The winter holidays are over but not the fun! March 2024 at Broward County Library (BCL) is packed with good things that I can’t wait to share with you. As you know, we’re celebrating our 50th Anniversary and pulling out all the stops. Join me on YouTube for a personal invitation!
March is Women’s History Month, and I am so grateful for the incredible women in my life. To celebrate the achievements of women, we have put together an amazing slate of events along this
year’s theme of “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.” Check the Events Calendar for all of our great programs, including the 50th Anniversary Scholars Speakers Series. On-theme topics of the series include fascinating talks on Black Feminist Literature, Female Superheroes and Women’s History: Feisty, Fabulous Females of Florida.
You will certainly find an amazing woman in the selection for my Director’s Book Club this month. Master Slave Husband Wife is the extraordinary, true story of married couple Ellen and William Craft and their daring deception to escape slavery in 1848 America. I won’t spoil this thrilling tale of selfemancipation by giving more detail here, but I look forward to your reaction to Ilyon Woo’s exciting book. It is a New York Times “10 Best Books of 2023,” with good reason – it will stun you.
Are you ready to rock with us at another mega festival this month? Let me invite you to the first annual Africana Arts & Humanities Festival (formerly known as the South Florida Book Festival), offering live music, exciting authors in person and powerful community conversations. Be part of our history -- this is a new offering created by the African American Research Library and Cultural Center!
The free Africana Arts & Humanities Festival, running March 21-23, celebrates 50 years of Black art, history and culture as BCL celebrates 50 years of serving the people of Broward County. With a theme of “Rootedness,” the Festival embraces the spirit of the 1970s by revisiting the work of Black creatives who emerged in this era. All events are free and open to the public with registration, apart from the “Destination Roots” reception on Friday, March 22 which is a paid, ticketed, adult-only event.
The library is full of opportunities and privileges, with your library card as the key that unlocks it all. We have so many great card designs to choose from, it’s hard to pick the one you love best – unless you’re
a Florida Panthers ice hockey fan! This colorful card is yours for the asking at any Circulation desk, free of charge.
One thing I find the need to remind people of is that all our fabulous programs, concerts, films, lessons, festivals, crafting, loans, lectures – it’s all free!
Instruction and supplies are included. (The rare exception will be noted.) So please don’t hesitate to take advantage of all we offer. Libraries are truly the most democratic, wide-open institution that we have. Libraries embody the theme of equity, diversity and inclusion every month of every
year. And that is something to really celebrate, regardless of gender!
Sincerely,
BROWARD COUNTY LIBRARY DIRECTOR

Women have always been leaders at Broward County Library (BCL), from its earliest days to the present. Three notable examples from among hundreds of exceptional employees were selected for our magazine cover:
Jean Trebbi (d. 2023) began her 30-year career with BCL in 1974, joining as a reference librarian and advancing to head of Main Library. Her many achievements include creating and hosting the cable TV show Library Edition; co-founding the Key West Literary Seminar; founding the Florida Center for the Book, the first affiliate of the Library of Congress’ Center for the Book; and curating an important collection of over 300 alphabet books, which she donated to the Bienes Center for the Book in Main Library.
Skye Patrick came to BCL from the Queens Public Library, serving as Director from 2013 to 2016, the second African American, the first openly LGBTQ person, and first woman to hold the position. Her three years were marked by a surge in technology-based initiatives, including the opening of Creation Station makerspaces at Main and regional libraries and Creation Station Business at Main Library. This emphasis, coupled with early learning and quality programming initiatives, brought multiple awards, including Florida 2015 Library of the Year from the Florida Library Association.
Joann Block joined BCL in 1978 as the librarian in charge of Bookmobile Service, later heading Disability Services for people who are blind and homebound, a position she held for 25 years. Through her grant writing and leadership, the burgeoning section for Talking Books and Books by Mail modernized from hand processing to computerization. Her bold initiatives included hosting a weekly WLRN Radio Reading Service show The Loquacious Librarian and developing annual events such as the Disabilities Expo; White Cane Awareness Day; and Meet the Narrators of recorded books from Insight for the Blind.
