Director ’s MESSAGE
It’s a myth that George Washington never told a lie, but it’s true that he failed to return two books he checked out in 1789 from the New York Society Library. According to historical sources, his late fines would now be over $300,000! That’s sticker shock for anyone, even a President.
I am happy to tell you that our library is no longer charging late fines for overdue materials and your existing late fines were removed. We want you to regard the library as a friendly, understanding, welcoming place and visit every chance you get.
It’s wonderful to see the results of this policy change in action. Our library, with full backing of the Broward County Board of Commissioners, decided that removing barriers to library use was a public service so valuable that we could not put a price on it. Certainly, not the dollar value of past due fines. Now that late fines have been wiped off the record, I’m being contacted by people to say that they have started using the library again. Nothing could make the holidays happier for me.
Whatever beautiful tradition you celebrate this season, learn more about it from the library catalog, which has materials in all media. We honor holiday traditions with all sorts of programs as well, from musical and theatre performances, exhibits, storytimes, book discussions, movies, gift and card crafting and more.
Events such as Holidays Around the World - Many Countries, Many Stories and the Winter Holiday Community Celebration offer us a way to share diverse traditions. A great favorite for everyone, year after year, is the Holiday Interactive Train Exhibit featuring the Florida Citrus Model Train Society. Check our Events Calendar for details and let’s have some fun.
If holiday stress is catching up to you, we have the antidote to that. Roll out your yoga mat or have a seat for chair yoga at one of our in-person or online classes. We also offer Coloring by the Sea at our Beach Branch, which sits right across from the ocean – a fabulous spot for serenity! Online, we bring you Coping with the Holidays, with tips to successfully manage the obligations and emotions associated with this festive but taxing time of year.
Another stress buster is playing games. Any kind of game – chess, video games, Scrabble, puzzles, Lego, Bingo – we’re playing them all in December. Plus, this month we’re on a Bingo binge, celebrating one of America’s favorite pastimes with free Bingo for all ages. Games are tension tamers and brain builders – check the Events calendar for a ton of programs. Incidentally, did you know the library has over 2,000 video games in our collection, waiting for you to check them out?
December is also National Write a Business Plan Month. We’re inviting future entrepreneurs: kids, tweens, teens and new adults for a Game Afternoon to learn about creating a business plan. Adults can visit the Sunrise Dan Pearl Branch computer lab to create a business plan using Microsoft Word. Whatever your venture, we are rooting for your success.
At work or play…my best wishes for the holiday season!
Allison GrubbsSincerely,
