DIRECTOR’S
Message
With COVID-19 and its impact on all of our lives, the importance of library services to the community is more prevalent each and every day. I know that many of you are interested in when BCL locations will be physically open, and I can tell you that we are in the process of planning to open soon. In planning for and going through the reopening process, BCL has had to reimagine and redesign for a changed society. For example, the current academic school year has presented challenges for our youth and the Library needs to provide supportive solutions. A big hurdle for many students is access to the technology and educational materials to succeed academically. Broward County Library can help with programs, services, tutors, books and lendable digital tablets to overcome these obstacles and barriers. One of our programs is Community Share, which gives Broward County Public School (BCPS) students the ability to borrow eBooks/audiobooks from both their school and BCL. BCPS students gain this access with a BCL Digital Direct Card, a virtual card that allows students 24/7 access to the Library’s digital resources. Through our Gear to Go program BCL provides access to tablets that can be checked out for up to six months. We also offer Playaway Launchpad Tablets for kids, which are pre-loaded with high-quality, adfree apps for educational fun. Both tablets are now available for pick-up via our Walk-up/Drive-up Service. I’m looking forward to seeing our customers again and extending all the service upgrades that COVID-19 inspired. Walk-up/Drive-up Service, which started as our idea of a COVID-19 temporary social distancing service accommodation, will continue in our hybrid library service model, even after reopening. That’s also true for our online events and programming, which customers of all ages have taken advantage of and shared. Our challenges have only made us better. My promise to you is that we’ll continue to look and find ways to improve your customer experience. Regardless of our interaction face-to-face or virtually, BCL wants to provide you and your family with a world-class, 24/7 library service that wows you.
Sincerely, Kelvin Watson Broward County Library Director
