CLUB COURSE NEWS by Scott Feller, PGA Director of Golf - Club Course Summer has arrived and the golf course has continued to see a lot of play. Our members have enjoyed the opportunity to play many other premier clubs in the area through our reciprocal golf program. Anyone interested in taking advantage of our reciprocal golf program should contact our golf shop. On May 1st, we were host to the Boca Raton Police Athletic League Event. Boca PAL has grown to assist youth who are at risk of academic failure, substance abuse or criminal activity by providing safe places for them to go during non-school hours with structured recreational activities. Broken Sound Club is proud to host this event each year in support of the Boca PAL organization. We had 144 participants who enjoyed a great day of golf for a great cause. The Club Course also played host to the Habitat for Humanity event on May 8th. Habitat for Humanity builds homes in partnership with families who demonstrate a need for housing and a willingness to work with them to purchase a home of their own. Broken Sound Club has been a contributing member of the Habitat for Humanity-South Palm Beach organization for a number of years and is proud to be a part of building new homes for those in need. The event was a huge success with over 100 participants and a lot of money raised for a great cause.

On May 11 th , Club Course employees Matt Newman, Colin Nicholson, Tim Nelson, and George McClennan participated in Marathon Golf Day. Marathon Golf Day was created to help raise money for local children’s charities. Congratulations to Broken Sound Club’s foursome who played 100 holes of golf in 12 hours. We would like to thank those who supported the cause and made our Marathon Golf Day a success! Our Men’s South County League team has begun another season as they look to defend their championship title. The men had a miraculous comeback in the second half of the season last year to get into the playoffs and swept through the post season matches to win the title. We wish them luck this year as the season continues. The Ladies’ Summer Swingers team has increased its participation this season. They are at the midpoint of this season and hope to have strong finish in the second half. The ladies travel around locally competing against other clubs while having the opportunity to meet and socialize with similar playing competitors. We wish them luck as the summer continues along. The upcoming Aerification dates are: July 28th, 29th, 30th and September 8th, 9th, 10th. I hope to see everyone out on the links! Have a healthy summer season!

OLD COURSE NEWS With summer here, The Old Course Staff would like to extend our well wishes to all our members, those residing here during the summer months, those who may be traveling and for all others who are spending their time elsewhere. The month of May featured the South County League, which was a one day event between Broken Sound & Stonebridge Golf & Country Club. The South County League is hosted multiple times throughout the summer at both, the Club Course as well as The Old Course. Broken Sound won handsomely with a score of 6-3. The winning team was comprised of the following members: Bob Halper & Ken Thomas, Ed McGrattan & Barry Karpf, Larry Moses & Michael Sandler, Howard Gladston & Harvey Perry, David Slipacoff & Harvey Feldman, Ron Snyder & Ron Ehrlich, Richard Shaw & Stephen Liedman, Paul Pinsky & William Rymer and Robert Smiley & Larry Oliver. All players played very well to give Broken Sound the win.

The Old Course again was a host to The Emerald League held on June 4th. The format consisted of two person teams playing a net better ball of two against other clubs as well as the aggregate of two best net scores for each team. The following Broken Sound Club’s teams scored as follows: Sal Caragliano & Ira Udell – Net Best Ball of 67; Jerry Rubinstein & Larry Moses – Net Best Ball of 70; Bob Halper & David Lund – Net Best Ball of 72. Broken Sound Club finished with a combined score of 137 and a team total of 4.5 points. Ira Udell was also the closest to the hole on #3. As always, we invite everyone out to enjoy The Old Course and all it has to offer. The summer months are the true growing season for the course and as it continues to be in great shape, we ask that you help us keep it that way by repairing ball marks, filling divots and raking bunkers. Please continue to share your thoughts with us and should there be anything we can do to enhance your Old Course experience, please let us know.

Playing in the Wind

Junior Summer Program

Watching the US Open and the upcoming British Open will call to mind the difficulty of playing in the wind, and we have our fair share of windy days at Broken Sound Club as well. You can master the wind with a few basic tips. Firstly, choose at least one extra club and swing easy - do not swing harder. Many golfers are tempted to swing harder and fight the wind. However, the more you accelerate in to the ball the more spin you create and the higher the ball will go, which exaggerates the effects of the wind on your ball flight and distance. Additionally, you want to keep the ball lower by placing the ball about an inch back in your stance and bend your knees a bit more to stay stable in the wind. Now, take a shorter than normal swing, three-quarter swing on a ‘full swing’ shot. Lastly, try to stay low and ‘over the ball’ as you swing through by keeping your hips and shoulders level at impact.

People like to donate to charities, but don’t let your opponents be a charity by giving them easy points. Avoid giving up the most important shots tactically in tennis! Strengthen your tactical position by being unshakable with these 5 shots.

MY SIDE OF THE COURT By Greg Wheaton, Director of Tennis With summer in full swing we are staying busy with league play for the women on Tuesday and Wednesday. I hope everyone stays cool and hydrated during the heat of the summer. For those of you who will be here on Saturday July 4th we will hold our annual Firecracker Round Robin. We continue to be a host site for the Boys 16 and under National Clay Courts starting July 12-16. This will be very exciting for our club to host a tournament of this stature. If you are in town, this is a must see. Stop by the shop and say hello and check out the clothing on sale. Enjoy all your travels and stay safe.

Beat the Pro. Immediately following the July 4th round robin you will have the opportunity of a life time. You can challenge our pros on court to win a T-shirt saying you beat the pro. There will be a sign up for those people who played in the round robin to participate. Tuesday Night Men’s Tennis. We are starting up a group to play men’s doubles on Tuesdays at 6:00pm. The level of play is between a 3.0 and 3.5. If you are interested in having some fun and meeting some good guys, this is for you. Please sign up in the tennis shop.

Division 6 Takes Sportsmanship Award

1. High Percentage of First Serves Getting a high percentage of first serves in, not only boosts your confidence but it will put your opponents in a neutral or defensive mindset. Giving your opponent too many looks at a second serve has them in an aggressive mindset and puts them in the driver seat and in “attack mode”. First serves in = more points won. continued on page 14

Firecracker Round Robin. Join us for a fun day of tennis with your friends and celebrate this holiday starting at 8:45. There will be a continental breakfast at 10:30am following the Round Robin Team Competition at 9:00am. This event does require a sign up.

Alan Myer TPI Client of the Quarter Alan has been involved in the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Program at Broken Sound for well over 7 months now. He wanted to increase his overall distance, strength and endurance. Alan had many swing characteristics and mobility issues throughout the golf swing. Our workouts started working on balance, general strength and flexibility. Through a strict workout regimen and nutritional discipline Alan has seen increases in his driving distance by as much as 15 yards. His driving accuracy has increased now allowing him to hit more greens in regulation bringing his score down. Breaking 90 was once a difficult task but now Alan is consistently shooting in the low 80’s. www.brokensoundclub.org

Lisa is the definition of hard work and dedication to living a healthy lifestyle. She began training with Jeff in January 2015 for “ The Biggest Loser” competition. While she came up just short of winning the competition, to date has lost 16 pounds, and 5.2% of her body fat through an improved diet and combination of cardio and strength training. Lisa continues to train twice per week. She is a prime example of what one can accomplish with a healthy diet and consistent workout plan.

KIDS COOKING

Ladies Tennis Is Acknowledged It is a time of appreciation and acknowledgment at the annual SPBC Women’s Tennis Association luncheon. In attendance were 600 out of the 1500 ladies. This occurrence is not unusual but what makes this year’s luncheon so spectacular are all the achievements the Broken Sound Ladies Team Tennis has to celebrate. The division 2B team stayed on top the entire season and showed its success by winning a Broken Sound Ladies Team Tennis record 8 times with a maximum of 12 points. They were rewarded with a trophy for finishing in first place for the season (by a margin of 20 points!). Plus the team has been moved up by the league to Division 2A for the 201516 season.

There was a pleasant surprise at the beginning of the luncheon. Awards were given to those teams that have displayed tremendous sportsmanship throughout the season. Upon completion of each league match the opposing team has an opportunity to rate the other players on a scale from 1 to 5 for sportsmanship. Broken Sound Club’s Division 6 team was recognized and received the Sportsmanship Award in their division. Congratulations to both teams on an outstanding season! Winning two trophies is something to be quite proud of and made for an incredibly memorable luncheon!

Learnin’ with Vernon continued from page 11

2. Return of Serve No matter if it is a first serve or a second serve: GET THE RETURN IN PLAY. Too often players want to go for the “career shot” off the return. Get the point started by showing your opponent that they will not get any easy points. 3. Your First Volley As most doubles players know, doubles is won at the net. Does that mean you will be hitting winners all the time when you find yourself at the net? No, most certainly not. However, set yourself up for success by making the first volley once you have arrived at the net. When your opponent sees you at the net and you are able to make the first volley, it shows your opponent that they will have to hit great shots to beat you. Being consistent on your first volley will set you up for the finishing shot. 4. Approach Shot Transitioning to the net is a crucial part of the game. The approach shot or “transition shot” is just that, a means by which you get from the Page 14

baseline to the net. Don’t let this opportunity to get into the net turn into attempting to hit a winner. Use this to get yourself into a good position at the net. You many not think it, but by just being a presence at the net puts pressure on your opponent. 5. Opponents First Volley Most of the time I see players, while physically under control from the baseline, hit lobs when one or both of the opposing players approach the net. Don’t be so quick to hit a lob. Allow the opponent to hit a volley first. They may surprise you and hit the ball out or in the net. Making your opponent hit volley will also set up for a more effective lob. Provided the ball is kept low, making your opponents hit at least one volley promotes a closer position to the net and allows for even the average lob to be effective.

Don’t be charitable to your opponent... be rock solid on these five shots and the results will speak for themselves!
