DIRECTOR’S

Message

January is the time of year when many of us look for a fresh perspective – a new beginning, a new page on the calendar, a different way of looking at life and the world around us. Whether you’re a longtime BCL customer or new to our library system, Broward County Library’s goal is to be your window to new worlds of imagination, investigation and discovery. We offer opportunities to expand your universe just by turning a page, visiting one of our branches, connecting to an online event or exploring our myriad of virtual resources. We’re starting off this year with the NEA Big Read 2021, an initiative encouraging the community to join together in reading and celebrating one selected book title – American Sunrise: Poems by United States Poet Laureate, Joy Harjo. The NEA Big Read features a full month of enriching online programs for all ages centered on the book’s themes of identity, place and culture. Enjoy book discussions, poetry readings, writing classes, storytelling and our signature Big Read event, ArtLit 2021: Rhythms & Rhymes. This free Facebook Live event, held online for the first time ever, brings artists, musicians, crafters and performers to you wherever you are for an amazing celebration for all ages. Explore your own creativity with two exciting, free upcoming workshop opportunities starting this month. The African American Research Library and Cultural Center hosts the new Lifting & Advancing Black Business (LABB) course series, Showcasing through the Lens - The Business of Photography from Concept to Application, which focuses on using photography to advance and promote your business or yourself. Aspiring authors can work with writing professionals at our new Pen to Page Writing Workshop Series and then use our free BiblioBoard service to create and professionally format their own books. Who knows? Maybe you’ll follow in the footsteps of Fort Lauderdale author Craig Moody, featured on page 11, one of Broward County Library’s local author success stories whose novel The ’49 Indian, was a Florida Indie Author Project regional winner. Creator or consumer, observer or actor, Broward County Library offers events, services and resources that turn heads, change minds and that I’m sure will offer you a new take for 2021.

Sincerely,

Kelvin Watson Broward County Library Director
