MESSAGE

As we transition from summer’s slow pace to the activity of autumn, our thoughts move from good times and vacations to action lists and agendas. It’s back to business – and busy-ness – for most of us, and Broward County Library is geared up to help you succeed. But, before we say a final goodbye to summer, I want to thank everyone who participated in our 2019 Summer Learning Program. Thousands of readers and learners of all ages tracked their reading and learning goals, attended amazing events, met new friends, won prizes and had an amazing and enriching summer. It was a pleasure to meet so many of you at our library events, including our Library Director’s Book Club and the annual South Florida Book Festival – thank you for making Summer at Your Library 2019 a memorable one! We’re keeping this momentum going into fall, with future-ready and forwardthinking library resources designed for today’s library customer These include new initiatives such as Cultural Conversations at the Center (AARLCC’s new program series) and FLLIbrary (our satellite library location at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport). It also means adding value to our existing services, like computers and technology. Over the summer, we’ve installed Adobe Creative Cloud software to public-use computers so you can access Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat Pro for free. We also now offer JAWS® (Job Access With Speech) screen reader software on public-use computers at 20 library locations so computer users with vision loss can navigate operate computers and navigate the Internet, write a document, read an email and create presentations. Our libraries provide wireless printing, which lets you send a document to print from your device to one of our library printers. Order, print, pick up – easy as 1, 2, 3. Broward County Library’s “Gear to Go” initiative lets you check out and take home fun, free tech equipment like digital tablets (including special Playaway Launchpad Learning Tablets for kids) , virtual reality MERGE Cubes and Headsets, portable Internet hotspots and more. Gear to Go is your chance to try out the latest tech toys and equipment for free. Need help navigating today’s new technology? Broward County Library has classes in everything from basic computing to coding to artificial intelligence, and they’re available seven days a week, at all levels and at libraries all over the county. This fall, see yourself at a Broward County Library and see how Broward County Library adds value not just to our services, but to your life.

Sincerely, KELVIN

Miki

My Library Story:

and

Claudine Racine Hardworking and ambitious, Miki and Racine want to operate their own businesses as a legacy for their children. Miki plans to open a multi-service financial consulting firm and Claudine plans to expand her current photography business, CR Photos & Booth.

For husband and wife Miki and Claudine Racine, coming to Main Library to take their 2019 Broward College graduation photos seemed only natural. “We depended so much on the library as kids and adult students…for us, it was coming full circle.” With this amazing couple, it’s the winner’s circle! As Claudine explained, “We really relied on Main Library because at that time neither of our parents could afford computers.” As Miki tells it, “I would have never made it through middle school and my science projects without you.” Claudine and Miki give the library a lot of credit in their success as adult college students and entrepreneurs. The Racines spent a lot time on Main Library’s fifth floor managing to carry full time course loads for Bachelor of Arts degrees in business management while working full time jobs and parenting two babies in diapers. Like their parents, they aspire to be role models for their children, Victory, age two, and her 1-year-old brother, Prince Daniel.

Miki and Claudine Racine

We used the library for free Wi-Fi, study rooms for job interviews and books for school.

“We used the library for free Wi-Fi, study rooms for job interviews and books for school,” says Claudine, noting that in addition to Main Library, they were also active users of North Regional/Broward College Library and South Regional/ Broward College Library. This remarkable duo managed to complete their business degrees like a relay race, taking turns babysitting while the other went to the library. Their next library stop? Investigating what Main Library’s Creation Station Business Coworking Hub, a free-to-use small business incubator, can offer to propel their financial dreams. Come on in… We’ll be waiting!

Miki and Claudine are first-generation Americans whose parents came from Haiti in the 1980s. They honored their parents’ struggle to give them better lives by wearing Haitian flag stoles over their graduation gowns and by adopting their work ethic.

Friends of the Library Week October 20-26 Broward County Friends of the Library will be celebrating the 14th annual National Friends of the Library Week, October 20-26.
