Director ’s MESSAGE
What a month we have ahead of us! There are so many special occasions at the library in October.
It’s TeenTober, a month-long celebration designed to encourage teens to be enthusiastic readers and library users. We’re all in, all the time! Our Youth Services staff is devoted to motivating teens year-round, and youth of all ages have their own events page on the library’s website. Did you know that there’s a librarian-run Studio for teens only at Main Library?
The Studio is a creative safe space exclusively for teens ages 13-19, equipped with video production gear, musical instruments, stateof-the-art computers, and video games. It also offers hands-on design tools like Cricut machines, a heat press, and Artist 16.6 pro drawing tablets, plus collaborative workshops on social media, performance art, and much more.
As you can see, we are very invested in teens participating at the library, and I invite teens to join a Teen Advisory Board to give us their unique perspective on the programs, events, books and gear that they want from the library. Teens are always welcome to volunteer and earn their community service hours with us, gaining the work experience that enhances a résumé and boosts college applications, one more area where we have them covered with Ready for College.
Another highlight on my calendar is National Friends of Libraries Week, October 16-22, honoring our beloved, indispensable army of volunteers that raise money for special programs and support for the library in countless ways. The Friends hold book fairs, run gift shops, help at events and advocate with elected representatives. There is a Friends of Broward County Library group at almost every local branch, ready to welcome you as a new member.
October is also National Women’s Small Business Month and celebrates how far female entrepreneurs have come. In 1972, women owned 4.6% of all businesses in this country; today, they own 42%, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration, which also notes that until 1988, women needed a male relative to co-sign if they wanted to apply for a business loan.
At Broward County Library, we support personal financial advancement for everyone. For starters, check out the three-part series on Starting a Small Business at the Sunrise Dan Pearl Branch this month, and look through the many facets of the Business & Law resource page. And don’t overlook the continuous support and opportunities from the Creation Station Business Coworking HubSmall Business Incubator at Main Library, offering free meeting and workspace overlooking downtown Fort Lauderdale, along with high-tech equipment, classes and events, business resources for leads, and expert assistance for creating and growing your business. Main Library is also a Patent & Trademark Resource Center to assist with copyright needs.
Certainly not least on the list... Halloween is coming, and it’s the perfect time to introduce you to one of my family members, Magical Mr. Mistoffelees! He’s been angling to get his picture in the newsletter since we got here, so here he is, telling me to “Turn! Turn!” as he helps navigate our move from Washington State to Broward County. As he always says, “You don’t need a GPS when you have a C-A-T!”
The Magical Mr. Mistoffelees is a chatty, opinionated guy who is a tad conceited about his grand literary name, taken from T.S. Eliot’s book of poems, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. Fittingly, October 29 is National Cat Day, created to bring awareness to cats that need to be rescued, and properly renamed, each year. Treat yourself this Halloween – get a membership to the Friends and a fur-faced reading buddy!
Allison GrubbsSincerely,
BROWARD COUNTY LIBRARY DIRECTOR MR. MISTOFFELEESFreda talks about the Spanish Language
Language is the most beautiful and fundamental structure that sustains a culture. The Spanish language continues to evolve and is the symbol that unites and identifies Hispanics in the United States. It is the language that we speak in our homes, in our social life and in our public life in unison with the official language, English. Broward County Library understands the language needs of Spanish speakers and offers information in Spanish about its services so that first-time visitors will feel welcome. As a
learning center, the library offers programs such as the popular English Café, which help immigrants in their adaptation process to practice conversation in
English. The library also offers courses that can be accessed for free online with the library card to learn other languages. As a cultural center, the library offers high-quality programs that celebrate the Latino culture with a greater emphasis

during Hispanic Heritage Month, but also as part of its regular programming such as children’s bilingual reading programs and reading book clubs for adults. As an information center, the library offers an extensive and wonderful collection in Spanish, with books and films in all its locations, but also in digital format, with very easy access, since just with the magic of a click, the library’s website can be read in Spanish.
