Letter from the President Dear Fellow Members: The Board of Governors and our Management team has been hard at work to make this the best season EVER at Broken Sound. There are so many exciting plans that we would like to share. New plans are exciting, but before beginning, I would just like to take one more opportunity to again thank our General Manager, John Crean, and his staff and the entire BSMA team for their plans to protect the Club prior to the hurricane and for their immediate response once the storm passed. Their concern for our Members who “hunkered down” throughout the hurricane was heartfelt, and all of our Members are extremely grateful! The redesign and re-grassing of the “New” golf course, formally known as the Club Course, is on schedule for a mid-November opening. Golf architects and Club professionals throughout Florida have been coming down to see what so many of them have heard: “this NEW golf course may be one of the finest courses in the United States!” With the new waterfalls and fountains, beautiful new bunkers, challenging moguls, lush landscaping, re-shaped greens – including island greens that rival the TPC, a whole new range of tee boxes, and plush “Latitude 36” grass, we have a NEW golf course that our Members will love to play, and one that enhances the value of all of our homes. We have just completed our analysis of the first ever Member Survey that was fielded in May – June. Responses from 1,250 Members have given us very good insight into areas where Members are quite pleased and those where they feel attention and improvements need to be addressed. Here are some of the most important results: •
Survey results clearly indicated that improvements/changes in the Clubhouse are desired by Members. As mentioned previously, we have made preliminary plans to look at a possible renovation of the Clubhouse.
• We heard that improvements to the dining experience were desired, and these too will be directly addressed as we formulate plans. • Communications was listed as needing improvement and the new Board of Governors has addressed this issue. We are working to issue monthly recaps of board meetings, and promise to do our best to keep Members informed on all plans. • The Members were most satisfied with our tennis program, the aquatic center, the gym and spa. Before I move on from the survey, please allow me a moment to “toast” our Club. It is easy to see flaws and areas that may need improvement. However, when we step away, it helps put things into perspective. Broken Sound Club is currently ranked 62nd out of 1,000 Clubs by Platinum Clubs of America. This is an achievement of which we can all be proud! We are delighted to report that new Equity Member home sales for the fiscal year ending September 30 was 62. Coincident with this, prices are starting to firm up as well. There were 30 new Golf Members and 32 new Tennis Members.

The Sound November / December 2017 / January 2018
The Old Course is currently at cap, though we keep open five slots for future Equity homeowners. The wait list for current Members seeking to move up to the Old Course now numbers 45. The renovation of the Old Course kitchen is still on schedule to begin in May 2018. • Our solar power-lift parking prototype was delayed by the hurricane, but is now up. The city of Boca Raton is so excited that if the system is employed in the main parking lot, they would like to participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony. • We now have a nurse practitioner from Boca Regional located in a room just past the spa. She will be here three days a week for two hours a day, available to give immediate treatment in the event of injury and also to make hassle-free and prompt arrangements to get to the hospital, if needed. • Our tennis program was AGAIN named among the best of all country clubs in the entire country! Congratulations and thanks to the staff, the Tennis Committee, and all the team captains and participants who made this happen. • The Moonstone Café, the first coffee shop in any of our regional country clubs, has exceeded all expectations and its hours have been extended to 6:00 p.m. every day. We are planning to conduct our first Color War event at Broken Sound on Sunday, February 18. Those of us who have experienced color war as kids at camp know how great an experience it was. Since Broken Sound is like adult camp to so many of us, we thought it would be a great enhancement to the Broken Sound experience. This will be a oneday event, but if it is successful, perhaps it can be extended over several days and can include all ages of “kids.” We are pleased to announce that The Golf Channel will be expanding its coverage of the upcoming Champions Tour event at the Old Course in February. I hope this has given you a taste of what has been happening and what is still to come. We are always working as hard as we can to make Broken Sound a great place to live for our current Members and an attractive place for prospective members to want to join. We are truly doing our best to have our actions guided by the simple words coined by our board member Alan Brumel – “Members matter most.” Eric Bershad, President Board of Governors

Broken Sound Club was once again awarded the highest level commendation in the Club industry, Distinguished Emerald Club for 2017 – 2018. Given that many people are unaware of the significance of this designation, we thought that a little background and information might be helpful. The designation is awarded by BoardRoom magazine, the Club industry’s only publication designed to educate the boards, owners, general managers, and department directors of private golf, city, yacht, tennis, and country clubs about issues concerning all aspects of the club, course, and operations. BoardRoom magazine developed the ‘Distinguished Club’ award program to “help vitalize and preserve the institution of private clubs by fostering a ceaseless drive to ever improve the ‘Member Experience’ provided by private clubs throughout the world.” The Distinguished Clubs award program uses a club-specific rating system that is based on a criteria and evaluation process that measures a club’s Member Experience. Every other year, a senior executive from BoardRoom magazine visits the club for a tour of the facilities with the General Manager/Chief Operating Officer and meetings with the Assistant General Manager, as well as interviews with each department director. In addition, in off years, Directors must complete an extensive survey and submit it to the magazine for scoring. There are five categories: Country Clubs, Golf Clubs, Residential Clubs, Yacht, Beach & Lake Clubs, and City & Athletic Clubs. Hundreds of clubs, worldwide, apply for the award. Broken Sound Club is one of 39 Residential Clubs awarded this distinction and we strive to reach a higher standard in order to continue to achieve this prestigious award. John Fornaro, Publisher and founder of BoardRoom magazine, and CEO/Co-Founder of Distinguished Clubs, and Molly Cox, author and national speaker, joined forces to co-author The Distinguished Club Experience, the first book published on the private club experience. They went through the list of hundreds of award-winning clubs and chose 20 to highlight, including Broken Sound Club. We are proud to be included among the best clubs in the country, and hope that you are too. Below is an excerpt from the dedication of the book by Frank Gore, Chief Analyst at Distinguished Clubs, which expresses our ambitions as club professionals. “I have been studying private clubs starting with the first private club model known as White’s Coffee Shop in London, circa 1600. The finest clubs in history have several things in common. They were essentially membership by invitation only and often had a common purpose – they were focused on providing personalized service to their members. They also shared a special relationship between the members and the employees that does not exist in any other hospitality business.”

Solar Parking Project In April 2016, John Crean, GM/COO, met with the principals of two companies, Solar Direct (produces solar panels) and Parkmatic (builds elevated parking systems) to discuss the feasibility of creating a synergistic relationship between the two, the purpose of which would be to create a solar parking structure. Both gentlemen were excited about the idea and, over the course of several months, developed drawings and a model of the system. From his research, Mr. Crean found that there weren’t any other similar structures. The Solar Parking Project was born.
“This is a groundbreaking idea and, if approved, Broken Sound Club would be the first in the country to have anything like it.”
It took a lot of coordination over the past year with contractors, the City of Boca Raton for permitting, land planners, landscape architects, and BSMA to bring this project into being. In addition to solving the Club’s parking issue, some of the unique benefits of the project include: • The amount of green space required is less than would be required with a garage or expanded parking lot that radiates heat; • Conservatively, this would generate between $60,000 and $80,000 annually, thereby offsetting the electrical expense incurred from FPL; • Marketing the solar / parking system will provide the opportunity to shine a positive light on Broken Sound Club; • Installation of electrical car charging stations for a few parking spaces; • The system will be operated only by the valet staff and the retrieval time is faster than the current way of having the valets run for each car.

You can now see a prototype with twenty (20) parking spots (ten lower and ten upper level), the only one in the world, being constructed in the Main Club parking lot. This is a groundbreaking idea and, if approved, Broken Sound Club would be the first in the country to have anything like it.

takes its mission regarding environmental sustainability seriously and has led the club industry in “GREEN initiatives
In an effort to help enhance our community through Habitat for Humanity, 13 of our staff volunteered their time in June, to become the first ever Habitat team fielded by Broken Sound Club. Their goal was to help build a house on Southwest 1st Street in Boynton Beach, providing a much needed and appreciated home for a less privileged local family. Beyond the good being done for the selected family, the benefits extended to our employees as well. Some of the team members joined Habitat’s construction leader, “Popeye,” on the roof, as he instructed us on each detail of the roof-raising process. Others in our group were shown how to frame the inside of the home, where they enclosed the walls, windows, and doors.

Everyone learned how to use new tools and some had to overcome personal fears to accomplish the tasks they faced. It was great to see the team cheering each other on when someone was scared, and fun to watch them coach each other through the proper use of saws and nail guns when uncertainty became an obstacle. The Broken Sound participants truly came together as a team, bonding with pride as they shared this experience. - Gabriela Muriel, Chief Trainer

HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU SLEEP? We have been told that six to eight hours of sleep per day would be ideal for a perfect lifestyle, but what does that really mean? Unfortunately, on average, only one in three adults have this luxury. Sleep is not only important to your mental health, but your physical health as well. If you are working toward changing your body composition, then a few extra hours of shut-eye may be what you need to attain your goal. Sleep is not just "sleep." Researchers divide sleep into two types: REM sleep (when dreams occur) and NREM sleep (non-REM). Sleep directly effects hormones in your body that contribute to both muscle growth and muscle loss. These two types of hormones are called anabolic hormones (the hormones that promote muscle growth) and catabolic hormones (the hormones that can contribute to muscle loss). A good night’s rest has a profound impact on both of these hormone groups. Sleep or the lack of sleep, also has a significant effect on the second group of hormones, the catabolic hormones, and specifically a hormone called cortisol.
A lack of sleep makes it harder to gain muscle
• Sleeping less means that you experience less SWS, or short wave sleep, resulting in fewer opportunities to secrete Growth Hormone and develop muscle. • In addition to Growth Hormone, testosterone is also negatively affected by lack of sleep. • Sleeping less can increase cortisol levels, which impairs muscle development. 18
A lack of sleep makes it harder to lose fat
• Irregular sleep throws off your ghrelin/leptin cycles, making you feel hungrier. • Sleeping less has been linked to eating more snacks than you would normally, increasing your energy intake. • Sleeping less can cause reductions in your Basal Metabolic Rate by as much as 20 percent, significantly reducing your total energy output. • Being tired also reduces spontaneous movements, further reducing your total energy output.
“Did you know that the light from your phone actually prevents your brain from creating the chemical melatonin?”
The key to a great night’s sleep is all about your evening routine. Warm baths, essential oils, or a caffeine-free tea are just a few easy ways to prepare both physically and mentally for your best rest. In today’s society it is not uncommon to be attached to technology at all times. Did you know that the light from your phone actually prevents your brain from creating the chemical melatonin? Melatonin is the chemical our body creates to help regulate how we fall asleep and stay asleep. Help yourself fall asleep more easily by limiting your interactions with technology at least 30 minutes before bed. Take care of yourself and your body by changing your sleep habits today. They may be what is preventing you from reaching your fitness goals.

On Court
Learnin’ With Vernon Be Aggressive at the Net: Step Out of Your Comfort Zone...and Poach! Playing tennis is a constant game of adjustments, especially in doubles. When should you play defense? When should you be aggressive or be on the offensive? When should you wave the white flag? (Hopefully never!) It is important to be consistent before you can determine a strategy or tactic, but it is inevitable that at some point, especially in doubles, there will be a need to play aggressively. The player that is in the position to be aggressive is the net player and the team that controls the middle of the court is usually the more successful team. One of the best ways to get control of the middle of the court is to poach.
What is a Poach?
You may have heard this term used here and there, but what exactly does it mean? A poach is when the net player takes a ball that is intended for their partner. Typically, their partner is on the baseline when this happens. When you poach you are controlling the middle of the court. If you do this, you can force your opponent to rethink their strategy and they may then have to do something that may not be within their comfort level. When you poach, you are most likely to be going to your partner’s side of the court. An added benefit of poaching is that it allows for you to visually communicate to your partner that you are taking their side and that your partner needs to move to the other side of the court.
Planned Poach
Remember, it is always better to plan and fail than to have no plan at all! A planned poach is when you (the net player) have discussed with your partner prior to the point starting, that you are going to poach. This is typically when you are the server’s partner. As the net player, you are looking for a serve down the middle of the court where the two service boxes meet. The ball being served down the middle is most likely to be returned down the middle, which will give you an opportunity to cut the ball off from going cross court and poach! Even if you make this plan to poach and you don’t win the point, you have planted a seed in your opponents’ head that you will not just stand there. They then have to adjust their game plan.
20
“Poaching is an important strategy to consider as a way to gain control of the middle of the court.” Unplanned Poach
Even a poach that is not planned requires some level of calculation based on what you have seen in play in the match thus far. Does your opponent only hit the ball cross court? If so, this may give you opportunity to cut the ball off from getting to your partner and poach. Is your opponent off balance while hitting the ball? This requires you to not only look at the ball, but to see if the opponent is moving backward or stretching. If they do seem off balance, they may offer a weak return, giving you an opportunity to poach.
When Not to Poach Is your opponents' ball being hit differently every time? If there appears to be no shot pattern, then be wary of poaching! The inconsistency of where the ball is being hit does not allow you to be that aggressive. You truly have to wait until the precise moment before you make a move. When the opponent that is hitting the ball is moving away from the middle of court, don’t poach. Poaching in this scenario will get you passed down the alley.
The Sound November / December 2017 / January 2018
Timing Your Poach
You should make the move to poach when the ball bounces on your opponents’ side and just prior to your opponents’ contact with the ball. At this moment, your opponent is most likely committed to the shot and also not aware of any movement on the opposite side of the court, which is a great thing for you, the poacher!
Where to Hit the Volley
It’s the perfect time to poach, so where should you hit the ball so they can’t get it? With two players on the other side of the net, it is already difficult to hit the ball so the opponents can’t return the shot. However, there are parts of the court where you should hit your volley that will give you the best chance for success. The first place is toward the other net person, while keeping it low. This person is the closest to you and has to react the quickest, which increases your chances of winning the point. Your second option is the middle of the court. This is the biggest part of the court and the easiest target, however there is some risk involved, because the baseline player may have time to react to this shot.
Where Not to Hit the Volley
Don't ever hit to the baseline player during a poach! Remember, you must be aggressive and attempt to hit this ball to win the point! When you hit the ball to the baseliner, it allows the opposing team to stay in the point because the baseline player has plenty of time to react. It also leaves the side that you came from open, which completely defeats the purpose of poaching.
Fake Poach
Want to keep your opponents guessing? Throw in a fake poach! A fake poach is when you make your opponents believe that you are going to poach, by making a quick gesture to the center of the court, and then maintaining your current position at the net. This causes the opposing player to change their mind about their strategy. They may initially be thinking about going cross court to your partner, but as they perceive you to be poaching, they may in turn hit the ball down the line directly to you at the net. This should give you an opportunity to put the ball away. The fake poach is especially effective when the returner hits great returns cross court.

Poaching is an important strategy to consider as a way to gain control of the middle of the court. You can use poaching not only as a means to be aggressive and ultimately win the point, but also to get into your opponents’ head. So…when are YOU going to do it? Don’t get caught standing still at the net…poach already! Vernon Gettone, Jr. Head Tennis Professional

NEW COURSE RENOVATION
Number 13 Fairway
The renovation of the New Course is moving along and fortunately was not hampered too greatly by the hurricane. Our official opening date will be advised within the next few weeks. The New Course will be a signature feature of Broken Sound in its use of state-of-the-art technology and processes including: GRASS: Latitude 36 Bermuda grass turf is being used on the whole golf course, because it has superior traits, including better wear tolerance, better cold tolerance, and a higher shoot density. BUNKERS: The bunkers are two-thirds finished, and we are using the newest bunker sand available, called G-Angle sand, which is testing far superior to the old version. GREENS: Cutting edge technology is being used on our greens, which holds our nutrients and moisture in the soil longer to keep them from getting flushed out quickly. IRRIGATION: The irrigation system installed, IC system from Rainbird, is the newest and leads the standards in the golf course industry. It gives us the capability to controlling everything from our smart phones, including the pump station. TEES: The New Course also has two new sets of tees to accommodate the golfers, giving them more options and allowing for a more enjoyable round of golf for our Members and their guests. PRACTICE AREA: The practice area on the range has been increased, which allows people to practice on the same conditions as the golf course.

Summer Maintenance The summer ‘downtime’ at Broken Sound Club is filled with many maintenance projects. Here you can see Juan Rosario sanding out scratches on the Bar in the Main Club. In addition to the major project of regrassing The New Course, many other projects were either completed or will be completed, including: • • • • • • • •
New steam generators New carpet for the Tennis Shop New carpet in the Ladies’ Locker Room New dishwasher at the Old Course Painting Cell Tower construction among the trees at the Old Course Addition of two (2) Tesla charging stations Furniture touch-up painting and repair
As there are so many everyday maintenance items that need repair and replacement, there will likely be items we may not see. We will not be one bit insulted if you see something not quite right. Please bring it to our attention. A hundred pairs of eyes are always better than one pair.
