Greetings! Director ’s MESSAGE
May is a grand month for many things, like honoring and exploring the cultures around us. One thing that really makes Broward County a standout place to live is its diversity. I embrace the wonderful range of people that I get to interact with and learn about daily. The library is also that kind of place.
This month is Haitian Heritage Month, and its special day is May 18, Haitian Flag Day. This day is celebrated each year to commemorate the creation of the flag during the Haitian
revolution in 1803. On May 18, the African American Research Library and Cultural Center will partner with the Haitian Chamber of Commerce for one of our Haitian Flag Day programs. You’re invited! (As with all the events I mention, check the Events Calendar to find dates and times using a key word and a date range.)
It’s also Asian American Pacific Islander Desi American Month, with “Desi” representing South Asian-identifying people. India is the largest country in South Asia, and a source of endless fascination for centuries with its many languages, religions and ethnic groups, each with a unique style of dance. Join us for a free, live performance of Dancing Through India at the NSU-Alvin Sherman Library as Rhythms School of Dance, takes us on a journey of discovery.
serve on the Supreme Court and a powerful pioneer in every sense. Connect with her legacy in all formats in the BCL catalog to see why she is so admired.
We’ve got a great roster of JAHM programs, including Portrait of a Bubby, presented by humorist and writer Ellyn Laub; Reading Is You Festival: Dine and Learn with Rabbi Steven Moss; Jews of the Wild West; Jewish American Films; and a live concert, A Tribute to Broadway with Jewish Composers.
May is also Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM), a time to celebrate the countless contributions of Jewish Americans throughout our nation’s history. To share something personal with you, one of my role models is the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Associate Justice of the Court, from 1993 until her death in 2020. She was the first Jewish woman to
In the midst of the fun we’re having this month, let us always remember that our freedom was paid for with the ultimate sacrifice of service men and women of all backgrounds. Since 1868, Memorial Day has been a federal holiday to honor those who perished while serving in the United States Armed Forces. In remembrance, Lauderhill Towne Centre Library is offering a floral arrangement workshop on May 24 to create beautiful bouquets that the families of fallen service members can pick up the next day and use to decorate their loved one’s memorial.
The Second World War is the backdrop for The Air Raid Book Club by Annie Lyons, my selection for the Director’s Book Club meeting this month. It’s a wonderful historical novel set
in London circa 1938 during the Blitz. Please join us either inperson or online and discuss it with me!
Finally, get ready for one great summer with BCL. We are revving up for Summer at Your Library . Our theme this year is Adventure Begins at Your
Library, and our libraries have so many amazing experiences and events planned. Customers of every age, at every location, will find programs that make the summer fly in a flurry of fun, learning and doing. Stay tuned!
Wishing you a marvelous May!
Sincerely,
Allison Grubbs

Shaping the Future of Community Engagement
Adrienne Chadwick Community Engagement Manager
The term “community engagement” (CE) emerged in the 1960’s during the civic engagement movement. Interaction between individuals, organizations, and government transitioned from a passive relationship to an active partnership. Citizens worked together to promote democracy, participate in collective decisionmaking, initiate problemsolving to address social and political issues and increase shared responsibilities for the public good. Since then, community engagement has woven its way through industries and is now a significant component of many businesses today.
In 2017, Broward County Libraries (BCL) launched its Community Engagement Section. Focus areas include adult services, youth services, literacy programs, volunteer programs, advantage marketing, digital initiatives, and community outreach, which are managed across the Libraries Division’s 37 branches. This regional department initiates largescale events like the Storybook Festival and Conference on Children’s Literature; systemwide initiatives such as Veteran Resource Corners and Career
Online High School; and annual library programs not limited to Summer Learning and the Big Read. Many representatives from our expert team have served Broward Libraries for multiple decades with a combined 260 years of experience caring for communities in Broward County.
As we approach our 10th year as a Community Engagement department, we look forward to concentrating on five strategic goals inspired by research on best practices from across the nation. These concepts will allow BCL to continue to grow and connect with new audiences as the needs and interests of our residents and visitors change.
Community Centered methods will ensure that our programs and initiatives directly address community needs. We will meet the community where they are to understand the nuances, trends and interests of our residents.
An increased Presence and Participation will allow the team to become more welcoming and accessible to the community and actively participate in community events and spaces where people live, work, and play. It will ensure that library services are accessible to both current users and non-users of the library system.
Facilitating Dialogue and Diversity of Thought is valuable to create a space for community members to discuss and learn together. According to American Alliance of Libraries (ALA) “Empowering
community members to share their stories and experiences offers a platform for the public to express their perspectives and connect with others.”
Maximizing Strategic Partnerships will strengthen the foundation of existing relationships and forge new connections that will enhance visibility, brand awareness, and build an ongoing stream of new library users. Collaborating with local organizations, schools, and businesses to expand the library’s reach, align goals and maximize impact.
A Data-Driven approach to decision-making will use statistical information to measure the impact of programs, initiatives, and services. This will allow us to consider various needs and opinions of our community which will contribute to well-being and empowerment.
As BCL continues to adopt innovation, cultivate trust, and empower communities we will become stronger and more resilient. Together we will nurture meaningful connections and collaboratively shape a vibrant future of Broward County. Have thoughts or recommended opportunities for Community Engagement? Please share them with us by email at communityengagement@broward. org. We are always looking for great volunteers. Please consider participating as a volunteer with BCL to bring this vision to life.
