For The
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As discussed in my previous letters to the membership, the Board continues to develop strategies and implement initiatives that enable the Club to continue to grow and further improve the services, facilities and ambience it provides to the membership. These, and future, strategies and initiatives are consistent with the overall vision, mission and core values of the Club as defined by our Boards of Governors since the turnover of the Club in November 2000 from Arvida. The Club’s mission, vision and core values encapsulate the Club’s raison d’etre as an organization; that is what we see ourselves as and want to be. In effect, they define our Club so that all constituencies, internal and external, are clearly aware of who and what we are, what we provide and plan to provide to our membership. It is important that the vision, mission and core values be articulated at this time as they are the building blocks for future Board discussions, plans and subsequent strategies and initiatives. They also set the basis for our annual operating budget, annual capital budget, the five year capital plan and the development of the Club’s first strategic plan. The following is a summary of our Club’s vision, mission and core values.
Vision The Club’s Vision focuses on the future; it is intended to serve as a source of inspiration and motivation. It describes the future of the Club and the future of the industry in which the Club hopes to effect change; our Vision is: To be the most desirable, established private residential club community in South Florida, for those with a discerning taste, diverse interests and passions seeking a prestigious, yet friendly, club experience with five-star hospitality, lifestyle amenities, sports
and recreation, and personalized services with a wide range of interactive signature members-only opportunities.
Mission The Club’s Mission concentrates on the present; it defines the Club’s critical processes and the desired level of performance. It may be found on every business card of Broken Sound Management; our Mission is: To meet or exceed the expectations of discerning residents, associations and professional organizations by continuously delivering incomparable five-star club hospitality, lifestyle amenities, and services with a wide range of enviable signature members-only interactive social, sports and recreation, fitness, spa, dining and entertainment opportunities while remaining market relevant and fiscally responsible.
Core Values Core values are the strategic beliefs of the Club that are fundamentally important in the decision making process of the Club. It defines our character and helps preserve what is special about Broken Sound. Our core values are the guiding principles that dictate our behavior and action. They help our members and employees know what is fundamentally right and what is wrong; they help the Club determine if we are on the right path and fulfilling our mission and objectives. They create an unwavering and unchanging guide; our core values are: Service – Take every opportunity to provide excellent service and facilities to the membership. Strive to be the best in everything that is done. Provide the ambiance, amenities, stimulating and entertaining activities, events and programs for all members, their families and guests. Integrity – Strive to be fair, honest and consistent with the members in all interactions across all membership categories. Respect – Listen to and respect the opinions of members and staff.
Trust – Provide an atmosphere of trust. Put the interest of the Club before the interest of individual members or staff. Communications – In order to further develop the Club’s relationships with, and sustain the support of, the Club’s constituencies (i.e. members, prospective members, employees, the Boca community, and government and industry personnel) the Club should endeavor to deliver quality communications in a timely manner. Nothing is more central to building a vibrant and active membership and greater community relations than strategically managed communications.
Entertainment Costume Contest Candyland Games Dinner Buffet
Innovation – Create a culture where new ideas are fostered that help meet the core values of the Club through more effective services, products, processes, and technology. Social responsibility – Support local charities financially and by providing volunteer support. We are successful when we all come together to use our good fortune to benefit the lives of our members, neighbors and the greater community.
Broken Sound Club Friday, October 31 Environmental responsibility – Create a culture that RSVP Carl of2416877 is sensitive to and respectful the environment. Illustrate that a club, its members and its employees can come together to create an eco-friendly environment. Financial responsibility – While providing our membership with the best in services and facilities the dues, fees and assessments that our members pay (the “Member’s Operating Costs”) should be as low as the Board can reasonably make them while maintaining the value of our homes, assets and the fiscal well-being of the Club. We shall strive to keep our Member’s Operating Costs equal to or lower in most membership categories than our competitors. In future communiques, we will discuss the strategies we developed and the initiatives we will be implementing that will further strengthen the Club, improve our members experience and further improve the Club’s financial strength. CLUB COURSE NEWS by Scott Feller, PGA Director of Golf - Club Course
Sun and Tue 7:00 AM - 4:30 PM Mon, Wed thru Sat 7:00 AM - dusk
The 2015 golf season has been off to a great start. We’ve had a fantastic couple of months of weather to begin the New Year. The Club Course has seen a spike in number of rounds played as well as a high number of participants in club and league events. The 2015 Men’s and Ladies’ Member Guest Events were once again a tremendous success. Both events combined touted over 475 participants. Players flew in from all over the country to experience the beautiful decorations and fantastic course conditions only the Broken Sound Club Course could offer. Participants enjoyed the many on-course contests along with the food and drinks served throughout the day. Following play everyone enjoyed an amazing spread in the dining room during the awards banquet. The Member Guest Committee Members should be commended for their hard work. The Club Course Nine and Dine events have continued to be a big attraction. The last Nine and Dine event of the season will be held on March 30th. Be sure to sign up early to guarantee your place in the ever popular event. Our BSWWGA 18 hole Ladies held their annual charity event in support of “Place of Hope”. All
participants enjoyed a fun on-course format followed by lunch and a raffle in our Member’s Grille. Thank you to all who participated and donated towards this great organization. In February, Titleist brought its ball fitting van to Broken Sound. It was a great opportunity for our members to test different balls and learn which ball is best for them. Titleist used its Tour fitting technology to analyze each participants swing and then advised them on which ball provided the best results for each individual. It was a fun learning experience for all who participated. As the winter season progresses it is hard to believe we are already looking ahead to our Men’s and Ladies’ Leagues closing day events upcoming in April. With fantastic participation in each of our leagues this season we can only expect a full field and fabulous time. Be sure to sign up early on Chelsea for your respective leagues closing day as they fill up very quickly. I would like to remind all Club Members that golf course etiquette is an integral part of the game of golf. If anyone has any questions about rules or golf course etiquette, the Golf Professional Staff is ready to assist you. The golf course is in tremendous condition and we ask you to please take pride by fixing your ball marks, raking the bunkers, and filling your divots.

Grievances were filed by four (4) staff members of the Spa & Fitness Center against a member. The grievances concerned multiple acts of inappropriate behavior regarding the conditions maintained by the staff during a fitness class. After reviewing the statements filed by the parties and conducting a hearing at which the Grievance Committee heard testimony from the staff members, the Grievance Committee concluded that the member’s conduct was both disruptive and disrespectful. After considering the recommendation of the Grievance Committee, the Club’s Board of Governors decided to suspend the member’s privileges to use all Club facilities for a period of two months. The member was also required to submit a suitable written apology to the staff members and to another member. On appeal to the Board of Governors, however, the suspension was modified and shortened on condition that the member submit a suitable letter of apology to the Board. The member declined to do so – thus the two-month suspension was enforced.

CATERING NEWS
FOOD AND BEVERAGE
by Lorant Botha Director of Catering Working in the Catering industry is not every person’s cup of tea. Tough skin is a major requirement, or is developed with endurance. Often times, I meet event planners who have decided to join the industry after orchestrating their own celebrations. Those educated in hospitality have the same limited rate of success. The best thing educators in this ever-changing field can do is to design internships for the students where they can fully experience the day to day essentials of catering. Beyond the glitz and the glam, there is lots of hard work. Luckily, many of our servers are part of superior education programs that include internships. The hands-on training they receive at venues such as Broken Sound Club is priceless, as no manual, no audio CD will fill them in on the requirements and behind-doors reality of our industry. Beyond the fabulous façade of an event, there is thorough and detailed preparation and fast-paced delivery. Catering is certainly more than foodservice at Broken Sound Club. It means elaborate planning, guidance, passion, sweat and sometimes even tears. I can proudly say that our club is and has been the
Tim Nelson, talk of the town for all the right reasons. The events that we create resonate far beyond our fellow Boca country clubs, but as far as neighboring counties and states. The year started off right with the breathtaking Cinderella themed New Year’s Eve Celebration and the super fun Tennis Dinner Dance. As a consequence of the most recent Kinky Boots themed Club Course Golf Ladies Member Guest and the Moroccan themed Ladies Card Member Guest, we have received numerous inquiries on what we have done, as other clubs would like to duplicate the event for their own members. This year’s club galas, as well as private events, made Broken Sound shine proudly amongst an elite tier of clubs, and make our club desirable not just for parties, but also a community people want to enjoy and pride themselves.

Many times we’ve been asked “What do you guys do over there?” The answer has always been the same: “We think outside the box.” But it recently dawned on me that what we do differently from other caterers is that we are not here to just hype and excite people over what they are about to embark on, but most importantly we genuinely get excited with them. And we promise not to rest on our laurels, but to continue to challenge ourselves and keep raising that bar higher and higher. Until next time! Live loud!

Tips & Strategies For Fun & Successful Tennis
love volley
Is the opponents’s short return of serve killing you? Every time I serve the ball he/ she always hits the return of serve short cross court and I can’t get it. What do I do?” Does this sound familiar? At least once a month I am presented with this scenario and asked what to do.
The first order business would be to determine where you are serving the ball. Pay attention to whether you are serving the ball to the opponent’s forehand or backhand. If you recognize that after you are serving the ball to the forehand side and the return is hit short, then serve to the backhand side or vice versa. Maybe the opponent can only hit the short return cross court from one side. “But, I don’t have that much control over my serve.” The solution? Practice! Getting out there and hitting hundreds of serves weekly is not something that most of us have the time to do or (let’s be honest) even want to do. You can, however, when you are warming up your serve and when you are playing, pick a target, whether it’s your opponent’s forehand or backhand, and attempt to hit the ball to either spot.
Another tactic, in the standard doubles position, would be to move in one step in front of the baseline immediately after you serve the ball to the opponent and they hit the ball from the side that you have recognized to be the side from which they are hitting the ball short. This is a risky play because if the opponent hits the ball deep you can be caught in a position where you are hitting a defensive shot. However this can give you that one step you might need to get to the ball sooner. “I have taken my two steps in but still can’t get to the ball.” If you have difficulty placing your serve, and you have taken two steps in and are not able to get to the short ball and the aforementioned options are not a solution, then playing Australian might be helpful. This is a scenario that you see the pros do from time to time. In this set up, the server stands closer to the center line of the court and the server’s partner stands at the net, but on the same side as the partner serving. This position will force the returner to hit the return differently, down the line or lob and if the ball is hit short it’s not moving away from you, the server, it’s moving toward you. This look can also confuse your opponents and put them out of their comfort zone.

Leigh-Ann Davidson, Spa Director Spring is a great time to start or enhance your wellness program and eating healthy and exercising are the obvious ways that you can achieve your goals. However, there are additional components to overall wellness that you shouldn’t overlook. Do you consider a regular Massage a luxury or a necessity? Studies show that it is not only a necessity in reducing stress, but it can also help you take your fitness plan to the next level. Massage has several benefits that can directly influence your ability to control or lose weight. Improved circulation and the supply of nutrition to the muscles - Massage maximizes the supply of nutrients and oxygen though increased blood flow, which helps the muscles to grow and burn more calories. Massage improves your muscles’ range of motion and flexibility - This allows them to maintain maximum power and performance and burn the maximum number of calories in the process. It also reduces muscle soreness during periods of recovery.
FITNESS
Massage helps to shorten the recovery time needed between your workouts - Waste products such as lactic acid build up in muscles during and after exercise. Increased circulation to these muscles helps to eliminate toxic debris buildup caused by waste products. Massage can directly aid in fat loss - Massage is thought to be able to burst the fat capsule in subcutaneous tissue so that the fat exudes and becomes absorbed. Combined with proper nutrition and exercise, massage can actually help in fat loss. Regular massage is just as important as regular workouts and correct nutrition in any fitness and weight loss program, which is great news for those of us who thought that exercising and losing weight was all hard work! Weight loss is all about leading a balanced lifestyle and massage is an essential part of any balanced lifestyle.

Doug Rotondi, Fitness Director As our season comes to an end, many residents break free from their traditional fitness programs as they travel more and spend less time with set schedules. It is important to maintain a strength & conditioning program and keep up with healthy eating habits throughout the year. March 9 “Radio Days” (1987) Radio Days gifts us this brief, enchanted period of the radio as Woody Allen remembers it. A perfectly executed hilarious, deeply touching film.
April 13 “Winslow Boy” (1999) Based on the true story of the trial of a young boy for theft that became a national spectacle in England in 1910. COMMUNITY BSWWGA Supports Foster Children via Home Tour and Golf Tournament
In January nearly 100 women, members of the West Women’s Golf Association, organized 2 fund-raising events to support the foster children at Place of Hope at The Haven Campus (POHATH). Led by Marsha Small, they toured 5 Broken Sound homes and visited the POHATH facility and each participant donated a minimum of $25.00. For Mrs. Small’s birthday party, in lieu of gifts, guests donated to POHATH. In addition, POHATH was their charity of choice for their Feb. 10th golf tournament.
Book Group
The very successful 2014/15 season of the Book Group included discussions of best-selling and award-winning novels and attracted both new and returning members. The group above met in January for a stimulating review of Someone by Alice McDermott, led by Robin Gilman. Each session includes a brief introduction and group discussion. All Broken Sound residents are welcome to attend. Contact Judy Friedman (997-8154, otjudy@comcast.net) or Jane Mandell (998-8662) for further information.
Charities For Now. For Life. Welcome Spring with us as we celebrate Purim, the holiday which saw a Jewish Woman named Esther (Hadassah, her Hebrew name) save her people from an evil Persian tyrant, a holiday that demonstrates clearly the power we women can wield. Some of the areas Hadassah is working on include advocating for children and women, and we are proud to thank the legislators who helped renew the “Child Care and Development Grant ” as Hadassah continues the momentum to address the epidemic of human trafficking. In addition, Curriculum Watch has become an important area for Hadassah advocacy and deals with school systems, publishing houses, and communities to ensure standards of education are historically accurate and ethnically and culturally unbiased. On the Medical front it was recently announced that a
BOCA FRIENDS FOR CANCER RESEARCH
Boca Friends has a lot of very exciting news to share with all our members and friends. We have just completed a very successful card party thanks to all of you and your guests. It was a wonderful turnout. We have some very different things being planned for the next one. As most of you know, Boca Friends is a chapter of the PAP Corps for Cancer Research. Every Monday and Wednesday we have a table in the ladies card room where we sell all occasion cards, the sale of which goes to Boca Friends. We have raised a significant dollar amount already this year. Kudos to the wonderful women who give of themselves to sell these cards, they are Linda Shapiro, Joyce Siegel, Joan Bettinger and our Long Island connection Diane Levine. If you need a special occasion plaque or commemorative trophy see any of them for help.
Hadassah researcher has identified a gene in Glioblastoma the most common and most deadly form of brain cancer. Our upcoming events: our popular Lunch and Learn Events continue on March 13 at 11:00 am - “The Danish Solution” a film on the rescue of the Jews of Denmark will be screened; join us for a most entertaining event Tuesday evening, March 17 at 7:30 pm - Transvestite Entertainers, Debauchers Bingo and Delectable Desserts; on April 17th, Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Shashi Kusuma, will address plastic surgery advances. Also, mark your calendars for Thursday, May 14th, as we deal the cards for our Spring Fling Card Party, Boutiques and Brunch. As always we invite everyone to join us at all our events and bring your friends. Thank you to our hard working board and members, and special thanks to Broken Sound management and staff for all their hard work on our behalf. Shalom, Judith Needle, President
March brings us to our original musical spoof called “Once Upon A Couch Part 2” This was so well received five years ago that we have written a sequel. The dates are March 29th and 30th in the ladies card room at 7:30pm. John Crean will be in the play again. Desserts will be served. $40 per ticket, reserved seating. Get your groups together and contact Joyce Siegel, 561-982-8819. If you would like to compliment the cast with an ad in our Playbill, they start at $25 for ¼ page. Our final event of the season, April 25th, is “Black and White” gala. Very informal with great music, entertainment and surprises. Please mark your calendars and save the date. For further information call Patsy Tischio or Nan Pope (they are in the club book). If you would like to join Boca Friends the dues are $35 annual. Please stop any of us for more information or to volunteer. We will welcome you with open arms. See you at the show. Paula Karp and Marilyn Levine
Your Social Committee at Work In addition to leading many of the clubs at Broken Sound and assisting members with card games, members of our Social Committee are also involved in local charities, and we would like to recognize some of these members for their wonderful work. Carol Hoffer organizes donations to Boca Helping Hands, a local organization that helps those in need by distributing hot meals and packaged food to qualified, needy Palm Beach county residents – 53,000 hot meals served in 2014, 6000 hot meals delivered to the homebound, food to 1000 needy children and over 65,000 bags of groceries delivered. For every dollar they receive 94 cents is given toward their programs. Eileen Batt set up a knitting class, Magic Hands, for members in 2013 and then joined another group knitting caps for preemies and children cancer patients. Since then, approximately 200 caps have been made and donated to local hospitals such as
Boca Regional, Chris Evert Children’s Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Hospital. The group, including Dolores Lurie, Dotty Segal, Sandi Tucker, Claudia Hescheles, Nancy Kurlander, Susan Nagler, Helen Moffich, Arlene Ehrlich and Barbara Levy, donates a great deal of time and materials needed to make the caps and are much appreciated by the pediatric departments of these hospitals. Maxine McLennan and Gail Weinstein recently became involved with The Place of Hope at the Haven Campus, a facility serving as a safe haven for children in need of a place to live. Their first building houses eight boys age 8-17 and they, along with the Social Committee, purchased new clothing and other essentials for all the boys in December and helped make their holiday season a happy and memorable one. They will continue their involvement and see to additional needs of these children. (See also separate ladies golf comment for the same facility.)

WOMEN’S CLUB Boy! What a year this has been! In January we were entertained by a group of actors from the Faulk Center for Group Counselling and they were really good as they acted out “Home for the Holiday”. Lots of laughs with their honest and fun portrayals of family members. With the release of the film “50 Shades of Grey” on Valentine’s Day, our speaker for Feb. 19th was most timely. Dr. Lynne Schneider, a Sexuality Counselor and Educator, helped to examine the success of this reading phenomenon, especially with older women. Wow!! The remaining 2 luncheon meetings are sure to be winners. They are: March 19th will be LARRY FERBER, a TV veteran who has produced many daytime talk shows of the 1970’s-2000’s including Dinah Shore, Mike Douglas, Joan Rivers, Dennis Miller, and Sally Jessy Raphael.
His lecture will be peppered with video clips and anecdotes that give an inside look at the tv industry. April 16th is our Gala Finale with WAYNE LEGETTE, a most talented singer and actor. He will present a cabaret-style Broadway themed show, and I promise that you will leave the club humming and smiling broadly. Our final out of club trip will be to the Jupiter Maltz Theater to see “Les Miserables” and we are looking at the next season’s programs to take you there once again. To join our wonderful club of almost 600 members, call Rowena Kovler at 241-5486. And remember to sign up at the Front Lobby Desk OR at the reception desk at Fitness for the monthly luncheons, and the cancellation deadline is still Monday, 4 days prior to the luncheon. See you soon. Marjorie Lassoff, President
