PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE In my last letter to you, I mentioned t h at t h e B o a rd of Governors is planning a retreat to review matters that are vital to the Club’s continued p ro s p e r i t y a n d sustainability. I stated that this retreat is the first ever in the Club’s 16 years of existence since it took over from ARVIDA. I would like to elaborate on that statement and provide you with more information about the purpose and content of this upcoming retreat. For three days in late September 2016, the members of the Board along with professional consultants will meet at the Marriott in Boca Raton. The retreat will be held off premises so the participants won’t be distracted with the day to day operations of the Club and so the member’s use of the Club’s facilities will not be disturbed. Each day, we expect to spend ten uninterrupted hours dissecting, analyzing or inspecting complete studies, reviews and examinations of the Club’s policies, structures (legal and membership) and operations. Our labors will include a ‘no-holds-barred’, ‘no-sacredcows’ approach to answer the questions and concerns posed by you, the membership. Once the work of the retreat is completed, the Board will expand on the

concepts and recommendations stemming from the retreat for timely implementation at the Club. Why conduct a retreat now? 1. The Club has been operating under the same bylaws, rules and regulations since it took over operations from ARVIDA in 2000. 2. This Club has grown and expanded its facilities beyond what a Board could have imagined in 2000. 3. While most of the bylaws, rules and regulations have stood the test of time, a complete examination is now in order. We will be covering many topics, such as: 1. Major issues regarding funding future growth, the care and maintenance of our facilities, and the caliber of the products, services and amenities provided by the Club. 2. How does the Club contend with current trends that threaten its very wellbeing? 3. Subtle shifts in the demographic composition of the Club. 4. Current structure of the governance of the Club. Some members have asked why spend the money on a retreat? We are investing in ourselves. You, as members of this Club, have expressed to both management and the Board, a desire to make the Club better. At the same time, you have asked us to limit annual dues increases. One of the key areas of concern that we

Save The Date

www.brokensoundclub.org

Page 5

will focus on is how to provide more and exceed the expectations of our membership. Each year, the Board and management are challenged with managing Club expenses while improving upon services and amenities. From the Board’s standpoint, conducting this retreat is the fiscally responsible thing to do. We are gathering in an all-out, 3-day effort to seek solutions to important Club issues. The Board is mindful that we must conduct this retreat in the most prudent and least expensive way possible. The assembled participants, with the exception of some of the professional consultants, are attending the retreat without any monetary compensation, all in an effort to provide our membership with an even better lifestyle experience at Broken Sound. We will be guided by the country club industry’s most esteemed consultants. This is a unique opportunity to recognize who and what Broken Sound Club is today. The single most important goal of this retreat is to make certain that for many years to come, our Club can grow and thrive. To attain that goal, your Board must plan for the future NOW! In subsequent messages, I will summarize for you the conclusions derived from the retreat. continued on page 8

Scott Feller PGA, Director of Golf Many people ask what made me join the staff at Broken Sound. The answer is simple, “It is the people”. Here at Broken Sound we are in the member business and must strive to take care of every member every time. My goal is to work hard with our staff, committees and members to ensure that we provide a culture the members deserve. The club is more than a recreational facility; it is a place where community happens. It is a place to meet new people, enjoy the facilities and socialize with friends. Most important it is a place to feel welcomed. Whatever your reason, I thank you for choosing Broken Sound as your place.

OLD COURSE NEWS

by Jeff Waber, Director of Golf

With the summer growing season nearing its end and the fall approaching, we have been working diligently to prepare and deliver a tremendous upcoming season for you here at The Old Course. We are excited to see everybody after their summer getaways. The golf professionals have enjoyed numerous summer Ladies’ Pro Ams at multiple venues. This is new and we encourage all the ladies to join us during the summer months. The pro am is low key, casual golf with a luncheon to follow, and we had a blast with our members each Wednesday we played. See our pictures below. The Old Course Men’s and Ladies’ Golf Associations have a great lineup of events this upcoming season. The opening day for the men’s league will be Monday, November 7th. The opening day for the ladies league will be Thursday, November 3rd. In addition to the full schedule of both men’s and women’s league events, there will be mixer events as well as two single day men’s and women’s member guests. The Mixed Member Guest will be held on Sunday January 8, 2017. The Men’s Member Guest

Jeff Waber, Director of Golf 241-6893 will be played on Monday, March 20th & Tuesday March 21st, 2017. The Women’s Member Guest will be Wednesday, March 8th & Thursday, March 9th, 2017. This Fall and Spring we will be hosting our second annual “Fit N’ Feed” Demo Day. This will be a special day where we bring in 5 or more vendors, accompanied with a BBQ inside the range area. Featured vendors will include PING, Titleist, Callaway, Cobra, TaylorMade, and others. It will be a fun and exciting day to have some food and drinks while trying out all of the new equipment for the year. The golf course is in great condition and with a busy season ahead of us, we would like to ask each member to help fix ball marks, rake bunkers and fill divots to help keep the course in peek shape. The back driving range has added a new practice putting green and fairway bunker area. These have been mapped out and will be ready when you return this fall. We look forward to seeing everyone and welcome all of you back who have not been with us for the summer months. Please share any thoughts, comments or suggestions you may have with us and should there be anything we can do to enhance your Old Course experience, please let us know.

Jeff teamed up with Marcy Haupt, Robin Rapoport and Nancie Flaxman. We had a blast despite the muddy conditions, and heat index of 108 !!! Our team shot -10 under 62 and tied for third place.

Closed on Mondays from May to early October. Pro Shop and Bag Room open 7:00am-3:00pm. There will be NO SHUTTLE service on days the Club Course or Old Course are closed.

PRO TIP

How To Hit Longer Off The Tee Everybody wants to hit it longer off the tee. The long ball is a very effective shot to have when taking on the links and shooting better scores. Hitting big drives down the fairway gives you a shorter approach shot into the green resulting in more greens hit in regulation, along with a closer proximity to the hole. Now we all know that we may not quite reach the distances that Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, and Bubba Watson are accustomed to, but we can certainly improve on our own tee ball by using a few techniques that these long bombers do consistently. Here are a few of these techniques that will help you hit it farther off the tee…

SHORT GAME Robin Rapoport, Nancie Flaxman, Marcy Haupt Wednesday August 10th, Jeff Waber PGA and Rick Sutton PGA invited 6 Old Course Ladies to another well received pro am.

Labor Day Pool Party Monday, September 1

Old Course Pro Shop 994-8505 Hours: Mon - Sun 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM

1) Wider Stance = More power through stabilization.

Rick teamed up with Anky Koudjis, Iris Lund and Joan Sandler. They too had a good day and tied us at -10. Due to a USGA match of cards and back 9 total comparison. Rick’s Team edged us out for 3rd place. Great day for all of us and we hope to play 2 more Pro Lady events this summer. Breakers Palm Beach, and IBIS will be next up.

Marcy Haupt, Robin Rapoport, Nancie Flaxman, Anky Koudjis, Iris Lund and Joan Sandler

Hitting it longer all starts with a good foundation. Try widening your stance a bit more than usual in order to support a harder/faster rotation through the ball.

2) “Tee it high and let it fly!”

Teeing the ball up a bit higher increases the launch angle of the ball off the clubface resulting in more carry distance.

3) Swing UP on the golf ball.

www.brokensoundclub.org

Page 7

Many golfers have a tendency to hit DOWN or DELOFT the club-head at impact. Try incorporating more of a sweeping motion through impact or swinging UP though the ball. This will result in more lift of the golf ball, resulting in a higher launch angle and less spin.

continued from page 5 One last point. The Club is in excellent condition. We are financially solvent with incredible up-to-date facilities, venues and amenities. Our home sales have remained healthy and constant. The overall lifestyle experience of a Broken Sound Club member is second to none. As the summer winds down, I want to point out that the Club continues to be busy year round. The old perception that the Club slows down out of season (May through September) is not valid any more. This summer, all of our venues were actively used by more members than ever before.

When you have a moment, take a look at the driving range for the West Course. Now that it is re-grassed with Celebration turf, damage to the driving range turf should be minimal. This is the same grass that the Old Course installed several years ago. For those of us who recently had the occasion to enjoy a round of golf at the Old Course, there is great appreciation for the vast improvement of the fairways and rough. In fact, both courses look great and a thanks goes out to Shannon Easter and his entire crew for keeping our courses in such top-notch condition. As you visit the Club’s many venues, please take a moment to realize that our staff is working daily to keep all our facilities in five-star condition. Every day, they tend to the condition of our Tennis and Pickle Ball courts, and provide courteous service at our restaurants. Our Aquatic Facility, the Fitness Center and the Spa are kept up to the highest standards. This Club is staffed by wonderful people whose only concern is to make certain that your experience at Broken Sound is exceptional. I hope that you take a moment to express your thanks to our staff. The annual southern migration of our Broken Sound members to Boca Raton begins in earnest around the beginning of October. We look forward to their safe return and welcome them back. I look forward to seeing you around the Club. Regards, Nate Metzger, President Board of Governors

FOOD AND BEVERAGE Tim Nelson,

By Lorant Botha, Director of Catering

Bigger, Bolder, Brighter

Director of Food & Beverage

The events that we create at Broken Sound resonate far beyond our fellow Boca country clubs, and we pride ourselves on numerous inquiries from other clubs in regards to our events. This is a result of the work, expertise and imagination that is key in creating any memorable event, and we pride ourselves in ‘thinking outside the box’. Please keep your eyes open for the new Dining Schedule due to be released early October. Once it is complete, it will be emailed to all the members, posted on the Broken Sound website and distributed to all of the dining locations and receptionists. New and exciting features, combined with well-established dining events, will be ready to impress you all over again in Broken Sound Club’s food and beverage venues.

With Executive Chef Joe Longo

For those of you who are slowly returning to sunny Florida, we would like to wish you a warm welcome back to Broken Sound Club. Wherever your destination, we hope you enjoyed your summer months as much as we did. It’s been a summer like no other, as our dining counts remained high, and Cooking Classes and Chef’s Table Dinners continued to be a success.

During the summer we have been busy preparing for the upcoming season, from exciting member events to lavish private parties, and we are confident you will be pleased with the outcome. In the midst of a hot summer, we always take time to regroup and take a glance at how we can become more efficient and cutting edge. This summer and upcoming fall represent a time of renewal for the Food & Beverage Department, and it is with great excitement that we look towards the upcoming season that is promising to be one of the best ones yet. We are currently preparing for our Member meet Member and New Year’s Eve Galas, as well as our Golf and Card Member Guest events, just to name a few. This year we are going bigger and bolder for our themed events, striving to always make the impossible, possible. So get ready to embrace that “we’re all mad here” at the Alice in Wonderlandthemed Member meet Member reception coming up on November 19th, and be spoiled like kings and queens at the lavish New Year’s Eve Gala on December 31st.

Tips & Strategies For Fun & Successful Tennis

The Game Plan – Do you have one?

Having a game plan established before you hit the ball will give you comfort and confidence when executing your shots. It is also a great way to understand what is working well during a match or what adjustments you may need to make as you are playing.

There are two instances in particular when it is absolutely critical to have a game plan: When returning a serve

Before you hit the return, know where you are going to hit the ball (i.e. cross court, down the line, lob, or short). It is also imperative to know where you would like to be positioned after the return: Are you going to go to the net or are you going to stay behind the baseline? The starting position of most players when returning serve is in no-man’s land. Although this area is at times a place where you have no choice but to hit balls from, it is necessary to move out of this position immediately, either forward toward the net or backward behind the baseline. By having a game plan when returning the serve, you can position yourself favorably! When hitting your serve:

Decide ahead of time where you would like to place your serve in the box. Know if you are going to serve into the body, to the forehand, or to the backhand. You should also know what you are going to do after you hit the serve: Are you going to the net (serve & volley), or are you staying back behind the baseline? Believe it or not the serve dictates the return. Knowing that you have the power to set yourself up successfully should mean that you never hit your serve without a thoughtful game plan!

All those interested in competing in the Grand Slam Tennis League should contact Greg in the pro shop. If you have never played or want to improve your position from your team last year, you must let Greg in tennis know before the season begins. Broken Sound Tennis will be a host site for another National Junior Tennis tournament September

Exciting new things are happening at the Moonstone Spa and there is no better time than now to start taking care of yourself! September brings a celebration of one of our most necessary creatures. We need our bees, so let’s do everything we can to save them and help them thrive on this Earth. September is National Honey Month! Honey Is Beauty Through the ages honey has been used therapeutically in many cultures and has many skin and hair benefits. Honey can help moisturize, prevent aging and purify the skin of bacteria. It is loaded with nutrients, antioxidants, and healing compounds. Honey stimulates cellular regeneration, drawing out the moisture of dead skin cells and hydrating the new skin underneath. Raw honey is ideal; it hasn’t been heat-treated or pasteurized as it contains more active phytonutrient antioxidants and enzymes for enhanced benefits. September Featured Treatment “Bee Beautiful Facial” In support of our pollinators, during the month of September Broken Sound will feature a Honey Facial that incorporates honey that is produced at Broken Sound. This facial is based on the healing properties of honey and will leave your skin nourished and glowing. A gentle, brightening exfoliation is followed by a Honey, Collagen and Hyaluronic Acid Mask that will soothe the skin and promote firmness. Includes a hand and foot exfoliation using a hand crafted scrub made with our own local honey. The result will be a smoother and more radiant complexion. 60 Minutes $79

Chuck Niessen, Fitness Director Titleist Performance Institute educates golfers and fitness trainers on the body/swing connection through its TPI certified educational program. First, there is a complete fitness evaluation, including sixteen movement screens that analyze biomechanical issues in stability and mobility within your body. Then clients are taken to the driving range for swing analysis. A full report is completed based upon twelve characteristic swing defaults with

correctional exercises. These exercises concentrate on glute and core strength while highlighting thoracic mobility to lower the golf score while addressing body issues to help prevent injury and increase flexibility. This year the fitness center is teaming up with golf to help its members improve their golf game and minimize injuries. Contact Chuck Niessen, Fitness Manager and TPI trainer, at the Fitness Center. We have three TPI trainers currently working at Broken Sound Fitness Center, and starting the end of September we will also have Donald Patrick Corona, a TPI-certified trainer and twelve-handicap golfer. Looking forward to helping members stay healthy and competitive on the golf course.

GRIEVANCE A grievance was filed by a club member alleging that another club member (now a former resident) had publicly berated her in the cardroom over the quality of her play causing her emotional distress and humiliation. After considering the recommendation of the BSC Grievance Committee, the BSC Board of Governors banned the former member from the use of all club facilities as a guest (other than at a private function) for one year and from all cardroom facilities for two years. In addition a letter of apology was required.

HADASSAH the power of women who DO

We have had an exciting year thus far. All of us work to fulfill our motto “The Women Who Do.” The efforts of Hadassah in advocating against Human Trafficking have garnered praise from congressional members. We are a long time partner in the fight for equal pay for women. Hadassah is on the forefront to have medical research include women subjects. Women may present with different symptoms than men, and respond differently to treatments. “Research in Service to Humanity” is one of Hadassah’s pillars. Our Wetsman Tower Hospital offers physician scientists the unique opportunity to translate basic research to patient care. We are

at the forefront of stem cell research, with several phase 2 human trials here and in Israel.. The staff of the hospital consider their work as a “Bridge to Peace.” The staff and patients are made up of Jews, Muslims and Christians and all are treated with the same level of compassionate care. We encourage you to join us for education, fun and friendship at any and all of our programs. Become a part of the solution. Repair the world. Shana Tova , Shalom, Judith Needle, President December 5- Monday 7:30 pm Jewish Film series. A look back and sneak preview of 2017. December 8- Thursday 10:00 am Card Party Boutiques and Brunch.
