STORY

In 1918, the year of volunteer Ruth Weinstein’s birth, hers was one of the top ten baby names. In her hometown of Manhattan, New York, a pound of round steak cost 37 cents, five pounds of flour cost 34 cents and consumers paid 58 cents for a pound of butter. If inflation is pretty astonishing, so is Ruth. Recently, Ruth Weinstein’s many admirers, fellow volunteers and Friends of the North Regional/Broward College Library packed the lobby to celebrate her 100th birthday at a “pop-up” celebration. Local luminaries queued up to say a few words about this remarkable volunteer, who is excited to work at the library. “Ruth was one of the original Friends Gift Shop volunteers when we opened 24 years ago” marvels Community Library Manager, Senior, Ronnie Kowal, one of Ruth’s many fans and head of North Regional/BC Library. Among those on hand to mark the occasion were Coconut Creek City Commissioner Mikkie Belvedere; Broward County Libraries Assistant Director Carol Russo and Community Engagement Officer Roslyn Dean; Friends of North Regional/BC Library Gift Shop and Coordinator and Past President Dianne Sammons; and Friends of North Regional/BC Library Board members.

Ruth Weinstein and Community Library Manager, Senior, Ronnie Kowal

“What an honor and pleasure to celebrate Ruth Weinstein on her 100th birthday!” says Kowal, speaking for all who know Ruth. “She is an upbeat, inspirational presence at the library, giving back to her community! We love her and appreciate her dedication.” When Ruth says, “I like to be of service” that is an understatement from someone who has served all her life, beginning as a young Army wife and Army employee in California, Utah and Washington. Ruth later worked for the Board of Education in New York, and was the powerhouse behind campaigning to have Martin Van Buren High School, and later a summer camp, built in Queens, New York. “I’ve never been a person to sit back and tell others they can do something. I do it myself and it’s done!” “I’m happy every Thursday!” says Ruth of her weekly shift in the Friends Gift Shop, where they sell a little of everything, including coffee and snacks, to underwrite library programs. “It’s a great outlet where I see young people and new people. I love young people, seeing what they wear, listening to what they like.” Longevity is not something Ruth inherited from her parents, who both died young. It can certainly be attributable to her indomitable, positive attitude. “I’m thankful for where I am, to have lived to see this birthday and for my family. I’m thankful for every good day”, says Ruth. “A little ache or pain doesn’t matter. I always enjoy whatever I do”. Staff and customers at the North Regional/BC Library are thankful for Ruth. Stop by on Thursdays between 12 and 2PM. You can be Ruth’s customer and discover why!
