October zoning issues at BRVA committee mtg By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com There were approximately 25 in attendance at the October 22nd public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association’s (BRVA) Land Use and Development committee at Northminster Presbyterian Church. There was one item on the agenda (in bold below) although another was added at the start of the meeting. Neither of the projects have filed with the City of Indianapolis for zoning changes, so no votes were taken by the committee tonight. A. 543-545 E. Westfield Blvd., Chad Thompson from Thompson Home Sales with a preliminary presentation regarding a real estate office at this location. This proposal is to request a variance of zoning for the residence on the north end of Broadway and Westfield. This is just to the north of Heal Thyself & Co. Thompson Home Sales would move its office from 6507 Ferguson Street [C4 on map] to 543 Westfield Boulevard [I1 on map]. No structural changes are planned. The existing garage doors would be removed and windows would be installed. Signage would be added, along with some landscaping. A variance will be requested to allow for commercial use of a residence. The committee made some suggestions and agreed that when the petition is filed with the City, the committee would likely support the request. B. (ADDED) 62nd and College development update by Misha Rabinowitch. This is for the project proposed for the north east corner of 62nd and College Avenue. The buildings south of Lincolnshire Apartments and west of the alley would be razed to make way for an office/apartment/retail building. Misha handed out new project renderings and floor layout plans to the committee. This is the third time this project has been before the committee, although there has yet to be a filing with the City. For that reason, no vote was taken tonight. It is planned to have the rezoning request filed before the next committee meeting. The changes included removing a floor from the apartment portion on the south end of the building. With the stepped back top floor, the south end will now have the feel of only having three floors. This reduced the unit count to 24 and the parking spots were reduced to 49. Another major change was the softening of the flood retaining wall along college by extending steps up to the building all along College. This project is expected to be back before the committee at the November meeting. Following the agenda items, Mayor’s neighborhood advocate Mo McReynolds announced that she will be moving to a new job and introduced Natalie van Dongen who will be taking over on November 11. The next public meeting of the committee is scheduled for November 26, at 6pm, at Northminster Presbyterian Church.

BRUM Annual Thanksgiving Dinner
The Turkey Spirit is upon us and we at Broad Ripple United Methodist Church want to invite you to the All Community Homecoming Turkey Dinner November 15th, from 5-7:30 PM. This Dinner has been an ongoing tradition for over 40 years in the Broad Ripple Community and we invite you to become a part of the tradition. The cost is $8.00 per person, $7.00 for Senior Citizens, and $5.00 for children under 12 years of age. We continue to offer free dinner for Veterans and persons who are experiencing troubled times and need a delicious hot meal. The menu consists of a great turkey casserole with lots of turkey, and sides of mashed potatoes & gravy, green beans, sweet potatoes w/marshmallows, cole slaw, cranberry sauce, rolls & butter, and a wide variety of desserts. Ham is also available for those not fond of Turkey. We welcome volunteers from the community to help us put on this fantastic dinner. We need help with serving, busing tables, and clean-up etc. You are a part of this community and know that it takes a village to provide service to those around us. There is no better or more rewarding way to meet your neighbor than through a community service project. You don’t have to be a member of the church to volunteer. Please let us know by email at brumcadmin@sbcglobal.net if you are able to share in the volunteering. Of course you are welcome to come for dinner first and then stay to help. The clean-up usually takes about an hour or two, depending on the number of helpers. You are loved and appreciated! Sincerely, Cathy at Broad Ripple UMC
Village Recording Studio Releases New Music by Broad Ripple Singer/Songwriter
New music from a Broad Ripple-based singer/songwriter is now available on all major the major streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and Google Play, among others. The artist, Kessler Green, proudly takes its name from the Indianapolis street that leads to the home of the bands founder, Quinn Leach. The new album, “In Between the Ghosts”, features 12 original songs written by Leach. As a local singer/songwriter, Leach has fine-tuned his craft behind the scenes for a few years in Broad Ripple, performing solo and creating recording demos. When Leach set out to record an album in early 2018, he was taken under the wing of producer, musician and recording engineer, Brian Lee Wheat – also a Broad Ripple resident - who heard the potential of Leach’s masterful songwriting and singing. Wheat was especially captivated by the amazing influences contained within the melodies and music in Leach’s songs – folk, ragtime, gypsy jazz, neo soul, rock, and electronic music, to name a few. As producer, Wheat’s vision was to create a modern full-length studio album that reflected the breadth and depth of Leach’s influences and music talents. The instrumentation on the album includes guitar, ukulele, piano, cello, mandolin, harp, trumpet, and fiddle along with synthesizers, electronic and sampled drums, as well as a host of special studio effects for depth and atmosphere. Along with vocals, Leach contributed guitar, ukulele, mandolin and piano to the album. Wheat played bass guitar on all the tracks and arranged the drum tracks, samples, and beats. To round out the sonic palette, Wheat and Leach recruited a talented group of national and Indianapolis-based musicians, including Brian Noble (piano and keys), Chase Cotton (trumpet), Natasha Velvet (harp) Kurt Baumer (fiddle) and Renee Merrifield (piano). The result is “In Between the Ghosts”, Kessler Greens first LP record completed in the fall of 2019. The 12 songs on the album were tracked, mixed and mastered at Wheat’s recording studio,

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather Girstle Hague was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My great grandparents John E. Hague and Nora Hague lived at 6148 N. College Avenue and 6170 Guilford Avenue. My great grandparents John Dawson and Nora Ringer Dawson lived at 6122 Carrollton Avenue. My 2nd great grandaunt and uncle, Sarah Coil Thompson and Hamlin Thompson, lived at 6116 Guilford Avenue. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather (class of 1896), uncle (class of 1951), father (class of 1947), sister (class of 1970) and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, and now is band director at Crispus Attucks High School. As the president of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you.

Shame on me for not attending the weekly Jazz Jam Sessions before. My friend and excellent bass player, David Murray, invited me to join him last week. I really enjoyed the music and delicious dinner. There is a band - host Kevin Anker (piano) is joined by Fred Withrow (bass) and Mike Kessler (drums). The jam is open to instrumentalists and vocalists to either join the band or take their place for a song or two. There is always an acoustic piano, drum kit, and bass amplifier available. As always, my Jazz Kitchen meal was excellent.

The History of Car Dealers in Broad Ripple as told by Glen Hague
By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com
Part Two
In part one we started with what may be the first car dealer in Broad Ripple, Osborn-Harvey Autos at 828 E. 63rd Street in 1921. W. Jim Roberts and George Hoster are running Hoster-Roberts Ford where Passwater’s Auto Specialists and Old Pro’s Table are today. Glen Hague starts working there at age 13.
At 13 or 14, Glen just wanted to be around the cars and worked there every day, helping out where ever he could. He helped in the parts department, the body shop, doing almost everything except selling cars. Glen recalled what is now the entrance to Passwater’s Auto Specialists, “That was the
entrance to the [Hoster-Roberts Ford] service department. That had a vacuum hose that ran across the floor with a master switch around the corner there. So, when we’d go to work we’d turn that master switch on. Then when a car would drive in and hit that and it automatically opened the door. You had to be real careful some guy didn’t get in there halfway stopped or something or it would come down and...” The building just to the west on Carrollton Avenue (currently Alley Cat Lounge, Egyptian Cafe & Hooka Bar) at 6267 Carrollton Avenue was also owned by the car dealership. On the alley side of that building was the body shop for Hoster-Roberts Ford. The outline of the body shop overhead door can still be seen at the entrance to the Alley Cat. The maintenance truck shop was in past the body shop. For a few years there was a W. Jim Roberts Ford Tractor store in front part of the building. This is where the Alley Cat Front Room and Egyptian Cafe & Hooka Bar are today. The car lot for Hoster-Roberts was in back and to the east, where Kroger is today. In 1948 they got a franchise for English Ford. There were 2-door Anglias and 4-door Prefects. The cars cost $995. They distributed them all over the state. The cars were shipped in by rail. Glen would go to the station to pick them up and drive them to Broad Ripple. Joe Stout also drove them back. “We started using a tow bar to hook two cars together. That way we could get them to Broad Ripple twice as fast. One day, Joe said he was driving back and a car passed him. He said, ‘There goes one just like this one I’m driving’. We lost that one.” Hoster-Roberts added a Lubritorium inside. This was a new concept from Ford. An indoor oil change facility. “There was one guy that did nothing but keep the Lubritorium spotless.” It had two bays and a seating area for customers to wait for their cars. 1948 Hoster was elected as President of Hoster-Roberts Ford. The newspaper stated, “Hoster-Roberts will soon install the largest Ford sign in the city, which will include a clock serving North Siders 24 hours a day.” Sometime around 1948 or 1949 Hoster-Roberts Ford became George Hoster Inc. Glen recalls, “W. Jim Roberts started Neighborhood Finance at 1000 N Delaware and moved to Florida. They had a big house there on Sunset Island, near Miami.” Around this time there was a big car project going on in the body shop under the watchful eye of W. Jim Roberts. It involves a Dusenberg. More about that in another issue. George Hoster eventually sold the dealership to Dan Rohyans, who came from Columbus, Ohio, around 1951. Although, Hoster only sold him the franchise, leasing him the property. The 63rd Street (Broad Ripple Avenue) showroom and office was on a long-term lease, but the car lot behind was on a short-term, one year, lease.
The photo (and original caption) below was taken in the Royhans car lot, where Kroger’s is now. The white frame house in the upper left corner of the photo was a license branch that also did taxes. Glen recalled that William and Marie Lodge ran it. On the corner, now Jimmy John’s, was Pure Oil, run by Bud Offut. Across the street, now Vape Shop, previously Subway, was Philips 66, run by Frank Ranger. A year later, in 1953, George Hoster leases the car lot property in back to Kroger Grocery in a 50-year lease. In July 1953 Dan Rohyans was forced to close because he had no place to put the cars. Glen took all of the inventory to a used car lot that Rohyans ran at Tuxedo and Washington Streets. Glen worked here until all of the cars were gone. I asked Glen when he used to eat lunch in Broad Ripple. He recalled Borky’s, which was originally Jess Vonnburg’s Snack Shop, where McDonald’s is today, and the Broad Ripple Bowling Alley, which was just to the west of Borky’s. Glen then remembered that they had a lunch counter in there where he would eat. After Rohyans closed, Ranier Furniture opened in the 63rd Street storefront. The 819 building is owned today by Richard Passwater who lives in Florida. Dan Rohyans, owner of the “Ford Place In Broad Ripple”, Glen recalled the closing recently awarded two of his more aspiring salesmen of Dan Rohyans, “When watches for their sales efforts during the month of June. Dan Rohyans closed, the Receiving the watches from Rohyans (far right) are (l to r) Leonard R. Pavey, new car salesman, who resides at mechanics, parts dept, 6245 Kingsley Drive; and Glen Hague, used car salesman, and sales force were given of Haverstick Road (the Hague family had recently moved the option to go to the from Carrollton Avenue to the family farm at 88th and dealership at 1703 E. 38th Haverstick Road). June was Hague’s first month on the job, having only recently been discharged from the service. Street, run by Ray McKay. “The McKay dealership was east of where the Tee Pee restaurant was on 38th Street (the southeast corner of the fairgrounds). There is a little bridge off of Fall Creek Parkway that is still there that went into the back of the car lot.” When Glen left McKay he went to Northside Chevrolet on 63rd Street. The used car lot was to the east of the building. This was the old store. “One day around 1954,” said Glen, “I sold a car to Don Satterfield. That’s the guy that owned TV News. Don says, if you’re ever interested in doing something else, let me know because I’d like to have you on the team. I was on straight commission at Northside and I could get a salary deal with TV News, so I would know about how much I had coming in each month. I thought that might be fine.” He started working for Don Satterfield at TV News (Glen going to TV News is a story for another issue). It was located in an old house to the west of Wally’s Grill, now home to Triton Tap. Wally’s Grill is now Crab General. Glen leaves TV News around 1955 and went back to Northside Chevrolet when the 1955 models were out. This was the first year of the V-8 for Chevrolet. I asked Glen what it was like to switch from Ford. He said it was a little strange because you get kind of brainwashed about how great the cars are from a company. Ford had lots of powerful engines for years before the others did. He switched to Chevy and all they had was this little 6-cylinder. Glen stayed at Northside until 1956 when he told owner, Bill Kuhn, that he was going to a small dealer in Noblesville. Bill said that those little dealers in small towns would never survive. Glen went to Don Hinds Ford and sold Fords there for 42 years. It is now a huge dealership in Fishers. Bill Kuhn started Federal Finance and Quality Leasing. Quality Leasing was in Broad Ripple for decades. Today the building is Burgerfuel on Guilford. There are three Kuhn brothers – Ted, Paul, and Bill. Bud Wolf bought Bill Kuhn out. He sold both sides of the street, but kept the used car lot on the north side of the Avenue (still then when your editor was at BRHS in the late 1970s), where Joella’s Chicken is today.

Poetic Thoughts
by C.W. Pruitt II
Physics of Re-incarnation? I am almost finished reading Brian Greene’s The Fabric Of The Cosmos. Bill Emert left it with me by accident when he drove to Alaska in his van/RV circa 1975. I enjoy reading about physics, though I don’t understand it very well. If I have to come back, I would enjoy being a physicist. It’s kinda like scientific mysticism. Albert Einstein was a mystic. I would have to toss a coin to choose between Einstein or Thomas Merton as my favorite 20th century mystic. It would also be cool to come back as a jazz musician. It must feel good to play jazz and play it well. I ought to ask Rob Dixon or Frank Glover what it feels like to play the sax like they play the sax. I played the trumpet in fifth and sixth grade band, but I don’t see a professional career at this point. Maybe God will recycle me and bring me back as the second coming of Miles Davis. Yeah, that would be cool. I am a romantic when it comes to baseball. The slow pace of this All-American game gives plenty of time for spitting and scratching oneself. I wrote an article for the Gazette which described my state record for high school baseball. I conceded the most home runs by a pitcher in a varsity game. This is a record which will live in infamy. So, if I come back as a baseball player, better be juiced with talent.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Lets try to place a 4 in the right section on the middle row in the easy puzzle containing 1-2-3-5-6. The 4 in the right section of the top row eliminates the space above the 6. The 4 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces below the 1. The only place left is directly below the 2. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

WINE SWAP
President Trump’s 25% tariff on certain European goods went into effect on October 18th including wine from France (NOT Champagne though!), Spain, Germany and the UK. Wine experts predict supplies to dwindle and prices to triple. If you still want to drink like the French but pay like an American, I recommend Dry Creek Vineyards Chenin Blanc. This white wine grape flourishes in the Loire region of France and DCV grows it in Sonoma county California. Its crisp and dry with subtle notes of citrus and a clean mineral finish. Like a good French wine it’s made for food. Try it with Thanksgiving turkey or holiday ham. DCV offers it in a screw cap bottle too for easy pouring and storing. C’est magnifique!
THE ART plus WINE
I made it to The Storefront Theater the evening of the BRVA October Art Walk. The work of Indianapolis painter Stuart Alter energizes the walls of its spacious and modern lobby. Art and theater fans filled the comfortable space that night enjoying food, wine, and conversation. Stuart gave me the walk and talk tour of his invigorating, highly textured abstract work. He started painting nine years ago after a stint at piano playing didn’t satisfy his craving for creativity. Stuart creates his large, vibrant canvases by laying them flat, then applying large swaths of acrylic paints which he swirls, blends and creates ridges and layers with a paint knife. Sometimes he adds a glossy glaze to the mix creating a unique sheen to the shapes, lines and forms that seem to twist and move on the canvas. Stuart’s work is up through November. www.storefrontindy.com

MONON to MASS AVE
I hope you experienced the POP UP Outdoor Sculpture show just off the Monon Trail on Saturday October 5th. It was one of the most visually and stylishly appealing shows I have seen in quite awhile. Recent Herron School of Art graduate and Stutz Artist in Residence, Kassie Woodworth, curated a collection of mixed media sculpture from a group of up-and-coming artists in the lush, wooded, backyard home of IAC instructor Marcia Stone and her husband. If you missed it, you can enjoy Kassie’s contemporary, well crafted work now as it’s on display in the lobby of The District Theater on Mass Avenue in downtown Indy. In this show, Kassie shredded copper gutters to weave eye catching baskets of all shapes and sizes. Visually stunning and affordably priced, her work offers a great way to not only be an observer of art, but also an owner. www.kassiewoodworth.com More pictures and videos of these and other wine and arts adventures available on my FACEBOOK and INSTAGRAM @jaditmire. Fall Gatherings with Soup
• Reduces and alleviates fear, anxiety and stress • Addresses the emotional well-being of your pet as well as the physical • Fear Free procedures open the door to a happy, healthy vet visit for you and your pet
One of my favourite things to do on Halloween is to have friends and kiddos drop by for something hot and savoury. I thought how much fun this would be after football games, or really anytime you’d like to casually entertain and have plenty of time to visit with pals. I have this triple crockpot/warmer that is perfect for such a theme (I picked it up on Amazon for less than $50). What I do is make a different, hot and satisfying soup or stew for each well. Then, I set out all the “fixins” so guests can make a bowl that suits them exactly. Think of it as a soup bar. I love to offer creamy potato, tomato bisque and chicken chowder. Serve shredded cheddar, Parmesan and jalapeño jack cheeses. Then, fresh herbs: scallions, basil and cilantro. Finally, the true embellishments: crumbled bacon, garlic croutons, toasted pepitas and corn relish, sour cream, Tabasco, hot cornbread and dinner rolls or even a stack of grilled cheese sandwiches. So much fun to see everyone loading up their mugs/ bowls and best of all, it’s self-serve, so you can enjoy the gathering, too. Here are two of my favourite soups for cold weather:

Creamy Potato Soup 3# Yukon gold potatoes, chopped into 1” pieces 1/2# bacon, diced 1/2 stick unsalted butter 1/2 cup flour 5 cups chicken stock or broth 1 large onion (yellow or white), chopped 1 tablespoon minced garlic 3 cups milk 2 teaspoons sea salt 1 teaspoon ground white pepper 1 cup sour cream A few dashes of Tabasco, to taste Fry bacon over medium heat in a large soup pot or Dutch oven, removing to a plate lined with paper towels when browned (reserve the bacon to use as a garnish). Add the chopped onion and butter and continue cooking over medium for about 3 minutes. Add garlic and stir for about a minute, then whisk in flour. Constantly whisk for another minute to combine. Add remaining ingredients (except potatoes) and continue to whisk while bringing the mixture to a boil. As soon as it reaches a slow boil, reduce heat to medium and add potatoes. Cook for about 10 minutes, until potatoes are fork-tender. At this point, you can remove (carefully) about half the soup to a blender and process until smooth. I personally prefer to use my immersion blender and give the whole thing a few pulses right in the pot. Let your personal preferences for chunkiness be your guide. Let the soup simmer a few more minutes (10ish) before serving. Pro Tip: When re-heating, be sure to stir constantly so the milky soup doesn’t scorch your pan.
Tomato Bisque 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 large onion, diced 2 medium-sized carrots, diced 1 stalk of celery, lard, with leafy bits if you have them 2 Tablespoons minced garlic 1 large can of whole tomatoes in juice (28 oz) 1 cup stock (I use chicken or veggie) 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon dried basil 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 cup heavy cream Salt and pepper, as needed Heat butter and oil in a soup pot or dutch oven. Add onion, carrot and celery and sauté for 3 minutes. Add garlic and sauté another minute, stirring so garlic doesn’t burn. Add tomatoes, stock and spices. Stir to combine and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes Puree soup in a blender (again, I use an immersion blender for this step and leave a few chunks of tomato for texture.) Add the heavy cream to the soup and serve. Pro Tip: This is excellent with croutons and Parmesan, but also really good served in a toasted bread boule. Do you have a favourite soup recipe?
