CONGRATULATIONS Jaye Green

Jaye Marie Green completed a runaway victory in the LPGA Tour qualifying tournament Sunday, finishing with a record 29-under 331 total for a 10-stroke margin. The 19-year-old Green, Donnie Green’s daughter, closed with a 4-under 68 on LPGA International’s Jones Course. She broke the

event 90-hole mark of 18-under 342 set by Stacy Lewis in 2008. “This is going to be a week that I’ll always remember,” Green said. “I was the most nervous on that last green when I didn’t have to be, but I really was. But when that putt fell I was just speechless and I think I was just seeing stars really. It was a cool feeling. I just felt really relieved.”

CLUB COURSE NEWS by Scott Feller, PGA Director of Golf - Club Course

The Club Course hosted another successful Member/Member event in December. ( winners listed at left side panel)

The 2013-2014 golf season has been off to a great start. We have experienced exceptional weather and fabulous course conditions to date. The New Year brings in many new hopes for our golf game. We sincerely hope that the spirit of competition and good will prevails this year for all of our Club Members.

We are looking forward to this year’s Men’s and Ladies’ Member Guest events in January. Due to the high number of participants, we will once again have two separate days for the Men’s Member Guest and two separate days for the Ladies’ Member Guest. The Golf Professional staff along with the Member Guest committees, have been working extremely hard to make these events exceptionally fun and enjoyable days of golf!

Our BSMGA and BSWWGA opening day events were once again very popular. Both the Men and Women had a full field for each opening day event. All participants enjoyed a great day of golf, food and drinks. In December the BSWWGA held their annual Holiday Charity Event. This year the Ladies chose “The First Tee” as their charity. The First Tee is an international youth development organization introducing the game of golf and its inherent values to young people. The golf shop had collected hundreds of used golf clubs and golf bags from Broken Sound Club Members throughout the month of November that were donated to “The First Tee program” for underprivileged children who can’t afford golf equipment. In November and December we hosted two very successful Nine and Dine events. Both events drew a full field of 128 players and we have received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from the participants. Competitors enjoyed the many on-course contests, and our Beverage Oasis, to cool off with a tasty drink. We look forward to hosting our next Nine and Dine event in the near future!

The Club Course has introduced a new program called “PGA Tour Partner Day”. Every Thursday and Friday throughout the PGA Tour season, each member playing golf on that day picks a PGA Tour player from the current week’s roster as their partner. The member’s net score from that day combined with the PGA Tour player’s score for that day will give them a Team Score. Each team is given a point total based on how they finished that day and the point totals are posted outside of the Club Course golf shop each Monday. The program is free to participate and it’s a fun way to compete against other members. Remember, you must post your score to be eligible to compete and it is important to post all scores to keep a current handicap for league play or just friendly competition! The Club Course will continue to hold demo days throughout the rest of the season. Please remember we offer a special “Demo Day only” discount on club orders from our featured vendor. Any golf clubs ordered on Demo Day from our featured vendor receives an additional 10% discount. Please see the website or golf shop for Demo Day schedule.

Jack Simon accomplished a rare feat in shooting his age of 78.

When we write this newsletter article, we also reflect over events of the past few months and renew our commitment to bringing new and innovative ideas to each event we produce, whether it is a newly conceived idea or one that we do every year. We hope that we can continue to create a sense of awe and exceed your expectations. The special events reservations have been skyrocketing, demonstrating once again that Broken Sound Club knows how to throw a good party. Special events such as Member meet Member left the attendees blown away by the creativity of the Catering Department and the lavish decorations and scrumptious bites - the attendance was the highest it has ever been with 440 guests joining us for the Opening Celebration. Photos of the event can be viewed on our website,

Facebook page and the Catering blog (brokensoundclub.wordpress.com). Our New Year’s Eve Celebration’s theme of “Mirror, Mirror on the wall” was inspired by the upcoming movie “Maleficent,” starring Angelina Jolie in the lead role. Inspiration comes to us from all different sources, from movies, music, food, a decorative piece seen while shopping at Z Gallerie, or even reinventing expected event themes such as jungle themed parties. For each event we think and rethink the endless possibilities, and settle on what would be most impressive, yet unusual. We will attempt to do the same for the Golf Member Guests, and this year’s inaugural Card Member Guest, which will delight guests with a colorful, peacock-like atmosphere. Décor is important everywhere. It sets a tone, a mood and creates an uplifting ambiance either in your home, or at an event.

With the start of the new season, more venues reopened to the membership. The Pool Bistro is doing wonderfully. Check your inboxes or visit the Broken Sound Club website for the times of operation and the menus. Also, keep an eye out for the weekly email from the Food and Beverage Department called “Word of Mouth” that will keep you up to date with what’s cooking in Dining. To make dinner reservations at the Main Clubhouse and the Old Course please call 561-241-6877. We do not take reservations at the Hostess Podiums. Please ensure that your guests are aware of our dress code and remember that we have a cancellation policy. For regular dinners, reservations may be cancelled up to six (6) hours prior. Failure to cancel or a no-show will result in a charge of $15 per person for each member of the party. Making a reservation and failing to appear deprives other members of the opportunity to have dinner at the club. Complete dining policies are on our website. Keep in mind, that when making a reservation, please make sure you take note of the Confirmation Number that will be provided to you. Have your membership number ready when calling. An automated e-mail with subject line “New Reservation” or “Reservation Cancelled” will be sent as a confirmation, making it easier for members to follow up on their dining commitments. Please update your e-mail addresses with the Membership Department’s Jean Ouellette to make sure you receive these messages. In the midst of our season, our calendar is bursting. Each week is filled with community dinners, club events, private parties, and golf tournaments. Our staff is working tirelessly to ensure that each event is a complete success. We continue to book events every day, even into 2015! Thank you for your continued confidence. The Food and Beverage Office takes numerous phone calls, scheduled and unscheduled appointments – seven days per week. Therefore, in order to better serve you and to give you our undivided attention, we strongly urge you to call ahead for an appointment. Warm regards, Lorant G. Botha, CHS, CHSP Catering Manager

Learnin’ With Vernon Tips & Strategies For Fun & Successful Tennis How Can I Become a Better Tennis Player?

love volley

Tennis involves both the power of body and mind. Becoming a better player means calibrating and strengthening these two incredible assets. Here’s what YOU can do to make the most of your game! STRENGTHS – What do you do best? Know what that is and when the chips are down, count on that skill as the most prized weapon in your arsenal. Literally, play to your strengths! And FYI: everybody has one. If you don’t know what your strengths are, just ask a pro.

I hope your holiday was a rewarding one for you and your family. With our biggest events coming up in the next four months please pick up your pocket calendar in the tennis shop. In January we have the start of the Club

The Men’s Member Guest is on Saturday February 15th, followed by the Women’s Member Guest on Monday March 3rd. Sign up early for both of these popular events. CONDITIONING – Tennis is a really a foot sport with racquet in-hand. As with any cardiovascular activity, it is imperative to both warm-up and cooldown properly…don’t forget to stretch! Equally as important is putting the proper fuel in your body for training or for a competition. Be prepared to go three sets. Nothing is more frustrating than dominating a match, coming close to a win, and then losing control solely because you ran out of gas. MENTAL – How do you handle stress? You MUST be mentally tough. When the chips are down are you your own worst enemy? (Wouldn’t you rather be your own best friend!?) Do you take it out on your partner? Take responsibility. Don’t always point the finger: it’s not about playing the best tennis game ever, it’s about playing to the best of your ability and rising to each situation to handle what is given to you. Apply the power of positivity on yourself and your partner. You’ll both reap the benefits! PRACTICE – The phrase “practice makes perfect” was coined for a reason. It is critical that you spend time working on your game! Team practice is not enough. Have a focused practice to work on something specific so as to improve the weak parts of your game. Ask the pro what you need to work on and what drills you could be doing to get better. As a team, we are only as strong as our collective weaknesses…with focus and effort we can rise to the top! EFFORT – Do you want to get better? Actions speak louder than words! Get in there and make it happen. To get results, you must actually do the things it takes to get better. You can’t just want to get better because you want to…you have to give 100% time EVERY time you are on the court! View every situation as an opportunity to improve!

“ Successful people aren’t born that way. They become successful by establishing the habit of doing things unsuccessful people don’t like to do.” -Don Marquis

St Andrews Tennis Challenge On Saturday December 7th we hosted St. Andrews Club and played in our 13th annual tennis challenge. The matches were very competitive, but we won 8-5. At one time we had 4 matches all in 10 point super tie breaks. We were fortunate to win 3 of the 4 matches to give us the win. We will keep the trophy for another year! All the participants enjoyed a wonderful day and as always we look forward to next year.

New Year’s Fitness Resolution MADNESS! The New Year is here! While many, many people plan to use this landmark time to get healthier or lose weight, the problem with these goals is that they are difficult to maintain. Most people want to see a significant weight loss within a few months or hope to change eating habits within a few weeks. Unfortunately, weight loss and getting in shape can be more complicated than that, but here are some tips to help you reach your goals. The Screen - Come in for a complimentary fitness evaluation and cover topics such as nutrition, body composition, heart rates, injuries, rehab and blood pressure. Each individual screen gives us the necessary information to help design a program tailored to your specific needs and situation.

Knowledge – Understand what you are doing when you exercise. Personal trainers can help you design the perfect fitness program and educate you on machines, functional training, post rehab and proper cardio. Don’t just wing it. The more you know, the more efficient your wellness approach will be. Sport Specific Training – If you are an avid golf or tennis player, learn the best exercises to equip you to master your sport with more flexibility, strength and speed. Our golf specific TPI program is a great way to help determine biomechanical deficiencies in your golf swing. Above all, stick with your program and do not give up - John Norcross, a University of Scranton psychologist, recently told WebMD that 36 percent of people who make fitness resolutions quit after one month, and 56 percent quit after six months. The Broken Sound Fitness Staff is always around to help you achieve your desired fitness goals and to answer any questions. Happy New Year and stay strong, fit and healthy for 2014!

The delectable brunch served by the club was a highlight. We are most grateful to the staff for helping us create a successful event. Thank you to all who joined us, enjoyed themselves, while donating to enable Hadassah to continue its essential life saving work.

We are pleased to announce that our chapter met its financial goal for 2013. As we continue to support research and education, we are also asked to contribute to special projects. As part of the Florida Atlantic region, we have been charged with equipping one of the new Intensive Care Units in the new hospital. To that end we need your continued participation and support. We are proud to share a few of the latest project highlights from Hadassah.

company have isolated a chemical (peptide) from fetal tissue that is effective in preventing graft versus host reaction in people receiving Bone Marrow Transplants. This is a very significant discovery because it can help prevent transplant failure. Hadassah Medical Organization has launched a year long Women’s Heart Health Initiative, entitled “Every Beat Counts”. The program is aimed at altering Heart Disease as the NUMBER ONE KILLER OF WOMEN. A multidisciplinary team has inaugurated the program in 2 insular communities, one Arab and the other religious Jewish. We, in the U.S., have the opportunity to follow portions of the program. We invite you to join us for any and all of our planned events. Next general meeting is Monday evening January 13 at 7:30 pm. Our guests will be Victoria Jolson, Al Jolson’s daughter-in-law and Chuck Prentiss T.V. personality. We wish everyone a joyful holiday season and a healthy, happy and peace filled year. BUTTERFLY AND GARDEN CLUB We have just had three wonderful events! On October 16th, Lorraine Conover, the president of the Boca Raton Orchid Society, demonstrated how to mount orchids on a variety of surfaces. On November 7th, we toured a garden in West Palm Beach, had Hors d’oeuvres, saw the art work and then had an “After the Tour Tea” at Sylvia Zeitlin’s home. What wonderful food everyone brought! On November 12th, we joined with the Book Club, and discussed the terrific book, Flight Behavior, by Barbara Kingsolver. On January 22, at 3:45 P.M. in the Media Room, Shirley Pedersen, the daughter of John and Lillian Pedersen, will tell us all about Africa U.S.A. John bought 300 acres in Boca in 1950, for $25.00 an acre. He transformed it into a wildlife, cage free park, with botanical gardens. He brought animals from Africa, planted over 55,000 plants, put in a waterfall and a geyser. (The geyser base is now in the community of Camino Gardens. ) With 300,000 visitors a year, Africa U.S.A. put Boca on the map! The park was even on the cover of Life magazine. africausa.com
