BRUTHA_EDITOR’S LETTER

EDITOR’S LETTER

To my Brutha,

Did you wake up this morning thinking oh, I’m up again or did you jump out of bed shouting it’s a new day to make greater things happen? If you answered to the latter, good for you! The reality is most of us relate more to the former because we’re living a life that we do not approve of. Maybe it’s the lack of security or the judgment that comes with following our heart’s desire to live on your own terms but you must start somewhere. It’s amazing how a dream can influence an idea, an idea influences a thought process and that thought process can blossom into an empire of purpose. As humans, we tend to get so caught up in societal expectations that we fail to live out our own God-given purpose. Three things you should seek out and define today are: Your passion, your faith and your happiness. I want you to dwell on the words of these great people: On Passion: “It’s hard to wait around for something you know may never happen, but it’s harder when you know it’s everything you want.” – Anonymous On Faith: “The belief that God will do everything for man is as untenable as the belief that man can do everything for himself. It, too, is based on a lack of faith. We must learn that to expect God to do everything while we do nothing is not faith but superstition.” - Martin Luther King, JR On Happiness: “Be who you are, say what you mean, and work on what’s truly important to you. The more authentic you are, the more successful you’ll be.” – Ralph Marston Inside these pages we’ve profiled some Brutha’s just like you who went against the odds, followed their passion and came out successful. Also, you’ll find amazing articles and tips on money management, decorating for the season, feeding yourself and your guests and then keeping fit. We’ve also brought in some amazing stylists to show you the best selections for the winter season not to mention some relationship answers you’ll be sure to love. HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Love your Brutha,

Anita C is not only a photographer but an artist. Envy, as many of her clients called her, is a graphic artist, clothing stylist, theatrical makeup artist, music video Director and Semi-Pro Photo Editor wrapped in to one.

Since the launch of Anthony’s Line “Lung Pearl”, his designs have been worn by Ms.Jade, Charli Baltimore, Kendra G and more. Still, Anthony Chad is multitalented. He has also been sought after for his styling talents and was recently hired as recording artist, Jade Alston’s lead stylist. To his credit, his styling work has recently been featured on Essence.com, Vogue Italia, MediaTakeOut.com, The New York Times and The YBF.com just to name a few.

Makario became immersed in photography after helping his father for several years in the family’s videography business. After hearing his father speak of his desire to branch into photography, Makario purchased his first camera primarily to make his father jealous and to push him into pursuing his goal of expanding the business. Makario first self-studied the craft for a year, teaching himself the proper use of the tools of the trade before starting Virtue Photography and arranging his first photoshoot in 2009. The company evolved further to ByMakario as Makario felt this title better suited his style, which focuses on lighting, composition and detail.

Raynardo “Nardo” Williams has a passion for fashion! Nardo uses his own unique style to provide styling expertise for men and women by choosing looks for special events, personal shopping, styling at photo shoots, and transforming the less fashionable into stylish, trendsetters. In 2011, Nardo established Nardo Wardrobe Consultants (NWC), with the mission to provide services such as personal shopping, closet organizing, and presentations on fashion. Since Nardo Wardrobe Consultant’s inception, business has taken off in Nardo’s favor, proving him to be a major talent for the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, USA.

Growing up with an eye for art, being different and establishing crazy, creative ideas was never an issue for her. Anita surrounded herself with positive and inspiring people. This young woman gets her motivation by just looking at the simplest things; establishing new and electrifying ideas for her photo shoots leaving her colleagues and viewers wanting more. She loves doing this and would not change it for the world.

BRUTHA_POWER & MONEY

8 WAYS

To Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck

By Craig Bain

I’m sure we have heard the term “economic recession” more times than we can remember and it seems more played out than the term “YOLO”. While it is obvious that we only live once, it’s also obvious that the global economy has really taken a big hit. Jobs are hard to come by, the cost of living is increasing, yet our salaries remain the same. It’s rough out there; living from paycheck to paycheck and going broke before your next payday in a cycle that seems to never end. Paid on Friday, broke on Tuesday struggling to make it again till the next Friday. Does that sound familiar? The days of the week may change a bit, but the story remains the same. It’s hard to survive in the long run living paycheck to paycheck as you accumulate more debt. Your immediate future is so dependent upon your next paycheck, if something unexpected comes up; you are in no position to handle it. A little inconvenience like a flat tire, a bathroom leak, a sudden onset of the flu and you’re in trouble because you’re in no position to do anything about it until your next paycheck. There are a few things you can do however, to get on top of your finances and help to break that never ending cycle of living paycheck to paycheck.

1: Create and stick to your budget.

Figure out your weekly or monthly expenses such as your bills and other payments you have to make. If all of your expenses can fit into your budget, then your income is fine. However, if your expenses add up to more than you make, you probably need to cut a few things out.

2: Cut out the unnecessary.

I understand that you want those extra cable channels or that you want that data plan for your phone, but if it doesn’t fit in your budget do you really need it? Sometimes it’s as easy as just prioritizing what is important and what isn’t. Evaluate yours wants versus yours needs.

By Craig Bain 10

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // WINTER ISSUE 2012

3: Track your spending. Can’t figure out where your money is going every week? Track your spending and make a note of where your money goes. Collect receipts and maybe you’ll notice a few spending habits that can be decreased or eliminated altogether.

4: Don’t keep up with the Joneses.

Do you really need the iPhone 5 or the new iPad Mini? Don’t try to keep up with others just to fit in or to look good. In reality, the people you are trying to keep up with may be just as broke as you. Live your life by what you do, not what you wear or own!

5: Change your mindset.

You aren’t about that life of keeping up with the Joneses! Once you’ve identified the unnecessary, you can make the necessary adjustments to maintaining your budget. Stop ignoring your financial reality and living beyond your means! Yeah, you only live once, but that’s no excuse to live recklessly. By understanding your financial situation you are better able to adjust your spending and lifestyle habits.

6: Sacrifice.

We must be able to sacrifice what we are for what we want to become. Sometimes, we have to give a little just to get. It’s okay to pack leftovers for lunch or to stay in a few Saturday nights if it helps to manage your budget and save a few bucks. Focus on where you want to be rather than where you are now and remember nothing good in life comes without sacrifice.

7: Be Creative

Yeah, your budget is tight but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a social or dating life. Sacrifices are important, but being creative helps a whole lot too. Maybe you can take your love interest for a walk on the beach rather than to dinner and a movie? You and your boys can plan Football Sunday at home instead of meeting up at a local sports bar and save some money on a few overpriced drinks and chicken wings.

8: Find additional income.

This may be the most difficult solution, after all, if it were so easy to find another job most people wouldn’t be living paycheck to paycheck. Jobs are out there albeit it may not be the most ideal job other forms of income help greatly. Maybe you have a skill you can make some money from? You can draw portraits or fix busted water pipes on the side. After spending countless of time and effort fooling around with your car or electronics, maybe you have mastered how to change brake pads or how to install body kits? By creating a budget, tracking your spending, being creative and willing to sacrifice, you are on the right track of breaking that terrible cycle of living paycheck to paycheck.

BRUTHA_SHE SAYS Cheating is one of the most dreadful occurrences in a relationship. Both parties involved – whether you are the cheater or the one being cheated on – can find themselves dealing with some serious emotional consequences after the act. There are different factors and effects of cheating and not all people handle it the same way. So what if you have done the unacceptable and find yourself in this predicament? How does it affect your partner and what does it say about you? Again, recognizing that everyone handles things differently – here are a few things to consider.

Let’s define cheating. Not all cheating is the same and before I address the issue itself, defining the forms of cheating is essential. There is emotional cheating, physical cheating, emotional/physical, and reactionary. Emotional Cheating occurs when a person who is in a relationship becomes emotionally intimate with another individual with the absence of physical intimacy. Often individuals who emotionally cheat feel they are lacking support, understanding, and/or love from their current partner. Others just happen to find someone else they are equally as attracted to as their partner and begin to develop a bond. Physical cheating, which seems to be the most loathed, is simply the act of having sexual relations with someone outside of your relationship. Reactionary cheating is either emotional and/or physical cheating in reaction or revenge to your partner’s behavior. Now that we have the definitions, let’s address a couple of scenarios.

16

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // WINTER ISSUE 2012

Once a cheater, always a cheater.

move forward. But if you’re not serious, refer back to the above section. Next, apologize, but only say it if you really mean it.

Everyone’s heard the saying that once you’re a cheater, you’re always a cheater. And for a good number of people who cheat, that is true. We all have known someone who just can’t be faithful and committed to one person no matter how hard they try. So what are you to do, and what is your partner to do? Simple. Be real and get out of the relationship. If you find that you just can’t be monogamous, then don’t attempt to do it until you’re ready. And if you find that you will never be ready, accept within yourself that being monogamous isn’t a reality for you on your life’s journey.

After the apology, sit down with your partner and discuss the reason and cause of your behavior. Be mindful that your partner may become insecure, question what it is about them that caused you to cheat, or begin to think very low of you. Ask your partner how it makes them feel and how you two should move forward. Find out what it is you need to do to make them feel secure and regain their trust and be sure to do those things. If they accept you and are willing to work on the relationship, then by all means, move forward. But if moving forward causes you or your partner too much pain and you find yourself being ridiculed and constantly accused, then do the best thing for the both of you – LEAVE! Though you may be the reason your partner is hurting and distrusting, staying with them in this case will not help. Healing must take place and that can’t happen in an unhealthy environment.

Let’s face it. While society tells us that monogamy is the most acceptable form of relationship – that just isn’t true for many. Yes it may be hard for people to accept that you are the type to have multiple partners, but the only person that matters at the end of the day is yourself! So if this is you, either find a partner who accepts your cheating behavior or find another form of relationship such as a polygamous or open relationship.

Time to decide. Baby I’m sorry and I’ll never do It again. So you’re monogamous, you love your partner and want to stay committed, but you had a slip-up. What happens now? First, be honest with yourself as to why you are in a committed relationship and why you want to be monogamous. After you have this self-reflection, and you are serious about monogamy, then

So in understanding the various types of cheating and the two types of cheaters, it all boils down to choice. Again, find out who you are and what you need. Don’t let the pressures of society or being with a particular person keep you from being honest with yourself and those involved. I know it sounds a bit idealistic, but you if you just can’t be monogamous – don’t force it. Find the style of relationship that best fits you. Trust me, although the type of people who meet your needs maybe harder to find, they are definitely out there. And if you fit the “Baby I’m Sorry” category, remember, be honest and be

sincere. Recognize why you did it and find ways you and your partner can move forward. But remember; don’t allow your mistake to be the rain cloud that hovers over your relationship. If you find you and your partner can’t heal and get passed the indiscretion, then it’s time to go. Cheating can be one of life’s most convoluted behavioral mishaps but everything teaches us something about ourselves. Learn from it, forgive yourself, grow and move on.

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // WINTER ISSUE 2012

By Darnell Lamont Walker

We search for the small, golden piece of the condom wrapper we bit off and spat across the room before we search the pillows and linen for any scent she may have left behind. Wrap the condom in a toilet paper ribbon and put the wrapper, in it’s entirety, inside the cereal box we threw away a few days ago, and bury that cereal box at the bottom of the garbage. Feel guilty for a few moments, take a piss and dismiss it, then go grab a few laughs with the friends who know you best. This is how the right after begins. Writing math theorems we were supposed to have memorized on desks three minutes before a test taught us early on how to live with guilt. We minimize it, rationalize, and move on. Shawn Carter told us that we have to learn to live with regret. We do. We send those women home in cabs we won’t pay for, swish around a little mouthwash and kiss our girlfriends, wives, lovers minutes later when they come walking through the door. Then we talk and laugh and smile. We tell ourselves our dicks won’t always frequent the available abysses, and will find themselves happy with just one. Since very possible, and rarely proven, we tell God that if the last dip into the girl pool goes undiscovered, we’ll stop. But the flesh is weak, isn’t it? What we aren’t telling ourselves, or maybe we are but doing a poor job convincing ourselves, is what we’re doing when we press send on that text message at 3:15am telling the girl from the bar that we’re bored and massages are free if she can get there before the sun comes up could be the savior of our relationship with the woman we love. Did this mother*cker just say cheating can be the savior of a relationship?

If carefully planned and immaculately executed, what happens after isn’t a four hour conversation about something of no interest to men, but a few laughs with the woman you love most because thanks to the one you had put the hotel room on her prepaid debit card, you released all your tensions and frustrations and all is now right with the world. What if, however, cheating opened up your lines of communication? What if you walked in the house and talked to her about what it was that made you cheat? Speaking with a group of coeds from George Mason University not long ago, I took a bold dive into the look of relationships. More and more people are coming to terms with the possibility of their partner cheating, so they make room. They blow the dust off their lines of communication, and remove “affair” from their list of deal breakers. But those lines aren’t yet fully open, and these small towns I often frequent haven’t evolved as much as they should sexually, so what normally happens after the affair is roughly two weeks of fear that the entire condom wrapper may not have been discarded and the one you love most will find it tucked in the fitted sheet. You spend those two weeks planning exciting adventures out of the house in places the “other woman” knows nothing about, and you promise yourself, for those two weeks, you won’t do it again. What happens after the cheating is you cheat again.

BRUTHA_CREATING THE BALANCE

An interesting topic that always seems to come across my desk involves guys who have female friends they want to date. I get all versions of this question: “David, How do I go about getting out of the friend zone and getting into the boyfriend zone?” This topic is always interesting to me, but it is especially interesting right now because I am currently dating a woman with whom I started out being just friends. When I first met her, she was actually dating somebody else. So how did I go from the friend zone to the boyfriend zone with her? Did I subliminally do some mind tricks on her to convince her that dating me would be a far better experience than the one she was having with her boyfriend? Absolutely not, what I did was I got to know her. For any of you who have been in the friend zone with a woman and wondered if there was a way out of it, here are four tips to help you get a woman to look at you in a different way:

and end. The problem is that a lot of men will meet a woman who is in a relationship and decide not 1. Don’t Be Afraid To to befriend her at all. Now I’m not suggesting that you become the Express Yourself. shoulder she comes to cry on when If you’ve already been friends for a long time with the female whom things are going wrong with her boyfriend. What I am suggesting is you’d like to date and she’s never that you can get to know her as a thought about you in a romantic way, then you need to understand person, because you never know where life may lead you down the that there’s a good chance she’ll never think of you romantically. The road. So don’t be a salesman, and way so many guys get themselves don’t berate her boyfriend. Get to know her. Be yourself. Have a good into the eternal friend zone is time with her, and see if natural that they played it too safe when chemistry develops between you. they first met that woman. They When you are genuine and take act in a very passive-aggressive way toward her. They are so afraid the time to get to know her as a person, she actually might start to of really expressing to her any indication of their romantic interest look at you in a different light and in her that they go out of their way end her relationship. not to express any feelings toward her at all.

2. Don’t Sell Yourself.

If you meet and become friends with a woman whom has a boyfriend, don’t sell yourself to her at all. Get to know her over a period of time. If a woman is attracted to you as a person, she could become attracted to you as a significant other. It all depends on at what place she is in her life. We all know that many relationships tend to “go south”

20

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // WINTER ISSUE 2012

3. Be Patient.

Four of my best relationships have been with women whom I was a friend before I became romantically involved with them. To do this, you must be patient. So many guys will not even befriend a woman if she has a boyfriend at the time they meet her. They won’t take the time to befriend her because they

She are only interested in immediate might actually feel the same way gratification, i.e., if they can’t get about you as you do about her. involved with her romantically right She may have been developing now they don’t want to have a crush on you too. So what any involvement with her at all. you need to do is take the risk, You have to stop thinking about because the friendship can survive immediate gratification all of the something like you asking her out time. Not every woman you meet on a date. You, however, don’t today is going to want to go out want to have to live with the selfwith you tonight. I tell guys to torture of never knowing if you think of befriending women they could have become romantically meet like building a portfolio of involved with her. Don’t wait to interesting people with whom they take action, thinking that she will can get together in the future. You say something to you if she is need to treat women you meet like interested. Even if she is interested, long-term investments. Just enjoy she might never say anything getting to know them as a person first. So don’t ever wait. It doesn’t right now, because you never matter if she says yes or if she says know what may happen. Chemistry no. It just matters that you take just might spark between the two the chance. You will define the of you. relationship one way or another, and then you can move forward.

4. Don’t Wait To Take Action:

Don’t ever ask a woman’s friends to tell you about what she is thinking, and in particular do not ask them what she thinks about you. If you are interested in a female friend and would like to get out of the friend zone with

So start being willing to take your time. Take time to look at all the women you’ve met in your life, and think about whether any of them stick out as being someone you’d like to get to know again. Perhaps she’s someone with whom you became friends when you first met. Send her a text or call her on the phone. Who knows? She might be more receptive to you the second time around.

THE NUMBER 1 REASON SHE DOESN’T WANT TO SLEEP WITH YOU AGAIN. So you went on a date with a girl. Had a little too much to drink. The two of you had fun. She ended up back in your place, and she slept with you. It was only your second date. She didn’t intend to go out and sleep with you that night, but it just happened. You get all excited. You think to yourself, “Great. The floodgates are open. Now we’re going to have regular sex over and over again.” She’s okay that she slept with you that night, but the next morning, she now thinks to herself that you’re not going to take her seriously in a relationship. It’s what I call “women’s guilt”. She’s going to tell her friends what happened, they’re going to advise her that she slept with you too quickly, and—my friend—that’s it for you. It doesn’t help that you play right into her fear. As a man, you’re going to text her the next day or at least call her and do the right thing. But when a woman sleeps with you too quickly, you need to make sure that you’ve called her by the end of the day. You don’t need to talk about how hot the night was or how great the sex was, but just tell her how great it was to be with her in the morning or to have her stay over. A lot of guys won’t even text. They’ll just wait a few days. They’ll play it cool and then you’ve really lost her at

They figure, “Hey, now that she’s slept with me, we can just get sexual over and over again without the build up.” And that’s playing into her fears; it’s playing into the fact that now she thinks all you want is sex, and exactly what you shouldn’t be doing. When a woman stays over that quickly, sleeps with you that quickly, you’ve got to make sure that your follow-up calls and texts are all about something fun to do with her. Maybe she wants to see the new movie that’s out. Take her to that. Maybe she’s been talking about a restaurant she wanted to go try out. Go there. Maybe she talks about a football game she wanted to go see if you’re lucky enough to have a football fan for a girlfriend. Take her there. Take her out on dates. Continue to take her out on dates and don’t talk about the sex, because if you continue to take her out on dates, then she will feel comfortable and the sex will be even better. You’ll have even more of it. But that’s the number one mistake most guys make. Most guys just go into the sexual mode. In reality, she still wants to be in date mode, because she slept with you a little too quickly. So make her feel comfortable, and the sex will come.

This year’s installment of FashArt was certainly the best thus far. The event captivated the evolution of the Arts in The Bahamas. At the helm of this advancement are the producers of FashArt 2012; Kedar Clarke, Scharad Lightbourne and Nik Barnes, who set the stage for some of the best new and emerging artists from every realm in The Bahamas. This year they took it to the next level with not giving you just one night, but two nights of what certainly was a landmark event of the fashion season. Located at the Public Treasury Building, night one brought a new meaning to the expression, “Ultimate Experience”. Every floor was captivated with a variety of different ambiances. Thus, taking you into a mood set for creative arousal. It was the perfect primer for the main event that helped to stimulate all of the human senses at every level. There was a mix of live performance, art, acrylics and photography by the best artists in the 242. Coupled with free give-a-ways from the Bahamas Telecommunications Company, scrumptious Japanese cuisine and the world’s best premium vodka, event goers were excited, enticed and thrilled. Yet, the stimulation would not have been complete without the fist pumping sounds of the two best DJ’s in The Bahamas, DJ May Day and DJ Ampero.

46

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // WINTER ISSUE 2012

This night certainly was not one without a cause. Monies were raised in support of the R.E.A.C.H. Foundation. Their mission is to support persons in The Bahamas who have Autism. Funds were raised by the fashion world, where Kedar Clarke himself designed bracelets in support of this much worthy cause. The highlight of the night was without a doubt the display of the fashion genius and creativity of the man himself, Mr. Theodore Elyett. He certainly did not disappoint with his collection that showcased a mixture of elegant lace, disco shimmer and bold symmetric patterns. All of which merged in effortless “regal chic!” I agree wholeheartedly with the producers that it certainly was a night of Canvas, Cocktails and Couture! The second evening of FashArt was the climax of the weekend’s festivities. Brining together the crème de la crème of artists from every realm of our archipelagic nation and abroad. Everyone brought their fashion “A” game showing that The Bahamas is ready to be the next fashion capital of the world. To set the stage for what promised to be an exhilarating night was Bahamian raised, international sensation, Angelique Sabrina, performing her chart topper, “Pull Up.”

Following such a stellar performance, the party was certainly in session. Everyone was ready to see what this year’s avantgarde fashion designers featured. Indeed no one left disappointed. The work of June K brought cohesive bling with daring lines in his designs. Herc & Lisa captivated the audience with bold military flair formed with a mix of eras, patterns and textures. Avis, with her 1940’s mauve color palate, produced a sophisticated flair throughout her collection. RiaGeorgina took us back to the Eastern Hemisphere with an Asian floral fusion. Though all were exceptional, it was Ports of Paradise, by Kishanna Sands, who took the crown as the Harl Taylor Emerging Designer. Her collection was certainly a showstopper with a blend of fun, flirt and whimsy. It was reminiscent of Betsey Johnson on one side and sexy regal with a touch of dark side. It was a liberating moment on the runway that showed this was a designer who was not afraid to be bold or to be different. It cannot be denied that this year’s FashArt proved that The Bahamas is ready to be put on the proverbial fashion map. We are ready to take the world by storm. Congratulations to the producers, cast and participants of this year’s event. BRUTHA MAGAZINE certainly can’t wait for the next installment!

This time of year we tend to forget about our physique and healthy habits and binge on all the treats and foods that this Holiday Season has to offer. We up our caloric intake and tend to reduce the amount of activities that we do. There are many reasons we may take a few steps back like spending more time preparing family gatherings or even rushing around for presents and when we don’t have time we usually eat fast foods or skip meals. Lets continue to progress and make positive gains. Here are a few exercises to keep your abs tight through Christmas.

Keeping your abs through Christmas! By Mikhail Barnett

Bicycles: 1

1. Lie face up on your mat and place your hands behind your head, lightly supporting it with your fingers. Bring the knees in to the chest and lift the shoulder blades off the floor without pulling on the neck. 2. Rotate to the left, bringing the right elbow towards the left knee as you straighten the other leg. Switch sides, bringing the left elbow towards the right knee.

2

Continue alternating sides in a ‘pedaling’ motion for 1-3 sets of 10 – 20 reps.

Captain’s Chair Leg Raises: 1. Stand on the chair and grip handholds to stabilize your upper body. 2. Press your back against the pad and contract the abs to raise the legs and lift knees towards your chest. Don’t arch the back or swing the legs up.

Slowly lower back down and repeat for 1-3 sets of 10 – 20 reps.

Long Arm Crunch:

1

1. Lie on a mat and extend the arms straight out behind the head with hands clasped, keeping the arms next to the ears. 2. Contract the abs and lift the shoulder blades off the floor.

2

3. Keep the arms straight and avoid straining the neck. If you feel neck pain, take one hand behind the head while keeping the other arm extended.

3 Lower and repeat for 1-3 sets of 10 – 20 reps. You can add intensity by holding a light dumbbell.

Forearm Plank:

1

1. Lie face down on mat resting on the forearms, palms flat on the floor. Push off the floor, raising up onto toes and resting on the elbows. Keep your back flat, in a straight line from head to heels. 2. Tilt your pelvis and contract your abdominals to prevent your rear end from sticking up in the air or sagging in the middle.

2 Hold for 30 to 60 seconds and repeat for 1 – 3 sets.

BRUTHA_ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

54

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // WINTER ISSUE 2012

Most times when people hear the word art they visualize a beautiful, ancient form of painting from the works of artists like Picasso, Amos Ferguson or Jackson Burnside. Rarely you will find someone actually visualizing printmaking, drawings and sculptures, etc. Modern day visual art is now taking form in society and it is proving to be quite amazing. For our Artist in the Spotlight, we’ve brought to you a Bahamian visual artist who is now threading waters and producing some stellar pieces. Meet Steven Schmid: The guy behind the vibrant, abstract art that is featured in various galleries around Nassau, Bahamas. He started his journey drawing from his younger days and recently picked up a pen again after working in the field of marine biology. His passion draws on his ability to formulate an idea from his mind and then transform it into something visual. He mixes things such as charcoal drawings, newspaper clippings, and paint to bring his pieces to life. His art moves us pass conventional pieces to abstract and thought-provoking ideas.

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // WINTER ISSUE 2012

BRUTHA_ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

How did you first venture into art? My older brother is actually an artist. He has been doing art for almost 16 years. I use to always watch him do art. About two or three years ago I just started drawing again. I was like I’m really passionate about this and I really want to get back into it. I stopped everything I was doing, did a 180 and was like let me go back to school.

How does it make you feel? It feels great while I’m making it. It’s usually by the end of a piece I just sit back and look for five minutes and then I have to try and make something else. I have a friend who says, “your only as good as your last piece.” So I’m constantly working.

56

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // WINTER ISSUE 2012

How would you say your work differ from other artists? I think a lot of art in the past, at least Bahamian art, has been catered to a certain audience where it was able to sell and be placed in a home environment. One of my things is that I’ve started to do more for the experience rather than for the money, I want people to come out and look. It becomes a different experience for them. Just to see something different.

And your family, they’re supportive of your talent? I think a lot of art in the past, at least Bahamian art, has been catered to a certain audience where it was able to sell and be placed in a home environment. One of my things is that I’ve started to do more for the experience rather than for the money, I want people to come out and look. It becomes a different experience for them. Just to see something different.

Do you think the Bahamian culture embraces artist like yourself? Or do you feel more can be done? Definitely more can be done. There’s this thing, especially with art like this, people would be like what is this? Right away they’ll say your crazy and leave it at that. However, a lot of the committees and organizations are now trying to help out, especially with the younger artists, but there was a dry period where nothing was really happening. I remember doing my BGCSEs, it was like one specific thing that looked good. If you did anything that was a little different that was it - you got a bad grade for it. Experimenting was never really an option, it was like playing it safe was always the best route. Now, I think it is heading in the right direction. For the past year there has been a lot of art shows popping up. I think we’re on the right path

So, what motivates you to continue your craft?

Where has your work been featured in the past? The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, Pop-up Studios, Doongalink Studios, National Art Antiques, and the Pro Gallery at the College of The Bahamas.

What were some of the problems coming up in the art world?

What is your favorite piece of what you’ve done thus far?

The main thing was pretty much the judgment from your peers, family and friends. Like with my current piece, people will look at you and think your embracing something terrible in your life. That was one of the biggest things that held me back. And a few times I was like I should just go back to what I was doing before.

A lot of people really like ‘There’s a Party in my Painting.’ I think that one just nailed it for me.

I would say the final image. One of my biggest things is just solving the problem. I’ve been working on my latest piece for a while and it’s always like a back and forth because usually you have this idea in your head and your like oh I’ve done this before, I’ll wrap this up in a week or so. I think the idea of just overcoming that challenge is enough for me.

Do you have any artists that you look up to? My brother. He is the one that really got me started. Other than that there is Hosea Palaour. Kendal Hanna and John Cox to name a few.

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // WINTER ISSUE 2012

57

BRUTHA_ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Anything you wish to share with up and coming artist out there? Just keep working. I think one of the biggest problems is people stop working and they wait for an idea to come and punch them in the face. Just start picking up stuff and messing around and let the process dictate the outcome.

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // WINTER ISSUE 2012

Romaine Salad with Chicken, Cheddar, Apples, Spiced Pecans and Cranberry Vinaigrette INGREDIENTS:

Salad: 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 3-4 medium) Salt and black pepper 1 tablespoon vegetable or canola oil 1/2 cup water 1 large head romaine lettuce, torn into bite-size pieces (about 8-10 cups) 8 ounces sharp or extra-sharp cheddar cheese, cut into 1/2-inch cubes 1 Granny Smith apple, cored and chopped or sliced thin 1/2 red onion, sliced thin 1/4 cup dried cranberries 1 cup spiced pecans, store-bought or following the simple recipe below Dried Cranberry Vinaigrette: 1/4 cup cranberry juice or water 1/4 cup dried cranberries 1/4 cup red wine or raspberry vinegar 1 shallot, peeled and quartered 1 small garlic clove, peeled 2 teaspoons fresh thyme (or 1/2 teaspoon dried) 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil Quick Spiced Pecans: 2 tablespoons butter 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice 2 cups pecan halves 1 tablespoon sugar

DIRECTIONS: For the chicken and salad, pat the chicken dry with paper towels and season both sides with the salt and pepper. Heat the oil in a large 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium heat until the oil is shimmering and hot. Add the chicken and cook until it is nicely browned on one side, about 3 minutes. Flip the chicken over, add the water, and cover the skillet. Cook the chicken, letting it poach, until it is cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a cutting board and let it cool slightly before carving. Toss the lettuce, cheese, apple, pecans, onion and dried cranberries together. Divide the salad among the serving plates. Slice the chicken on a diagonal and arrange over the salad. Serve with the vinaigrette. I prefer to let everyone douse their own salad with dressing, but you could toss the salad with 1/2 cup or so of the vinaigrette before assembling it on the plates and serve the extra dressing on the side. For the pecans, melt the butter in a 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium-low heat. Stir in the spices and then the pecans. Toast the nuts, stirring often, until the color deepens slightly and they are lightly toasted, about 5-7 minutes. Transfer the nuts to a bowl and toss with the sugar. Let them cool completely before tossing with the salad. For the dressing, combine the cranberry juice (or water) and cranberries in a small microwave-safe bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and microwave on high for one minute until hot. Process the hot cranberry mixture, vinegar, shallot, garlic, thyme, mustard, salt and pepper in a blender until the shallot and garlic are finely chopped. With the blender running, add the oil and continue to blend until the dressing is smooth and well-combined. Thin the dressing, if needed, with additional cranberry juice. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Roasted Turkey INGREDIENTS:

1 (14 to 16 pound) frozen young turkey For the brine: 1 cup kosher/coarse salt 1/2 cup light brown sugar 1 gallon vegetable stock 1 tablespoon black peppercorns 1 1/2 teaspoons allspice berries 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped candied ginger 1 gallon heavily iced water

For the aromatics: 1 red apple, sliced (no need to core or peel) 1/2 onion, sliced 1 cinnamon stick 1 cup water 4 sprigs fresh rosemary 6 leaves fresh sage Canola oil

DIRECTIONS: About 4-5 days before roasting, take the turkey out of the freezer (if using a fresh turkey, you can omit this step and just keep the turkey refrigerated), and place it in a 9X13-inch pan or larger to catch any raw turkey juices and place the pan in the refrigerator to thaw.

turkey safe from high, warmer temperatures. Move an oven rack to the lowest position and preheat the oven to 500 degrees F. Remove the bird from brine and rinse inside and out with cold water. Discard the brine.

1-2 days before roasting, combine the vegetable stock, salt, brown sugar, peppercorns, allspice berries, and candied ginger in a large stockpot over medium-high heat. Stir occasionally to dissolve solids and bring to a boil. Then remove the brine from the heat, cool to room temperature, and refrigerate until ready to use.

Place the bird on a roasting rack inside a half sheet pan or roasting pan and pat dry with paper towels. Combine the apple, onion, cinnamon stick, and 1 cup of water in a microwave safe dish and microwave on high for 5 minutes. Add steeped aromatics to the turkey’s cavity along with the rosemary and sage. Tuck the wings underneath the bird and coat the skin liberally with canola oil.

The night before roasting, combine the brine, water and ice in a large bucket (5-gallon or larger). Remove the innards from the turkey and place the thawed turkey breast side down in the brine. the turkey should be fully submerged in the liquid and ice. If necessary, weigh down the bird to ensure it is fully immersed, cover, and refrigerate or set in a cool area for 8 to 16 hours. Because I live in a cold climate, I usually stick my brining turkey on the back porch or in the garage, after I have made sure it will be cool enough to keep the

Reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees and continue to roast for another 1 1/2 to 2 hours, until the internal temperature of the turkey is 161 degrees. kedar clarke PASSION + FAITH + HAPPINESS

Speaking to Kedar Clarke sometimes feels more like sitting down with a Guru of peace, rather than a celebrated stylist. He has a peace about his person and his mind, which is probably the secret into his success. It is easy to understand why he is such a known figure in The Bahamas’ fashion scene. In the interview below you will find a young man that is high on life, and refuses to be defined.

BRUTHA_FEATURE STORY

Describe your passion and how it has changed your life. I wouldn’t say that I have one passion, I have so many passions but the overall gist of my passion is a purpose-filled life. Encouraging people to live their best lives. I feel as though each of us are blessed with different talents and the unfortunate part is a lot of us, because we probably don’t see a way of accomplishing some of them, because of the obstacles in life, we tend to give up easily. And I feel led to kind of encourage people. Not just in that regard but I’m a lover of fashion as well and I was able to couple my love for fashion and my love for people on the creative end.

When was the first time you acted as an image consultant? Back in college, I helped a friend who was an image consultant. Just helping was fun! I was always infatuated with magazines and being a magazine editor. I found so much fun on the creative side, and coming back home I didn’t see a way of that happening until I got hooked up with [various people]. It started as soon as I got back home.

68

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // WINTER ISSUE 2012

What are some of your favorite pastimes? Sleeping. I love sleeping. I love reading, and because I was an only child for 16 years, I’m a loner, so I read a lot, I write, I’m writing a book right now. Not a lot of people know that.

How did it make you feel? I love bringing out the best in people. And that’s what – fashion gets me off. I am at the height of my happiness during the times of fashions shows, creative directing, and shoots. I love to see talented people out there and getting noticed.

BRUTHA_FEATURE STORY

Do you transform into a different person when you are in your Who are your heroes, and why are they your element rather than heroes? regular life? Not really, probably because I’m so conscious. I won’t say that I change because I make sure that I am the same person in here as well as out there.

How does your work differ from others? I try to style people based on their perception of their life and world and not my own. I see a lot of stylists style a person in outrageous wear today, and then tomorrow they have to go back to regular clothes. I feel that you should be able to seamlessly transition after I’m gone. I like to make sure my clients are on point always.

Would you say this is your fundamental calling in life? Its not. There is so much more I want to do. I don’t want to be defined, and I hate being defined. I’m not done, there is too much more that I want to do.

70

BRUTHA MAGAZINE // WINTER ISSUE 2012

Oprah. I love the fact that she is able to empower and enlighten people. By empowering you get the best of them – which is wholly who they are. She isn’t boxed in as just a talk show’s host … she is so many other things.

What would you say is the greatest danger to one’s passion? I try to style people based on their perception of their life and world and not my own. I see a lot of stylists style a person in outrageous wear today, and then tomorrow they have to go back to regular clothes. I feel that you should be able to seamlessly transition after I’m gone. I like to make sure my clients are on point always.

What are your greatest weaknesses as a passionate person? Not seizing the moment. Doubting myself sometimes or allowing a setback to really set me back when I know better. I think for me those are the greatest weaknesses. But day-by-day I work on it. Like it’s okay to get frustrated and be sad, I embrace that, but get over it. The quicker you get over it the quicker you can move into doing better. Everything that happens is a lesson and the lessons help.

Describe your faith and how it has changed your life. My faith is my life. It is what I breathe, who I am. That is how I move. That helps me to not go back so much and keep moving ahead.

What fuels happiness for Kedar Clarke? The people around me: my friends and my family. I get a high out of life, just living. The key is being truly who you are – we all have this built in thing, about what we love to do, what we want to do. Be the unadulterated you.

Any final words for those Bruthas out there seeking passion, faith and happiness?. Do it! Accomplish it, what ever it is. Write it down, whatever you see, and keep going back to it. Write it for this year, not in the next 5 years, but get in the habit of writing it. Pray about it too. Pray for simple things. People see God as only being there to pray when things are tough. Pray for clarity, ask Him where he wants you to be. That would be the best thing, that consistency in terms of writing and praying.

Addis Huyler is, at the core of himself, a man who is truly committed to evolving into the highest and truest expression of himself. He is a true believer in divine order and destiny and has dedicated himself to uncovering that destiny and pursuing it directly with relentless ambition.

Tell us about your family background?

My family is amazing. I was raised in a single family home with my mom, Vernice Smith, until I was 8 years old. She married my step father, Jeff Martin and we relocated to Freeport where we had a pretty traditional family life. My sister Jessica came along a few years later. My mom and step father were always very encouraging and supportive of all of the activities that I became a part of whether that was church, school or track. They nurtured whatever curiosity I had and I think that encouragement and freedom is what instilled such a strong sense of confidence in me that allows me to do some of the things I do today.

When did the urge to start a business first hit?

I don’t recall ever not wanting to be a business owner. I knew always that I wanted to make my own rules and define my own life. It wasn’t until January of 2010 that I really began to define exactly how that was going to happen. That’s really when I began to form the framework of the company that is now SIDDA.

If I was an investor and you had 30 seconds of my time, tell me about your company and what it is that you do?

SIDDA is more than your average marketing consultancy. We recognize that communication is more than just creating pretty images. Instead we want to tell stories with the pieces that we create. Any consumer wants to know that what you are presenting has some meaning to their lives. Whether we are creating a brand for a new company, corporate marketing materials, Original Memory Books or any other type of marketing collateral, our goal is always to find the story that will help the consumer to connect to the message being conveyed, and to tell that story in the most interesting and beautiful way possible. In that way we are able to provide more value for our client’s marketing dollars. 76

What are some of the pressures and/or stresses invo eing an entrepreneur?

It amuses me when persons make the assumption that my life as a CEO is full of social events and parties and exotic travel. The truth is the concept of a weekend; holiday or day off has become a foreign concept to me. My day starts at the office around 7 am, I don’t take lunch breaks, I’m here working until 8-9 pm, I go home and make dinner and prepare to get up and start all over again. That’s on a good day. Perhaps the biggest challenge is that the buck stops with me. There is no opportunity to slack off or decide that I’ve done enough work for my pay grade. I am at the top of the chain of command and there is an incredible amount of responsibility that comes along with that. I’m responsible not only for my staff but indirectly for the well being of their families. Not only that we are, of course, responsible to our clients as well. I take that very seriously.

“I don’t recall ever not wanting to be a business owner. I knew always that I wanted to make my own rules and define my own life.” Why do you think you survived in the marketplace?

I think our success can be attributed to 2 things. The first is my approach to doing business. It is never my goal to have a client walk out of my doors feeling like they’ve gotten less that spectacular service and the highest quality product. My truest intention is to make a connection to the foundational needs of my clients and to not only meet those needs, but also to exceed their expectations. The second factor is that I’ve been VERY deliberate in selecting a team that has a similar approach and a shared vision for the company. What we do takes a higher than normal level of dedication and everyone from my designers to my vendors understand and align themselves with that goal.

Above all, how does Addis/SIDDA differ from the competition?

I try to remain as true to who I am as possible. When I opened SIDDA it was with an organic idea based on my personal experience and expertise. There was never a need to copy someone else’s work or duplicate someone else’s idea. I think those that do are lazy and uninspired bottom feeders who make it more difficult for persons with talent and vision to succeed. SIDDA thrives because we are innovators, we are trend setters and we are leaders in the industry. Our clients recognize that and find value in our intention.

What are your future plans?

There are some exciting plans for SIDDA in 2013. We have developed some interesting new concepts for our existing products as well as an amazing new initiative that is set to impact the way all Bahamians see themselves and also how we measure excellence and achievement in our society. I am grateful for the platform that I have been given. In moving forward I plan to always use it to make a significant contribution to the world in a way that others, hopefully, may find some value.

Do you believe there are sufficient resources available for people to start their own business?

I’m not sure there are. The driving force behind any new venture is capital. If you have the liquid funds available to you then you can float a good idea until it becomes profitable. The reason why so many new businesses fail is because entrepreneurs often run out of money before their idea has a chance to get a solid footing in the market. There are very limited avenues for start ups and small businesses to get funding here. Commercial banks would prefer to give you a $30,000 loan for a car than a $15,000 loan for a business. In many ways I can understand that. However, that leaves few alternatives.

If no, what do you suppose be done to compensate for this? I wish I had the answer. I know the government has a self starter program that provided some funding for new businesses. However, that, from what I understand, is not consistent. I feel that also should have been coupled with some form of financial planning assistance to help the recipients manage the funds given to achieve the maximum return on the investment.

Perhaps there should also be a vehicle that connects entrepreneurs with venture capitalists or smaller investors. There are certainly investors out there that are looking for opportunities. The important thing though is for the entrepreneur to stay true to their vision and to remain vigilant and creative in exploring all avenues to fund their business venture.

It’s hard making that first step, what advice would you give to other aspiring Brutha’s out there?

God will not birth a vision within us and provide the necessary resources for us to manifest that vision. I heard an interesting quote from a movie yesterday that says, “Fear is a product of the thoughts WE create....danger is real...fear is a choice…” Often times when we second guess ourselves or our choices it is because we are not totally convinced of its validity ourselves. So then when we communicate our ideas to others from that point of view, others have doubts as well, which then leads to even more uncertainty and fear for us. The key to making that first step is quite simply believe that you have everything in you that you need to make your vision a reality. It doesn’t mean that it will be easy, or that you will have all the answers. Instead, it means that you know within yourself that you’ve done the research and your idea viable and that you are fully equipped with the tools necessary to see it through. No one can validate that for you...that has to come from within. Fear cannot in any way play a part in that decision. When I was an athlete and I would go into major competitions there was always that heightened sense awareness that there was a lot riding on this particular race. Some may call it fear or nervousness. The same is true when you’re starting a new business or about to make that career changing presentation, or even asking someone out on a first date. How do you make the first step…DO IT AFRAID! It’s that simple. Believe in yourself, believe in your vision, and find confidence in the knowledge that what you have to bring to the table has value. As long as you operate from that center, you will always find your way.

Are you open to your highest potential? “If I create from the heart, nearly everything works; if from the head, almost nothing.” - Marc Chagall

An educated mind is an essential part of being successful today - but more so than that, is an educated heart. Our world praises those with a high IQ as being the smartest people on the planet, but a new standard is emerging - that of Emotional Intelligence (EI). Emotional Intelligence is the ability to identify and create meaning for your own emotions. The power of having a high EI is the power of the Heart. The Heart is never wrong.

82

Let your heart lead! Strengthen your heart not by closing down, but by continuing to open up (even if things didn’t work out the way you wanted), by continuing to be vulnerable (even if you are terrified). The most beautiful life is created the moment you stop judging yourself and let your heart win.

The Heart yearns for connection, for love, for growth and for contribution. The Heart yearns to be of service. The Heart knows that every relationship is a gift containing a seed of knowledge and wisdom for you to learn and grow from. The Heart sees the pain of others and wishes to create a better world that is kinder, united and more compassionate. The power of the human Heart is immeasurable.

The goal of opening your heart is not to GET anything. The goal of opening your heart is to send messages to The Uni-verse telling it “I AM READY FOR LOVE”, “I AM READY FOR JOY”, “I AM READY TO LIVE MY OWN AUTHENTIC LIFE”! This is not about you and another person or you and results. This is about YOU being a stronger and openhearted person. The more open you become, the stronger you get at being open and vulnerable. It’s like a muscle that you must strengthen over and over again.

For your Highest Potential, your best life, your Soul is asking you to combine IQ and Emotional Intelligence. A life of beauty, abundance, fulfillment and joy can only be created when the mind is the servant to the heart. The union of a smart heart and a smart mind creates the best kind of living.

Put the same effort into being open and vulnerable as you do into achieving and see what happens. Moment by moment a new and beautiful world will open to you. Live from your heart and your life will soon be filled with your heart’s desire. This is the promise of Love.
