Dr. Alan Gold trained in his General Surgery Residency at North Shore University Hospital, and completed his Plastic Surgery Residency at New York’s Kings County Hospital-Downstate Medical Center. Dr. Gold has been in private practice since 1978, specializing in aesthetic plastic surgery. To achieve the best results for his patients, he creatively utilizes all of the “traditional” as well as the “newest” and most innovative techniques and procedures, but always with his patient’s safety and best results in mind. Dr. Todd Rodman’s philosophy is to get people back to what they love to do as quickly as possible. In order to get exceptional results he has studied the most effective soft tissue and nutritional therapies to compliment his Chiropractic and physical rehabilitation background. In 2010 Dr. Rodman was named as the Official Team Chiropractor of Florida Atlantic University athletics to help keep their players injury free and performing at their highest level. He has also been on the medical staff at the Ironman competitions as well as the head of Athlete Services for the CrossFit Games. 241-6820 I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful summer, whether you are in Boca, up north or traveling. We are busy planning new events for next season and will be sending out an events booklet in a few months. We have also had a lot of activity in home sales and calls from realtors and prospective buyers. Those realtors who have seen our new pool complex and spa/ fitness areas have had nothing but praise for the new facilities. Recently, I sent an email to everyone outlining a new feature on our website called The Forum. It is basically a bulletin board for members to post information, sales of items, requests, etc. and is an interactive way for members to

by Scott Feller, PGA Director of Golf - Club Course Dear Golfers, This past year we have enjoyed some of the highest participation in our Golf Leagues, fantastic response for our charity events, and spirited competition in our Club Championships as well as Member Guests. The Professional staff is now working with the Golf Committee and League Boards to finalize the 2014 schedule for the Club Course. Our goal is always to create a wonderful experience

for all our golf members each year. Through the spirit of friendly competition and exciting formats we plan on having an even more successful season in 2014 For those Golf Members that stay for the Summer I hope all of you take advantage of our Reciprocal golf program. Every summer we work with other prestigious clubs in the area to offer a travelling golf experience. Many local private clubs offer golf at a discounted rate for our Golf Members to enjoy all summer long. I hope to see everyone out on the links! Have a healthy summer season!

Golf for America’s Bravest This year our Club Members joined together to raise over $60,000 during our Golf for America’s Bravest event held on March 11, 2013. This year’s event supported both Stephen Siller’s Tunnel to Towers Foundation and The Wounded Warrior Project. Over 220 golfers from both courses joined together to make the event a huge success. This year’s event included a presentation from the Marine Color Guard as well as a stirring rendition of Our National Anthem just before the morning shotgun. After golf Members

joined together in the Member’s Grill Room at the Club Course and enjoyed a fantastic meal and great camaraderie while listening to engaging stories about the charities’ endeavors to help America’s injured Veteran’s, local Firefighters, and service men and women. Thank you to the all the committee members, that worked so hard to raise money and recruit players for the event this year. Also, thank you to all the players and supporters of the event. We are looking forward to raising even more charity dollars next season.

The Challenge Cup is the first and largest scratch league in Palm Beach County, founded over 20 years ago. Broken Sound was an original member of this league.

Each spring, the lowest handicap women golfers compete in 5 matches over a 2-3 week time period. The league which started with 6 teams and 1 cup has expanded over the years to now include 22 clubs and 6 cups. Broken Sound currently has 2 teams, that compete in the second and fifth cup. It is an honor and privilege to be part of this league. This season our cup 2 team finished the competition in 2nd place. Our cup 5 team won the cup and has moved up to the 4th cup for next year’s matches. Congratulations to both teams for outstanding competition this year.

Improve Your Golf Game TPI The Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) experience comes to Broken Sound Club with a professionally certified program that features a series of strength and flexibility screens and video analysis to help correct your golf swing. TPI is the leading source in the industry for fitness golf and biomechanics. The two hour evaluation starts off with a total health history, optional body fat analysis, bp, THR and nutritional advice. The second part of the TPI evaluation has the individual go through a series of mobility and stability screens that help diagnose flexibility and strength issues. Eleven screens are completed to establish proper exercise and stretching modalities that the client will do over a set period of time. An exercise and nutritional program is given at this time to help the client achieve proper results through the TPI process. The third part of the exam is a complete video analysis on the down the line or target line view of the golf swing and the face-on camera view. 12 swing defaults are broken down from the video and analyzed using TPI swing characteristics. Swing defaults like “loss of posture”, “sway”, “casting”, etc. are diagnosed and captured onto a report with corrections that vary from client to client. The complete 2 hour screening includes all three parts plus an hour of video analysis by the screener. The complete TPI report will be given 24-48 hours after the screening and follow up TPI training with a certified TPI exercise specialist is highly advised.

Tips & Strategies For Fun & Successful Tennis! THE SPLIT STEP

Do you ever feel like you are not ready for the ball? As if that step you take is always just a bit slow? The solution is called the “split step” (No, this isn’t having your legs stretched out in complete opposite directions as if you were a gymnast!) The split step is done while standing in a ready position with your feet shoulder width apart. You then take a hop on the balls of your feet with your heels slightly elevated. It’s an action that must be taken in order for you to react to a ball being hit to you over the net.

The season is coming to an end, and I want to thank all of those who participated in all of our Club activities this year. A special thanks to all who acted as captains for the various leagues we participated in this year. It is support like this that makes our tennis program the best. A special thanks to all the pros that participated in this year’s Broken Sound Invitational. With our new facility opening it made the event even better than in the past. We look forward to next year and any other events we may host in the future. Congratulations to Larry Kobren and Bob Armon for a great season in League play. Larry Kobrens team won the Division 1 Sr. League Championship. Bob Armons’ team also won the Championship in the Grand Slam League. I would also like to congratulate Lewis Messulam and Leon Tracy, they also had their teams playing for a Championship but unfortunately lost in close matches that came down to tie-breakers. A special thanks to Larry Kobren, Warren Rabinowitz, Lewis Messulam, Fred Drozdoff and Leon Tracy for their relentless work of being captains. We look

forward to next year for another competitive and fun year of league play. It was great to get back to our annual Invitational tournament. We did something we haven’t done in the past that I would like to continue in the future. To start things off, Montrez sang the National Anthem acapella. It was both beautiful and chilling at the same time. The finals produced some great shot making and some exciting looks that we’ve never seen here at Broken Sound. In the middle of the first set there was a quick exchange of shots back and forth until finally Horacio Rearte put away the ball to win the point. Arthur Novoseletsky who was on the other side of the court became so frustrated he pulled on his shorts and when they went down, it was a full moon. You don’t see that every day! When everyone caught their breath, they finished the match with Horacio Rearte and Carlos Gomez-Diaz winning 6-3, 6-1. Unfortunately the Ladies Pro Am was rained out, but we were able to get the Mens’ in on Saturday. We had a tie for first and second. Pro-Am Winners: Gary Post and Stan Schreiber Finalist: Harry Meran and Bob Drogowitz Finally a special thanks to Broken Sound Club and 10-S Tennis Supply for their sponsorship of the tournament.

Split step right before your opponent hits the ball. (When you land from the small hop, your feet should meet the ground just as your opponent strikes the ball). You should split step throughout the point, no matter if you are at the net or on the baseline. Getting in the habit of doing split step is essential! Not only will it speed up that first step you take, but it will enable you to react to any ball that is hit to you (no matter where…!) You’ll get to everyball!!!!

SPA AND FITNESS

Leigh-Ann Davidson Assistant Spa Director 241-6858

There are many fabulous areas within the new facility. One area I would like to highlight to you today is the spin studio. The spin studio is equipped with the latest technology. The Keiser M3 spin bikes are the finest in the industry. They offer magnetic resistance which offers the smoothest ride possible. Once you are on your bike you will be able to view our 120 inch screen in the front of the room. On that screen you will be able to view virtual classes, virtual instructors, or take a virtual ride through beautiful scenery in Hawaii, France, the Rockies or many other locations. Each bike has a cadence monitor that you can track your personal outputs. You can track your RPM, WATTS, Heart Rate, Time

Elapsed, Gear, Odometer/Trip distance, and the averages of all the statistics over your ride. You also have the option to compete with others in the class. We now have the technology to have each bike rider compete against each other in a fair system that considers the rider’s unique variables. Also, if you wear a heart rate monitor, you will be able to see your heart rate and which “heart rate training zone” you are exercising within. The spin room, system, and bikes are superb and every one of all levels should give spinning a try. If you feel you are ready for classes, we offer instructor led classes every day. If you want to practice and build your endurance up prior to participating in an instructor led class, you may have the studio set up for you any day and at almost any time. We currently have our members coming to spin by themselves or with a friend. All you have to do is let the Fitness Staff know you would like to use the room, and we will set up the audio and visual for you. Virtual classes are fun and addictive. Create a new and healthy addiction! Enjoy your summer

GREEN tip of the week Week At A Glance Member Contests http://www.facebook.com/BrokenSoundClub

Wow! What a powerful season. It appears that everything we did was a huge success and that success was due to everyone’s hard work. Our Lunch and Learn series were very well received, guest speakers were educational, and fundraisers were profitable. Broken Sound Hadassah and Boca Friends for Cancer had a first-ever joint charity venture. “Casino Night” Kudos to Paula Karp, Marilyn Levine, Sharon Wasserstein, Ruth Perel, Dorothy Isaacs and Hannah Scheff from Boca Friends. It was great working with you. Hadassah’s committee included Caryle Gulker, Judy Needle, Sandy Gaynor, Susan Slinger, Paula Gluckman, Jane Sonenshein, and Ruth Levy. March’s general meeting featured our own Lorant Botha, Master’s Degree candidate, who

spoke to a packed audience on his thesis on the Holocaust, “Building Pride out of Shame - the Forgotten Victims of the Holocaust”. Lorant’s interest was set when as a young child he asked his mother, “Why are the synagogues empty?” Everyone who attended the April 6 Dinner & Concert by the West Point Jewish Chapel Choir, presented by our Broken Sound Club and Broken Sound Hadassah, now knows that this Military Academy’s cadets are the best America has to offer. No, you do not have to be Jewish to be in the choir. We give thanks to Mr. Crean, who had courage and faith in our program and to his staff, headed by Tim Nelson and Ed Cichielo, whose service was truly outstanding. A very special thank you is extended to Lynn Saxton, who brought the program to Broken Sound, joined our committee, and worked with us every step of the way. The Broken Sound Nine Hole League ladies enjoy Mimosas at the end of season luncheon. League president Myra Rogoff led the ladies to a successful season with full participation and much fun.

BOCA FRIENDS FOR CANCER RESEARCH

Dear Broken Sound Supporters of Cell Phones For Soldiers thru the Major Stuart Adam Wolfer Institute, www.MSAWI.org As the Institute enters its 6th year as an authorized Collector for Cell Phones for Soldiers, we are so appreciative to you, our friends, & fellow members of Broken Sound for your continuous deposits of cell phones, iPads, iPods, iPhones, & Blackberries to the Broken Sound Club House Receptionist Desk. The support of the greater Boca Raton Community thru MSAWI’s mission of providing cost free communication service to our active duty military members & their families has to date provided over 750,000 Units thus being able to fund 12,500 FREE Talking Time Minutes. Graduation time is near, weddings, birthdays, Mother’s & Father’s Days, Flag Day, July 4th, all are occasions to consider a new Cell Phone for someone. Make 2 people happy...the receiver of your gift of a cell phone & to yourself, the giver, as you bring the old cell phone to the BS Club House Receptionist Desk.

Whats white, hot and over? Our long awaited Hot Havana Nights took place April 13 and was attended by 220 Broken Sound members, their guests and families. The event took place inside due to inclement weather and I think all the ladies appreciated the lack of humidity in the club. Everyone looked fabulous in their whites as they tangoed with the dancers and learned how to Salsa. Thank you to Tim Nelson and his wonderful staff, Lorant Botha for coming in on his day off, Ed Cichielo and of course to Mr. Crean for all his support. Thank you to everyone who supported us in

Mr. & Mrs. Neumann, Mr. & Mrs Mischel, Syd Abel & Harvey Spies

this event and throughout the year. A special thank you to Arlene Shaw for all her generosity and hard work, to Jerry Yass for always being so generous to Boca Friends, Roberta Oberman - Fundraising Chairman, Marcy and Bob Haupt and Susan Harris. Please don’t be offended if I left your name out, I will thank you in person. It has been quite a season. We look forward to our May 16th card party and hope you will come. It is sure to be a hit as always. Well, it’s time for me to sharpen up my pencil, take out a clean pad and get busy with planning special events for summer and next fall. Marilyn and I wish you the healthiest and happiest of summers. Flap your wings long and hard and come back to us here in Broken Sound.

With much appreciation for your Support of Our Troops,

Esther & Len Wolfer Mr. & Mrs. Shaw

Women’s Club I can’t believe the season has already come to a close. It was such a full and successful year with wonderful speakers and terrific out-of-club trips. Professor Robert Watson brought in the largest crowd in December, with his most interesting lecture on “the Lincoln we never knew”, and we had great turnouts for the rest of the luncheons. The trip to the Maltz Jupiter Theater was fabulous, the tour and lunch aboard Liberty of the Seas was fun, another tour of Whitespace was very successful, and our day in Coral Gables at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens and lunch in Coconut Grove was loved by all 53 ladies who went with us. We have plans to do more interesting trips again

next year, so be sure to sign up for these once they are announced next Fall. For details of the upcoming season, please check your newsletter in October. It promises to be another great year, so please join us. If you are not a member yet, call Rowena Kovler at 241-5486. And don’t forget that your membership is automatically renewed unless we hear from you to the contrary by Sept. 10, 2013. I wish you all a safe and healthy summer wherever the roads may take you. Broken Sound BUTTERFLY AND GARDEN CLUB “Rain, rain go away, and come again another day.” And that is just what it did on our garden tour days! In March we saw Pat Levine’s magnificent garden full of all kinds of plants many of us had never seen before. She had a Rhipsalis, and yes that is a plant and not a disease. In April, 64 of us viewed the very lovely, butterfly garden of Barb and Jay Pisik. They even arranged to have a Monarch pupa on an Agave plant. It was amazing. Also, in March we went to Butterfly Word where we were led on a private guided tour and participated in a group lesson on how to attract butterflies to our yards. Visit extraordinary gardens showcasing the communities of Boca, Delray, Boynton, Lake Worth and West Palm with the Connoisseurs Garden Tour May 12 and May 13th. The garden

owners will open their gardens for this fabulous tour. Take one day or two, travel at your own pace. This is your opportunity to gain access to the many secret gardens. On Saturday from 10:00am -5:00pm there will be six gardens to see. Sunday’s tour will include a famous garden in Palm Beach from 1:00pm -2:00pm. Also included is the 4 Arts, Pan’s Garden and the Elegant Orchid Nursery. On Sunday at 2:00pm is a garden tea at Mounts, and a tour of their garden. Tickets are being sold at Hoffman’s Chocolate Shop at Boca Center. $20 per person for members. And $25 per person for non-members. Go to www.mounts.org to find more information. We will not have car pools for this event. If you like gardens you will love this event! If you have any questions, please call me, Lois Hendricks, 994-6747. Check out our green flier, in the bins at the club. See you in the garden.
