mylibrarystory “What I wish,” says newcomer Atsa, “was that someone had been at the airport, the minute I stepped off the plane, to hand me a brochure for the library!” Atsa left everything in November 2016 to come to America with two suitcases. Her first five months as a selfdescribed “homesick immigrant” immediately turned around when she entered the library. Atsa’s aunt, a Los Angeles psychiatrist, advised her: “You need to go to a library right away. There are good people there to help you.” Sure enough, Atsa found her library family in Plantation, at the West Regional Library. “This library is a part of my life now,” says Atsa. “The tranquility, the atmosphere, educated people…it’s never boring!” Atsa is a stranger to boring. As a child, she survived the terrifying war that broke out between Iran and Iraq in 1980. Once a student of the top watercolorist in Iran, at age 18 she helped support her family during the years of crisis by selling her work and giving art lessons. Against the odds, she earned a degree in English Literature from Shahid Beheshti University in 2011; her next stop was an artist’s life in Malaysia; finally, in 2017, entry into the United States. Since June 2017, Atsa has been attending English Café on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and raves, “The staff and volunteers are excellent, marvelous people.” Topping the list of those Atsa credits with being a tremendous help in expanding her credentials and acclimation to

Atsa standing in front of her art.
American life is Mary Cassell, Librarian Senior at West Regional Library, who runs the English Café program. “Part of English Café is empowering students to present on their countries of origin, skills and professions,” Cassell explains. “People want to share their cultures and professions like ambassadors,” describing her English Café students cross-sampling everything from belly dance to a field trip to an Indian restaurant. When the English Café tackled this year’s Big Read selection, Love in the Time of Butterflies, Atsa shared by teaching a class in which she asked fellow students to re-design the book cover, resulting in an art display at the branch. Atsa is active in a number of West Regional programs. “I take the Beading with Ms. June class, which I love, because I know that I have to be among English speakers to practice,” she explains. Her outgoing, sunny personality won her many friends in class and led to becoming a volunteer art instructor at Brookdale Community Center. Universal Class, which offers over 500 free classes, is Atsa’s favorite online resource for business and pleasure. Not a surprising choice for an artist with five degrees in Persian calligraphy who speaks French, Arabic, English and Farsi (Persian). Her next language will be Spanish, which the library offers as El Club Spanish Classes. Thus far, she has enjoyed Universal Class courses in Personality Development, Acrylic Painting, Basic English and Body Language. Atsa’s first classes at the library were in the computer center: an employability workshop and one on resume writing, which have helped with her ongoing job search. Mary Cassell introduced Atsa to the National League of American Pen Women, which accepted her as a member and exhibited her art in Skolnick Community Center in Pompano Beach. As an award-winning, internationally recognized painter and the daughter of a novelist, Atsa sees the world through an artistic and literary lens. She says she treasures the library for making her feel at home in her adopted country and for making her moments here count. “The story of our lives is a book,” she says. “Each day a page is torn off. We do not have time to waste.”
