The Collector’s Edition

What in the world has been going on for the last 16 years?!? And how did we get here? The Broad Ripple Gazette started out in May 2004 as a four page Black & White paper. I used a school newspaper printer out of Georgia and they shipped the papers to me via UPS. I delivered them after work to stores and restaurants. I have no idea what I was thinking. I was an electrical engineer at RCA who had never worked on any kind of paper

and could barely write. Computer programs and electronic equations were what I was writing. (Although, I did run the Continental Press in my parent’s basement during my high school years. I printed wedding invitations, stationery, business cards, memo pads, and even magic tricks on vintage letterpress printing equipment.) In about 2000, I found a document in my parent’s files that was an onionskin copy of the list of Broad Ripple residents that had signed a 1922 petition to stop the City of Indianapolis from annexing the Town of Broad Ripple. That effort failed, of course, and Broad Ripple became part of Indy. I made a website (www.broadripplehistory.org) to publish that petition and start gathering the history of Broad Ripple to preserve it. A couple of years later I decided to grow that effort with a physical paper in an attempt to gather more documents and photos from readers. It grew and grew. I had to take two days off work every two weeks to do the deliveries. Eventually I had to take an early retirement because working full time and publishing the paper was too much. Now, after hand-delivering more that 2 million papers, it became clear that we have to find a less wear-and-tear-on-the-editor way to do this. That is where RandomRipplings.com comes in. Roughly the same content (yes, because of your feedback, even the puzzles) can be delivered to your email and is available on the website. The Gazette is pleased to announce the addition of an artist to our paper. R. Cody Fague is a 17-year-old student attending Broad Ripple High School in both the Art and Humanities magnet programs. Cody has lived in Broad Ripple all his life and loves it. He created the artwork for the Holy Nelter bagel sandwich at Ripple Bagel Deli. “I’ve been drawing my whole life, probably just silly stuff like cartoons the longest, but

art has always been the most enjoyable pastime of mine,” said Cody. “The art magnet at BRHS has really helped me develop my skill and give me some direction. Hopefully I’ll end up in an art school, and major in graphic design. I’m still partially undecided, but I definitely want to go into art.” Cody has many ideas for Ripple: Rendered. It will be exciting to see them in print.

Reminiscences of Old Broad Ripple by Paul Walker

A movie house opened on 63rd Street next to Zivien’s drygoods [Rock & a Hard Place General Store today][2019: Warfleigh Barber & Supply], years before the Vogue. We attended Saturday afternoons and saw a western, a serial, a comedy, coming attractions and a Pathe news reel — all for 10 cents (if we had 10 cents). On Cornell, across from the White River dam, stood Veregge’s. We kids could order candy, pop, gum and popsicles from the outside. It was an extremely popular place for us and for fishermen, as bait and tackle were sold there. North of Veregge’s stood an ice-house, just before Cornell turned and crossed over the river. I remember going in, in the summer and noting how cold it was. The floor was of ice, marked off into manageable chunks by dividers. Beside the ice-house lived the Boardman family, whose back yard ended at the Monon tracks. The Boardman house is now Merill Stage Equipment on Westfield Boulevard [2019: now Hotel Broad Ripple]. There was a siding at that point. On the siding were empty box-cars, most having some sort of smelly sawdust in them, used for packing or insulating. Frank Boardman, a very enterprising 15-year-old, availed himself of this packing. He laid out a miniature golf course in his backyard and tamped the stuff down for the balls to roll on. My E. 63rd. (now Chi-Dogs & More). The film advertised brothers and the neighborhood in the 1927 version of Resurrection. boys spent much free time there. They would catch crawdads and roast them on sticks over an open fire.

On one occasion I tried to cross the dam on the apron to where my brother John was fishing. I was nine years old at the time. The apron was slick with wet moss and down I went into the 9-foot undertow. I could not swim. John, fortunately, had Schaeffer lifesaving training, so he pulled me out, pumped the water out of me, and saved my life. He died in World War II in an explosion of his bomber on which he was bombardier-navigator. My family was a couple of jumps away from the Civil War in time. Old Grandma Boggs who lived in the “camps”, saw Union soldiers washing their socks and other garments in the canal near where the Guilford bridge now stands. Also, the mother of my friend Ben Stokes was the niece of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, and she did not let us forget it. She called Mr. Stokes and us boys “damn Yankees”, but she did smile when she said it! They also treasured a Confederate Calvary saber. She named her boys Manning Lee Stokes, Robert Lee Stokes, and Benjamin McCutcheon Stokes (McCutcheon was probably her maiden name). Their sister was named after the Confederate state of Virginia. The Stokes lived in the house on the northwest corner of Cornell [now Winthrop] and 63rd Street [now Broad Ripple Avenue]. We covered when Ralph Stanley played the Vogue in 2004. Paco’s has been in business since 1992, and has seen many changes over the years. The original restaurant, Paco’s Express, opened at 737 Broad Ripple Avenue to satisfy the craving for late-night munchies in Broad Ripple. In October 1998, Jeff Colter, along with friends Joe and Pam Haig, opened a second restaurant, Paco’s Cantina, right down the street at 723 Broad Ripple Avenue (now the home of Dick’s Bodacious Bar-B-Q). Paco’s Cantina was a much larger establishment, with a bar, extended menu, and expanded seating. When the larger establishment closed, the Paco’s Cantina name and signs were transferred to the Paco’s Express restaurant. One of the trademarks of Paco’s is the huge collection of customer photos covering the walls. This started when Colter noticed how many people enjoyed looking at a Polaroid photo of an employee taped to the Coke machine. Colter decided to use his photography skills to attract and entertain his customers. He began taking simple photographs of customers in the restaurant or while standing in line, but then decided to try something a little more fun - he began distributing hula-hoops to his customers waiting in line. The rest is history, and can be seen covering the walls. Paco’s Cantina is open until 5 am - two hours after the bars close. It still caters to the late night crowd in search of munchies, but also provides a quick stop for lunch. It provides immediate gratification with pizza by the slice, breadsticks, tacos and burritos. No fancy Paco’s Cantina 737 Broad Ripple Ave pizza toppings to contemplate here - just a hot slice of cheesy, chewy goodness. In spite of its humble abode, Paco’s makes their own Mon-Sat 11am - 5am dough with extra virgin olive oil - no prefab cardboard Sun 6pm - 2 AM crusts here. The sauce is tangy and generously applied. There’s lots of mozzarella, and the sausage and pepperoni are tasty. This is just what you need after surveying the Broad Ripple pub scene!

Coffee Corner by Molly Dagon

Café Definitions What is a barista? How do you pull a shot? And how do you tamp? Once inside a café a customer may hear such terms as barista, tamping, breve, and my own invented term “room to drive”. But what are these things? Even the size and names of drinks baffle patrons. So let’s clarify exactly what a barista is. A barista is the person who works in a café, but more specifically it is the person who physically makes the drinks. Before the barista makes a drink he/she will tamp the espresso grind. This means that pressure is being applied to the espresso head (the place where the espresso grind is held during extraction) using a round shaped mallet that fits the size of the espresso head. The act of tamping is important and crucial to the outcome of the shot pulled. Pulling a shot refers to the act of extracting the espresso. Good shots are pulled between 20-25 seconds; any shorter or longer than that is considered an under or over-extracted shot. The barista has only 10 seconds to get a shot into a drink before it is considered “dead”. There are also terms specific to how a drink should be made like breve or skinny. Breve means the customer wants the drink made with half and half, while skinny refers to skim milk. An au lait is half coffee and half steamed milk. A latte is espresso, steamed milk, and a little steamed foam at the top. Not to be confused with the latte is the cappuccino. A cappuccino is like an equation: 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk, and 1/3 foam. It can be made wet or dry based upon the customer’s preference. Wet means that the cappuccino has more steamed milk than foam, while dry means it has more foam than steamed milk. To discern if a cappuccino is made correctly, it should feel very light (compared to a latte) when lifted. Finally, a mocha is the same thing as a latte but with chocolate. If someone walks into a café but cannot decipher what size beverage to get because the size names are foreign, it is acceptable to ask for small, medium, or large. I promise the barista will be able to understand what size you desire even if you do not use the fancy names. I coined the term (or at least I believe I did) “room to drive”, which means the customer wants a regular coffee without room for cream but still room at the top so there is no excess spilling. One personal qualm I encounter many times is when someone orders beans and I ask the person what they need the beans ground for. Usually the customer laughs at me and replies sarcastically, “For a coffee maker!” Well duh, what I meant was does it need to be ground for a cone shaped filter, flat bottom filter, French press, percolator, espresso, etc (the list goes on). Hopefully these definitions make the café an easy place to understand and utilize! Molly Dagon is the manager of the Hubbard & Cravens Coffee Co. located at 1114 E. 52nd Street. What is Green – An Overview Thinking Green compels us, here at the dawn of this new millennium, to assess our relationship, as human beings, to technology – a term used here to include industry. The Industrial Revolution, which began at the dawn of the 18th century with Thomas Newcomen’s invention of the steam-driven pump, completely altered societies throughout the world. The enormous impact of the changes brought to us by this dynamic has affected all aspects of our lives, our psyche, our self-perceptions, our relationship to nature, and our expectations for the future. Technology has not only brought many marvelous benefits to our everyday lives, but also, to some minds, elevated our species to a higher level of evolution. Technological Man is higher on the evolutionary scale than Agrarian Man. Yet the ills of a technological society became apparent almost as soon as the first steam engine, fired by coal, began to severely pollute the atmosphere. It is an understatement to say that the rapid switching from agrarian rural life to urban slum life, with factory grime-choked air and open sewers festering with disease; did not make for a happy circumstance for the average peasant. These conditions, in fact, gave birth to the Arts and Crafts Movement and a style of design and architecture to which Broad Ripple, today, can rightly lay a modest claim. The Arts and Crafts Movement, as the Industrial Revolution, was born in England and migrated to America where it flourished from roughly 1880 to 1920. The movement was a revolt against the industrialization of life. The founders and proponents of the movement saw factory work as dehumanizing and unfulfilling and the manufactured object lacking in the beauty and intrinsic value of the unique hand made object. They asked “…what would become of a people so caught up in the quick production and consumption of mere things?” They brought into question whether progress was worth the price. They made a call “…to integrate labor and art, lend beauty to everyday acts and objects, and seek coherence, unity, and simplicity in all aspects of life, for all people.” These are wonderfully Green concepts from a century ago. Most are still poetically relevant today. Yet today, it is difficult, if not impossible, to imagine a way that we can return to an agrarian way of life devoid of technology even as we come face to face with the realization that our technological impact is degrading the biosphere at such an alarming rate that instead of elevating us to the next level of evolution, Technology may well be leading us to our extinction in the not too distant future. A New Day is Dawning! This was declared by Ray Anderson in his keynote speech at Greenbuild 2005 and supported by a growing international momentum toward Green. Green today is the embrace of this New Day Dawning. In a New Day Dawning, Industry will not disappear but rather begin to apply its genius to repairing the environmental damage of the past and invent new technologies to assist us in lightening the heavy footprint we currently leave on the Earth – “the rarest and most precious of objects in the known universe.” In a New Day Dawning our human hearts will reawaken to the twin virtues of compassion and respect and apply them to each other and the other two million or so species that make up the web of life - a web of which we are a part and absolutely and utterly dependent. I believe that this not only will happen but has already begun to happen. It is casually called Green. A New Day IS Dawning!

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather (class of 1896), uncle (class of 1951), father (class of 1947), sister (class of 1970) and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, and now is band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As the president of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Tammy’s Take Looking at politics, society and the ideas and people of Broad Ripple from all sides of the spectrum... By Tammy Lieber A few weeks ago, I was at that time-honored gathering place, the hair salon, catching up with my stylist about the usual—family, dogs, work, etc. Conversation meandered to the overhaul now under way at Glendale Mall, a subject Jennifer and her co-workers at the Salon at Macy’s (formerly Elizabeth Arden Salon at L.S. Ayres) are keenly interested in. The salon, like the department store, has held its own over the past several years as the rest of the enclosed mall has withered. Jennifer and her colleagues, now secure in the knowledge that Macy’s will remain at Glendale, are excited about the possibility of the new customers and new life that renovations, including a proposed Target, will bring to the shopping center. She noted, however, that some of her customers lament the end of the old Glendale, which was the first enclosed shopping mall in Indianapolis. Some of those who were around when it opened apparently aren’t convinced that an outdoor shopping center will succeed. The conversation got me thinking about the changing face of retail, not just in Broad Ripple, but nationwide. The skeptics make a good point. This is Indiana, after all. Why would anyone forego the opportunity to make one frigid (or wet, or sweltering) trip from the car to the mall’s front door in exchange for separate trips to each store? Apparently we’re gluttons for punishment. When Glendale converted to an enclosed mall in the late 1960’s, customers welcomed the opportunity to do all their shopping indoors. For many years, malls were the place for families to knock out their shopping list in one place. Now, however, the kids who grew up in malls (myself included) and their children are more likely to go outdoors, to sprawling “lifestyle centers” like Metropolis and Clay Terrace, for big shopping trips. For day-to-day shopping, we’re apt to visit neighborhood “power centers” like Nora Plaza or Trader’s Point, where several big-box retailers are linked by smaller specialty stores. We can quickly duck in and out of one or two stores and be done with it. For the past several years, local retail brokers and developers have been quietly saying Glendale’s only hope was to become a power center. Its location is still one of the best in the city—one need only travel the intersection of 62nd Street and Keystone Avenue on a

Saturday afternoon to realize how much traffic passes by. Yet while thousands of cars whizzed past outside, you could practically hear crickets chirping in the wide halls of the mall. An acquaintance and I used to chat about how we liked shopping at Glendale, back before national retailers like Old Navy and Limited abandoned it, because we didn’t have to deal with crowds. Obviously, that lack of crowds wasn’t good news for the mall’s owner, locally-based Kite Realty Group. Kite made a good go of reviving Glendale, sinking millions of dollars into it for a high-profile, well-done renovation. It worked for a while, till the tenants fled once again. Now Kite is sinking another estimated $28.5 million, including $6.5 million of city subsidies, into Glendale to tear down the middle part. The developer is betting the investment this time will finally translate into profit. As shoppers, it seems like a win-win: we get to keep Macy’s, Lowe’s, Kerasotes Theaters and the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library. Plus, we get back our Target, if all goes according to plan. As I’ve half-jokingly told a few people, “I may never have to drive north of 65th Street again!” It’s true, power centers lack the comfort and atmosphere of an enclosed mall. I doubt many kids today will fondly remember holiday shopping trips to Trader’s Point. But I predict that when the overhaul is finished in a couple of years, the only people who will miss the old Glendale Mall will be the mall-walkers who in the end were the mall’s most loyal patrons. First up is my Pint Night receipt from the Wellington. Tuesday and Wednesday nights the sidewalk sign boasts their best beer buys, $3.00 pints. Usually you’ve got four or five taps to choose from but I always get a Bell’s. If pints aren’t your thing they also feature a margarita night. Whatever night’s your niche I advise going early so you can get food from the Corner Wine Bar before the kitchen closes. It’s also in your best interest to avoid coming between a man and his dartboard, so watch where you walk!

Welcome to my new column. I’m going to let you in on my deepest darkest secrets. The contents of my purse. I think this compulsion to put everything in my purse and leave it there indefinitely comes from the “but what if I need it?” mentality. Clearly I need the 50 some items stuffed in my purse this week alone. I’ve decided to use my purse problems for the good of the Gazette readers. I’ll let you know what’s going on in and around Broad Ripple based on what my purse provides. This week my bag was full of receipts and paper goods. I’m not sure how this happened since I don’t normally keep receipts. That’s right. I’m one of those people who doesn’t balance their checking account. I don’t use any sort of spreadsheet and often I forget to pay a bill or two. Yet somehow I found receipt after receipt riding around in there.

Spoon My next random receipt (and wrapper) is from Indy CD and Vinyl. For the past two months a gift certificate for Indy CD was shoved in an envelope with my never ending stash of coupons and free stuff. Last month I swapped the certificate for a cd. I bought Eddie Veder’s new release, the soundtrack for Into the Wild. I’ve always loved Veder’s voice. This album made me melt and melancholy. I discover deep tracks I dig every time I listen to it.

Last but not least is an Indiana State Museum portfolio and copy of the Gazette itself. I swear this isn’t convenient product placement. We were invited to a downtown discovery day with lots of stops, including the Indiana State Museum. I took a paper to give to the gals at Indianapolis Downtown Inc. to show them what’s going on in our cultural district. You can read all about our recent media tour of downtown in this issue and the ones to follow.

Then I found my Broad Ripple Knits receipt. I wrote an article on their new business a few months ago and decided that was a perfect time to learn to knit. I just finished my beloved bright green scarf, which means the receipt is at least a month old from when I bought my yarn. Yes, my scarf has dropped stitches. Yes, the sides are uneven. Yes, one end is a whole 10 stitches wider than the other. But gosh darn it, I love it. Even my scarf frequently gets folded up and placed in my purse.

I’m not sure what it is about rain and our Side-By-Side Reviews, but they definitely seem to go hand in hand. Once again, we just beat the rain getting to the restaurant. This time, however, it was all done by the time we were finished dining at the Pawn Shop Pub. But we weren’t really there to admire the weather. We were there to try the food. First up, appetizers. We tried the Onion Rings, the Breaded Tenderloin Sticks and the Spinach Skins. (317) 255-5430 The Onion Rings were great. They were large slices of onions, batter-dipped and deep-fried. They were crispy and delicious without being greasy. This was a trait that was shared by all the deep-fried foods we tried that night. The Breaded Tenderloin Sticks were just as good as the Onion Rings - they were crispy, tasty, meaty and filling. The order was huge and the strips were large slices of breaded pork tenderloin. They were worth the trip themselves. I couldn’t really say the same about the Spinach Skins: potato skins filled with cheese and spinach; they normally would have been topped with bacon. Since they were ordered that night by our vegetarian reviewer, the spinach skins arrived sans bacon. They were warm and gooey and comforting, but the spinach was a little too much for me. Maybe the spinach taste would have been offset by some bacon topping. We went with two main dishes after the appetizers. I tried the Black and Blue Broker, which was a six-ounce cheeseburger with blue cheese. It was fantastic. It was juicy, drippy, and the blue cheese was tangy. This was everything I like in a cheeseburger. It was served with crunchy kettle-style chips and a very crispy pickle spear. I could definitely see myself coming back for this. I also tried the Country Sausage Sub. It’s just what it sounds like: a sub with country sausage, cheese, lettuce, tomato, banana peppers and onions. I think that this would have been better with a spicier sausage. It seemed to be a good idea and tasted ok, but it would have been really good with a little more taste from the sausage. We finished with dessert. Our only choice that night was apple pie with ice cream, and it was a good choice - a nice end to a tasty pub-style meal. The pie crust was soft and good, and the pie mixed well with the ice cream. Throughout our dinner, I noticed that the crowd at the Pawnshop Pub seemed to be a regular group, the kind of people who hang out there often. After dinner, I could see my wife and I hanging out there, enjoying the food. I would definitely come back for the Onion Rings, The Tenderloin Sticks and the cheeseburger. Next time, however, I’d make sure to have bacon on my spinach skins.

Last week you read about Bob’s challenge to stomach the hottest of the hot food. I think you should also know that Alan and I have a running challenge as well. He is convinced that one day, we will review a restaurant that has no vegetarian food whatsoever. I have faith in my local Broad Ripple eateries, and have challenged him to find such a place (see Hogheads review). I bring this up now because The Pawn Shop Pub was the most recent round of this challenge, and I am pleased to say that Alan was wrong. This resurrected neighborhood watering hole has much to offer the vegetarian diner. Though my residence in Broad Ripple began after the closing of The Pawn Shop at its former location at Kessler and College, my parents talk fondly of dates spent there over beers and nachos. This trip to the new Pawn Shop started with Bells Oberon draft and appetizers of spinach skins and onion rings. Spinach skins consisted of hollowed baked potato halves filled with spinach dip, topped with cheese and served with sour cream (I opted to have them without bacon). Though they were heavy on cheese, I found they were a nice twist on the loaded potato skin and I didn’t miss the bacon crumbles. The onion rings were thick cut, with a crisp breading to contrast the tender sweet onion center. Other vegetarian finger foods included fried cauliflower and bean and cheese nachos. One feature taken from the original menu is a selection of Honey Wheat sandwiches. Thick sliced, crusty wheat bread slices are piled high with a variety of fixin’s, like a Spinach Melt (listed with bacon) and Veggie Melt. I chose the Water Buffalo, an avocado cream cheese veggie sandwich without a trace of real buffalo. Tomato, sprouts, and hardboiled egg all made this a healthy treat, although it was heavy with cream cheese. I substituted cottage cheese for the traditional fried side dishes to keep on the healthy trend. Dessert that night was Apple Pie a la Mode! The tart apples were still crisp, not mushy at all, which left the crust lacking in crustiness. The flavor was delicious, and the ice cream melted nicely in the warm pie. The Pawn Shop Pub is a great out-of-the-way neighborhood bar, and it is big on atmosphere and service. Much of the vintage décor remains, as we learned from the owner. The food doesn’t seem overly greasy, but is still a good mix of junky delicious fare to pair with the selection of cold beer. With plenty of selection to keep happy the vegetarian and meat eater alike, the new Pawn Shop Pub is a must-visit!

I transcribed volumes of the handwritten Town of Broad Ripple Meeting minutes to publish in the gazette. We ran them for 161 issues, from 2004 to 2017, until we just ran out of space. Maybe I will take up this restoration effort again in the Random Ripplings issues. They contain lots of valuable history. This one from 1900 is part of the new curfew law:

In each issue, I will print my transcription of the old Town of Broad Ripple meeting minutes. These are taken from original, hand-written minutes that contain many spelling errors. I transcribed the records as they were entered, including errors. I will make some corrections to the text in brackets [ ]. The original minutes books are at the Indiana State Archives at 6440 E. 30th St.

Here is the ninety-fifth installment: Curfew Ordinance of 1900 part 3 CURFEW ORDINANCE no 13

At Ripple Bagel and Deli where I work, we have foaming soap in the bathroom. It’s not what most people remember from the bathroom. Most people remember the records nailed to the walls or the caged toilet paper in the corner or the new freaky holographic cracked mirror, but all I can think about is the foaming soap. I know you’ve seen this soap. You dispense it into your hand, and rather than gel, you get prefoamed soap. I get offended by it – what, am I too lazy to foam my own soap? No, I’ll take regular gelled soap over pre-foamed soap any day, thank you. Which is why I tend to use the soap sitting next to the hand sink behind the counter when a need to wash my hands arises. Susan, one of the owners, usually buys regular old gel soap. No prefoam. And I like that. And she randomly bought some lavender-scented soap a few weeks ago, which makes your hands wreak of.. Well.. Lavender, I guess, but it tends to remind me of Old Spice, which makes me think my hands are smelling a little too much of old man, and this does not sit well with me. So the question comes: foaming soap or old-man-smelling hands? I frequently suck it up and choose the latter. And, having been sick for the past few weeks, I’ve been washing my hands more often than I think I ever have, only because I wouldn’t wish this coughing madness on anyone, especially someone I’m making food for. After having washed my hands at the deli one morning, my hands now wreaking of lavender or old man or whatever it is, I ventured to the alley out back for a cigarette break. I cherish my cigarette breaks. They keep me sane. I brought the cigarette to my mouth, closing my eyes in the process, catching a whiff of lavender-scented hands and cigarette smoke, and I was immediately transported back to London. Y’see – I lived in the Bayswater borough of London for five months during my Junior year at Butler. And this lavender smoke combination was exactly the smell of the room belonging to my pub-bartender boyfriend, Fabricio. I like to become a regular at places where I hang out. I like for workers to know my name, to know what I order, to idly chit-chat with me. And when I moved to London, it was no different. I frequented a French pastry shop run by Spaniards, getting too-expensive cappuccinos, the workers knowingly giving me too much foam because I liked it, depositing an ash try on my table at arrival. I hung around at an indie rock club long enough to be tossed free vodka and cokes by the bartender, Tim, that were definitely 75% booze and 25% coke. I could also be found with a pint of Kronenburg at the Prince Alfred pub on Queensway often enough to hang out with all of the bartenders there and start dating one. Which I did. And his bedroom, littered with a Gibson rip-off guitar, half-packs of cigarettes, soccer tee shirts, rented DVDs, and a French roommate, smelled vaguely of lavender and cigarette smoke. I look fondly on my time in London, think that I should just pick up and move there, but find myself held back by a million realistic excuses. But every now and then, I randomly remember it at the oddest of times, something bizarre setting it off, like someone having the same ring tone as Fabricio, or grabbing a shawerma at Gyro Joint after a night of drinking - much like I used to do at Abomuhammed on Queensway. They had chips you’d kill for. Or sitting out back during work smoking a cigarette with hands that smell like lavender. It seems almost unfair, to be minding your own business on your smoke break only to be brought back to a place you wish you had the ovaries to move back to. Alas. Lisa Battiston has been working at Ripple Bagel and Deli since January 2004. When I was a kid, growing up in Broad Ripple was just the neatest! My memories are of fun times at the neat Village stores. I admit that those memories are getting a bit fuzzy, so I hope to hear from some of you to clear the fuzz. Do any of you remember going to the Maplehurst Ice Cream store on the corner of Broad Ripple Avenue and Guilford, where Starbucks is now? It had sit-down counters with chrome stools. It was such a treat to go there with my mom and grandmother. From there we would go over to Ed Schock’s Toy and Hobby Store. They had marvelous dolls and model kits of cars and planes, which were the toys of the day. It seems every boy I knew put together models. I have one of my first Barbie dolls, still in the original box in mint condition with the price tag on it. I am hanging onto it as a retirement investment. But the best place of all was G.C. Murphy, a dime store. It was on the corner of College and Broad Ripple Avenue, where The Scholar Inn Bakehouse is now. It had a main and lower level. The main floor had clothes (Easter dress ups), cosmetics and school supplies, among other things. Every kid went there with their teacher’s list at the beginning of the school year. But the best part was the lower level! No one can forget the pet department. It was stocked with goldfish, small reptiles (turtles & chameleons) and kittens. One day they had a drawing for a free kitten and much to my delight (and my mother’s horror) I won and brought home Mickey, a cat we had This historic ad is from 1952. Danners was at Carrollton and Broad Ripple Avenue, where the Broad Ripple Tavern is today. for many years. At this time of year Murphy’s always had baby chicks and ducks for Easter. They had the eggs under warm lights and you could watch them hatch. They would dye them pastel colors of blue, pink and green. They were so cute! With what we know now, we would never do that today. Kids got the ducks, which grew up, and no one knew what to do with them - so they gave them a home. All those beautiful (and overwhelming) white ducks that once took over the canal, had their beginnings from their ancestors that were hatched in the pet department at Murphy’s for Easter. We run this Santa story by Brandt every year:

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Backyard Birds Legend “How Santa Knows Who’s Naughty or Nice” One day, a chickadee lit on my feeder and began singing. His song told me a Christmas tale about the year Santa Claus lost the List. Goodness, Santa didn’t know who had been naughty or nice. There was no list! Three days before the big night, Santa was still searching his house, workshop and stable – no list. The Mrs. could be of no help because she had to bake her stollens and kugels to finish her holiday projects. Meanwhile, Santa bellowed, “Where is the List? There will be NO Christmas. I don’t know who has been naughty or nice!” After much rummaging and fretting, there was a peck, peck, peck at the window. Two snowy owls that lived in the hollow of the old tree outside the kitchen window pecked until they got Santa’s attention. “Can we help?” they asked. Santa replied, “Oh, if only. You see, I have no list. Without it, there will be no trip and no gifts!” The two wise owls put their heads together to try to save Christmas. They knew the reindeer could not help because they had to save their strength for the big night. The snowshoe hares were too small to hop very far. The seals only went as far south as the California Coast – not far enough. The elves were too busy making last minute gifts. Was there no one at the North Pole to help? Was there no magic left – no miracles? Finally, the aha! Only one group could help: the birds of the world. All the owls had to do was fly far enough south to issue the alert. Because birds inhabited almost every earthly corner, each bird could go to the home of a boy or girl and watch to see who was naughty or nice. Then the birds would report back so Santa could make the List again. That is exactly what happened. Christmas was saved. Santa wrote the List again because “a little bird told him so”… That is, who was naughty or nice. Because all the gifts were delivered on time that year so long ago, birds have been very much a part of every Christmas celebration ever since. Feeding the birds a special treat is an important part of the holidays – a sheaf of wheat, seed wreaths, fruit and nuts. And this is why having a bird’s nest in your Christmas tree brings luck for the New Year.

Train expert Jay Williams wrote a six-part series for the Gazette on the Nickel Plate 587 engine that was at Broad Ripple Park from about 1955 to 1983. In this photo from 1983 the engine was being transported from Broad Ripple Park, down Broad Ripple Avenue, to go back to the Monon train tracks for a trip to the Beech Grove Shops to be rebuilt. You can see the old McDonaldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sign peaking over the train, and the used cars at Bud Wolf on the right side.
