2015 Florida Library of the Year
(continued)
The “Bookface” exhibit on display at Main Library. Library of the Year was awarded to Broward County Library as a result of its innovation and dedication to providing excellent first-class service that addresses the changing needs of a tech-savvy society, including the launch of the Creation Station, the first free community makerspace/gadget lab in Broward County. The recipient of the Betty Davis Miller Youth Services Award for Teen Programming, “Show Us Your Bookface,” is an innovative program in which teens had the opportunity to get creative by using book covers to create a merged image of themselves with their favorite book. Hundreds of teens then submitted pictures Broward.org/Library/CreationStation
of themselves to the library to enter the contest and the photos were then used to create an oversized banner that was unveiled at the grand re-opening ceremony of Main Library in December 2014. BCL’s system-wide campaign, “Broward County Libraries Mean Business!” created programming to assist small business and entrepreneurial enterprises as well as raise awareness of the many business-related resources, assistance and support the library has available. It was launched in conjunction with former Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief’s 2014 leadership theme, “Broward Means Business.” Broward.org/Library/Business

Broward County Library: Your Home for Early Learning Find all you need to learn and read! Because you are your child’s first and best teacher, what you do at home – even before your child goes to school – is what will help him or her learn to read and succeed.
AWE Early Literacy Stations
Broward County Library is hosting a series of 8 free “Hot Food Hot Topics / Fresh Food Fresh Ideas” events in partnership with the Broward County Public Schools Office of Parent Engagement and the United Way during July and August. At each event, parents and caregivers will learn effective reading strategies, discover the secrets to creating healthy meals on a budget and find out about community resources to help you become your child’s first teacher. The events will also feature door prizes, fun activities, healthy food samplings and a free book for each participating family!
Early Literacy Stations are touch screen computers designed specifically for early learners from children ages two to those in third grade. Each station comes preloaded with more than 60 games that span multiple curriculum areas – from reading to graphic arts to STEM subjects to music. Visit AF, CC, LL, NL, NO, NR, NW, RV, SR, SW or WR* to see how this new technology supports school readiness, encourages children to explore and learn independently, and cultivates a love of learning. Broward County Library’s Early Learning initiative is funded in part under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the Florida Department of State’s Division of Library and Information Services.

I’m proud to announce that Broward County Library has been named “Library of the Year” by the Florida Library Association. We’re honored to be recognized for our efforts to provide the very best to our customers and community. Broward County Library is continuing our journey on the path to excellence, and I invite all of you to join us on our travels. Our vision is that “Broward County Libraries Division will be the model of the 21st Century Library: Innovative, Creative, Flexible, Inspiring, and Resource Full.” That statement is more than just words on paper – it’s the philosophy that drives BCL to provide more of what our customers want and need. Our 2015 Summer R.E.A.D.ing (Reading, Exploration, Art, Discovery) Program brings information, education and recreation to all citizens of Broward County. We encourage everyone in our community – children, teens and adults – to be a part of the library’s summer fun. Young people are provided with prizes and incentives to read and learn all summer long, a great way for parents and caregivers to minimize summer “brain drain” in students. Adults can also register to read and win prizes (and we have some great ones this year). On top of that, the Summer R.E.A.D.ing Program features free events, classes, arts-andcrafts, movies and more to spark the imagination and escape the ordinary. The Summer R.E.A.D.ing Program grows each year, with 2015 shaping up to be our best yet. Visit Broward.org/Library/Read to learn more. Broward County Library is also launching “I’m a BCL WoW Kid,” an Early Learning initiative designed to help parents and caregivers be their child’s first teacher. With grant funding, BCL will be able to offer more programs and resources to help every child become reading ready. Broward County Library’s Early Learning initiative is funded in part under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the Florida Department of State’s Division of Library and Information Services. In honor of the Summer Reading Program’s comic book theme, I am coming to you in avatar form this month! I hope you have a SUPER summer and take advantage of all Broward County Libraries has to offer during this sizzling season.
