Dear Members The end of our construction is in sight!! Yes, by the end of March construction should be finished on our new Spa/ Fitness facility. There will be a punch list to finish and probably some ongoing minor work for a week or so, but in the main the trucks and workers will be gone and you will be enjoying your new facilities. An update as of almost the end of February follows: The Spa is approximately 80% completed and looking beautiful. The furniture and equipment is due to be delivered and installed the first 2 weeks of March. We are looking forward to a soft opening to test operations at that time and will be in full operation by the end of the month. In the Fitness area we are working on our punch list diligently and by the time you are reading this a lot should be completed. Please remember that in this area we broke with policy and opened the area before it was 100% completed. This was done to enable you to utilize the facility at the earliest possible time knowing that there were certain minor deficiencies that we were still going to have to work on as you exercised. Your cooperation in this regard was and is appreciated. The Aerobic rooms are in the process of being finished and floors are being installed this week. The Spinning room is complete and waiting for the new bikes. Wait until you see the 9' x 5’ TV wall in high definition as you ride along the beaches of Maui. The Wellness rooms are complete and the Pilates rooms are waiting for equipment. The main entrance is framed and sheetrock will be going up shortly. The Salon for pedicures, manicures and hair blowouts is also framed and waiting for sheetrock along with the men’s barbershop. The Spa Cafe is being framed at present and the Tennis/Fitness Pro Shop is being readied for the receipt of fixtures along with the offices in its rear. This area has been a cause for delay as we ran into some unexpected problems while the contractors were working on the demolition of the original building.. There were some solid walls that had to come down that were not indicated on the plans and the roof reinforced with some steel. All was accomplished to everyone’s satisfaction. The Terrace, which I believe everyone is going to love along with everything else, is presently serving as a holding area for supplies; there is not much work to do in this area but to furnish. The construction in the last three or so years has reduced your full enjoyment of our wonderful Club, but they are over. The metamorphosis has been completed and with that we have changed some of our Club so that our current and future members will enjoy all of our amenities. Additionally we are now more than competitive with neighboring facilities, a necessity as we compete for new members that will enable Broken Sound to thrive going forward.
Yes, there still are some minor projects on the horizon like the repaving of the Tennis/Fitness center parking lot, the reconfiguration of the basement of the Golf pro shop to allow for adequate bag storage, and the restructuring of the pool locker rooms which all have to be done. However these should not interfere with your use of our facilities to any large degree. There has been a lot of time put in by our building and design committees and management. All was done with a passion that they hope you feel and enjoy, and we look forward to discovering all that is being offered. Have a great month. Events The 2013 Men’s and Women’s Club Course Member Guest Events were a tremendous success. Both events combined, touted over 400 Members and their Guests. Players flew in from all over the Country to experience the exquisite decorations and fantastic course conditions only Broken Sound Club Course could offer. Following play everyone enjoyed an amazing spread in the dining room during the awards banquet. Every year the Club Course Member Guests raises the bar on just how much fun a golf event can be. The Club Course really goes to all lengths to create a unique atmosphere for all our Members and their Guests to enjoy. Thank you to all the Member Guest Committee Members for all their hard work.

Dear Golfers, The 2013 golf season has been one of the most successful years in recent history. We have experienced great weather and fabulous course conditions all year long. With the New Year brings in many new hopes for our golf game. We sincerely hope that the spirit of competition and good will prevails this year for all of our Club Members. In December our very own BSWWGA held their annual Holiday Charity Event. This year the ladies raised over $2000 in donations for The American Association of Caregiving Youth. The ladies played 18 holes and met for lunch to raise money for this deserving charity. Congratulations to the BSWWGA for such a wonderful job helping the community. Starting February 1st our new numbered tee markers have brought many compliments from the Membership at the Club Course. Our new tees consist of numbers rather than colors and are golfer friendly for players of all levels and skill sets. By using the suggested yardage chart, players can discover the tee that is most suitable to their game. This is just one way the Club Course has helped to make the game more enjoyable for everyone.
As the winter season progresses it is hard to believe we are already looking ahead to our Men’s and Ladies Leagues closing events upcoming in April. With record participation in our leagues we can only expect a large turnout and fabulous time.

Sunday, April 21, 2013 All golf members of Broken Sound are invited to participate in our annual fundraiser for Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer Research. The event includes lunch, golf at the Old Course, cocktails and dinner as well as a silent auction and some very special events. Broken Sound Club has raised more than $350,000 for these 2 charities over the past 15 years.
2012 GCSAA/Golf Digest Environmental Leaders Broken Sound Club among the 14 chapter winners selected from GCSAA’s 99 affiliated chapters. The Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards (ELGA) recognize golf course superintendents and their courses for overall course management excellence in the areas of resource conservation, water quality management, integrated pest management, wildlife/habitat management and education/outreach. In addition, these categories are judged on sustainability, criticality, originality and technology implementation/use. An independent panel of judges representing national environmental groups, turfgrass experts, university research and members of the golf community conducted the award selection. We congratulate Joseph Hubbard, CGCS and his staff on this achievement.

The Power Of Position Ever been in the wrong place at the wrong time? What an uncomfortable feeling. You were probably a bit unsure of yourself and befuddled as to what to do. On the other hand, remember being in the right place at the right time? You probably can recall all of the details surrounding that event. Just thinking about it conjures up some good memories! Now let’s compare those experiences with your tennis game. Being in a poor position on the court makes for poor decision making, fosters lack of shot control and puts you in crisis mode. Being in a poor position can also put you in a state of panic. It can increase your chances of making the wrong decision or a shot that you did not intend to make (such as a ball intended for the opponent on the baseline being hit to the opponent at the net because you are standing in no-mans land). Conversely, being in a good position on the court allows you to see the court better by noticing where your opponents are (are they themselves in good position/bad position? and where should the ball be hit?). It also gives you confidence and increases your probability of making the correct decision. Being in the right position enables you to recognize and take advantage of opportunities (such as poaching and when to finish the point).

With so many great events to choose from in the next few months, all you have to do is call us in the pro shop and let us sign you up.

At the same time we will also host a professional doubles tournament featuring many top notch local pros in the area. SPA AND FITNESS By Michael Tompkins Tompkins, Director of Spa & Fitness With season in full swing, our staff has been diligently working towards preparing for the grand opening of our new state-of- the art facility. As we draw near to the conclusion of our expansion, I would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during this transition. Our mission from inception has been to present Broken Sound Club as the trendsetter in country club living, setting a standard of excellence that all others look to emulate. With this objective as our goal, we are presenting to the club a new full service spa, featuring new spa lines and services combining cutting edge technology and spa industry leading treatments. These innovative products are only offered exclusively at high end spas around the world. We will also be offering a new full body treatment menu in our seven treatment rooms, as well as facials, massages and sunless tanning. A delightful new addition to our new spa is a massage suite where couples are able to enjoy a relaxing spa treatment together. Separate from the spa will be our new salon, where we will be offering your favorite manicure and pedicure services, blow dry hair bar, make-up artist, waxing services and a full service barber. We are also excited to begin our partnership
with Boca Raton Regional Hospital as our new in-house Physical Therapy providers. We will also offer various medical services to our Broken Sound community in our new medical treatment room. The opening of the fitness center highlighted a small expansion in the fitness area. We are excited to open our new designated spin room and pilates studios as well as our two new group exercise studios. Our pilates studio will host a variety of new pilates apparatus equipment where members may have a private, semiprivate or small group class for a nominal fee. The Spin Studio will be fantastic, a must come and see and participate.

Leigh-Ann has a Certification in Spa Management with the International Spa Association, and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a focus in Hospitality and Tourism Management. Leigh-Ann has received accolades in the spa industry for her proven success in creating a five star spa experience and for fostering creative and productive teams.

New Trainer- Lauren Moreno Lauren has always had a passion for fitness and adventure. She believes in living a healthy, balanced lifestyle and stresses the importance of proper nutrition, exercise and mindfulness to all her clients. Lauren believes life is meant to be lived to the fullest, and in doing this, true balance can be achieved! She is an adventurer at heart and has been skydiving, glacier hiking, rock climbing, dog sledding as well as many other active pursuits. Lauren is certified through The Fitness Institute, The American College of Sports Medicine and The American Council on Exercise and also holds SCW certifications as a Group Fitness and Group Strength Instructor. Lauren loves her career and especially enjoys sharing her knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm for fitness with others!

Hadassah’s Centennial and the Opening of the New Hospital It was a privilege to attend our Centennial Convention and Hospital dedication in Israel. Jerusalem hosted almost 2000 Hadassah members, associates and some family members. It was especially heart warming to see multigenerational members attending this once in a life time happening.
We must help fund the research that has already resulted in breakthroughs in stem cell therapy and many other areas.
We participated in interesting, informative and varied programs. I spent my first day with other nurses and physicians learning about various research projects taking place at Hadassah. We were privileged to meet some exceptional people and participate in honoring them for all they have done through the years for Hadassah. One of those was 92 year old Judith Stein Friedman. She is one of the first graduates of the Nursing school later becoming its Dean. She still comes to work in her office at the hospital daily.
Hadassah empowers women both in the U.S. and abroad by providing education and health initiatives, aiding people in making appropriate medical decisions.
The official dedication of the hospital was held at the convention center in Jerusalem. We were welcomed and thanked most eloquently by President Shimon Peres.

The hospital is magnificent, both in its architecture and function. It is very light with many windows and indoor gardens. It is a state of the art facility, probably one of the most modern in the world. The structure is 15 stories above ground and 6 below ground.

Oh my, I can’t believe it is the middle of February and I haven’t had to clear my Boca driveway of snow even once. Seriously, the season seems to rushing by. I am glad to report that we had a very nice profit realized from our five day Caribbean cruise and are looking into doing another one. The football survivor pool produced fourteen survivors. We help connect our children to Israel via our Young Judea programs. Hadassah provides educational programs for High School students, on breast and testicular cancer screening We have much on our plate, but, I know that we will continue to rise to the challenge. Women’s Club This season has been wonderful so far, with huge crowds and great speakers. Larry Strickler, a Catskills tummler, gave us the history of the Borscht Belt area, and Dr. Joyce Saltman filled in for Ronelle Delmont and was hysterical, as always. She brought non-stop laughter and lessons on the health benefits of being “optimistic”. The demand for our out-of-club trips continues to be great. We ran another trip to “WhiteSpace” art museum to accommodate all those who were not able to get in last year. The trip to the Maltz Jupiter Theater was a delight. “Music Man” was as professional as one would see on Broadway and everyone is asking us to find another play at this theater. Our tour and lunch on board Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas was delightful. Only one trip remains and that is to the Fairchild Tropical Gardens in Coral Gables on March 1st which is already sold out. We still have 2 more wonderful luncheon meetings . BUTTERFLY AND GARDEN CLUB Lately, have your thoughts turned to, how does a Poor Man’s Umbrella plant, keep a traveler dry, or what do Capuchin monkeys look like, or was there really a Scientific Expansion for a particular tillansia from Ecuador to Costa Rica? If you answered yes, you should have been at our Feb, 6th meeting! Ken Marks, our fabulous speaker, showed all 70, of us the most beautiful photos, of very remote areas in Costa Rica. After the speaker, we raffled off over 101 unusual and unique plants. They were not the Home Depot variety. Pat Levine donated many of her fantastic and rare bromeliads from her extensive collection. Butterfly plants were on hand for purchase. On Monday March 18, at 4:30pm, we will be given a rare chance to tour Pat Levine’s garden. She lives at 2122 NW 60th Circle, in Fairway Bend. Pat, we are coming to learn,-teach us. If you want to join us afterward for 6:00pm dinner at the club , call me (9946747) by Feb. 28, so I can make the reservations by March 4. No reservations required for the tour - just come. Saturday, March 16, we are going to Butterfly World, for a class and private guided tour. We will depart the club at 9:00am. I will need your check for $16.00, to get our low group rate. Wednesday, April 10, at 4:30pm, we will tour Barbara Pisik’s professionally designed and planted butterfly gardens.
