BRUTHA_EDITOR’S LETTER

EDITOR’S LETTER

To My Brutha,

A very good friend of mine once ago lost everything of value to him. I’m talking friends, money, career - the whole nine. It was a lot to try and comfort someone who was so grounded – so comfortable and at ease and the next minute everything wiped from under their feet. I could always remember him saying that he felt cheated, confused and alone. Have you ever felt this way? We all go through similar moments in life. It comes down to how we react to these troubles and regain our composure that determines how successful we really are. I’ve always believed that each of our troubles is a stepping stone. You can get out of the deepest wells by simply believing in yourself. Maureen Brady reinforces this when she says, “whatever lies before you is not blocking your next step; it is your next step” . In this new issue, we’ve decided to approach a few lifestyles issues such as seeking happiness through money or possessions, objectifying women, presenting yourself, personal hygiene and the importance of chasing your dreams. I felt the need for you to know that Brutha Magazine is all for you, my Brutha, providing knowledge, culture and style like no other. You are never alone. Your single most important goal in life is to live your best life ever, on your own terms! So go out there be different, be independent, be an individual! Don’t forget to spread the word to another Brutha! Love, your Brutha,

JANELL NEVIUS

Two of my great passions in life are music and photography. It has made me better appreciate my own home and culture as well as that of the people I’ve met and the lands I’ve seen and I have become a much more tolerant person as a result. I really got more into photography about 3 years ago. I have assisted a few known photographers to get my grasp and hands on experience, and picked up on things as I go. Through my photography I seek to document my own personal experiences, to capture scenes and events as I see them and to share with others the beauty and diversity of the world I’ve seen. As the images of other photographers have inspired me to explore the world, I hope my own contributions will inspire others to do the same.

I was born and raised in a small town in Illinois were I learned the importance of photography. Growing up I never saw my dad without a camera around his neck. He always told my sisters and I to take as many photos as we could of everyone because you never know what tomorrow might bring. My love for photography grew rapidly as I got older. What started as just a hobby turned into a way to make some extra money during college but through it all I never lost my love of going out, my camera and me, just to relax. It has become more of a way of life for me and I love to spread my love for photography to others. It is a great way to relax and it is something I will probably do for the rest of my life.

BRUTHA_POWER & MONEY

A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUG CAN MONEY T BUY HAPPINE Throughout my twenty-four years, anytime I’ve expressed the wish to be rich and powerful, older people have countered with the saying, “Money can’t buy happiness.” After much thinking, I have decided that money can, in fact, buy you happiness. Happiness is an emotion. It is a feeling, and you can buy things that make you feel better. Better about your life, better about your job, better about your spouse, your children, your body anything! I believe that it was the great philosopher of my generation, Charlie Brown, who said:

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // SUMMER ISSUE 2012

“Happiness is anyone and anything that’s loved by you.” If you love expensive shoes or watches, and buying them makes you happy – even for one fleeting moment, you feel that the purchase was a success. Look at Christmas, the sheer joy on children’s faces when they open gifts (that you bought). Many people, once grown up, remember those December 25ths as the happiest times of their lives. Emotions are tricky little things; they can be a rollercoaster some days, and bland on others. They make us do extreme things and leave us as quickly as they come. Our

emotions tell us that we’re happy, or that we’re not happy. Our emotions tell us that eating a tub of popcorn is a good idea. We need to remember that emotions are guided by mood, temperament, hormones, and then to top it off, environment. So we have this force being tugged on the outside, and pulled on the inside. Then we go and buy the new Michele Tahitian watch and all of a sudden, we’re happy! Truly happy! Isn’t it amazing?! One purchase has changed your entire day! People watch shows like “Real Housewives of Atlanta” or “Beverly Hills” and point

to the fact that these women’s lives are filled with fabulous parties, expensive cars, expensive clothing, expensive food, but also filled with drama, tragedy, death, prison, and say, “They have loads of money, and they’re not happy.” Honey, Nene Leaks is happy. She is happy all the way to the bank. She gets paid a mint to show you how much money she is making, how much drama she has, and how many times she can insult Kim, and trust me, if she was not happy with her place on that television show, she would leave. What these women are not is fulfilled. This is where we get confused.

Happiness is not fulfillment, and money cannot buy fulfillment. If you are trying to buy goods and acquire money until it comes out of your nose to fill a void, then no, money cannot buy you fulfillment. What you need to do is try and figure out if you are buying things to fill a void (be it spiritual, or emotional) or just because they make you happy. If it’s the latter, keep on spending! If it’s the former, then you need to sit and work on yourself before you buy another thing.

nothing spiritually, or emotionally, that money can fulfill. Always remember, money is temporal, it can be touched, traded, and discarded of. Your soul is immortal.

So in the end, can money buy happiness? Yes. Can money fulfill you? No. There is

BRUTHA_HOW YOU LIVING

the new bachelor pad By Travis Sweeting

So, you’ve met the woman of your dreams and she’s finally coming over for dinner and a movie. Good food? Check. Fine wine? Check. Romantic movie? Check. What about the single most important thing that could possibly have her eating out of the palm of your hands? Your pad! Most women dread going over to some guy’s home, only to discover that the place is so lackluster. No warmth, no colour, no decent furnishings – and let’s not go into the level of cleanliness. The average guy assumes it’s a female’s job to decorate the home, but in essence your home is the one place where you are King. And if you’re a bachelor, your pad must speak volumes of who you are as a person. If you have filthy carpets, worn-out sofas and some dry looking paint on your walls, you could easily be mistaken for emotionally unavailable, unclean, and broke. Though, an upgrade to hardwood flooring, comfy couches and a contemporary color scheme can easily change that perception and make you appear as a man with a plan, Mr. Successful and Eligible, Sexy and Tasteful. Women marvel at things like that and the best part is, you can hire an interior designer to do it all for you! So, before she comes over for that hot date you have dreamed about for weeks, make sure your pad is up to standard. The thing is, the more comfortable she is in your home, the more comfortable she is with getting to know you better.

BRUTHA_SHE SAYS

SHE SAYS

WHAT’S REALLY SEXY ABOUT A MAN?

By Inderia Saunders

16

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // SUMMER ISSUE 2012

As young girls, we have silly notions of what makes a boy sexy. Our tastes trended towards the popular guy, the athlete or even the class-clown. A nice smile and cool faded jeans were all we needed. Thankfully (or sadly), we matured and realized that there’s more to this sexy business than mere adolescent benchmarks — that this was a rather complicated matter, in fact. Fellas, many women find it tough to define what’s really sexy about a man because - to borrow a trite cliché - “Sexy is in the eye of the beholder.” But it’s true, different women will find different things in a man sexy. As we grow up, some women swap nice smiles for

bulging biceps and cool jeans for fat wallets, with the list continuing and changing to fit the idiosyncrasies of different women. So while it’s good to keep in mind that sexy is too broad a term to paint with a narrow brush, it’s acknowledged that there are several common traits that can generally categorize a man as being sexy. They start with the obvious:

PHYSICAL ATTRACTION

A woman must first find something physically sexy on a man. Let’s face it. The reality is that initial attraction is very important in the beginning stages. It’s the thing that makes

us do the double take or walk across the room to strike up a conversation looking for more of what intrigued us. That physical asset can vary from broad shoulders to luscious lips to a sensuous personal scent for each woman. But make no bones about it, there has got to be something physically appealing on a man to spark a woman’s interest. It helps if he is keen on hygiene and style, but it doesn’t end there.

PERSONALITY

After the initial physical attraction, there needs to be something more to keep a woman thinking sexy thoughts about a man and that’s usually his personality. This factor will usually determine if his sexy can be more than one-dimensional. Physical attraction will get her attention, but a good personality is sure to keep it. A guy with a great personality that embodies all the key ingredients that a woman is attracted to will definitely be rated high. These key elements are inclusive of charm, wit, intelligence and sense of humor. Frankly, there may not be a woman alive who doesn’t consider any of those characteristics sexy.

STRENGTH

As time goes by, the search goes on for more of what’s sexy in man. One sure sexy factor that most women (and I repeat most women) are looking for is a strong man. No, it’s not the kind of weight-lifting strength that automatically comes to mind. It’s more the metaphoric broad-shoulders-I-can-lean-on, masculine anchoring to depend on and, at times, lead us that women are attracted to. The search for this alluring strength sometimes finds many women gravitating towards the “bad boy” in confusion of this quality’s manifestation. Yet, it’s undeniable that women find strong men very sexy. So sexy even that we may be misguided in our quest for it.

CONFIDENCE

Out of all the different conversations that women have about men, you hear about this one quality the most. Confidence is probably the one attribute that could trump the initial physical attraction. We’ve all heard the story at least once before: he just wasn’t her type, but there was “something” about him. Well, that “something” is usually confidence. It’s that “je ne sais quoi” that makes us like the guy, despite…whatever. Confidence in a man can see him land that super hot girl everyone else said was, “Out of his league.” Confidence is the belief in one’s self and abilities that sometimes can be reflected outwardly. It sends signals to a woman that a man is not needy and will not automatically be looking to her to fill gaps in her life. A cautionary note here: confidence is not to be mistaken with arrogance. Confidence is the ability to walk right up to that woman and start flirting with her, despite her surroundings. Arrogance is your belief that she should like you no matter how engaging you are. The two must never be confused. But nine times out of ten, the confident man will get a girl’s attention. The lists of what makes a man sexy goes on and on, but these are several key endowments that most women will concur as generally sexy in a man.

WHAT’S REALLY SEXY ABOUT A WOMAN?

By Darnell Lamont Walker Everything was at my disposal when I was 18. I would sit on “The World’s Most Famous Beach” with a lit clove in my mouth pretending to be all the writers I had ever read and admired, and laughing with the only girl I believe would set me free. The sun would shine as though tomorrow was nothing more than a rumor, and the women would walk by wearing nothing more than a shoestring around the body parts I was raised to believe were private. They were beautiful. A small town boy in a new city with a huge beach - this is what I’ve been looking at on shelves for years. This was sexy. As the shades beneath the thin cloths got darker, I fell deeper in lust. I was 18. This was sexy. Things change when you’re educated. Classrooms have little to do with it when you consider yourself a student of the world. In turn, I became exposed to women of the world, first introduced to me by Cecil Brown in his novel “The Life and Loves of Mr. Jiveass Nigger.” They were the women who sat in cafes sipping coffees and martinis and laughing lightly at my lies and real life follies.

18

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // SUMMER ISSUE 2012

Fully clothed women who’d raise their hands beside me in class to speak openly about their role in the pending revolution, wearing sweat pants that were rolled over around the waist and a white t-shirt, now raising their glass in front of me in a dimly lit lounge wearing blouses and pin skirts that were unknown to them just three years prior. This was 22 and this was sexy. Dear Darnell: You’re 30 now. The woman you’re in love with sits at a computer all day, and randomly texts you complaints about coworkers and photos all day of her making funny faces. Her Mondays are spent on couches with books by David Sedaris and her Tuesday mornings are spent debating with herself about paying you a visit or going to happy hour with the girls. She laughs at your corny jokes, and asks questions about the life you lived on the beach with women she knows would never be sexier than she is

at this very moment. You are 30, and sexy includes: stamped passports, college degrees hanging from a wall, and enough money in the bank to take a random trip to Paris in April just to see the rain the films were always talking about. It’s that law of attraction that tells us “like attracts like.” I look good on beaches in Freeport in my speedos, and she’s gorgeous in her high-waist bathing suit on the edge of Costa Rica. Our degrees hang like art in the Louvre, and we eat out when neither of us feel like cooking. Like attracts like, and I am not above the law. And while you’re not too far removed from turning your neck on a beach when the 20-year-old coeds walk by in what seems like Saran Wrap, you’ve redefined her as cute, and the woman you love is the only one you can find sexy.

BRUTHA_CREATING THE BALANCE

Don’t Be A Slave To Your Dick By David Wygant www.davidwygant.com

20

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // SUMMER ISSUE 2012

Most guys are a slave to their dick. And while such bluntness may draw raised eyebrows or scoffs, there is more truth to this than one may realize. Here’s the theory behind this, and how you can detach yourself from it to get the woman you desire. Because only when you think with the right head, would women really want it all. It’s the funniest thing in the entire world. You know how you crave the most incredible sex, and you pray you will find a girl who loves and enjoys playing with your dick? The problem is that you’re so into that, that women don’t become interested in providing such release. But if you’re a really powerful man who engages everybody around him, women would want to have fun with you – in more ways than one. Women love pleasing powerful men’s dicks. They really do. The more powerful you are, the better pleasure you’re going to get from a woman because she wants to please you. You also have to be a good lover and be willing and good at pleasing her, in return. It’s not just about being powerful either. You have to exude charisma and demand attention by just your mere presence. It’s about being able to control your energy, you exemplify that confidence and self-assurance that can become more sexually attractive than any physical attributes without being intentionally so. Most guys, unfortunately, make their power and energy work against them. They are slaves to their dicks. They are slaves to a lot of things, actually, which is a shame. When you are a slave to your own dick, you walk into a place (whether it’s a coffee shop, a store, or your classroom), and it’s like having a giant flashing neon sign on your forehead that’s flashing, “Desperate! Desperate! Desperate!” Most women, even if they desire the sexual encounter, do not want to fall into bed with a man that everyone can pick out as the desperate type, willing to welcome anyone that comes his way. They want a guy who is confident and owns his energy, who would prove himself worthy even with just a simple smile. Even when a girl is on the hunt for that partner herself, she still wouldn’t want the one lounging about broadcasting their prowess, the one who sees them as a piece of meat on a grill. This type of guy objectifies her - and she can see it. The other day I was watching two guys walk down the street, and there was this

beautiful woman walking toward them. They didn’t talk to her or attempt to engage her in polite conversation. Instead, they immediately began thinking with their dicks and, the minute the she walked past, they both turned their head and checked out her ass - which objectified her even more. The fact is they’ll never sleep with a woman like that, because they don’t know how to connect with her. So occasionally they’ll either (a) jerk off to a woman like that, or they’ll get some Internet porn, or they’ll get themselves a craigslist hooker, or (b) maybe they’ll do nothing and remain totally frustrated. This is because their dick is controlling them. Their dick is telling them to remain frustrated. Their dick is telling them “You know what? You can’t get someone. I just want to get laid. I want to feel her. I want to touch her. I want to get in bed with her.” This is just not the way it works, because beautiful women don’t want to feel that energy. Remember that when I talk about “beautiful women,” that a beautiful woman is whatever is in your eyes. I have different tastes. My friends have different tastes. I may not date or think the women you’re dating are hot. It doesn’t really make a difference. It’s not me. That’s another way that men think with their dick, too, because they’re always trying to impress their friends. “Wow! Wasn’t she hot? Wasn’t she amazing? Check her out!” Men want “the trophy” and the fact is you don’t need to objectify her, brag to your friends, and prove yourself. The only thing you need to do is stop thinking with your dick! That’s your dick telling your friends, “Hey, my dick’s going to get involved with her.” Women just get turned off by that! They’ve seen it. They’ve smelled you. And they don’t want to be around that anymore. Having this mindset of thinking with your dick is also bad for you. It’s bad for your soul. For those of you who don’t know what I mean by objectification, it’s something that our society does all day, every day. It’s in magazines and on television. Men objectify women and women objectify men (although men do it more to women). It’s

in the advertising culture and on television. It’s everywhere, and it permeates every aspect of society to the point where we’ve dehumanized people. We only look at them for their body or what they have to offer us physically rather than emotional, mentally, or even spiritually. The outlook on human beings has become fragmented, and we no longer look at the whole person. Be different! Be an individual. Be independent and think differently than the average slave out there. Remember and remind yourself that you’re talking to a human being, and that human being has feelings, pressure points, and interests. You can relate to that person. This is not a piece of meat. Always remind yourself of that. If, however, you’re in the majority of men out there who after hearing this are saying, “Man, I get it! I want to live this life. I’ve never lived this life, and I’m willing to try to live this life”, then you’re ready to evolve and move on to the next step and up to the next level. You’re willing to go put your dick in your pants, let your mind connect with a woman, and realize that she is going to pull your dick out of your pants. You’re not going to pull your dick out of your pants anymore. The guys who objectify women walk around all night with their dick in their hands hoping someone is going to stroke it. When these guys go home at night, their dick is still in their hands. So don’t be one of these guys and don’t be a slave to your dick!

This is not a piece of meat. Always remind yourself of that.

BRUTHA_CREATING BRUTHA_WORK IT THE BALANCE

How To Deal With A Stuck-Up Woman. By David Wygant www.davidwygant.com

So you’re out at night enjoying yourself, making your rounds, talking to everyone, working the room, never trying to chase or pick up women and letting the ones you’re attracted to come to you. You’re talking to everyone, having a good time, and pretty soon great things start happening, just like I said they would. And just like that, you start talking to a really hot woman. But then the worst thing happens – she turns out to be a raging bitch. You know the kind. She kind of looks at you, raises an eyebrow, and says something really obnoxious, like: “Um, why are you talking to me?” or “My boyfriend is in the bathroom you know…” or, the most insulting, “Yeah whatever, that’s nice. BYE little man!”

So in your own head, you’re furious. What a bitch, you think. I mean, who does she think she is? I was just talking and having a good time. It’s not like I was hitting on her! Does she really think she’s that great? She’s not the prize, I’m the prize, you think to yourself. You want to say something; really show her up and give her a piece of your mind. But now she’s talking to someone else so you can’t just go and interrupt them. So, you walk away feeling rejected. And you can’t get that one interaction out of your head, and it’s just ruined your night. 22

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // SUMMER ISSUE 2012

If this is you, you need to change your mindset. Mindset really is the most important thing. Because while it is true that you are the prize; you are only the prize if you really believe it. So, here’s what I would do in that situation.

From the very start, I don’t bother to censor myself and I have fun talking to everyone. That’s just my personality. But I also believe that life is all about the people you surround yourself with - and I don’t surround myself with stuck-up, arrogant people. If she comes at me with a really ridiculous statement, I like to be a little immature myself at times, so I’ll play along and be equally ridiculous back. If she asks me why I’m talking to her, I’ll be honest. If I thought she was really hot and I wanted to get to know her to see what she was like as a person, that’s exactly what I’ll say. And I’ll say it with a big grin and a twinkle in my eye. If she tells me she

has a boyfriend, I’ll say something like, “Congratulations, that’s quite the accomplishment.” Or if she says her boyfriend is in the bathroom, I’ll ask her, “Number 1 or Number 2? I just want to know how much time I have to flirt with you!” - a line I think may have been borrowed from a past film. And after a quick exchange I’ll just walk away. I’ll smile and say, “Well that was an ‘interesting’ conversation, have a nice night,” and I’m on to the next person. And that’s it. A woman who is blatantly rude to me has just ejected herself out of the pool of people I want to spend my time talking to. And that’s the most important thing you can learn. You can come up with all the comebacks and cocky little lines you want (it works on some immature girls because, to be honest, only an immature girl would say something like that), but the bottom line is that you need to learn how to dismiss her. You

You know the kind. She kind of looks at you, raises an eyebrow, and says something really obnoxious..

need to learn how to walk away feeling great about being the better person, and forget about that interaction immediately. If a woman says something to you that makes you upset, ask yourself why you’re getting so upset. It’s not your problem that she treats perfect strangers like complete crap. No need to try to overcome that attitude. The last thing you need is a person with a negative attitude who has decided it’s ok to treat people like that. The way I think is like this: I don’t need to win every time. I don’t need to teach her a lesson. There are tons of women out there to meet who are both attractive and friendly. I don’t need to say, “Ha! You were wrong about me, in your face bitch!” That’s all ego talking. It’s all about practicing abundance in every aspect of your life. An abundant mindset is crucial to developing an attractive personality. You don’t have anything to prove to anybody, so start acting that way.

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // SUMMER ISSUE 2012

This summer is going to be hot! And I’m not talking about the bikinis, parties and late-nights kind of hot. I’m talking about the sweat-producing humidity caused by the sun. If you live in a tropical climate like me where it can easily go up to 99 degrees any given day, then you sooner than later realize the importance of keeping your hygiene under control. Being active (working, jogging, partying, etc.) means your body will produce sweat that in turn produces body odor. And nobody is a fan of bad body-odor!

Shaving should not be feared. Using the right techniques and products will leave you feeling refreshed and alive.

A good way to avoid bad body odor is to trim or shave off your facial and pubic hairs. More men are becoming keen in keeping pubic hairs to a minimum as it cuts down on body odor. Some key areas you should consider trimming before the summer heat are:

• Apply high-quality shave oil creating a slick surface

Steps to Shaving with a Razor: • Exfoliate or cleanse area with a facial scrub or soap/body wash and rinse with hot water to remove excess grime and open pores.

for the razor to cut smoothly and prevent razor rash. After, apply a detergent-free shave cream with your fingers creating an even, thick foam.

• Always make sure your hands and utensils are clean. • Using a clean razor, gently run the razor across your

Face

skin, completing easy areas first.

Arm pits

• Splash cold water onto your neatly shaven area to

Chest

wash off excess residue and close up pores. Then apply an alcohol-free, moisturizing post-shave product.

Back Pubic area

To shave areas such as legs, chest, back, arms and pubic areas it would be best to use Nair’s Line of Products for Men (Shower, Spray or Cream Based) than a razor.

Nuturing Brotherhood is about uniting our young men for a positive purpose.” I could not have agreed more with Sheldon Saint, one of thirtythree mentor and student participants in the first ever all-male Art Exhibition hosted by The Bahamas’ Public Treasury Art Program (PTAP). The program is an initiative which aims to recognize and encourage young Bahamian artists, enabling and empowering them to showcase outstanding local and regional arts. It is further geared towards achieving better appreciation and commitment to the arts and art education in The Bahamas. The program itself launched in September 2011 with a ‘Bahama Mama’ exhibition where it hosted twenty-five talented Bahamian female artists and writers at The Public Treasury’s building on East Street, Nassau, New Providence. However, on May 18th 2012, Nassau came alive through the work of our BRUTHA’s amazing art pieces. Many individuals gathered

together to view and celebrate the hard work and efforts of this talented pool of men. “This experience has challenged all the artists to reflect on the bond amid the generations of males,” says artist Damaso Gray, “and express the unity of men in society.” Participating student, Yohancé Bowen felt, “…most grateful to be one of the chosen students to represent aspiring male artists, and to be an inspiration and example to other young men.” Artist and mentor, Zyandric Jones, who describes himself as a non-traditional artist, says to all the young men out there, “… as long as it’s on a positive note, just do what you want to do…I got so many discouraging remarks because being from the island nobody goes to school for art, but you just have to do what you need to do.” The Exhibition is open now until October 2012. It is our hope that you support our Brutha’s in the cause, not only in art and art education but the fostering of unity and support amongst each other regardless of individual paths and beliefs. That is truly Nuturing Brotherhood!

Christopher “Sketch” Carey has

BIG CITY DREAMS FROM PENS TO MICS

By Ana-Alicia Burrows

BRUTHA_FEATURE STORY

54

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // SUMMER ISSUE 2012

It was a name borne from a childhood hobby, one that has culminated to define a man rich with artistic talent and with the determination to design his successes within the entertainment industry. Chris Carey evolved from that young boy who had always been seen drawing, to a man with a plan to set trends in music, a man ready to sketch his own future. “Sketch, as he has been dubbed, was born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas and was reared surrounded by all things music because of the talents within his family. Both his father and uncle were part of the internationally famous group, Baha Men, and were the main persons that taught him those initial rules and basics of music. Even more, his grandmother was a pastor and was known for her talent of singing, a talent she has passed on to her grandson. It was within that Church setting that Sketch had his first performance, singing to the congregation at the tender age of ten. It is an upbringing akin to many of Sketch’s contemporaries, including CJ Priest and Sammie Star. And, like them, Sketch is poised and ready for greatness.

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // SUMMER ISSUE 2012

55

With the passion and drive to pursue such a career, Sketch began producing music from the out-set. But that initial stage was not without its drawbacks. “When I started,” says Sketch, “I didn’t know what was what. I had to feel. I got a few lashes…I started beat-making and sometimes I had records stolen. I had to learn. People would take advantage but I had to learn from it. Quick.” Those hard lessons were what built his motivation within the industry, prompting him to become his own businessman and take control. Sketch sees music as his life; it is what keeps him going and, so, he could see himself doing nothing but pursuing it despite the initial hardships. Such drive was possibly the prompt behind the move to New York, where Sketch currently resides. It is where he has begun creating an empire all his own, using the opportunities he views as more receptive to someone like him, someone wanting to make it in such a tough and demanding world. “New York is just full of opportunities,” he says. “There are more avenues and I’m meeting producers, singers, and songwriters.” It is more rewarding, in his eyes, when compared to Nassau, a place with no real industry for newcomers and one that is only just beginning to build itself up. In time, it can happen for Nassau but Sketch views the New York stage as more compelling. 56

BRUTHA_FEATURE STORY

But how does he remain relevant in a place known for its competitiveness and the hard-neck approach within the industry? “By being original, learning as much as I can, and continuing to grow and evolve.” That is his ticket. Sketch believes in the power that such thinking ignites and has learned to push off from his weaknesses instead of succumbing to them. Doing so has kept him going all this time and will continue to keep him growing until he succeeds. “I want to excel, to continue doing music, to try new things, to build my portfolio, to win awards and extend my talents.” So many dreams in one young man, but they are dreams he’s working to turn into realities. And worked has he. Sketch has already built an impressive list of collaborations, with artists such

58

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // SUMMER ISSUE 2012

as Keri Hilson, Olivia from G-Unit, Sean Kingston and Neyo having already become a part of his working portfolio. He has even had the privilege of working alongside Jerry Wonder, an A-class producer that has worked with the likes of Justin Beiber, Busta Rhymes, and The Fugees. But his sights do not stop there, as Sketch hopes to one day work with even more renownedartists such as Tank and Kiki Shed, a gospel singer whose voice he finds powerful. He’s even set his sights on acts like Lady Antebellum, Katy Perry, and David Guetta – his way of trying new things. And I’m sure, if he’d been given the chance, Sketch would’ve loved to add the late, great Michael Jackson to that list of dream collaborations, as the King of Pop has always been his idol. “His death felt as though I’d lost part of myself…part of my [soul].”

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // SUMMER ISSUE 2012

That disappointment aside, Sketch has marketed himself as a triple threat as he not only produces music but sings as well as writes songs, a way to stay fresh and relative. It is also a great motivation for him when those three sides culminate to create one great moment, that of feeling good when a record’s been heard and has been well-received by those listening. “It’s a great thing to feel that,” Sketch muses. It is what keeps him going and moving forward, knowing that he’s striving. All of this man’s hard work and growth has all been towards his current project, his first big step into the world. His upcoming album “Olympus” is inspired by the 300, Spartacus notion. It is, according to him, “everything hardcore, thrashing sounds…heavy, big sounds” and it will be his first, real album. But it certainly won’t be the last given his drive to stay in the game. Sketch has big plans for his future career and hopes to one day elevate himself enough to open the doors for those that come after. He believes that there are those out there who can and should do the same as him. His advice to those hopefuls: “Keep striving. If it’s your dream and you really love it, then go for it…attack it…and greatness will come.” Surely such greatness is in store for this driven and talented young man. So, keep your ears and eyes peeled. Sketch is certainly on the rise.

“People don’t like to think, ‘how can I be different from this person here’ but that is what you need to do in order to truly stand out.”

THE MANY FACES OF TONY GRANT JR. By Taj Duncombe

I’m sure, like me, a few persons have raised their eyebrows at the name emblazoned on the headline. Tony “Teej” Grant. He’s fresh and new by industry standards and is only still working towards making that mark that would leave his name imprinted within everyone’s mind. Either way, there is an impressive stature that he presents and, for those of you still wondering, his name is really Tony Grant Jr. Teej Grant is an activist, photojournalist, magazine publisher and host - A true Man on The Rise by Brutha Magazine standards. Most commonly, however, Mr. Grant is the host of the popular show, “Coffee Break” on Guardian Talk Radio.

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // SUMMER ISSUE 2012

BRUTHA: TEEJ:

Tell us about your family background. Well my father is from West End, Grand Bahama but he is a descent from the East Indians that traveled west. My mother is from Ragged Islands, but her ancestors are Ghanaian and British. My father and mother are Apostles and are the founders of Agape House Ministries in Freeport.

BRUTHA:

If I was an investor and you had 30 seconds of my time, tell me about your company and what it is that you do?

TEEJ:

Extract Magazine is a magazine that does what no other publication in The Bahamas does; it speaks directly to the social issues we face here in the nation. In such a critical time as this, awareness is paramount. We plan to raise that awareness at Extract Magazine so Bahamians can see things as they are.

BRUTHA: What were some of your childhood hobbies? TEEJ:

Well living off of $25 a week for my father, mother and sister was rough, so all of my hobbies were stuff that my father did. My father played basketball in college, so I loved basketball from the age of two. Other than that, writing was always something I loved doing. I would read the dictionary just to find new words to include in my journal. Sounds crazy, but I loved it that much.

BRUTHA:

How did Coffee Break begin?

TEEJ:

I had been getting a lot of recognition through my YouTube videos, and Extract Magazine, and was approached to do a radio show and took up the offer. They asked me if I had ever done live radio before.

BRUTHA: How do you differentiate yourself from the competition? TEEJ:

Well I have no competition when it comes to Extract Magazine. Other magazines such as [Brutha] target a different reader. So it is up to The Bahamian people to decide whether they want to read something that can inform them and heighten their awareness, or something that will satisfy their sense of vision. It is totally up to them.

BRUTHA:

So what do you use to motivate yourself?

TEEJ:

I have the magazine, the show, and straight black is – what we do - we take weekly visits [to different youth places] and try to help out. What keeps me motivated is the fact that I have the opportunity to do so much more than other people. I try to take advantage of it, and be comfortable, [be] like me. Straight black, we don’t talk about it, we just go and do what we need to do.

BRUTHA:

How did that come about?

TEEJ:

It came about because there was a group of us that were really tired of politics, and we don’t care about FNM, PLP, or DNA, We’re going to vote for whomever is best. We say straight black because everyone gets so color [obsessed] this time of year; we wanted to remind Bahamians of the black in our flags, which represents the strength of the people. So we’re an empowerment group, we want to encourage kids to get

BRUTHA: Who was your most interesting guest thus far? TEEJ:

An exotic dancer. You know strip clubs are not legal here in the Bahamas, but she came in and was very fearless about what she did. She was so open, raw, and blunt.

BRUTHA: How was the photography aspect of the Nassau Guardian? TEEJ:

Newspaper photography is very demanding. It can kill your creativity sometimes, and so you have to motivate yourself to get new angles, new ideas, and new material in order to get great photos.

an education, because that is the key to fixing most things, to poverty, to crime. We talk about it, we don’t have to say, ‘we did this, we did that’ because the more you tell people what you do, the less sincere you tend to be. Everyone is satisfied, and content about what [we] did at the end of the day. BRUTHA:

What are some of your future plans?

TEEJ:

My future plans are to continue to do my part in society and be the best I can be for myself, my family and for my nation. I just want to contribute in a way I can best contribute.

BRUTHA:

Do you believe there are sufficient resources available for people to start their own business?

TEEJ:

That’s a tough question. Right now, things are rough, but with technology and the world of information at our fingertips, I feel we have the knowledge in front of us to build an empire. If we want it real bad, and we are hungry for it, we will go and get it.

BRUTHA:

It is hard making that first step, what advice would you give to other aspiring Brutha’s out there

TEEJ:

To be real, it takes HUMONGOUS BALLS to step out and do your own thing in society. If you are different, people are quick to pass judgment on you and say things about you that are completely fiction. “Bruthas” must understand that in order to make that first step, you have to believe in yourself completely and be confident in what you stand for and represent. Once this is established, the steps you take after will be a lot lighter and easier to make.

BRUTHA:

We’re at the end, but do you agree with the title of “man on the rise?”

TEEJ:

Every man is on the rise, I feel like every man should aspire to be better than he was last year. You should always be stepping it up. Every year I try to evolve, and stay current and relevant. Last year I was working for the Nassau Guardian, this year I’m on the radio, my show, my ideas. I have Extract Magazine, and Straight black. Once it’s productive, I’m about it.

It has been said that OLED has the potential to outperform any current flat-panel display technology to date. However, this has yet to reach US shelves so we will have to wait to test the theory.

I’m not certain but the Parrot Zik comes in pretty close. It has an elegant look, comfortable to wear and has no buttons for volume or switching music. “To turn up the volume of your streamed music, just swipe your finger up the back of the right earcup. To track up, swipe forward; track down, swipe back. And to pause? Just take off the headset and it knows to stop the music until you put it back on — very smart.” Moreover, this impressive piece of wireless technology packs in a noisecancelling feature when you have to take a call. I say you give it a try!

Could you be in a relationship with a toxic person?

BY MASTIN KIPP

A lot of people come to me with one shocking realization: they don’t want to be in a relationship with someone. It could’ve been someone they were dating, a friend, or even someone they’ve been married to for quite a number of years. Either way, the truth of their desired non-involvement strikes them like a hot iron; after that, they seek nothing more than to escape the relationships coming to ask me: “How long should I wait to leave?” In the end, there is really only one answer and it comes in the form of another question, posed to them: “How long do you want to keep suffering?” You see, there is this preconceived idea that if we truly love someone, that we will sacrifice and suffer for them to “prove” our love. That we should endure whatever emotional – and sometimes physical – hardships arise just to make sure such concepts of love are never dismantled. And, somehow, if we take a stand and no longer accept or tolerate negative behavior, we are somehow labeled as “selfish” or “unloving”. Finding this balance is one of the key masteries of life. As my parents,

who have been married for 32 years, will tell you - a relationship is never 50/50. Many times it is 90/10 or 10/90. Showing, therefore, that at any given moment, it’s not totally equal. I am not suggesting that things should be severed the second things get hard. No, no, no. Although such a reaction would seem normal given the human instinct to be safe and not feel pain, it does not always constitute the solution of packing up and leaving. Please do not get that impression. I am suggesting, that if things are always 90/10 and one person is giving and giving and the other person is only receiving, or worse, then it becomes more a question of the nature of love. It is not a testament to how much you love someone if you are constantly giving to them and never receiving love back. Remember: in order to be able to give love, we have to be full of love. The way to be full of love is to do things that love and honor ourselves, so we feel full, free and have more love to give away. Within a relationship, part of being able to create an environment where you are full is choosing someone who loves you in your power,

rather than in your weakness. It’s also about choosing someone who doesn’t make you their Higher Power, but has their own relationship with The Universe and their calling. This way, you are not in a relationship with someone who is an emotional vampire; both of you are getting filled from other sources and then showing up for each other from a place of fullness rather than emptiness. This is a much different situation than constantly giving to someone with no return. That isn’t the true nature of love - that’s being in a relationship with a vamping soul and there is nothing wrong with picking up and walking away, now. Don’t prove your love to someone by showing how much you are willing to suffer for them; instead prove your love by showing how much you are willing to live and be full with them! Do you feel me? Love Mastin.
