NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK APRIL 3-9 Libraries are places where communities connect— to things like broadband, classes, books, movies, video games and more. But most importantly, libraries connect us to each other.

MESSAGE

April is one of my favorite months, not only for the glorious weather but because April 3 - 9 is National Library Week (NLW). This holiday started in 1958 – decades before you could Google anything. This week we thank libraries and librarians for all they do, bringing the information of the world to us. I’ll go on record as saying that even though the internet is handy for looking things up, you can only be 100% sure of accuracy when you are working with a trained information specialist, your librarian. I am proud to be a librarian, and so proud of my amazing staff. One of my favorite pleasures is hearing from you about how much you love our library and the people that work here. If you have a favorite service or staff member, would you give me a shout? This year’s NLW theme is “Connect with Your Library” although, of course, your suggestions and comments are always welcome. Let’s connect with your comments, and I hope, also at my Director’s Book Club. I have been thinking of which of the library’s services I would tell you about this month. Rather than tell you about only one service, I’d rather just give you the golden key that unlocks it all. Well, almost all, since we have even more that’s not listed there. But I want to direct your attention to a most delicious alphabet soup – the website’s A to Z Directory. Just scrolling through the many items and services we offer, all absolutely free, will astound you. I can guarantee that no one will know all of them. Surprise yourself and discover something exciting with a click. Libraries are great centers for exploration. You can try new things, experiment, sample, tinker and never spend your own money testing things out. Libraries are wonderful spots to get a feeling for your skills and preferences and talents. Fabulous zones to explore your possibilities are library Creation Stations, with green screen video at five locations. We have a specialty Creation Station for music at Jan Moran Collier City Learning Library, a science/STEM Creation Station at North Lauderdale Saraniero Branch and at Main Library, we have a Creation Station Business lab for entrepreneurs and a second Creation Station for makers. Our librarians can introduce you to all of this and more to assist you with all of the areas where you want to grow your interests and skills. Plus, we have no-cost Gear to Go at multiple library locations. Many customers are paying for items that they don’t realize that they can borrow from the library. Available to check out is fitness equipment, robotic devices, Snap Circuits, LEGO Mindstorms, digital tablets, Playaway Launchpad Learning Tablets, Read-Along Books, musical instruments, MERGE cubes…and so much more. Lucky you – you are surrounded by libraries all over Broward County. Everyone’s favorite genius, Albert Einstein, famously said, “The only thing that you absolutely have to know is the location of the library.” We are easy to find. Come on in and visit us for National Library Week!

Sincerely,

Allison Grubbs
