A Note from Laura
Good news! As of October 2016, Broward County Libraries has added 134 total service hours per week at libraries throughout the county. We will soon add an additional 71 service hours, for a total of 205 new weekly service hours systemwide. This amounts to an additional 10,000 hours per year for Broward County Library services. What does this mean to you? More service hours means more Laura Connors children’s story times, more literacy and language programs and more cultural, educational and recreational events for all ages. It means more opportunities to access free books, magazines, movies, music, computers, 3D printers and resources for small businesses and entrepreneurs. It means more chances to change more lives. Best of all? Within our new service model, Broward County Libraries has been able to extend our hours without increasing our budget. We’ve launched the innovative Fast Lane checkout system, which provides an easier, quicker way to check out library materials and frees up our library staff to provide better service to our customers. This means more of what you want from Broward County Libraries, when you want it. That’s our good news for now, but we’re looking forward to bringing you even better news in the near future. We’ll keep you updated as we continue our progress throughout the rest of 2016 and into the year beyond.

Annual Books ’n’ Bears Program Celebrates 30 Years At Broward County Library, the dream of a generous man named Bert S. Harmon has made the gift of a book and a teddy bear possible for thousands of needy youngsters over the past 30 years. Because of him, the heartwarming Books ‘n’ Bears at the Holidays program brings holiday magic – and a book and a bear – each year to 2,000 children ages 2 to 4 at library parties throughout the county. In 1986, Harmon, an active library volunteer, began donating books to the children enrolled in child care centers in disadvantaged neighborhoods. He delivered 200 books personally in visits to the child-care centers. The next year, Harmon added a stuffed animal. In time, Books ‘n’ Bears at the Holidays evolved into a series of parties for the children. Bert Harmon, a successful lawyer with a big heart for children in need, died in 1991 at age 85. His dream came true in ways he would be proud of. The Broward Public Library Foundation accepts donations to the Books’n’Bears program via telephone at 954-3577382 and online at bplfoundation.org/ booksandbears
