THE 8TH ANNUAL
What’s Your Story? Summer at Your Library, our annual summer learning program, kicks off June 1st at the Children’s BookFest at North Regional/Broward College Library. This year’s theme, “A Universe of Stories,” invites all of us to step outside of our comfort zone to explore and connect with the stories that surround us via learning, reading and attending amazing free library events. Everyone from babies to seniors is encouraged to register at Broward.org/Library/Summer to participate and win great prizes. This summer, we’re also offering you the chance to tell and share your own stories. We’ve launched BiblioBoard, a free, online e-publishing service that lets you create, format, publish and share your original eBooks. Our Veterans History Project at Weston Library provides a place for those who’ve served our country to capture, preserve and archive their memories. During May and June, we’ll also have a host of classes, workshops, panel and literary discussions – including my Director’s Book Club – where we can connect personally and creatively to share our views and ourselves. We’re also looking forward to events such as AARLCC-Con on May 11th and the upcoming South Florida Book Festival in July, where we can experience the stories of nationally and locally acclaimed artists, authors and illustrators live and up close. Summer is also the time when we encourage our community’s children and teens to write their own stories of success and achievement. Free summer STEM activities and hands-on demos of high-tech equipment provide access to the tools they’ll need to succeed in tomorrow’s job market. Our Gear to Go program lets anyone with a Broward County Library card check out cutting-edge gear including our new MERGE Cubes and Headsets, which let you hold and interact with 3D objects via virtual/ augmented reality and digital tablets, including Playaway Launchpad tablets that come pre-loaded with special apps just for kids. We’ll also be hosting free events all summer long that provide enrichment and are designed to kick start the imagination and open up a universe of possibilities. This summer, explore a universe of stories – and write your own – with Broward County Library.
Sincerely,
Kelvin Watson Broward County Library Director

MAY/JUNE TITLE:
The Library Book by Susan Orlean On April 28, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public Library. As the moments passed, the patrons and staff who had been cleared out of the building realized this was not the usual fire alarm.

My Library Story:
Emmanuel Carrie
National Guard veteran and professional realtor Emmanuel Carrie is finding that his Veteran Connect Hot Spot is literally unlocking doors and ushering in sales for him. “The Hot Spot super-powered my technology – I get more access, and I get it more quickly!” Emmanuel was referring to Broward County Library’s Veteran Hotspot Program, which he discovered entirely by accident. “I initially started going to the Library in Coral Springs just to find a quiet space to work on my resume. Then I inadvertently stumbled upon a flyer that read “Free WIFI for Veterans!” That flier was a game-changer. Through the Veteran Connect Hotspot Program, active military members and their dependents can check out free WiFi hotspots at 11 library locations throughout Broward County with valid military identification. The free hotspots provide unlimited access to T-Mobile’s 4G LTE network and increase access to information and technology.
“I am immensely grateful for the resources from Broward County Library” As Emmanuel explains, “The Hot Spot makes a tremendous impact in my daily business process as a real estate agent. It gives me the flexibility to browse homes on the road with my laptop, access properties with eKey lock systems and to answer any question my clients would have onthe-spot.” Emmanuel’s Veteran’s Hot Spot makes transactions happen. “One time my cell phone signal was low, but the device is lightning fast and allowed me to pull up the code from my laptop and get the investor in to see and purchase the property.” His clients are very important to Emmanuel, because most are fellow veterans and service people. Emmanuel is a member of VAREP, the Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals, which is a nationwide non-profit and HUD-approved organization whose mission is to increase sustainable homeownership, financial-literacy education, VA loan awareness, and economic opportunity for the active-military and veteran communities. Emmanuel told us, “I am immensely grateful for the resources from Broward County Library,” including the Welcome Home career training class he attended at North Regional Library. Topping his list of professional goals is helping fellow veterans become property owners and possess a tangible stake in the country.
