section of Brothers Bar and Grill [G5 on map]. The store sold appliances, did repairs, and sold records and stereo equipment. There was even a recording booth there where you could make your own 78 RPM records. [Note: your editor’s father, John Hague, made records in that booth during his high school years.] Don hired Jack as the Assistant Program Editor. I asked Jack about his first role there, “To contact all of the television stations and keep information flowing between the television station and TV News to give us all the latest information. When I first started, there were three network stations, and a total of 4 or 5 stations is all there were.”

Poetic Thoughts
by C.W. Pruitt II
The Sadistics of Statistics There were two reasons I went to Ball State University:
1. David Letterman went there. 2. They accepted me.
This is my Top 2 List.
Random Ripplings The American Village Craft Fair was held on November 2nd at Lincoln Lodge, 1790 E. 54th Street [OO29 on map].
I have been a fan of Dave’s since I was a Kentucky schoolboy. Back then, watching the Monkey Cam was my raison d’être. If Ball State was good enough for the comedy genius, it was good enough for me. Plus, Ball State took me. Indiana and Purdue rejected me because I completed only three semesters of math in high school. (And I passed those semesters by the skin of my rather bulbous nose.) At Ball State I applied myself diligently to my studies. But my over-arching fear was Statistics. My Psychology degree required two Statistics classes. I studied 10 to 15 hours per week for those Stat classes. I got a ‘B’ in both classes. Bill Cosby would call them ‘Hard B’s.’ I tried everything I could think of to ace those Stat tests. One time I studied all night at Hardee’s, drinking free refills of coffee in preparation for a 9:30 A.M. test. My brain froze when the test was administered. With most of the test time expired, it all came back to me! I didn’t study at Hardee’s again. Two girl/friends of mine aced Statistics easily. I was jealous of their intellectual hardware. It took me so much more effort to accomplish less than they could accomplish effortlessly. I guess there is some redemption in a ‘Hard B.’ I think Dave would be proud. Then again, David was a ‘C’ student. I think he would be damned impressed. CW Pruitt II has been on the poetry scene in Broad Ripple for years. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Lets try to place an 8 in the left section on the bottom row in the easy puzzle containing 3-4-6-7. The 8 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 6. The 8 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 4. The only place left is to the right of the 3. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

GIVING BACK BY THE GLASS If you’re a fan of California wines, here is another label to try. Joel Gott. Not only because it tastes good but because the winery is doing good. Fires have once again ravaged parts of wine country, and many residents are still trying to recover from the devastating fires two years ago. Gott is from St. Helena and recently announced a philanthropic program called “Gott for Good”. His winery will be sharing its profits to provide meals to families in need through the end of the year. Joel Gott Wines partnered with a food bank in that area and 23 others across the country to offer daily product and meals. For many, the holidays MEAN food: family recipes, special treats, gatherings with family and friends. But Gott says current reports show that 1 in 9 Americans face food insecurity year round, especially children and seniors. If you’re one of the fortunate ones who can host or share Thanksgiving this year, a Joel Gott wine will pair well. The Sauvignon Blanc is a zippy, tangy, dry white that works well with turkey or tofurkey, and won’t overpower your sides, whether it’s stuffing or green bean casserole. Joel Gott Palisades Red is a full bodied blend with notes of dark fruit that brings out the best in your Thanksgiving menu.

FLAVA FRESH 2019 If you’re in need of food for the soul be sure to stop by the College Avenue Library. Indianapolis artist and organizer, D. Del Reverda-Jennings has been curating the Flava Fresh contemporary fine art show for 16 years. Local Artists submit works, which are selected for exhibition throughout the year at four different venues. The College Avenue Library is one of the best places to see this eclectic, inspirational show. It’s FREE to see but the art is for sale. There’s no better way to “give back” than to PURCHASE an original painting, sculpture or photograph thoughtfully created by a local artisan. You’ll feel good too. The College Avenue branch library is on the Red Line at 4180 N. College Avenue. See more from the Indy wine and arts world on my INSTAGRAM @jaditmire

The Broad Ripple Gazette
Vol. 16 No. 23
Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Time Marches On Time is a strange dimension. It goes slow; it goes fast; it stands still. It holds memories of the past, hopes of the future, and the realities of right now. So time has touched Broad Ripple, and time has affected this special newspaper and more realistically my writing for the Gazette. I have written over three hundred and fifty columns. My topics meandered over my backyard themes of gardening, herbs, birdfeeding, dogs and cats, and musings on growing up in the area. This fifteen year run has been fun and has taught me a few lessons: 1. Being able to write for readers has been a gratifying experience–fulfillment. 2. For years my editor was my sister. She lived in Minneapolis, and we shot emails back and forth to the meet the bimonthly deadlines. I needed to continually check my spelling and omitted words–discipline, sharing and not taking criticism personally! 3. Alan Hague as editor/publisher did not express a personal view point or ask his writers to submit biased work. He gave many writers a place to voice their thoughts–gratitude. 4. I found out I could come up with hundreds of ideas to share with readers. And, I also had to meet a deadline—tenacity, creativity, and dependability. 5. I had to stretch to write for a reader and not just myself, nothing too personal or controversial–other-centered and attempts to be inspirational and positive. 6. I got to develop my ideas into a message that had a beginning, a middle, and a positive thought–opportunity to write. I will miss the touch of the newspaper. I will miss Alan popping in every two weeks with “words hot off the press.” But I am also reckoning with this time of change. My memories of Broad Ripple are strong. It was once a quaint village of commerce that ebbed and flowed with the vibrancy of the outside economy. In the past it offered so many different kinds of retail stores, groceries, five and dimes, gas stations, movie theater, department stores, car dealership, a myriad of churches, fire station, bakeries, cafeterias, dress shops and tailors, beauty shops and doctor and dentist offices. Time and the realities of today are changing Broad Ripple. Some people like the change, some don’t. People new to the village have no anchor in the past and probably see the growth as vibrancy and hope. Some old timers probably are shaking their heads in wonder as the change is drastically altering the skyline and culture of old Broad Ripple. As a final thought, if the founders came back today, they would never recognized the Village. BUT, every decade that has settled in the village develops a fierce loyalty to the ripples of the White River. The people in these decades make of the area what they need to meet their lifestyle. I am hopeful that Broad Ripple continues to live the values of the early settlers and hold the Village as a special place to live, love, and gather. This is a sign off article. I will occasionally drop Alan a column for the online editions. I am optimistic all of you will continue to enjoy your backyards, feed your birds, care for the urban wildlife, garden, look up and wonder. Finally, take care of your pets, your families and neighbors. Be kind and take care of the village.
