LIBRARY DIRECTOR’S BOOK CLUB JANUARY/FEBRUARY TITLE:

Director’s

MESSAGE

The start of a new year – even better, a new decade – is a time to look back and lean forward. We’re starting off the year with the NEA Big Read 2020, a communitywide reading program encouraging everyone to come together to read and discuss this year’s title, A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines. The book explores themes of social justice, racial inequality and human dignity, these timely topics that touch all of our lives. I personally invite you participate, read the book and join us at one of our many Big Read events, including ArtLit 2020 on January 11th. ArtLit 2020 is our free community celebration of art and literature held at the Pompano Beach Library and Cultural Center. We’ll also be celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Black History Month with enriching programs that will engage and challenge, how we view not only ourselves but the world. This includes our community forum “Conversations” series, now held at three locations, which offers thoughtprovoking guest speakers and lively discussions. Cultural events such as the upcoming “Write Your Story II” literary expo invite you to express your thoughts while our many free exhibits, concerts and performances – such as the Moonlight Tales adult storytelling event and Blues School 2020 – provide a space to enjoy the creative endeavors of others. As for leaning forward, we’re introducing new initiatives in 2020 that use cuttingedge technology to change and improve our customer’s lives. This includes Project Welcome, a new program that shows newcomers that Broward County Library plays an essential role in the community and that the library is a safe, welcoming, free place to access resources and services that can make adjusting to their new home easier. Through Project Welcome, Broward County Library introduced the use of Amazon Echo devices at public service desks to provide customer assistance in multiple languages, the first library in the U.S. to do so. Beginning mid2020, Broward County Library will be the first library in Florida to offer virtual visits to the African American Research Library and Cultural Center’s Special Collections, which will expand access to these important acquisitions so that anyone with a computer can view them via a specially curated 3D exhibit. In 2020, Broward County Library will continue to build on our appreciation of the past and the contributions of those who came before, while recognizing that our success depends on embracing the future. We’ll continue to transform today and thrive tomorrow, moving forward on our vision of being the 21stcentury library that serves and inspires all.

Sincerely, KELVIN
