National Library Week is a time to celebrate what our public libraries mean to the community and to recognize that whether you work, play or just visit Broward County, Broward County Libraries has something for you. Broward County Libraries lead by leveling the playing field, offering economic opportunities by providing access to technology such as mobile internet devices and laptop computers. We also offer technology training like free computer classes, along with free job coaching and resume-writing assistance. We lead our next generation of learners into successful futures by giving them a head start through early literacy programs and resources such as the Active Learning Center at Main Library and our AWE Early Literacy Stations, which are located in 14 of our libraries. We lead by promoting health and wellbeing in the community with free exercise and nutrition programs such as Get Healthy Inside and Out, as well as free fitness classes, health-related books and videos. We lead by offering cultural enrichment by hosting events such as January’s highly successful Chalk Lit Fest at Main Library along with our full calendar of art exhibits, performances, concerts and more. Finally, we lead by providing everyone in Broward – and anyone born in Broward – access to our free digital library card, which can be used to download (and stream) free music, eBooks, magazines, TV shows and more. We’re partnering with Broward County Parks and Recreation and with Broward County Transit to bring library services and resources to park visitors and commuters. We’ve got more exciting initiatives, programs and services planned for the future. We invite you to follow us and see where Broward County Libraries can lead you.

Sincerely,

~ Kelvin Watson

Arthur Marchetta, Jr. “Libraries are filled with undiscovered treasures for families,” says attorney Arthur Marchetta, Jr., who has been practicing civil and criminal law in South Florida since 1986. What was the Marchetta family’s first stop before their trip to Italy last year? They headed straight for the NSU – Alvin Sherman Library, one of his two favorite go-to libraries. While he and his wife poured over enticing travel magazines, their son Nicholas, then age seven, enjoyed a ton of toys in the play area. Oddly enough, Marchetta discovered a curious connection between his family and Alvin Sherman, who was a bomber pilot in World War ll. Family research on Marchetta’s part revealed that both his uncle and great uncle, serving as gunners, navigators, and bombardiers, were comrades of Alvin Sherman. All three men were flying in England at the same time, all three were from Brooklyn, NY, and all three successfully completed 35 missions.

“Libraries are filled with undiscovered treasures for families.”

Arthur Marchetta Jr., at work at the Dania Beach Branch Library

As library lovers and traditional users, the Marchetta family checks out books and occasionally DVDs, especially for Nicholas, who is an enthusiastic reader. The branch they most consistently use is the Dania Beach Paul DeMaio Branch, which is close to home and offers everything they could ask for, including a top-notch staff. The Dania Beach staff came in for lots of praise from Marchetta, especially for serving the community-at-large with such versatility. “The staff caters to a lot of different folks… all ages, ethnicities, income levels. Always something for everyone.” Marchetta enjoys his library as a peaceful oasis where he can retreat and work without the interruptions and distractions of his busy law office. “I sit on the north side of the library, where it is usually calm.” Says Marchetta, “In addition to being a great place to enjoy tranquility and quiet concentration, the library can be a cool place to hang out and explore.” He notes a lot of activity on library computers and remarks, “It’s a great thing for people who don’t have a computer of their own at home.” Another big draw he sees at Dania Beach Branch, his library home of the past four years, is novel programming. “This branch really offers some unusual activities,” referring to offbeat activities like ukulele lessons, LEGO tournaments, Reiki Meditation Circle, Beatles Yoga and West African Dance and Drumming. “Libraries are being used increasingly like gathering places rather than just quiet study rooms. What’s nice is that at Dania there is always a nice balance. The staff – who are GREAT – keep things in check with a light touch.”
