A trip to Handy Hardware submitted by BRG reader G. Edward Alley
Handy Hardware sat in the middle of Broad Ripple with dingy windows opening on a cramped, overflowing store. The smell of musty old stuff knocked you out on opening the door. On display in overcrowded bins in a happy jumble, every kind of hardware device known to homeowners. Faucets, wrenches, light sockets, screening for doors and windows, saws, hammers, electrical tools, screwdrivers strewn all over the place, some dripping onto the hardwood, creaking floor.

A few incandescent lights hung from the stamped metal ceiling. Beyond the hodge-podge of the main room stood the “back room”, where more disorder reigned. It’s a kind of workshop, where screens are repaired, windows caulked, picture frames fashioned… A wonderland of disarray in this small store something of every kind of imaginable ilk. The family who owned the place waited patiently for the uninformed, until they give up in frustration, unable to find what they want. They tired of opening a faucet package to find the washers had been removed and sold separately.
Most of the boxes have been raided to satisfy the needs of one customer or another. Then, a happy game of “Finders Keepers” ensued, the search for all the parts of anything. Of course, some of us homeowners couldn’t use what we found, because we didn’t know how to take out the old part and replace the new. So the store owner family spent time with each of us, explaining, showing, answering questions. I always left happy, confused, wondering. In all that mess, each clerk knew precisely where anything was to be found. They knew it like the inside of their unconscious, and could walk you to the spot where the item lay in innocent splendor, gleaming, under a film of dust, as if to illustrate the store’s name was prescient for its contents and uses. They lost their lease after more than 30 years. Moved to another location, but before they could impose the needed disarray, the store disappeared. People couldn’t find “Handy Hardware”, and there was no one to show them where it sat in splendid disarray. Some say it closed its doors and crept away in the night. I think it still exists somewhere. If we could only stumble onto it.
Handy Hardware was a much-loved store at 6327 N. Guilford Avenue.

More History of Cars in Broad Ripple As told by Glen Hague to Alan Hague and Elizabeth Hague in 2004
“I remember the day, it was around 1948, when W. Jim Roberts and I drove the car out to Sunset Lane with all of the pine trees to get the picture.” (see above photo) W. Jim Roberts bought this huge Duesenberg coupe on the south side of Indianapolis. It was 1936 or 1938, very expensive car in its day, very limited production. He brought it to the 63rd Street body shop at Hoster-Roberts Ford, where the Alley Cat is today. The front end of that building was the tractor dealership. They took off the body and put it on a trailer. It was wheeled over to the fenced-in used car lot, where Kroger is now. The land sloped down toward the Post Office at the back of the lot. They put the body on barrels and covered it with a tarp. It sat there for a long time. Eventually it was hauled off as salvage. The chassis of the car was mammoth. The body shop hired Clarence Shaw – the best body shop and paint guy in existence. They also got a designer from Italy or France. These two hand-formed a body out of aluminum. “It looked like a Jag XKE on steroids. It was a monstrous thing.” The door entry pushbuttons were taken from a 1946 Lincoln Continental. The original drive train was rebuilt. An huge aluminum pan was fabricated for the underneath of the car to protect it from dirt and dust. It was suspended with aircraft fasteners, spring-loaded cam locks. There were two or three machine shops making parts for the car. Every part of the dash was custom. Sometimes Roberts would have the same piece made at multiple shops so he could choose the best one. When a piece wasn’t right, he would have it made over and over until it was proper. Most of the parts were made of brass. Even the windshield frame was brass. “I remember when the first frame came back from the shop,” recalls Glen. “W. Jim spent the night trying to get it to fit. I watched him destroy it when he realized it was never going to work. He called the next morning to get another made.” In late 1949 they had the first test run of the new car on Road 100, now called 86th Street. W. Jim wanted to see how fast his creation would go. Glen drove a Miami-cream 1949 Ford convertible as the spotter. He followed W. Jim across Road 100. They were running about 110 MPH when the hood flew back on the Ford, destroying the windshield. Glen was not hurt, but the test drive was over. W. Jim was thrilled that his car hit 110

MPH. It was a success. They took the car back to the shop to check it over and found oil in the aluminum pan under the car. This was a preview of troubles to come. W. Jim was obsessed with the construction of the car. Sometimes he worked on it 24 hours a day. His plan was to leave the car at their Sunset Island home in Florida. He thought it would be a fun thing to have there waiting for him. They were never successful at building the top for the car. W Jim decided that he didn’t need a top in Florida. If he could plan the trip around the weather, he might be able to get it from Indiana to Florida topless. Harold Bowly, a sheet metal and furnace man, built a gasoline heating system for the car. He ducted the system so that it was invisible to riders. “With that heating system you could ride with no top in 10 degree weather and you were warm as toast.” It was late one night when W. Jim called Glen and said “Let’s go to Florida.” “Why,” asked Glen. “To take the Duesenberg,” replied W. Jim. They checked all of the fluids. The car was running well. They took off for Florida. They almost caused several accidents on the road with gawkers trying to figure out what kind of car it was. No one had ever seem anything like it. Somewhere in Kentucky, there were no interstate highways back then, they stopped in a small town to eat. They looked out from the restaurant and couldn’t see the car because of all the people crowded around it. “It probably looked like something from outer space to them.” Upon returning to the car they discovered oil all over underneath. “We aren’t going to make it to Florida,” Glen told W. Jim. W. Jim said they needed to get the car back to Indianapolis to fix it, and told Glen to drive it back by himself. “I am 16 years old and will not be responsible for this car!” Roberts agreed and both drove the car back to Broad Ripple. The car just laid around for awhile, because by the time Roberts got the crippled car back to the shop he photos courtesy of John D. Hague was bitter about the whole thing. Rare images of the W. Jim Robert Duesenberg project. He ended up hating the car. They threw a cover over it and eventually sold it for about $4000. Glen estimates that Roberts had about $50,000 invested in it. “We all grew to hate that car,” recalled Glen. Around 2017, Glen received a call from Jay Leno’s office. Apparently the car had been found in a barn someplace in very bad shape. Creatures had been living in it and the chassis was the only salvageable piece. Glen said Leno bought it and is working to restore the car to its original Duesenberg design.

November Land Use meeting held at PPHC By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com More than 50 were at the November 26th public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development meeting. This one was held in the basement of Purdue Polytechnic High School, 1405 Broad Ripple Avenue [I11 on map]. There were three items on the agenda, in bold below.
A) Brandon Evans from IndyGo to discuss issues regarding the Red Line.
Brandon explained that he is attending the meeting to gather feedback about the Red Line to take back to IndyGo. He said that major changes to routes and such occur three times a year and public input is considered for these changes. He verified that the Red Line fare system will start on December 1st. Fares are paid before getting on a bus at the platform. There will be random passenger fare checks on the buses. Brandon explained that the rubber medians will be replaced with a composite material, but the new median will be similar to the existing one. Some changes will be made based on Red Line bus driver feedback to make turning safer at some intersections. IndyGo system ridership was up 3% in 2019 and 5% in 2019. The Red Line platform real-time monitors are expected to be running in January or February. The existing contract for that service was canceled as it could not fill the need. There was a question about Red Line buses controlling the traffic signals, similar to emergency vehicles. Brandon said that this is not happening, but that the buses are supposed to be able to slightly lengthen a bus GO signal during a cycle. He also mentioned that the rumor of snow crews removing medians for plowing is false.
B) 6201, 6207, 6211 & 6217 N. College Avenue, Misha Rabinowitch with updates on the potential office development.
This is the 4th time for this project to be before the committee, but the first time since the project has been filed with the City of Indianapolis and is eligible for a committee vote. This is a project to raze the 4 structures along College Avenue north of 62nd and south of the Lincolnshire Apartments to build a two-building office/retail/apartment building. The details of the project are a bit fuzzy as the tenant has not been revealed yet and some of the details are not available. Here is your editor’s understanding (it may have errors): A large business currently headquartered in Indianapolis with locations across the country proposed this new headquarters for its 200-250 local employees at the 62nd and College project. Zoning ordinances require 153 parking spots. The underground garage component would supply 49 spots. A long-term lease of over 100 more spots would be secured at the parking garage across College. The north building would be retail (restaurant, shops, etc.) on the first floor with the headquarters in the 4 floors above. The south building (with College on the west and 62nd Street on the south) would be retail on the first floor with 36 apartments in the 3 floors above. These apartments seem to be mostly to used internally by the owners who currently rent living spaces all over town for visiting out-of-town employees and associates, although the details have not been explained in an understandable manner. Garage access would be through the existing alley. The project owners would work with the City to make improvements to the alley. They would also work with Lincolnshire Apartments to develop a plan for screening between the office building and the residences. The BRVA committee suggested changing the College side steps to eliminate the sidewalk jog, so as to keep the sidewalk straight along College. The Department of Metropolitan Development staff is generally in agreement with this project. City-County Councillor Colleen Fanning stated how important it is to the Village to gain a new corporate tenant of this size and what it could mean for daytime business. The committee took a vote on supporting this project and it passed. The Department of Metropolitan Development hearing is scheduled for January 9, 2020.
C) Colleen Fanning, City Councillor with an update on the Broad Ripple Park Family Center.
Colleen gave an update on the status of the Broad Ripple Park family center project. The agreement between the City, the Parks Department, and the lessee is almost complete. Indy Parks will hold a public meeting in a couple of weeks for public input on programming ideas for the facility. Colleen reiterated that this is an important project for the park. It is an $8 million private investment. The City maintains land ownership, the green space footprint is roughly the same before and after the project. The project does not affect the existing pool. The boat ramp stays open and in place. She also said that the Broad Ripple Park pool is an “end-of-life pool”, meaning that the repairs would cost more than the value of the pool. The pool will remain open until such needed repairs warrant closing it in the future. There is no committee meeting in December. The next scheduled public meeting will be on January 26, 2020, at 6pm, at Purdue Polytechnic High School, 1405 Broad Ripple Avenue [I11 on map].

IMPD E-Commerce Exchange Zones near BR
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has created an “E-Commerce Exchange Zone” at each district headquarters and encourages community members to use the front parking lots or lobby (if available) when meeting people to complete their online purchases and transactions. As more people conduct private business transactions online, there has been a nationwide increase in crime with respect to these transactions. Therefore, IMPD is taking a proactive approach to deter crime by creating an Online Purchase Safe Zone, or “E-Commerce Zone.” In an attempt to reduce the likelihood of citizens falling victim to scams or more serious crimes; IMPD has designated the front parking lot or lobby (if available) as the Online Purchase Safety Zone. These areas are under 24-hour video surveillance. Citizens who are conducting private business transactions by answering newspaper advertisements, or through online retailers such as E-Bay, Craigslist, OfferUp, Facebook etc. can finalize their business transactions in a safe place. St. Joan of Arc Community Open House to highlight restoration of historic landmark in MKNA Neighborhood
Anyone who is curious about the construction that has been taking place at the almost 100-year-old St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church located at the corner of 42nd Street and Central Avenue is invited to take a peek at a Community Open House Wednesday, December 11 from 6-8 p.m. Church members are excited to have friends and neighbors not only see but experience the newly restored sacred space. Tour guides and refreshments will be available. Founded in 1921, St. Joan of Arc was the first parish north of the Cathedral. The parish was named after the fifteenth century martyred heroine of the Hundred Years War who was canonized a Saint in 1920. At the time, the parish extended from the Cathedral parish boundaries to the Hamilton County line in what was described as “the heart of the finest residential district.” The original small mission style stucco church, constructed in 1921 after the design of local architect John Hagel, was located at Ruckle Street and Park Avenue. With a location on Indianapolis’ burgeoning north side, parish membership tripled between 1922 and 1925 and thus soon outgrew the original church. On May 1, 1928, then-pastor Monsignor Maurice O’Connor initiated a building fund to finance construction of the present church. Plans for the church quickly came to fruition and the ground-breaking took place on November 6, 1928. The cornerstone was laid 12 days later. On December 29, 1929, the new St. Joan of Arc Church was dedicated. In 2015, the parish undertook a $5 million capital campaign to fully restore the church. Phase 1 ($1.5M) was completed in 2016 and included ADA accessibility and new HVAC including air conditioning for the first time. Phase 2 ($2.1M) which began in Spring 2019 and was very recently completed included cleaning, repairing, and restoring the artwork and paint in the Church as well as enhancing the lighting. Phase 3 ($1.4M) will begin when the parish has 90% of the cash available and will include the organ, restoration of the clerestory (upper) windows and several smaller projects. The recently completed restoration was greatly needed and truly a dream come true. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather (class of 1896), uncle (class of 1951), father (class of 1947), sister (class of 1970) and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, and now is band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As the president of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Random Ripplings
Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle Dearest discerning readers, I’m sure you’ve heard the news that the Broad Ripple Gazette will be cease print publication after the next issue. [Sign up for the electronic version at www.randomripplings.com] I have been lucky enough to write the Buzzing Around Town column for the last 14 years. Publisher/editor/sales manager/delivery man, Alan Hague, offered it to me at a time when I was feeling disconnected from Broad Ripple and the music community and a little lonely. CATH Inc. at 54th and College had closed the year before and while I was loving my job (and still do!) at Second Helpings, I missed working with musicians and promoting shows. And I was frustrated that most music coverage ran heavy on the criticism or only covered the bigger shows. My goal has always been to write things that you could share with your grandmother. Thanks to Alan I’ve gotten to do that and more. Writing for the Broad Ripple Gazette has opened many doors for me – freelancing for NUVO, writing for a print music and gaming magazine, having my photographs picked up for the Indianapolis Star and Indianapolis Monthly, being a Battle of the Bands judge, a panelist on choosing the weekly top ten music events published in Metromix (remember that weekly?), and most importantly meeting thousands of readers. Counting the next issue, I will have written 356 columns. I started out with no home computer (thanks to John Newton and Indy Hostel for letting me write there). Then got an ancient computer and a dial-up connection. I would fire the thing up and go do laundry or something while I was waiting for the connection. I saved to purchase my beloved MacBook, but didn’t have enough money for a WiFi connection so I would go to Northside News Café to write and transmit the column. Several deadline nights found me in my pajamas under my coat, pressing my laptop up against the glass at 2:00 am to catch the WiFi. Things have changed for me financially. I have decent camera and laptop and internet at home. Sadly, I still push the deadline envelope. Sorry Alan – only one more time! I’m excited for Alan – and his knees – no more deliveries to 200 different stops in and out of the car and up and down steps and he can concentrate his energy on his love of sharing stories and history about Broad Ripple. I will still contribute in some way to everythingbroadripple.com. You can also find previous issues of the Broad Ripple Gazette there, in case you miss seeing my buzzing bee self. And most importantly, cheers to you!

Did you know that the first church was a Spanish Mission style building at the corner of Ruckle and Park and was constructed in 1921? The construction of the school started that same year. I’ve been enjoying the Indianapolis Art Center (or the Art League, as my dear artistic mama calls it) my whole life. I had no idea that it was founded in 1934 as a WPA (Works Progress Administration) program during the Great Depression to support artists. This is the 82nd annual student show exhibition. Each year more than 400 works are submitted, with only a select few chosen by a panel of judges to be displayed. Divided between adult and youth age groups, the collection is a sampler of art from all walks of life in the local and regional community. An award ceremony will take place at 6:45 pm inside the Frank M. Basile auditorium. There will be refreshments available including beer from Sun King Brewing Company and wine from Mallow Run Winery. The exhibition will be on display until February 5, 2020.

The History of TV News in Broad Ripple as told by Jack Carter and Glen Hague

In the last issue: Don Satterfield starts TV News in 1950, publishing from his home on Riverview Drive. He moves it to 915 Broad Ripple Avenue (where Triton tap is today). He hires Glen Hague. Glen quits and suggests his friend Jack Carter to take his job.
“Don told about the fact that he was building this nice office building over [on Ferguson Street].” Jack hadn’t been over to look at the construction. “And then when I went over there and saw that dinky little brick building I just couldn’t believe it. I had a grandiose office building in mind and there that dinky little place - no insulation in it, with brick walls and a steel-reinforced concrete ceiling - it was a horrible environment inside. Nevertheless, we were there for several years.” Don built a new building for TV News at 6331 Ferguson Street (Today this building is Ripple FX. They improved it and added a second floor.). TV News moved from Broad Ripple Avenue probably in the late Spring of 1956. Jack said of the staff at the weekly magazine, “Don had about 5 or 6 people on the masthead, but they all didn’t work at the office. As far as the number of actual working employees in the building, he probably had about 4, including myself and Bob Scott. Bob Scott deserves The Ferguson building today, with a second story. more credit than you could possible give him. He was my right hand man, I mean he was Mr. Dependable. I don’t think TV News would have been as successful as it was without Bob Scott. Jack Wheatly handled all the subscriptions, keeping them up to date and keeping the subscription files and expirations and so forth and that was it. That’s all we really needed.” I asked Jack about the subscription addressing machine that Glen mentioned, “Little stencils. Paper-surrounded stencils that we would keep in a file and then we had a couple of addressing machines and you’d pile the magazines in the machine and it would feed the magazines and the stencils...you know...each one at the same time. We had two of those, in case one would break down or something. Back when Don had it, he has the same idea except he only had this one machine and it was not automatic. You had to take one magazine and put it here and pull down a lever. Take the next magazine and pull down a lever....and I got to thinking, you know, what happens if something breaks, we’re done! So I got rid of that thing when I thought about feeding as many as 50,000 magazines one at a time...” TV News added a crossword puzzle. Jack said, “There would be certain times when we ran out of crossword puzzles to buy. So Bob would just change the clues and use the same B&W engravings for the puzzle and answer grid, but with different clues.” Originally, TV News was hand-typed and the copy was delivered to Hudler Press in Noblesville to be printed. Jack recalls when computers came in, “As soon as Tandy, you know, Radio Shack, came out with computers, we bought two or three. But before that, why, we were just handing them sheets of paper that were typed. Hudler used a string of about four linotype machines to set the type and then used these big huge flatbed letterpresses. And every Monday morning I’d have to get out of bed at about 4 o’clock and take late information changes up to Hudler. They’d have one linotype operator come

in at 5 o’clock in the morning and he would make changes on individual lines of lead type and then it was up to me to go downstairs while the press man was getting the presses ready, you know, with the ink and the rollers and all. It was up to me to put those new lines of type into the forms and pull the old lines out.” In addition to subscriptions, the magazine was available at stores. “We distributed locally and we had good circulation in the Indianapolis area then, ‘cause there wasn’t anything like it.” I asked why people bought TV News, if there were free listings in the newspaper. “They just gave you the names of the programs. We would get the episode information of what was going to happen on All In The Family that particular time, or maybe what was going to be on 60 Minutes and all that, because that was my job to get all of that information from the local stations via telephone. “We also used to get regular mailings from the 3 major networks with program information and details about the episodes. But, on the last day that we could make changes we would call the stations to ask them for the very latest changes. Of course TV Guide would call them too. Our press times were the same - we were both weekly magazines. I had built up such a good relationship with the people at the stations that they would call me as soon as they would talk to TV Guide. So, I had the same late information that TV Guide had and nobody else had, none of the newspapers had any of it.” Jack said Koch News Co (pronounced Coke) distributed the magazines in Indiana. “When we started listing the stations in Terre Haute and up and down the Wabash Valley area, they just went wild for it. Because for people who lived in that general area,TV Guide was a state-by-state deal, so all of the people who lived up and down the Wabash Valley area, in order to find out what was going to be on television, had to buy an Indiana edition AND an Illinois edition of TV Guide. We ended up outselling TV Guide all up and down the Wabash Valley area like crazy. I mean to the point where the news distributor over there ended up putting TV News in TV Guide racks. And TV Guide didn’t like that at all. It got to the point where a lot of individual dealers over there, drug stores and Kroger stores, places like that, would the put TV News in the TV Guide racks with TV Guide, only they’d put TV News in front. And that made TV Guide extremely unhappy. We were a little thorn in their side (Jack laughs), and I enjoyed every minute of that!” Jack discussed when he took over running the magazine for Don around 1957, “I went through various promotions to the point where Don decided that he and his wife wanted to permanently retire and move to Florida where they had made several trips. So he just turned the running of the magazine over to me, but his corporation still owned it. He told me, “Now Jack, don’t bother me with a lot of paperwork and sales figures and all that. Just send me a check for what ever amount of money you want to send me.” He just left it all in my hands. So, he evidently trusted me.” Jack remembers Broad Ripple in the early 1980s, “That was the time Broad Ripple started turning into one giant bar. I thought, I am going to get out. It was the beginning of the end for me because it got real rowdy. I would come to work in the morning and there would be broken beer bottles on my parking lot. One morning somebody left a car parked there overnight, right up against my front door. I couldn’t get in my own building!” Jack described a nearby bar, where on a holiday... “there’d be a hearse parked out in front in the parking lot. And it would sit there all day. You would see a man and a woman go out and get in that hearse, about every hour or so, a different man and a different woman. So it became obvious what was going on.” After running the magazine for several years for Don, now living in Florida, around 1981 Jack buys the magazine. Don Satterfield took the money that was in the bank from the subscriptions, but Jack ended up with the popular magazine and the building on Ferguson. “I got ownership of everything that had anything to do with TV News for ten grand. Then I turned around and sold the building and moved to Carmel, and remember I think I got $75,000 just for that little brick building!” The new location in Carmel was at 427 Gradle Drive. Jack recalled the distribution from Carmel, “Koch News Company would distribute them [to the news racks at stores] and after I moved everything to Carmel we were still taking all of our mailbags full of magazines for shipment to subscribers to the Indianapolis Post Office. And finally we got a call from the Carmel Post Office, and I don’t know why I didn’t think of doing that myself. The Carmel Post Office came over and visited me one day and said they would gladly take over the mailing through their post office and save us the trip. It finally got up to the point where there were about 50,000 subscribers, we were the biggest 2nd class mail user in the city of Carmel back then!” TV News was published for many more years. In 1994, at 65, Jack decided to retire, “I sold it to a printing company called Alexander Graphics in Indianapolis.” An amazing 44 year run for TV News, the little magazine that started in Broad Ripple.

alan@broadripplegazette.com There were about 130 attendees at the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Public Meeting and Election held at the Storefront Theater on November 19th. Food and drink for the event was provided by The Vanguard and Sun King. The ballot of candidates to join the BRVA board of directors was a slate pre-approved by a BRVA committee, as it was last year. Members voted on whether to accept that slate or not. BRVA president Joshua John outlined accomplishments of 2019. These included development of the River Walk project to connect Broad Ripple Park and the Monon Trail, and improvements to the Dog Park at Broad Ripple Park. Next on the agenda was Purdue Polytechnic High School principal Keeanna Warren, who spoke about the very positive opening of the 1405 Broad Ripple Avenue school [I11 on map]. IMPD commander Michael Wolley discussed crime in North District. He explained that violent crime is down. BRVA executive director Colleen Fanning shared the goals for 2020. In the works are new pedestal maps in the Village, a new fold-out tourist map, Red Line promo ideas to include local businesses, completing the design for the new Broad Ripple Avenue plan (said to be Georgia Street-like), and compiling a list of available commercial properties in the area to help with redevelopment. There was a brief Q & A period after the meeting. The discussion got a little heated when the subject of vacant properties and redevelopment came up. Projects discussed were the Metazoa proposal that was for the canal spot next to The Coil, and the project proposed for the properties along College Avenue south of the Lincolnshire Apartments. The next public BRVA meeting is scheduled for April 21, 2020 at the Indianapolis Art Center.
Alexandre Agbomi was in no way nervous about his doctoral defense. For this would make his second doctorate in English Literature. His first doctorate was earned at a French university. His second doctorate would be awarded by Ball State University. And I felt honored to be invited to witness him defend his dissertation. Alex mingled joyfully with friends and professors before his defense. He had us all in stitches as he made his Freudian jokes about his enormous tie, which appeared even longer on his short and stocky frame. We were all used to Alex’s outrageous humor, but today he was in a zone. Alex began his defense by showing a clip from 60 Minutes on the brutal dictator from the Ivory Coast. This was significant because Alex had translated a controversial Ivorian novel into English which portrayed the dictator an a bad light. It roughly chronicled his struggle from idealistic revolutionary to tyrant. At the end of his defense, Alex’s professors showed concern about him going back to teach in the Ivory Coast after translating such an incendiary work. (I don’t know if they were aware that his father had been assassinated.) He reassured them profusely. Later, Alex and I walked out of the room in our elegant suits and Alex in his largest tie. We were cracking up laughing. I think it was our way of celebrating Alex’s latest achievement. When we reached the bottom steps of Teachers College, I turned to Alex and said, “Do you think that your life is at risk by going back to the Ivory Coast” He looked me straight in the eyes and said, “If I have taught you one thing, it is this: If you have nothing worth dying for, then you are not alive at all.” A poetic thought from Alex. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s learn another, more complex, way to solve. This complicated, two-step, technique can come in handy. By elimination, using the numbers in the center section only, the green box must contain 2, 4, and 9. Using elimination for the red box, it can only contain 2, 4, or 8 (the other numbers are either above it or below it). Without even knowing where the 2, 4, and 9 are in the green box, they still will eliminate those numbers from the red box. That leaves only the 8 that can go in the red box! This is a powerful technique to use if the occasion arises.

I hope you were as happy as I to see the return of the Broad Ripple Lights Up Parade. The weather was less than festive but it didn’t stop the floats, marchers and of course Santa in his sports car from making the big loop through the village. It was fun to see so many people line the streets to watch the parade then walk the canal esplanade to take in the new snowflake lights and towering Christmas Tree at the corner of College and Broad Ripple Avenue. The evening called for a beverage with warmth and flair which made me think of The Chook, a SPARKLING shiraz from Australia. It’s a red wine with bubbles. You’ll find notes of black raspberry, and ginger on the nose and lush dark fruit flavors on the palate. The Chook is holiday food friendly and would be delicious to serve with cheese, beef, fowl or fish.

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Back to Basics “Stop the world, I want to get off” is a familiar expression that lots of us have uttered in this past year. This has been a year of extremes as well as being hurried and harried for days, weeks, or even months. Sometimes the best antidote is just to get back to basics. For me, reconnecting with basics can be as simple as walk in my backyard, where I shut the world out and take a few moments to meditate on life. Here I can experience nature without having to go anywhere. It is mine – at least while I own it. I can find solitude in my trees, my plants, my birds, my bugs, my grass. I know my boundaries here. Many of life’s basics are present in my backyard, and the changes are slow. I can see when the snow falls, the same tree remains, the grasses wave above the icy covering. The rabbits leave their prints. The squirrels come to clean up under the feeders. The birds visit daily and predictably empty my feeders. These signs remind me that the sun will rise in the morning and set in the evening. The constancy of my backyard anchors me so I can go out my front door and face the world. My dogs are as much a part of my backyard as the birds and squirrels. They probably spend half their lives in the yard. When we first moved to our house, we had a young dog named Bear. He fancied wandering the neighborhood in search of treats. So we fenced, but the benefit lasted only one day. Next came a taller fence, and then a larger fenced area for the dogs to call their “back 40.” Through the years the backyard has been the home of nine service puppies in training, three family dogs, and two cats. We have paths in the yard, we have holes, and we have discarded toys – all are defining elements. To be sure, the backyard with its dogs and other critters may be one of the best retreats no matter what time of year. Take the time to enjoy your built-in sanctuary.
