One of my favorite quotes by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. reads “Not everybody can be famous but everybody can be great because greatness is determined by service…you only need a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love.”

Dr. King is right about fame – most of us aren’t winning Super Bowls or picking up Academy Awards. But he’s also right about the potential we all carry within ourselves to achieve greatness and become an everyday hero by serving and helping others. We’re celebrating that spirit of service by starting off 2019 with Broward County Library Reads, a brand-new “One Book, One Community” project that’s all about ordinary people who do extraordinary things. Broward County Library Reads features books by Broward’s own bestselling author Brad Meltzer that celebrate everyday heroes, great events, a writing contest and an opportunity for all of us to connect with each other – no matter our age, background or culture – through reading, discussion and dialogue. How else is Broward County Library celebrating everyday heroes in 2019? We’ll be honoring Dr. King with MLK Day events throughout January and recognizing courage and freedom with Black History Month programs. I also encourage everyone to explore how Broward County Library’s myriad resources and services can help you become an everyday hero to your family, friends, community and yourself. But even heroes need to have fun, and we’ve got you covered with amazing free entertainment offerings in 2019. BCL is featuring the latest technology with the Merge Cube, holographic gear that you can borrow from the library that allows you to physically interact with 3D objects. You can also visit a digital Pop Up Library location in your community and you can check out an ebook instantly – no library card required). We’re also hosting our 2019 Art Lit Festival on January 19 at Pompano Beach Library. It’s a free Broward County Library Reads community celebration of art and literature with live chalk art, canvas art, music, food trucks and fun for all ages as well as the one-year anniversary of the Pompano Beach Library’s opening. I’d like to personally invite each of you to the Art Lit Festival and all of our many free library events, and I hope to see you there.

Sincerely,

Kelvin Watson Broward County Library Director

Veterans History Project Vets and civilians who’ve served in the U.S. military - Record your stories for free with the Broward County Historical Archives! Come in for a taped interview or share your documents, journals, photographs, diaries – anything that tells the story of your military experiences. Copies of taped interviews are given to the veteran and we send another copy to the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress’ American Folklife Center. Library staff will videotape oral history interviews at the Main Library by appointment. If interested in submitting your story, contact Erin Purdy to arrange an interview at 954-357-7363 or epurdy@broward.org.
