EDITOR’S LETTER
To My Brutha,
Guess what I’ve been up to these last few weeks? Cooling out on a small, easy-going Bahamian Island, surrounded by beautiful beaches, friendly people, great food and fun. Sometimes it feels so surreal to actually be living and able to enjoy the little things in life. Most people, including myself, get so worked up over the pressures of trying to “make a life”, often forget the one we already have that we should be living. It becomes frustrating, really. Does this happen to you? Buddha once stated, “You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection.” Did you get that? I think you should read it over again. It is important in our daily lives to just take a moment for ourselves. If that means snoozing the alarm for another 10-15 minutes one morning, eating a little more calories today or spending tomorrow meditating on a cozy beach - then so be it. Everyday it is a struggle to become a better you. If you are not capable of taking care of yourself, protecting yourself, loving yourself, then how could you provide the same to another person? In this issue, you will find profiles on some amazing Brutha’s, just like you who are learning what it means to truly live. We touched on some issues that really can be frustrating and difficult to talk about, like dealing with a female boss or why your penis size matters. On the other hand, we’re providing dating tips on being a decisive man, dressing your best this fall, proper teeth and body care, and learning how to stretch yourself if you really want to thrive! All that will help you on your journey along the way. Plus, we didn’t forget the sex, the food, the gadgets or the car! Remember, Brutha Magazine is all for you. Don’t forget to spread the word to another Brutha. Love your Brutha,

J. WILLARD
The majority of my life is spent photographing fashion and lifestyle around the world. When I’m not doing that it seems as if I spend the remainder of my time seeking inspiration. En route to becoming a photographer, I picked up a literature degree and some other bad habits we can talk about another time (smile).
J. Willard also better known as Joe Willard Stubbs B.A, M.S, has built a remarkable career as an expert personal image consultant, fashion stylist and pageant coach who gently and intuitively helps women, men and children communicate who they are through what they wear.
I’ve had some great career highlights this year such as being afforded the opportunity to shoot for Brutha Magazine. I stick close to reading the latest fashion magazines a few times a week or find myself occasionally parked in front of my dusty television watching Jeopardy or “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit”. I’m currently working on a few major life projects, with the main one being ‘work smart, not hard’.
In 2012, J. Willard launched his own company, Name You Style by J. Willard, on the beliefs that a dynamic image could be created without having to renounce one’s personal style or comfort. J. Willard offers private consultations and remarkable makeovers for all clients.

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // AUTUMN ISSUE 2012
I’m sure that almost everyone would agree that men and women are different personality-wise, not only in societal interactions and relationships but even in the way we behave inside the workplace. From how we communicate and express feelings, to how we handle problems and give and take orders, there are bound to be some noticeable differences between the behaviors of each gender. Society tells us that men are the more composed gender. They are the ones that should be logical, assertive, rational in their thinking, less emotive, goal-oriented and strong whereas the women’s behavior boil down to emotions, wherein they are more cooperative, submissive, passive, sensitive, and dependent. These stereotypes are broken every day but for some, many of these traits hold true. Because so much of these assertions are, in fact, accurate, it should come as no surprise that the larger workforce within the Bahamas prefer males over females as bosses. Many working Bahamian men have stated that they prefer a male boss over a female one. They argued, once questioned about their choice, that there is a certain level of comfort that is greatly preferred when it comes to working for a male boss; and that is because, based on their experiences with female bosses, women can be too emotional whereas men are easier to relate to. They pointed out that some females tend to take situations personally rather than professionally. With female bosses, there is an increased chance of emotional out-lashing. Some men, however, just feel more comfortable taking orders from a male superior. Despite such stances, there are some positive experiences to note as well from males that have had female superiors. They stated that females are easier to communicate with, are more easy-going, more approachable and tend to have better relationships with their employees. Here, however, it boils down to the fact that some men found it easier to have a working relationship with a female boss, yet still thought that male bosses were better at addressing problems at work and doing so head-on. These results still play into the gender stereotypes that we have placed on males and females in our society, for they showcase
that women are better listeners and are more understanding ,which suggests why men found it easier to talk to a female boss when there was a problem at work. Men are supposed to be more assertive and logical which suggests why men thought male bosses were better at addressing problems at work.
”
When asked to list positive traits of their boss, many of the men stated that their boss is: understanding, personable, loyal, easy to talk to, firm, motivational, a problem solver, logical, strong, assertive, and goal oriented. When asked to list some negative traits of their boss, they stated that their boss is: emotional, pushy, impatient, talks too much, passive, blinded by hearsay and gossip, sly, weak, indecisive and one that picks favorites instead of the best person for the job. Based on my experience with a female boss, she was a caring, knowledgeable and goal oriented woman that had characteristics of a good leader. However, being a female, the intricacies that followed took away some of her effectiveness as a good boss. It always seemed to be a fashion show with her and the other female workers. It was like there was a competition between them as to who could look the best. Hair and nails were always a focal point and it seemed as if they were trying to out-do each other instead of completing their assignments as required. When there was a problem with other female staff, she would talk around the problem and talk about the staff behind their back, never really wanting to address the issue. She never seemed to want to step on anyone’s toes. For many of us, an ideal boss would be one that is loyal, one that is able to be assertive, strong yet compassionate, and an overall good listener. We want a boss that is knowledgeable and goal oriented. We want a boss that is a good communicator, fair and competent. We don’t want an emotional, takes- things-too-personally, weak, and indecisive boss. Ideally, good bosses are those that have traits of both a male and female. A typical male isn’t understanding, a good listener and compassionate; moreover a typical female isn’t assertive, aggressive, firm and less emotive and more logical in her thinking. Having a female boss, therefore, isn’t and shouldn’t be a problem; I think not having a competent boss that possess the necessary leadership qualities, however, is.

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // AUTUMN ISSUE 2012
The kitchen is the hub of the home. They say all parties end up there eventually, and when you have a family the kitchen soon becomes the most important room in the house whether hosting meals, having a family conversation and/or helping the kids’ with homework. So while you may want to revitalize your kitchen with a new look, it can be a daunting task to mess around with so many shared memories.

BRUTHA_HOW YOU LIVING
The key to any successful refurbishment is planning, but this is even more important in the kitchen, where you often have to work around features such as plumbing and gas pipes. Moving these around is a big job which requires expert assistance, so this should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. Simply ripping out and moving around everything as you go along is the quickest way to a disaster! Moreover, you can get inspiration from what others have done with their space, yet it can be difficult to establish how much space you have available and how you can utilize it more effectively. Thankfully, many manufacturers are beginning to recognize this. Kitchens by Wren (UK) or IKEA, for example, can be modeled using an interactive 3D planning tool. It allows you to space out the various units as they would fit in your home, and you can come back to it as many times as you like, trying new things until you’re completely satisfied. Visualizing the final kitchen in this way can give you more confidence in choosing the right look.
14
planning the perfect kitchen BRUTHA MAGAZINE // AUTUMN ISSUE 2012
When planning, just remember that the kitchen still needs to fulfill its various functions. Sleek cupboard units and a sizeable breakfast bar may be attractive options, but they should not come at the expense of an inconveniently placed sink or a lack of work surface space. Whatever theme you choose to take on, be it a homely country-style kitchen, a retro diner or a clean and minimal ultra-modern look, it needs to be able to work with your space requirements. The same goes for appliances - you may have your heart set on a retro tall cabinet fridge, but it might not be suitable if you’re working with a limited-size area. Themes also need to be consistent - mixing style can make a place appear clumsy and cluttered, and dramatically reduce the impact of your look. So prepare well and make the most of the planning tools available, and you’ll have the perfect kitchen in no time.

BRUTHA_SHE SAYS As young girls, we have silly notions of what In a world where many believe “bigger is better” in relation to all sorts of things, it’s no surprise that the penis finds itself positioned within that same context. Often, men and women alike think size is synonymous with sexual function and performance. We’ve all heard someone brag about how well endowed they are, as to imply that a big penis is the foremost quality of being a good sexual partner. On the other hand many not-so-well endowed men create complexes for themselves that sometimes affect their self-esteem and their relationships. And while it is the case that some women prefer an above average package, the truth of the matter is size is not a guarantor of sexual pleasure.
Is Bigger Always Better? Simply put, No. As previously stated, just because you have a large penis, doesn’t mean you know how to use it properly. There is some truth to the adage “It’s not the size of the ship but the motion in the ocean.” If a man does not know how to please a woman, his having a “big one” is of no consequence. But, being in tune with a woman’s body is the key to pleasing her.
SHE SAYS
Whether you are having rough freaky sex or passionate lovemaking – handle her with care. Don’t just ram “it” in the vagina like you’re trying to stuff a pipe into a keyhole. Yes the vagina is capable of expanding, but make sure it is fully lubricated (preferably with her own fluids) and ready to go. Don’t be so overly ambitious about getting the goods that you rush in. This can ruin the experience for both of you. Also, women find that a big penis can sometimes be more of a curse than a gift. If it’s too big it can be uncomfortable or even painful (not in a good way), especially when going extremely deep and hard. Usually when engaging with a partner who is packin,’ women prefer slower and gentler thrusts that in turn work their way up to more faster and deeper pushes. Don’t get me wrong; a woman can really enjoy a large penis. The positive thing about well-endowed men is the ‘full’ feeling we get when he is inside the vagina. The other good thing is the ability for him to take longer strokes, especially during sexual positions where he is on the side or behind the woman i.e. doggystyle, the plough, sensual spoon etc. The bottom line is, don’t rely on just your size to get the job done.
DOES YOUR PENIS SIZE REALLY MATTER? By Harriet Hampton
16
BRUTHA MAGAZINE // AUTUMN ISSUE 2012
What if you’re Lackin’ and not Packin’? So, for the brothers who come up a little short, don’t get discouraged. A smaller penis doesn’t necessarily mean a bad sexual experience. Keep in mind that for many women, pleasure starts before the pants come of. Sound, touch, smell and taste are all things that create arousal. Once you have aroused the woman find ways to please her. Full body sensual rubs, clitoris stimulation (touch, sucking and licking), and breast play are all very important. Some men who have smaller penises make the mistake of trying to overcompensate as if they have something to prove. This creates a lack of focus on the woman’s needs, which can be a disaster, and you will end up doing her and yourself a disservice. Focus on proper positioning and stroke skills. Positions that are better for smaller penises are missionary, the padlock, the butterfly, the clip and others. These positions allow you to control your placing and stimulate the clitoris at the same time, which in turn is essential for optimal pleasure.
Things you should know regardless of your size. Whether you are as small as a silkworm or hung like a horse, here are some things to keep in mind:
1. Bringing a woman to orgasm
is about more than just penis size. Make love to her whole body. Arouse her through mental and psychical stimulation. Focus on stroke skills and positions that directly engage her vaginal walls. Keep in mind the G-spot is only 2-3inches inside the vagina and can be reached with almost any size penis if positioned properly.
3. Don’t forget the clit! It’s the only
organ on the human body that has the sole function and purpose of receiving pleasure. The clitoris has 8,000 nerve endings and over 70-80 percent of women achieve orgasm through direct clitoral stimulation. So rubbing, licking, and sucking it the right way is half the battle!
So, why does your penis size matter? It doesn’t! No matter how you measure up, work with what you have, and have fun doing it!
2. Ask her what she likes. While
there are some universal things that tie us together, not all women are the same. Some women prefer sex one way and some prefer it another. Never assume that what worked in the past with someone else will work in your current experience. We all have our own personal preferences and desires. Some like it hard and rough while some like it soft and slow. And then there are us women who like it all. So be attentive to her personal needs.

BRUTHA_HE SAYS
Sorrow is what I feel for the man who has had the privilege of placing his penis inside of the woman he perceives to be the girl of his dreams, and there is nothing there for him to touch, run, stroke except the small amounts of air escaping. Have I been there? When I was 13. But let’s not be that minister that preaches to the choir here. We know how important it is for the dick to press against the g-spot effortlessly sometimes. We know how important it is for a woman to be able to grab the phone once you leave to let her friends know she won’t be attending “girls night out” because she can’t walk. This has been drilled into our heads by those friends we made in elementary school who swore they lost their virginity at age 8. Those lies accompany their “my dick is big” lie. We’re adults now, and no one is bragging on losing their virginity at this age. But my dick is big.
HE SAYS
WHEN YOUR PENIS SIZE MATTERS.

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // AUTUMN ISSUE 2012
I’ve spent my life networking, shaking hands, making toasts, and dancing with beautiful women who’ve come from all over the world to my table just to hear me speak. I’ve entered into contracts with powerful men because they recognized an equal or greater amount of power within me. These things came easy to me. Just as easy as going into the store on a Sunday afternoon in mesh basketball shorts with no supportive underwear. The confidence pours from me like the smell of grocery store cologne.
By Darnell Lamont Walker
The bigger the dick, the higher the confidence in the owner. The higher the confidence in the owner, the more risks he is willing to take, hands he’s willing to shake, women (or men), he’s willing to ask out for a round of drinks at the local eatery where he’ll stare into their eyes and make them guess everything that’s on his mind. In a recent conversation with a med student about a patient who essentially lost his penis to his pride, I was asked if I could live without my penis. Laughs were shared after the damning words I chose to share in response to such an idiotic question. I am in love with my big ego. I enjoy being that guy at a brunch with 30 others who can walk between tables and flirt with all the women at each table because my confidence allows me to do that. They notice the heart I wear on my face after they notice the bulge I wear around my zipper. So while the small penis may be able to reach the g-spot and play its role in the production of sometimesbeautiful children, it will not lend hand to many achievements of its master. Like with the blind man who can hear a hummingbird flap its wings 20 yards away, another ability within the small penis man will become stronger if he’s lucky. So I raise my glass in a toast: to those who can stand in a busy intersection in a Speedo and smile.

BRUTHA_CREATING THE BALANCE
do you desire a three way? by David Wygant
By David Wygant www.davidwygant.com
Before you read this make sure you let her pick her out. What am I talking about and why is it so important to have her pick the one she wants? You’ve been dreaming of this night for most of your adult life. It seems like it’s every man’s ultimate sexual fantasy: meeting a woman cool enough to want to invite a friend over for a threeway. You’ve heard rumors about the three-way. You’ve had friends who have experienced it, and they all tell you it’s like living out your own private porn film. What people fail to talk about when it comes to a three-way, however, is the emotional repercussions that occur the day after a three-way. Welcome to a really tough time in your adult adolescence. In order to make a three-way successful and make it work, you need to realize that this “ultimate male fantasy” has to be only about her. Let’s say your girlfriend comes to you and says, “I really
20
BRUTHA MAGAZINE // AUTUMN ISSUE 2012
want to do this because I think it will really turn me on to see you and I with my best friend.” In that situation, you need to ask her some questions and talk to her more about it before you even consider doing it. You need to talk to her ahead of time about what the parameters will be, because if you overstep certain boundaries she has you might ruin the relationship (not only with her but also between her and her friend). A three-way always sounds good ‘on paper.’ Three-ways in fantasy land are always amazing. However, three-ways in the real world are very emotionally confusing, especially if you get so turned on that you can’t keep your hands off the friend (and end up ignoring your girlfriend). That does happen! It happens because as men, we are wired to always want the new. Take a man to a car dealership for two hours, and watch him test-drive four different cars for two straight hours. The man will leave with a car. Why? Because we always want bigger, better and more fun.
Put a hot woman that your girlfriend brings over in front of you, and no matter what the boundaries are — whether it’s no penetration or not — you are going to spend more time on the friend (because she is the “new one”). You’ve already had the old one plenty of times. That toy is getting old for you now. A three-way is a male fantasy, but be sure to realize that it has to be all about her and be done according to her rules and parameters. So whatever your girlfriend says, you need to respect. It’s fun to have a wild and crazy woman in bed. It’s a lot of fun to be with a woman who likes a lot of sexual exploration. You don’t want to ruin that just because you think the three-way is supposed to be a certain way. Allow it to be however it’s going to be, and remember one thing which is the most important advice I can give you: Make it about her and her pleasure, and it’s amazing how far you can stretch those boundaries.

BRUTHA_WORK IT
Be a decisive man! By David Wygant
In life, a man is a man, and a woman is a woman. If you’ve ever stood by a stand- it could be a vegetable stand, fruit stand, or brownie stand, it could be in a hospital cafeteria, it could be at Whole Foods - there’s always an opportunity there to see a woman become indecisive. Women are very indecisive in certain ways. Think about when you’re going out with a woman, and you ask them, “Hey, what do you want for dinner?” They usually say, “What do you want?” They want you to make the decision. We’re wired like we used to be, as cave men and cave women. We haven’t changed in our internal programming. A woman wants a man to lead all the time. When a man leads, a woman is turned on. When a man is decisive, the indecisive woman is turned on. She wants you to be the leader. 22
BRUTHA MAGAZINE // AUTUMN ISSUE 2012
So a great exercise is to go to a market, and just watch. Just stand by a stand of brownies, or cake, or pastries, and watch women look around. Watch their eyes go from one brownie to the pastry to the muffin. They can’t make a decision. So, in that situation, you need to walk over to them and say this: “I know. It’s a tough choice, isn’t it? It’s really hard, but what are you in the mood for? Do you want the chocolate? Do you want the coconut? Or is it the apple pie?” Engage her a little bit. And then she’ll look at you and say: “I don’t really know what I want…” And that’s when you need to help her out. Help her figure out what she wants because here’s the deal: On a very deep, subconscious level, she’s looking at you - without even realizing it - as a leader.
So much of life is very subconscious. You’ve helped her through this painful process of picking out a pastry to go with her lunch. And as simple a process as that was for you, she’s in awe - she’s looking at you as a real man. In her eyes, you’re a man that takes control, a real leader, and this is what she wants in a mate. Quick decision-making: it’s something that you’ve got to learn to do. There are many characteristics of the attractive leader of men—this is just one of them. Identify the attributes of the man that you want to be and slowly incorporate them into your personality and life. Indecisive women everywhere are waiting.

bacteria, which when washed in the acidic bathhouse of saliva, can quickly cause cavities. • Plaque resides around the gum line. This is a problem area for many, due to focusing on getting the job done, instead of doing the job well. • Don’t neglect the tongue! It is important to brush all the way to the gag reflex. The muscle harbors approximately 75% of the bacteria responsible for odor-causing germs. Imagine trying to view your surroundings through a pair of dirty glasses. You would strain your eyes, right? According to the
professionals, longterm buildup of food particles on your tongue decay, muting your taste buds. So if you love that sultry taste of the decadent crème brûlée, do yourself a favor as not to deprive your taste buds of its flavor.
Five Top dental products recommended by dentists, hygienists and other related professionals. • Toothpaste: Colgate Total • Sensitive Toothpaste: Colgate Total • Fluoride Mouthwash: ACT Total Care
Flossing is a Fundamental Many people do not realize that as uncomfortable and tedious as it may be, flossing on either side of the papillae as far as the floss can reach without causing undue discomfort, frees the mouth of many hidden culprits lying beneath the gum line that cause decay and odor. During a recent visit to my hometown dentist for a routine cleaning, my hygienist encountered a difficult area to clean even with her professional tools. Much to my surprise, she mentioned that the front of the mouth is a common area for tartar buildup. The solution: more rigorous flossing. Left untreated, this can lead to more serious problems.
• Floss: Crest Glide • Interdental Cleaner: G-U-M Proxabrush
System of Suds I was ten years old, attending my fourth grade career fair, when my dentist of eight years was presenting to our class. A great piece of advice that I have always remembered from his presentation was to have a system for brushing your teeth. Dentists divide the mouth into quadrants-- top and bottom, left and right. By diving your mouth into four sections, you conquer a Herculean task by focusing on one area at a time. This method is especially helpful if you have teeth that are harder for which to care. Begin from the back, the most difficult area to reach, and work your way to the front. You want to begin with the back teeth, because if you are anything like most people, you tend to shirk on the suds if the back teeth are last.
Rinse Rubbish Toothpaste Troubles Rigorously If you have stepped into any grocery store within the past ten years, you have probably noticed that there is a barrage of toothpastes from which to choose. The type that you select will depend on the individual needs of your teeth. If your teeth are sensitive, you will want to purchase a brand specifically formulated with your teeth in mind. For teeth that are discolored or stained, you should steer towards a brightening toothpaste. If you are pinching your pennies over buying a particular brand, keep in mind that less is more. A pea-sized amount works wonders, thus saving you money at the register.
To complete any basic tooth care regimen, a thirty second rinse with a non-alcoholic mouthwash is the best prescription. Sure, we all love the sensation that we get from an alcohol-containing rinse, but while that residual tingling feels refreshing, it can actually be harming your oral tissues. Studies show that prolonged use of astringent rinses can cause oral sores and cancers. Remember, your healthcare professionals are there to help, and you should consult them when you encounter any abnormalities concerning your dental health. 11 Tips and Tricks to boost your metabolism.
50
1// Do not go over the top with calorie cutting.
2// Eat a hearty breakfast.
3// Pile on the protein.
Putting yourself on a very-low-calorie diet is a definite way not to lose weight. Your body is programmed to defend your usual weight. So if you suddenly drop 1,000 calories from your diet, your resting metabolic rate which is the number of calories your body burns to maintain basic bodily functions, such as breathing and heartbeat will automatically slow down, because your body now assumes that you’re starving.
Believe it or not, it may be the most important meal of the day as far as metabolism and weight loss is concerned. Breakfast eaters lose more weight than breakfast skippers do, according to studies. Your metabolism slows while you sleep, and it doesn’t rev back up until you eat again. That’s why it’s smart to start the day with a solid 300- to 400-calorie meal; it jump-starts your metabolism.
Research shows that getting plenty of protein can boost your metabolism, causing you to burn an extra 150 to 200 calories a day. Protein is made up mainly of amino acids, which are harder for your body to break down than fat and carbs so you burn more calories getting rid of them.
So how many calories should you consume? Depending on your level of activity, you can safely lose anywhere from half a pound to two pounds a week if you multiply your current weight by 11, says Applegate. (For example, if you’re 120 pounds, aim for around 1,320 calories a day.) Unless you’re less than five feet tall, don’t let your daily calories dip below 1,200. Research shows that people who consume less than this amount see their resting metabolic rate plummet by as much as 45 percent.
Aim for a breakfast that has plenty of high-fiber carbs. High-fiber carbohydrates take longer for your body to digest and absorb than fats therefore they don’t cause rapid changes in your blood sugar, so your hunger is kept at bay longer. Some good choices: a bran-rich breakfast cereal with low-fat milk; whole-grain toast topped with low-fat ricotta and sliced banana or berries; an eggwhite veggie omelette with wholegrain toast.
BRUTHA MAGAZINE // AUTUMN ISSUE 2012
That doesn’t mean you have to live on high-protein but you should make sure that 10 to 35 percent of your total daily calories comes from protein. So if you’re on an 1,800-calorie diet, 360 to 630 of those calories should come from lean sources of protein, such as fish, chicken, low-fat cheese, yogurt and legumes. Aim to have a serving of protein, such as nuts, a small can of tuna, or a piece of low-fat string cheese, at every meal and snack.
5// Go for “good” carbs.
Refined carbs, such as bagels, white bread, and potatoes, create a surge in insulin that in turn promotes storage of fat and may drive down your metabolic rate. It’s important to keep carbohydrates in your overall diet, but focus on vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, which have less of an impact on insulin levels.
6// Skip alcohol.
Having a drink before a meal causes people to eat around 200 calories more. Other research has found that the body burns off alcohol first, meaning that the calories in the rest of the meal are more likely to be stored as fat. If you do have a cocktail craving, stick to wine, which packs only 80 calories a glass.
4// Nibble all day.
7// Drink milk.
Load up on low-fat dairy: people who consumed milk, yogurt, and cheese three to four times a day lost 70 percent more body fat than people who didn’t eat dairy in a study published in the January 2003 American Society for Nutritional Sciences Journal of Nutrition. Eating five to six mini meals rather than three larger meals every day keeps your metabolism humming 24/7. It will also prevent you from going without food so long that you become so hungry you overeat. Try not to let more than four hours elapse between meals and make sure each meal includes protein, for an extra metabolic boost. If you eat a high-fiber breakfast of cereal and fruit first thing, for example, have a midmorning snack, such as yogurt and fruit; lunch try four ounces of chicken or fish on top of a leafy green salad another snack, like a banana and a piece of low-fat cheese, in the late afternoon; and a light dinner four to six ounces of turkey, salmon, or another lean source of protein with steamed veggies.
8// Pump iron.
Weight training is the best way to crank up your resting metabolic rate. As you get older, your resting metabolic rate drops, but weight training can rev it right back up again. A pound of muscle burns up to nine times the calories a pound of fat does.
10// Get some shut-eye.
Skimping on sleep can derail your metabolism. In a study at the University of Chicago, people who got four hours of sleep or less a night had more difficulty processing carbohydrates. Schedule your workouts earlier in the day; exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can keep sleep at bay. And try soaking in a hot bath, since studies show that warm water makes it easier to fall asleep.
11// Chill out.
Long-term stress can make you fat, studies have found. When you’re chronically stressed, your body is flooded with stress hormones, which stimulate fat cells deep in the abdomen to increase in size and encourage fat storage. I call this toxic weight, because fat deep within your belly is more likely to increase your risk for heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. And stress hormones spark your appetite, making you likely to overeat.

BRUTHA_ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
Rumah has It ! !
I really don’t like it when people spread rumors. They always seem to be as far away from the truth as possible and most likely it disappoints in the end. Luckily, that does not stick to The Bahamas’ newest R&B sensation, Rumah Roberts. With a background of singing in the church like most upcoming artists today, Rumah seeks to use his music to reveal love to the ladies, as he puts it. Following his two-time success at the National Arts Festival of The Bahamas in 2008 and 2009, Rumah has joined forces with Paragonic Entertainment, securing a good name for himself. To date he sings to the healthy tune of over 25,000 Twitter followers, over 13,000 Facebook fans and over 10,000 YouTube subscribers with 17 million worldwide channel views. Still banking on the innocent boy ticket, this young Brutha is ready to take on the world. He has shared the stage and spotlight with a number of other notable artists such as Shadow Masta and El Padrino. But the real questions are: who really is Rumah? Where did he come from? And where is he headed? 52
BRUTHA MAGAZINE // AUTUMN ISSUE 2012
I got the chance to sit down with this talented Brutha. Here is what we gathered: BRUTHA: Who is Rumah? Rumah is an open, confident, vulnerable, selfless/charitable, and honest individual with a crazy sense of humor: a true gentleman that possesses a sexy innocence.
BRUTHA: How did you get into music? I realized that I loved music from the age of 3 years old because every time my father would play his music my twin brother and I would get excited, dance and jump around in the bed. Moreover, I’ve been singing from the age of 5, only to realize at age 8 that I can really sing. Ever since that point, I’ve been working on enhancing my gift.
BRUTHA: When was your first performance? I remember my first ever performance was in primary school where I sang “All My Life” by KC and JoJo. However, my first official performance I would say was at a concert called “Far From Local” in Grand Bahama where I sang “Hold You Down” with Shadow Masta.
BRUTHA: How did it make you feel? For my performance in primary school, I was very nervous, but I settled the nerves after I started getting into the song. For my “Far From Local” performance I was an adult and was comfortable with my artistry. In addition to that, the crowd was filled with ladies, and the song was for the ladies. Therefore, that made it easier to work the crowd.
BRUTHA: How does your music differ from other artists? Although I venture and mix different genres of music together, I feel that the tone of my voice and style defines and separates me from other artists. My sound derives from who I am, and no one else can be Rumah as I cannot be anyone else.
BRUTHA: Any one you really want to collaborate with? Why? RUMAH: Locally, I’ve done some work with Chris “Sketch” Carey who has been one of my biggest inspirations. Also, Julien Thompson and Angelique Sabrina are some artists I would love to work with; I feel we can make a real banging record! But on an international level, I would love to work with Usher because I feel he would stretch me creatively, bringing out the best in me.
BRUTHA: Did you have any problems coming up in the music industry? RUMAH: Coming up is always hard especially when you are building from the ground up. This is a dog eat dog industry filled with rejections because maybe your name is unknown at the time, but I proved myself and stuck with my gift. And after showcasing your talent and garnering fans, the task of getting work done is a bit easier, but the creative bar is raised and it gets harder.
BRUTHA: Do you have any recent releases or upcoming albums? RUMAH: The last release that I’ve had was a record featuring El Padrino entitled

“242 Girls”. I wanted to do a record for our ladies in the 242. Additionally, most of what I put out now is for promotional purposes; however, I have an upcoming album in the works called “Spread the RUMAH”. We will have a new image and sound that is more true to me.
BRUTHA: What are your plans for the future? RUMAH: Honestly, I plan to go international with my music. I feel that I can do it with the right support system, the right marketing, and once I remain humbled and continue to improve my gifts. I plan to be a musical icon to the world, and I plan to be the voice or face of The Bahamas as Rihanna is for Barbados.
BRUTHA: Anything you wish to share with up and coming musicians/artists out there? RUMAH: My advice is to be persistent in perfecting what it is you are destined to do. There would be a lot of sacrifices you will have to make to make this a reality. I also believe, “Your gift will make room for you and bring you before GREAT men”. I believe in that, and I would like to be a living demonstration of that truth for others to believe. So, what is the “it” that Rumah has? I would say drive, determination, faith, tenacity and a voice that comes in close to R&B heartthrob, Tank. But most of all, Rumah has talent. And this will surely take him lengths of the By from A.C.the Burrows Bahamas to the great heights of the World.

3 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves 2 teaspoons curry powder 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon pepper Ÿ teaspoon chili powder 1 medium red onion, chopped 5 cloves garlic, minced jalapeno peppers, seeded and finely chopped (by seeding the jalapeno you lose most of the spice/heat but retain great flavor) 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 14-ounce can light coconut milk 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 tablespoon dried basil 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger 3 cups hot cooked rice
DIRECTIONS: Cut chicken into 1-inch pieces. Place in medium bowl. Stir together curry, 1/2 teaspoon salt, pepper and chili powder. Sprinkle over chicken, tossing to coat evenly. Cover and chill for 1 to 2 hours. In a large nonstick frying pan, stir onion, basil, garlic and peppers in hot oil over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes, until onion is translucent. Romaine Salad with Chicken, Cheddar, Apples, Spiced Pecans and Cranberry Vinaigrette INGREDIENTS:
Salad: 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 3-4 medium) Salt and black pepper 1 tablespoon vegetable or canola oil 1/2 cup water 1 large head romaine lettuce, torn into bite-size pieces (about 8-10 cups) 8 ounces sharp or extra-sharp cheddar cheese, cut into 1/2-inch cubes 1 Granny Smith apple, cored and chopped or sliced thin 1/2 red onion, sliced thin 1/4 cup dried cranberries 1 cup spiced pecans, store-bought or following the simple recipe below Dried Cranberry Vinaigrette: 1/4 cup cranberry juice or water 1/4 cup dried cranberries 1/4 cup red wine or raspberry vinegar 1 shallot, peeled and quartered 1 small garlic clove, peeled 2 teaspoons fresh thyme (or 1/2 teaspoon dried) 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil Quick Spiced Pecans: 2 tablespoons butter 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice 2 cups pecan halves 1 tablespoon sugar
DIRECTIONS: For the chicken and salad, pat the chicken dry with paper towels and season both sides with the salt and pepper. Heat the oil in a large 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium heat until the oil is shimmering and hot. Add the chicken and cook until it is nicely browned on one side, about 3 minutes. Flip the chicken over, add the water, and cover the skillet. Cook the chicken, letting it poach, until it is cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a cutting board and let it cool slightly before carving. Toss the lettuce, cheese, apple, pecans, onion and dried cranberries together. Divide the salad among the serving plates. Slice the chicken on a diagonal and arrange over the salad. Serve with the vinaigrette. I prefer to let everyone douse their own salad with dressing, but you could toss the salad with 1/2 cup or so of the vinaigrette before assembling it on the plates and serve the extra dressing on the side. For the pecans, melt the butter in a 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium-low heat. Stir in the spices and then the pecans. Toast the nuts, stirring often, until the color deepens slightly and they are lightly toasted, about 5-7 minutes. Transfer the nuts to a bowl and toss with the sugar. Let them cool completely before tossing with the salad. For the dressing, combine the cranberry juice (or water) and cranberries in a small microwave-safe bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and microwave on high for one minute until hot. Process the hot cranberry mixture, vinegar, shallot, garlic, thyme, mustard, salt and pepper in a blender until the shallot and garlic are finely chopped. With the blender running, add the oil and continue to blend until the dressing is smooth and well-combined. Thin the dressing, if needed, with additional cranberry juice. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Who is Matt Sweeting? By Taj Duncombe
The Bahamas is a country that depends on it’s tourism industry to get through, but there are young men who are now on the scene that may be putting that industry to the test by becoming the next Donald Trump. Matt Sweeting is an up and coming entrepreneur that is probably the most business minded young man that you will ever meet. While most businessmen and women pride themselves on the level of success they’ve achieved over a period of time, which translates into the amount of money they’ve made via their businesses; Matt prides himself on looking his best
always, especially when handling business. He believes that the way you dress and carry yourself ultimately determines how well you perform not only with potential business partners but clients as well. This young Brutha is determined to make a name for himself as he steadily aims to build a conglomerate, which fill many voids within The Bahamas. It is in his blood though, from a young age – as he will tell you – Matt began finding opportunities to create business ventures, that put him ahead of the curve, below is a profile of a man that you will definitely hear from again.

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // AUTUMN ISSUE 2012
Well inquiring minds want to know who is Matt Dorien Sweeting?
How does your son fit into your professional life?
I’m a pretty simple guy. I’m 27 years old and a professional. I think I grew up as a businessman at heart; I’ve always had a business mindset and I’m pursuing to become the best realtor in the country…I’m coming for the number 1 spot!
Well I always try to include my son in everything I do professionally. I take him to business meetings and tell him my goals and why I work so hard. My goal is to give him a huge jumpstart on life.
What were some of your childhood hobbies? I played basketball I guess like any other kid. I’ve always had an interest in technology and graphics. I did kid stuff but at 14 years old I started a company called Neighborhood Cleaners that went around cleaning the yards and windows of all the neighbors, so I did normal things but I did other things also.
What about a wife and kids? I have a five-year-old son, but no wife. I think I’m going to hold off on the marriage thing.
What are some of the pressures and/or stresses involved in being an entrepreneur? I think a lot of trouble comes from money and time management. I think direction and how to organize funds, acquire funding, budgeting, and deciding when to advertise and when to hold back or even how to advertise for that matter. I think just answering some of those are the initial stresses. Besides that, the red tape that you have to go through here in terms of starting a business is ridiculous. So some of those things are the headaches of entrepreneurship.

BRUTHA_FEATURE STORY
How many people are employed with your company? It’s just me and I have a sales associate, whose job is to go out and drive new business.
Above all, how does Matt differentiate himself from the competition? My slogan in real estate is ‘Your Agent for Life’ and I think that motto is all encompassing in the sense that it can’t be my real estate motto and not my life motto. When I put myself in a project, I put myself fully in it and I always have my clients’ best interest at heart. I think that alone separates me from the rest, I want to see people succeed and I want to succeed as a result of that.
Is The Bahamas a prime place to start a business? Or are we too far behind in terms of technology and support, etc? Absolutely a great place to start a business, I think the fact that we are a step or two behind in terms of technology creates voids that your business or mine can fill. I think if we created opportunities for our youth and even ourselves as aspiring businessmen to be a little bit more exposed to do some exploring in other countries to see where money is being made and bring those ideas here, we can develop into a prime place for Bahamians to start a business.
Let’s talk about your style, how do you go about dressing on a regular day at the office? I dress for the weather but I always want to be a step above the competition. And by
62
BRUTHA MAGAZINE // AUTUMN ISSUE 2012
that, I love looking good. My style is, if I were to coin a term, business-preppy. I’m usually in a collared long sleeve shirt, rolled up, with some slacks, nice dress shoes and sunglasses.
For a business meeting? Definitely a suit. Recently, all of my suits have been tailored. They say so much more than a store-bought suit. Moreover, I’ve produced some great ties already with my company, Silver Lining Apparel. So, a suit, a tie, and cuff links will do the job.
Would you consider yourself a conservative dresser or fashionisto? I think I’m a conservative dresser with a little bit of edge. A slight in-between.
Do you have any style icons? Yeah, I have some style icons. I admire Kanye’s style, I like Idris Alba’s, George Cooney, and Brad Pitt - style that is kind of preppy and always on point. Locally, it would be Charles Sealy and Wendell Jones.
Why should Brutha’s out there see you as a style icon? Besides the fact that I own an apparel company? (smiles) I would say from the responses I’ve gotten, and I hope that comes across as humble. I know what current style is, I pay some attention to it, and I think for that reason, the fact that I’m in touch with fashion makes me the least bit of a fashion icon.

BRUTHA_FEATURE STORY
What about personal favorite pieces/essentials? I’m a loafer guy. You have to have great shoes, great accessories and every man should have on a nice watch if nothing else.
Where do you shop? I would say all over. I’m not very brand conscious. Locally, I shop at Fini, Faconnable, & Mike’s Custom Tailoring for my suits. Also, I shop at Express, American Eagle, and H&M to name a few.
I know culture is changing globally and the corporate world is becoming less formal everyday, how do you feel about that? I think you should go to work feeling comfortable. I know especially with our climate, there is no way I was coming out of my house in a full suit on a 109 degree temperature day. You should dress to make your client feel comfortable, so if your client is in khakis and a polo shirt maybe you should follow suit.
What are your future plans? My future plans are to grow my businesses. Ultimately, I want to build a company big enough for my son to inherit. Create somewhat of an empire or legacy for my family to carry on. So a major task on my todo list in 2013 is to start my own agency. .
64
BRUTHA MAGAZINE // AUTUMN ISSUE 2012
Do you believe there are sufficient resources available for people to start their own business? Absolutely. We have a wealth of knowledge here in the Bahamas we can tap into. I am a committee member with the Organization of Young Professionals and this has proven to be a great resource for new businesses and young professionals.
Its hard making that first step, what advice would you give to other aspiring Brutha’s out there? I think what’s been big for me is strategic partners and consultation. By that, what I mean is I never chart a course without sitting with someone who has charted that course before. If I wanted to start a business in any industry, I would first seek out the best in that industry to address all the pertinent questions and gray areas to have a clear understanding on the way forward. s.

BRUTHA_MAN ON THE RISE
His name is Drew Palacious. This is his story. Well inquiring minds want to know who is Drew Palacious?
Drew Palacious is an outgoing, fun-loving, eager-to-get-to-know-people kind of guy. Also, I do have a side that is very shy, reserve and not as public.
Tell us about your family background.
Well I was born in Philadelphia where my mom is from, she’s an American and my dad is Bahamian from Inagua.
When did the urge to start modeling first hit?
It started when Ashley Baker had approached me, this is back when I was a waiter at Cappuccino’s Restaurant in Port Lucaya, and she asked me to be a model in an upcoming fashion show she was doing for the opening of a new retail store in the Bazaar. This was back in Summer 2010. She asked me to do it, we had a couple rehearsals and I enjoyed it. People thought I was a model already. That kind of introduced me to the culture in a sense and I had a great time at the show. And I’ve being doing it ever since.
What are some of the pressures and/or stresses involved in being a model?
For me honestly, I won’t say I have stresses being a guy. The only thing with me is…I have to eat. When you are on photo shoots sometimes its not always possible so that’s my stress for the most part.
68
BRUTHA MAGAZINE // AUTUMN ISSUE 2012
Is this all Drew or you have an agent, publicist - the works? No, I don’t…it’s just me
What about support from family and friends?
As far as family and friends, they’re all supportive and encouraging. Although some of my friends in the beginning teased me, some still do, but I know they still got my back.
Why do you think you survived in the marketplace?
There isn’t much of a market place. A lot of the emphasis is placed on girls and there isn’t much competition for males because enough [males] are not out there even though many may have what it takes. Also I survive because I personally feel I have what it takes and I put myself out there.
What are some remedies you use to keep your body and face?
People think I diet but I really don’t! I just try really hard to stay from what I know is bad for me but I can really eat a Baconator right now! (laughs) I do work out though, at least twice a day. I do cardio in the afternoon, functional fitness, similar to cross fit, weights, and boxing. I do weight lifting in the morning. I also have my step dad who I train with, Charles Lundy that keeps me focus.
Is The Bahamas a prime place to be a model? Or are we too far behind in terms of industry and support? Personally, I am not that knowledgeable to say but from what I see a lot of focus is placed on Nassau and not other islands. If we were to invest more into the industry we will be truly recognized as a fashion capital, we have the potential.
What are your future plans?
My future plans are to get a Master’s Degree in Finance. I’m currently working on returning to grad school and obtaining my CFA. As far as modeling, I will see where it takes me.
Are you currently involved romantically?
Currently no, I’m single. I’m too busy to be committed to anyone at this time. I like getting to know people though.
Do you believe relationships interfere with professional progress?
For me no, I do my best to separate the two although I do have a tendency to mess up a bit and mix the two.You should try your hardest not to because things really get complicated. You need to have someone who understands how important your professional life is, someone who is able to tolerate it and at the same time you should have a balance where you can devote time to her.
What about your fans? How do you deal with them?
I really didn’t think I had any fans until one time I was out Port Lucaya and a girl approached me and asked if I was Drew Palacious. I was like “Yeah, I’m Drew Palacious, how do you know my name?” She said she was a fan. It was funny she wanted to take a picture with me. Truthfully, I was a bit blown away to say the least.
Heart breaker or hopeless romantic?
I’m a hopeless romantic. Some people would beg to differ but it’s true. I don’t think I’m a heartbreaker.
Any hidden talents or passions? I have a passion for the water. I love spear fishing and jet skiing. It could be this…being a model.
Its hard making that first step, what advice would you give to other aspiring Brutha’s out there?
Truly be in it to win it! Don’t be afraid to step out and put yourself out there. Make sure whatever you do you can agree with. And most of all be true to yourself!

I guess by now, you all know that I’m an Apple fanatic. I mean, which self-respecting individual isn’t? But today, I’m about to show off something really cool for all the Android lovers out there. So, picture this, you’re at the gym with two of your homeboys, John and Freddie. Suddenly a call comes through to your phone from your Boss and you yell, “Call denied!” They both look at you like your crazy. Soon after, Facebook notifies you that the girl you’ve been courting for the last few weeks finally accepted your friend request and you go “yeah boy!” thinking out loud. “Why are you talking to your watch again?” asks Freddie. You just smile and say, “check it out, its my brand new Sony SmartWatch”. Yes! You’ve heard right. The new 2012 Sony SmartWatch, while appearing as an ordinary wristwatch at first glance, is anything but ordinary. The dust and splash proof, 1.3-inch OLED (65k color) micro display accessory has been designed to specifically communicate with most Androidbased (2.1 and higher) Smartphones via Bluetooth connection. The SmartWatch allows you to do many things including SMS, e-mail, phone caller ID that allows you to accept or deny calls, and check the weather. It comes preloaded with 15 apps, such as Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, a Music Player and Calendar

Notifications. The device is quite attractive and responsive to touch. By the tap of a button you can display the time or switch to another app. It also has an accelerometer and can vibrate as a form of alert. As far as battery life, depending on individual usage it can last up to 7 days. I’m sure if I were an Android owner I would purchase this cool accessory. For one, it beats the risk of damaging your phone which can stay put in your pocket or bag. And two, it makes you look like a boss (or at least a big time “Techie”) among the regular watch wearers. If you’re looking for a souped up luxury sports sedan to impress the rest, but one that is also practical for an everyday spin, then perhaps the 2013 Audi A7 would be the perfect suitor. The 2013 edition comes packaged with some of the most advanced features that are currently out on the market. From the leather interior, USB connections, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities to the on board navigation system infused with Google’s satellite imaging technology -- just to name a few-- this car literally puts innovation at your fingertips. With enough technology to titillate a techie, the Audi A7 is a definite upgrade from the previous year’s model. Notoriously known as the “five-door coupe,” this beautifully engineered work comfortably seats four passengers, operating under the guise of a whip that you take out to cruise around.Yet, due to the sleek design factor, it takes on another role, of becoming a practical vehicle, allowing for the storage of cargo. With removable rear deck panels in the hatchback storage space, the car takes advantage of the small enclosure transforming it into a more open storage area without taking on the label of a soccer mom ride. Equipped with a 3.0 liter V6 engine with enough torque for all the adrenaline junkies, and tires that range from 18-20 inches providing passengers with a smooth ride, this car is the very essence of a dichotomy, straddling the fence between chic living and raw edge. Other standard features of this year’s innovation include: allwheel drive, anti-lock brakes, heated driver seat, power locks, LATCH child restraint system, keyless entry and Xenon headlamps and many more. Of course, there is always the option for added features such as the LED headlights and a barrage of others that in reality only serve to elevate the price versus bringing added value to the table.

Cons to the sedan include not offering many luxury options for the asking price. If you are searching for splendor in the realm of sports cars, then the A7 is a great option to consider. However, if it is genuine grandeur that you seek, then comparable models such as the Lexus IS 350 or the MercedesBenz CLS 550 fit the profile by means of offering you more lavishly designed features. Though being backed by longstanding, more reputable names in the US car industry, they are more dependable in terms of transportation and durability. The reason being: Audi is manufactured by Volkswagen, and in most cases, the parts on either vehicle are interchangeable in terms of mechanics and vehicle repair, thus calling into question the overall quality of the car. The average-sized adult will fit comfortably in the rear seats, as long as they do not measure over six feet, then overhead becomes an issue. The A7 does however redeem itself in gas mileage in comparison to other car models such as the Mercedes CLS class. At an average of 18 mpg in the city and 28 mpg highway, versus the Mercedes CLS which averages a mere 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. The Audi coupe affords you a few more miles before you have to pay at the pump. For a mid-sized premium sedan with automatic transmission, all wheel drive and a host of safety features that even keeps the kids in mind, and an MSRP of $60, 100-soccer mom whip or not-- it’s not a bad bargain. And if you are willing to cope with a price tag of just over $60,000, you can literally sit in the lap of-- ahem-- semi luxury.

Stretch Yourself IF YOU WANT TO THRIVE “Anytime you think you’ve failed, you’ve only failed to see the compassionate lesson that you’ve brought to yourself. All you’ve really done is produced a result, actual failure is impossible.” -
Jackson Kiddard
Let’s be real, you like your comfort zone. So do I. But staying in there is death to dreams. The way out is to find people who have what you want, who have achieved the outcome you want and get their advice. And here’s the thing, because they see the road ahead, they are going to be able to see things you can’t yet. They are going to be able to guide you and show you a way of doing things that will scare the crap out of you. You know you are stepping out of your comfort zone when you are scared and nervous. I prefer to live in this space. It summons my survival instincts and pushes me to evolve and stretch. But here’s the thing, and I cannot emphasize this enough. The meaning we give the fear at the edge of our comfort zone will greatly determine the outcome and our future. When we stretch ourselves, when we are afraid and we give that fear the meaning “this is part of my dreams coming true” we have a much different response than “I should quit because I’m scared”. Oh hell no. We want to use fear as fuel for our dreams. We want to use fear as a compass showing us where to go. We want to use being uncomfortable as motivation for

moving forward and expressing and tapping into that Force within us that is designed to help us survive. I was watching a TED talk with JK Rowling and she talks about failure. She says that for her failure stripped away everything that was non-essential for her to live her dream and focus on writing Harry Potter. Talk about an empowering meaning! Imagine giving failure that meaning? It makes me want to get failing quickly. And then give it the meaning that everything that is nonessential to my dream is being peeled away. And this is a part of my dream coming true. This is the kind of courage we need - with the persistence to get through the dips and the setbacks. Because they will come. But your Spirit and The Uni-verse are stronger. You have to just give yourself an opportunity to prove that to yourself, which means you gotta go through it! So - how can you STRETCH today?
