NOBLE COVENANT. Mayor Vic Paul Salarda (extreme left) and the District Supervisors of DepEdAlabel formally sign the MOA for the implementation of the Zero Collection Policy in all public schools of Alabel, Sarangani Province on October 12, 2016. (Pamela Lopez)

Php 518k local subsidy allotted to ANHS government shall shoulder the PTA expenses previously collected from them. As agreed, P200.00 worth of subsidy will be given to all students who enrolled at any public school of Alabel. The said budget will be allotted to school-related activities. The local government has already polished in their budget the Php 518,000.00 allotment for Alabel National High School in which some portions of the amount has already been used in the school’s program and

participation to competitions. The administration, however, clarified that the Zero Collection Policy does not mean abolishment of the Parent Teachers Associations (PTA) inside every school. He further stressed that the PTA’s duty does not only cover the duty on fees collection but it should also be mindful of planning and decision- making endeavors that help promote learner’s welfare; thus, PTA and LGU’s financial support must co-exist. The said local policy is part

14 out of 20 combined stakeholders and students believed that shifting of classes is a good measure to solve the school’s paucity in classrooms. This was the result of the survey conducted by the Sarangani Tribute, the official publication of Alabel National High School, adjacent to the implementation of the double shifting schedules last June 27, 2016. Mrs. Teresa Leilani Olaybal, a grade 8 teacher said that the shifting of classes is just okay because of the free time in the afternoon. “Of course I am very happy because I have time to practice my women’s basketball squad in the afternoon.”, Mrs. Olaybal said. On the other hand, six out of twenty of the respondents doubted the efficacy of class shifting. Mrs. Divina Damicog, mother of a grade 10 student, is skeptic about the shifting because of the time schedule. “Personally, I don’t like this scheduling because somehow, it is a threat to the safety of my daughter who stays at school up to 8 in the evening,” Mrs. Damicog uttered. Meanwhile, Pretty Amador, a grade 7 student of the school is neither happy nor sad about the budging of schedules. “Though after class I have more time to rest, but waking up early in the morning like 4 or 5am is quite stressful,” Ms. Amador said. The double shifting initiative was facilitated due to the school’s incapability to accommodate the 2, 718 students since the old buildings were demolished to give way for the construction of the four-storey building with 24 classrooms from PAGCOR and DPWH. The survey intends to escort the administration’s steps to address the remarks of the people. (by Rhoda Ebad)

‘A million thanks to you’ – Alumni

“Committing a mistake is not the end of the world for as long as you work and correct that mistake.” These were the words of encouragement given by Dr. Arturo Bayocot, Director of DepEd Region XII, to the participants of the 23rd DepEd Day at KCC Convention Center on August 12, 2016. Bayocot expressed his profound support to the teachers who are always confronting blatant issues questioning their integrity. “Ako po’y naniniwalang walang siraulong teacher who will put his job at stake with just serving in one-day election.” Bayocot uttered. He then proudly said that despite accusations and doubts, teachers are still the creator of another profession. “I tell you, that despite all the skeptics regarding their service, our teachers are still the professionals who creates other professions.” Dr. Arturo further noted that learning from our past is a vital technique to surpass challenges of life. “We should learn from our past. That is the reason why we celebrate the 23rd anniversary of DepEd Sarangani because we were able to survive the challenges of our lives. The regional director is positive that the noble educators are doing their jobs right and just. He challenged the teachers and administrators to bring quality education beyond boundaries through services. “Committing a mistake is not the end of the world for as long as you work and correct that mistake. It is a different story if you continue to repeat the same mistake; you are not learning the lessons.” by Rhoda Ebad

Due to the implementation of the Special Program for Arts (SPA), entrance of Senior High School students and the STVEP Curriculum offerings, ANHS population once again manifested significant increase this year.

Based on the Learners Information System update as of October, 278 students has been added to the previous record of 2315 or 12% from school year 2015-2016 to 2016-2017. In breakdown, Grade 7 reached 705 and 600 in Grade 8 while Grade 9 and Grade 10 reached 487 students and 448 respectively. Moreover, the full blast implementation of the Senior high school had brought 353 senior high school students, completing the 2593 total of populace. Accordingly, from the past five years up to present, there has been a constant change in the population being recorded. From school year 2011-2012, 2171 enrolled at school then increases to 2243 in the succeeding school year 2012-2013. However, this figure dropped to 2195 in school year 2013-2014 mainly because of the existence of the Integrated Schools in Alabel. The increasing trend of student population was back on track as the school approached school year 2015-2016 with 2315 students to SY 2016-2017 with 2593 enrollment turnout. According to Johnrell Revilla, BEIS In-charge of the said school, that the increase of population is due to the existence of the Technical Vocational tracks wherein their skill has been honed in Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Electrical Installation and Maintenance, Dress Making, Commercial Cooking and Beauty care which are in demand locally and internationally. The implementation of SPA and Zero Collection Policy is also the factor of the increase in population. by Rhoda Ebad

School Year 20162017 commenced by implementing the Policy Guidelines on Awards and Recognition for the K to 12 Basic Education Program. During the PTA Meeting in school, many were disappointed especially those students who are actively participating Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA) as they brought the topic regarding the new Policy Guidelines on Ranking Students as stated in the new DepEd order. Deped order no. 36 s, 2016 encompasses several highlights such as: Honors are purely academic based; ECA are not included as part of the criteria in selecting honors; and ECA shall have separate awards. The aforementioned stressing the non-inclusion of ECA in ranking, brought an ire to students

who are actively participating in extracurricular activities. It is as if that the efforts that they have exerted and the passion they have invested to their craft were underrated and devalued. The proponents of the order fail to consider the pressure that these students bear as they prepare and do competitions; more so, their struggle to cope with the lessons that they have compromised in their due participation to contests. Traditionally speaking, people who excel in academic are also the active ones in ECA, meaning these students are responsible enough to balance ECA and academics. Therefore, they deserve incentives such as inclusion of ECA to the ranking process. It is also sad to note that the persistence of the DepEd Order also rouse skeptic teachers to advice students not to join contests anymore, thus, dwindling the enthusiasm and

motivation of the learners. Extra-curricular activities should not be treated simply as just an embellishment and an added expense. These activities help solidify the topics thought in school. The learnings from the four-cornered classroom are made sensible by the ECA since the learners find practical application of the acquired knowledge. There is a popular fact once said by a philosopher saying, “Learning could be best taught if you experience it; for experience is the best teacher.” Thus, if we only concentrate academically, it is impossible for us to put in actions the learning we acquire. Then, ECA is definitely a great tool for the students to experience a kind of learning that will never be forgotten and the victory they acquire from the competition will surely leave pride and legacy to the school.

“Now is the time for the freedom of information to prosper.” A thought that awakens the inner self of every individual who seeks the truth. A voice with an appeal for information that may be an antidote to unlock every details and give light to controversy. The issue of the freedom of information once again rendered the ears of the journalists. The proposed House Bill No.3237 or Freedom of Information bill establishes legal presumption that people should have full access to government information. It enumerates when data must be published online or transmitted to those who are interested “without any necessity demand”. It was described as a good version owing to open its data provisions, including mandatory disclosure cause of budgets

and expenditures; as well as the statement assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN) at government official and employees including the judges. This law would assure clean and honest governance. As we know that freedom of information law is very important, but many, especially those politicians with dubious and filthy motives, tried to impale its immediate passage as a law. In the face of this drawback, as

journalist, how can we support FOI then? Simple, we could use our journalistic skills through informing them the truth and nothing but the truth. As budding writers, we are donned with great part towards communicating with the people, making sense of the reality by not only providing the data but also the thorough analysis. Through our own little ways as a journalist, we can help divulge untold facts behind the government plans, but that must be guided by the ethics because our skills to inform and get information is not absolute. Responsible writing is the key to convince every reader to understand and make a stand; however, be mindful that the writer’s right will end when the rights of the others begin.

Letter to the Editor

Dear editor, We are all aware that the youths of today are getting more violent. Everywhere we can see these so-called “sukaraps.” They are not behaving properly for they always want to get even with somebody whom they are in conflict with. I am concerned regarding the fact that many outsiders have been entering the campus only to cause troubles like punching other students, riots, and chaos; which is a great disturbance and the image of the school itself is stained; and the worst situation is: students are hospitalized. I am hoping that you can enlighten my thoughts and point of views regarding this concern.

The Response

Sincerely yours, Jarr

Dear Jarr, School is the second home of the students and I definitely agree with you that they should at least feel cared and loved in school. As for your concern regarding the outsiders entering and causing troubles in school, the publication assures you that through this paper, the guards in the school will be able to work their tasks actively so as not to let outsiders distract and inflict harm to the students again. Moreover, as per information from the administration, the management under the headship of Sir Gindap with the School Governing Council had already made measures by requesting for police aid inside the campus. I hope I have enlightened your mind and thank you for being concerned and continue to soar high. The Editor

Distressed. Perturbed. Importuned. These are the feelings that surfaced the hearts of the employees regarding the system of Labor Contractualization or endo. During the fiery campaign period, one of the biggest topics that got a lot of attention was the issue on contractualization of labor. It could be perceived that majority of the candidates are not in favor of this action here in the Philippines. Even though we already have elected our new president, the said issue tackled during campaign period still lingers on the mind of the citizens especially those who hold on to the promise that change is coming. End of contract or “endo” is the colloquial term for contractualization. It is an illegal hiring system which denies workers of regular employment. By terminating the employees before they even reach their sixth month, which is the maximum length stipulated by

the Labor Code of Philippines, they can avoid regularizing employees and deprive them of benefits that come with being a regular employee, such as paid leaves, bonuses, overtime, membership contributions, health insurance coverage, and the like. According to a survey, 56 percent of the country's 37.6 million employed persons are either employed in contractual, temporary, probationary, seasonal and odd jobs. If ENDO will be extinguished from our business systems, we will be stopping the divorce-like culture and cycle of ending and seeking for another job. Employees could enjoy the benefits of being regular and being cared of by their loyal employers. Perhaps, we may say that the number of job seekers who are gone tired of searching for job vacancy and settles to do livelihood in defiance with the law will be restrained from doing so because ENDO is no longer in effect.

Moreover, companies’ investments on training and developing its people are maximized as they capitalize on employees’ loyalty and retention; and issues on security of trade information and business insights can be better addressed as there would be lesser staff turn-over. Therefore, contractualization, endo, 555, or whatever term they use, it must be destroyed because it will bring harm to the citizens of this republic especially the fresh graduates who are commonly victimized by this lame system. Contractualization is obviously a big advantage to the employers but we should come up with a win-win solution for every Filipino with regards to this endo scheme. As they say, “a successful citizen indicates a progressive country.” Thus we need to help each other if we really want change to happen.

Change from within: a cliche for the coming change “I don’t care if I burn in hell as long as the people I serve live in paradise.” This was quoted from President Duterte during an interview when he was asked about the essence of leadership. He mainly focuses in suppressing drug addiction thus the Philippine National Police are exhausting all efforts to campaign support for this aim. However, some local government officials are uncooperative serving as hurdles in implementing an intensified campaign against illegal drugs. Without the support of the Filipino citizens, a plan as good as this won’t work out. No matter how President Duterte encourages everyone to quash drug usage, when we don’t respond positively, nothing will change. As they say commendable leader needs a docile follower. According to the news submitted by the PNP to the lawmakers, there are 144,202 included in the Drugs Watchlist, 686,896 surrenderees, 15098 arrestees, and 1,029 were killed. Concurrently, the index crime rate dwindled by 31% Before, criminals don’t die but

PERSPECTIVE ABYGYLE B. DIZON

innocents do. Now, criminals die and innocents live. It could be perceived that the reciprocal happened and it as if favoring the innocent civilians and making our streets safer, hence, perhaps justifies the end and maybe a win-win solution for us. “Never did we feel leadership no less than from the President,” said Dir. Benjamin Magalong. It only affirms how huge the support of our President is. When we participate in this program by giving our full underpinnings, we can inspire and enhearten everybody especially the PNP and AFP who are chasing these criminals. As wonderful as it may seem for others, this measure still invites critics who absurdly care and say they protect human right and are against of these killings. This notion is comprehensible and at some point logical. One must not close the door of second chance even for those who are deemed as the worst criminals. We still need to preserves the sanctity of life.

More so, these killings aired on television and the good publicity about it may condition the minds of our young ones that killing for so long as the person is bad is just okay. This is terribly wrong. Really wrong. The challenge now is on how to pressure and eradicate drugs without inflicting violence as a counter measure. One good suggestion perhaps is the apprehension of drug offenders and subjecting them to rehabilitation. But this would cost us billions. The cheaper and very ideal move that we can do so far is to direct and nurture ourselves to become good citizens of the country; abstinence to illegal drug use and a friendly advice to those who are already engaged with it would also do. This might be a long, implausible and hard process but way better and humane than immediately exterminating lives. Remember that our long wait for change will never take place not unless we do our responsibilities as Filipinos to take part for what we are longing. A mango won’t fall just by simply looking at it. It needs a reaper. Hence, change entails actions- just the right one.

Of goodbye and welcome: A Phil, Chin and US opera

“Change is coming.” This was the battle cry that has resonated all throughout the country with Mr. Rodrigo Roa Duterte, assuming the office of the presidency. Change has indeed come: change in the way we view politics nowadays, change on how we approach and solve crimes, change in how we deliver ourselves in public, and even greater change in establishing and searching for alliance. In his recent visit in China, President Rodrigo Duterte vocally declared his intention to separate from the United States of America in terms of foreign policy. It is as if the president is trying to imply that the Philippines could run as an independent country without the help and criticisms of a long-time ally and embrace China and soon Russia in his list of new alliances. These statements of the President got the ears and attention of United States of America and Japan, and an ire from our fellow men who have been victimized by Chinese coastguards

INSPECTION ABYGYLE B. DIZON

in their attempt to earn a living in the conflicted territory. They were roused to get explanation from the president. America has been our long-time ally and a constant provider of aids to the country when catastrophe arises. To think that we are now in the verge of cutting ties with them is hard to fathom since we constantly rely on them. However, now is also the right time to try and practice our sovereignty independent to the dictates of the foreigner who have once in our history put us to bondage. With their influence to us in our modern days, the concept of American colonialism is still enveloping in our country in terms of the economic trends they set. On the other hand, to make friends with China and establish a formidable alliance with them is not a totally bad idea. Though we are confronting issues with them in form of territory,

talking with them in a friendly manner would ease tension and pave way on how to arrive with a solution where all parties will benefit. Our president’s visit to China seemingly proved this notion bringing with him a hefty billion of donations and business opportunities from China to our fellow men who are craving for employment. As to history, our relationship with this yellow race can be traced back to our barter system long before the Americans and Spanish came to colonize the country. In this light, there is somewhat a clear affirmation that the two countries had and should have good relationship in the first place. As they say, “the better person who can understand you is the one who is near in proximity to you.” Hence, China. To put an end to the friendship fostered with an old mate is an unperceivable idea because admit it or not, we could find traces of them in our bloodlines but this should not also mean that we would not welcome another friend request especially for those who are near to us.

Ethnic raves, hops and alluring colorful costumes that were long gone had been revivified to bring revelry in the most anticipated event in Alabel. For almost ten long years of waiting, Alabelian’s thirst for enthusiastic moves and nostalgic cultural melodies was quenched as the local

government unit revived the Street Dancing Competition as one of the highlights and attractions of the annual Kasadyaan Festival. Street dancing’s last appearance in roster of events in the Kasadyaan could be traced way back 2007. As per record, Kawas National High School was the last hailed champion after its historic grand slam run since 2005. After this, street dancing competition was whited out and had never crossed the eyes of the spectators ever since. September 10, 2016, the municipal ground of Alabel became a harbor of graceful

dance moves and attentiongetting music as the street dancing hopefuls paraded their captivating get-ups and props and displayed their unique and clap-worthy performances during the 2016 Kasadayaan Festival celebration. With their shiny blue costumes, five contenders from General Santos City which include General Santos Secondary School of Arts and TradesMain Campus (GSSSAT), Pedro Acharon Sr. Central Elementary School (PACES), Lagao National High School (LNHS) at Fatima National High School (FNHS) boasted and featured the value of tuna industry as part of their daily living in their presentation. GSSATAnnex wowed the crowd with their beautiful narration of Kalton Festival through dancing. At the conclusion of

the event, Pedro Acharon Central Elementary School bagged the championship title with P 100,000.00 cash prize. GSSAT-Annex trailed at 2nd place with P 80,000.00 and Lagao National High school at sweet 3rd spot with P 60, 000.00 cash prize. Municipal Councilor Joel Aton was impressed as to how the street dancing competition was able to bring merriment to the spectators and promised that this event will be a regular fixture in the events of the Kasadyaan Festival. “Sa lahat ng saya at ligayang hatid nito, hindi maitatangging ang sayaw na ito ay isang sining na nakakapagbigay ng ligaya. Sa lahat ng ‘Ohhh’ at ‘Ahhh’ na kalakip nito – ang Streetdancing bilang isang kompetisyon at kasiyahan… ay siguradong matatanaw sa bawat pagdaos ng Kasadyaan Festival,” Hon. Joel Aton, said.

Splendid Man in Blue by SALBAME,LOUIE GRACE P.

Policemen are corrupt. They are womanizers. They are ill-bred. They are lazy, drug-protectors and mad dogs. But no…not all. One man from Alabel has defied this notion. SPO4 Ezrael Domingo Lantingan one of the respected cops in the municipality was hailed by Malacanang as one of the Country’s Outstanding Police in Service (COPS) last September 5 at Metrobank Plaza, Makati City. Time Prevention. Time Solution. Community Participation. These facets enabled Mr. Lantingan to convince the panelists that he’s worth the reward. His stronghold community presence and concern propelled his excellence not only as a public servant but as a community member in general. In fact, he orchestrated the construction of the chapel located at Sitio Libertad, Alabel, Sarangani Province despite that he belonged to other denomination. Honored. “For more than 160,000 police in the Philippines, only 10 were chosen. Fortunately, I’m one of them. It’s the first time that one of the awardees came from Sarangani and it’s a challenge for me to strive hard.” He said. Being awarded is not a Greek chore for SPO4 Lantngan. Actually, his latest accolade is just an offset of numerous awards he had garnered in the past. His Outstanding Police recognition is proceeded by a Best Investigator Award in the region for two successive years (2014-2015). Adding to his long list of award is the elusive Sandatahang Lakas ng Pilipinas Command Plaque which is given to a man in uniform who had contribute greatly in the resolution of problems. The armed forces of the Philippines recognized his contribution to internal peace and security through legal cooperation by actively joining organized platoon, 1002 BDE, 101 ID for indigenous people’s peace and development and outreach program and served as the chief of the Investigation Non-Commissioned Office of Alabel. Moreover, he has also coordinated with the 4th 2nd and 10th Infantry Division in the conduct of Legal Cooperation seminar to enhance the military knowledge and skills in handling legal matters which resulted to 17 cases against CNN (lefties) members within the brigades. On November 7 of this year, another feather to his colorful cap will be embellished by a yet another notable recognition the “Distinctive Immortal

Legacy Award” from the Christian and Muslim-achievers’ guild which will be donned on him at Bayview Park, Roxas Boulevard, Manila. At your service. Another unique information about Mr. Lantingan is his indigenous people’s background. For others, being a member of a native tribe such as the “B’laan” is something that they would kept confidential because of the fear to be mocked at. But for our protagonist, this is something that one should be proud of, for the name of the Tribe will be respected. In service, tribal affiliation is not an issue at all. As long as he knows that everyone, especially his fellow IP’s at the far-flung areas need him, he is ready to serve. This made him a hallmark for his tribe. Mr. Lantingan is not just a police who always wears his uniform but also a good father to his 4 beautiful and handsome children, a loving husband to his adorable wife and a nice son to his parents. According to him, they are the reasons why he’s working so hard and that he will not force his son and daughters to follow his profession as long as they will graduate college and be successful persons someday.” aim high and hit the mark!” Mr. Lantingan quoted. TRAVEL CHILDHOOD back to

JOURNEY Photo taken by Celesty Guatlo

Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep!

I can still hear the loud noise of buses coming and leaving the terminal. Buses that bring people to their destinations. The bus that delivers me back to my childhood. “Tacurong! Tacurong! Nonstop! Air conditioned!”

As stepped inside this big, four-wheeled vehicle, memories started to flash in my mind. An image of a father wearing ripped loose jeans and a shirt from a politician given to him last election started to appear. He is waving at a chubby girl beside me. She is smiling yet teary-eyed while waving back at her father. I somewhat understood the tears in her eyes. Tears of pure longing for she will be away from her father for the entire vacation. Ting! The images suddenly disappeared. I started walking to look for a seat for two. As I sat, I saw the chubby girl sitting at a seat for three just right beside mine. She is with her mon and a boy younger than her who I bet is her brother. I can see the girl’s sad reflection as she keeps on looking outside,

not taking her father off her sight. Beep! Beep! Those two horns indicate that we are leaving. Engine’s ignited. Wheels begun to turn. The sad reflection of a girl turned painful. As the bus started to move away, leaving her father who keeps on smiling: saying that the girl has nothing to worry about him because he’s fine and they will meet again after the vacation. Tears started to flow down her cheeks but she chose to close her eyes, asking God to give them a safe trip and to guide her beloved father. I can see the endless road we are taking. Vehicles are going through and against our direction. I took another glance to the chubby girl. I smiled upon seeing her reflection from the windows beside her. A small yet innocent smile started to form on her lips. She probably enjoys the random views outside the window. I also enjoyed the view of her smiling. Chik, chik, chik! A guy wearing a white uniform, holding the tickets and a puncher stopped beside me. He punched the ticket then left. I felt the bus is going up and down. I looked outside to see the road looks like hills. So that’s why I felt nervous. I was about to close my eyes as my way to forget the tension, when I saw the little girl’s reflection. She is closing her eyes badly. Assumingly because she is afraid of the road. My fright unexpectedly vanished with what I saw.

Kring! Kring! I checked my phone to read the message I just received. “Your uncle is at the terminal. We are waiting for you.” It was from my nanay- my grandmother and they can’t wait to see me. “Really mang? Nanay texted you that I can’t wait! Are we near?” said the little girl. She seemed to be happy. She begun to tell stories with her bother about the things that they will do when they got there. I can say that their plans are fun and exciting. Tick, tock. Tick, tock. Time passed, the bus finally stopped. I grabbed my things then went out. There I saw my uncle, smiling silly which made me laugh a little. We rode his tricycle and drove to my nanay’s place. Hectares of sugarcane farm, mascuvado factory, carabaos that pull their carts, and people with bright smiles. I am really back here at Tacurong. The place where I used to spend my vacation. The place that gives me extraordinary experiences. The tricycle stopped in front of a house. I stepped out stood straight. Then I saw the chubby girl doing the same thing as mine. I smiled at myself. “We are back.” I said to myself. The image then disappeared. As I roamed my sight around. “That crying, chubby, little girl changed a lot right? Well, it’s been a while. Nice being with you again Tacurong.”

Settling Disputes in Blaan’s Fashion UkumiBlaan Blaan’s Judicial System Report by Feblits Sollano

The Blaans are the most storied ethnic group in the town and perceived to have been one of the early settlers in southern Mindanao. The group is dominantly residing here in the municipality of Alabel and they are famous for their brassworks, beadwork and tabih weave. The people of these tribes wear colorful embroidered native costumes and beadwork accessories. Wonder how our tribesmen in Alabel settle their dispute?

Unique as they are, the tribe has its own traditional judicial system and “skalut” is a part of it. In skalut, the accused will be allowed to deliver his/her side. The fulung would first try to settle the dispute, but if the accused insists that he/she is not guilty, they will perform a procedure called skalut. The procedure for skalut: 1. Get a kulang tana (pot). Put a y-shape tree branch called “tnireng” and water inside the pot. 2. Bring the water to boil. Once the water is boiling, the elder will summon the spirits who owns the land, fire and wood. 3. The accused will be asked to put his hand in the boiling water. If his skin gets burnt or inflamed, it means he is guilty; if not, he will demand for indemnity from the accuser. This is how disputes are settled in the unique tribe of the B’laans. So if you come accross a pot and Y- shape branch, think that they narrate a judicial story. (Source: Sarang-ini Page 10)

EXPERIENCE

What will you feel if surprises come your way unexpectedly? Naturally, you will be shocked and amazed and awe with wonder as to the reality of the situation. Fresh from our tiresome escapades, nothing was left in my mind on our way to Manila that night but to reach the haven of Twilight Jabines who heartily offered it to us temporarily for us to stay. Not because I wanted to rest and be refreshed from our many sleepless night, but the truth was, I was very excited with our scheduled date , the following day at Tagaytay with Alvin Gamat. “Tagatay?” I said to myself. “ At least I can visit you.” O thought it’s only through the lectures in my class when the topic is all about volcanoes that I was ab’le to familiarize its features, but now I said, “I will see you Tagaytay.” “But, how is Alvin Gamat now?” I asked myself. “Is he the same Alvin Gamat I knew before, very humble, quite and smart student, who graduated with honors in high school and a Cum Laude in his Accountancy course in college. Has success change him since I heard he hold a big position in one of the department in Central Bank?” These questions keep on ringing on my mind. Morning came, we took a bath early. All of us were very excited. Who will not be excited if somebody will treat you for a lunch at Tagaytay? Ten o’clock he came driving his own car “ Is this your car Alvin?” We really asked. Yes, physically there were changes on him, but he was still the same Alvin. Humble and quite. Thus, my question was answered. Success did not change him. In spite of having almost toured Europe countries, like Germany, Switzerland and the rest I cannot remember it anymore because as he said, he was always the one send by his boss for any seminars by the Central Bank. At last we arrived at Tagaytay. I cannot believed that in reality, I saw Taal Volcano and Taal Lake. I said to myself “I thought, hanggang post card and pictures lang kita makikita, but now here I am enjoying your beauty Tagaytay.” Food were served and we enjoyed eating while singers draw near to us, to our table and sang for us. After the meal, Alvin invited us to visit his condominium unit. “At last”, I said, “I can see what is really inside a condominium.” There inside were many spacious parking areas and garage, big swimming pool, basketball court and a playground. “Ah, so this is what a condo looks like.” I said. We rode on an elevator to get inside the condo

A Treat to Remember

Brand New Start

An account of an ANHS Teacher truned Principal

By Louie Grace Salbame

Change is Coming. This line had become a nationwide emblem since the seat of the head of the government was finally assumed. But for Pag-Asa Integrated School, this seemed to be a frightful news. A new administration characterized by prime strictness got their attention. New. For the very first time, the students cradled by this institution tried out their new brown and red-shaded uniforms coupled with their shinny inexpensive ukay-ukay –branded shoes which could be bought for ten pesos. The strict enforcement of the prescribed hair cut brought out some elegance and decency in the visage of the Pag-Asa IS learners which is now at par with those students who enjoyed the learning atmosphere in the lowland. Learning and even the lifestyle of the learners had indeed changed. Before, the students enjoyed the luxury of being late and could afford to go home early, for the class session starts at nine and ends at three. This practice was indeed not healthy, and the ideal optimum learning though maximizing the instructional time was compromised. Now, everything turned 360 degrees drastically. With the new school head imposing thoroughgoing administrative power, no one from the students even from the teachers should be complaisant about learning time. Classes shall start at 7:20 am and shall end 5:00 pm. Everyone, from that day on, obeyed. Changed. Every day, down she comes as if carrying out the duty of a security guard; scrutinizing each and every student’s identification cards, checking the completeness of the uniform from the head down to the footwear (black shoes), and sending errant students back to their homes which is more or less a kilometer away from the school. Yes, this is her early morning chore. A chore which she believed could transform students’ fossilized and inappropriate practice.

-for few hours and at last time to go home. On the way to Twilight condo, Alvin still managed to tour us around Manila. It was indeed a very wholesome date. Before going to sleep that night, I recall one by one the blessings we received from our beloved students during our trip. First, from Ronilo Jabilles who treated us for a merienda at Jollibee, Pangasinan on our way to Loag. Second from Twilight Jabines who gave us shelter coupled with a hearty breakfast on our first night in Manila, and third from, Alvin Gamat. I said, “These individuals are successful in their career, because they remain humble, never allowed success to spoil them. Marunong silang lumingon sa kanilang pinanggalingan.” To you Ronilo, Twilight and Alvin, keep on going… Accept my thanks and gratitude for all the kindness we received from you. For my retiring years, I now I will never forget, that once in my life, you touched my heart with the treatment I received. For indeed to me it was… “A treat worth remembering…” I remain your humble teacher, Melodwena P. Matillano.

Had Changed. Later, she realized that the wayward behavior of the students is not because of their being errant but because of the strong child laboring trend in the place. Students compromised their studies to engage in back-breaking jobs consuming their weakly funded bodies just to help their parents bring food on their tables. The budding principal sighed and resolved that this trend should end. Not too long ago after her introspection, help came. With her strong community influence and wide linkaging horizon, she was able to magnetize the Local Government Unit to sponsor a feeding program which addressed health issues, the Department of Labor and Employment to subsidize monetary aid to Parents at Risk of Dropping-out (PARDO’S) which reduced the number of cases of child labor in the place, and the GenTuna to shoulder free tuna canned goods to students every week. Life in the barangay had changed and she could never be as contended as seeing these learners travers the path towards their dream together with her. Shall Change. Ma’am Marivic Esteva Lomocso is the name; the new principal who gives premium to strictness with a heart; a high-caliber teacher from Alabel National High School whose legacy radiated from the plains to the hills. “I could never be less thankful to my previous school for preparing me for this wonderful mission.” Principal Lomocso said as she led her eyes on the skyline where the mountains that fortress Pag-asa are fixed as if saying “May pag-asa ang Pag-Asa”.

A Crying Fist

Draco’s Twin Sister By LOUIE GRACE P. SALBAME

Behold…she’s coming. Ferocious eyes attached on her fierce face. Reeky nose as if breathing out fire. I’m walking at the corridor when I heard a harsh voice ranting. “What’s that?! Is that what I’ve taught you?! You Give me 5 rounds and 10 push-ups!” she said in a loud and gnawing voice. Then, I saw a little girl soaked with sweat running around the wide rectangular court under the warm smiling sun. Afterwards, she laid down facing the ground, hands touching the hard soil, counting from 1 to 10 while bouncing up and down. Her serpent screams are regularly there. Well, I think she’s used to it ---I mean everyone around her. It seemed like no quiet time for them I guess? It’s the final game. Crowds all over. Time is slowly expiring. I saw girls playing with numbers indicated at the back of their jerseys. One was holding a big orange ball. Then, someone caught my attention. It’s her, the other half of him (Draco). Standing near the court, wearing red polo-shirt. Fiercely looking at the girl who is setting up a ball play. Her veins are going to explode anytime. Suddenly, I heard a shrill sound. Finally done. Her team won. Her girls were happy with the victory they’ve got. Her? No comment but a squint face. “Ning! If I see you laughing during the game again, you’re dead.” She said in a threatening voice. As if she’ll eat her. She always wanted them to focus on their sport. She’s a person who will not accept anything less than perfection. She’s very strict. An English speaking dragon. “Agay! Akung tiil nagcrump!” a girl with number 01 behind shouted in between of her crying face sitting on the ground. Teresa Leilani M. Olaybal immediately ran towards the girl. She (Teresa) held her (the girl’s) hand and left foot. Then, she asked if it is still aching. A concern look flashed on her eyes. I realized while looking at her, a monster can be tamed. A wicked person has a good side.

“Change is coming.” A simple statement but as fierce as his fist. A fist that exploded like a bomb. A fist that turned something into everything that no one, but him, understands. I had a dream last night. People of the Philippines had shouted out their voices in choosing the next president. The throne has been handed from a calm descendant to norm-defying heir. Change had finally come. With his muscular fist, war against drugs started. Philippine National Police led by General Bato Dela Rosa brought the president’s fist in destroying illegal drug’s reign. Users even innocents were dispatched. His fist roamed around the nation which made his people feel the intensity of his administration’s straightforwardness. Some were supporting him, some were against, but it didn’t stop him. His fist is just more powerful than what other think. His decisions are barely understood. Many think it is no measures at all. Many issues came out that seem to destroy the government even more. He never thought of anything aside from his people’s sake. Many branch of the government had been affected by his visions, both negative and positive. The whole nation reacted upon hearing his actions in news. His words… His words are literally hard. He can’t say a statement without dirty words. He will say everything

Pag-asa. A place in the mountains of Alabel which is slowly making its pressence felt as one of the beautiul places in Sarangani where one can observe the grandeur of the plains below. Here, houses are few and the air tickles everybody’s nose with freshness. Step over step. The sun is above us. Its glaring rays caress our skin. I took the first step of our journey. That single step was followed by a dozen, a hundred and thousand more steps. Wearing slippers, We hiked up the mountains with smiles on our faces and desire to see the place. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. As time went by, the sun extended its rays more that it pierced our skin. Burning temperature gradually consumed our bodies. The long road seems not to stop swirling and the tail of the road was still out of our vision. Oasis, where art thou? I thought of a common seen I saw in the movies. When the characters are in the middle of the dessert walking and hallucinating. Tree shades along the asphalted road are very seldom to find for

they are guarded by thorny fences, then I saw one. I halted staying under its hospitable shade. My lips started to dry up, my mouth ran out of saliva. Heavy gasping started to resonate and exhaustion begun to overcome me. Bundak ulan! I cried for the rain to fall. It’s my fault that I didn’t bring any water with me. Every vehicle passing seemed to be hope- running hastily without looking back at me. With too much heat and exhaustion, I continued walking. While persevering, a thought crossed my mind. Life. Each step became harder to take. Something is pulling me back every forward steps that I do. “Life is like this. It’s hard and many will pull you down. We just have to carry our feet to make a step.” I smiled at that idea. Last spiral run… As I got nearer and nearer, it became harder to push myself more but finally, I finished the last round. I took my last step… Amazing… The breath taking view welcomed my eyes. The breeze of air replaced the

touch of the scorching sun. Peace comforted my mind and tiredness smoothly faded. Everything was small and I felt like I was on the top of everything. There are wide green fields that are really inviting. Everything was on their place. The hardships were all worth it. I turned a little bit and saw the spiral road I hurdled. The struggles I had while taking the road were unloaded. All I can see was the road. I found refuge in that mystical place. When the sun was almost kissing the horizon, our pack decided to bid farewell to the oasis which cradled us. On our way down, I looked at the mountains far from me. The mountain I once trekked. The mountains where noise is soundless. I lead my eyes down and saw my feet on flat ground not on a bumpy ascending road. I am now at the plain where I belong. I am now one of those invisible things when people up the mountains watch the plain. I stepped up on plat form facing the mountains and shouted “Pag-asa, thank you for letting me try how it feels to be on top. I will bring and hope that I’ll be like you one day.” Then I whispered “Pag-asa- the place in the mountains of Sarangani which stays on top no matter how hard the road is.” CHRISTINE DELA ROSA SERANO

to you regardless of how you would feel about it. Threatening someone’s life seems to be just like saying good morning to someone. His words spread like wild fire across the world. Even the relationship of our country with USA and UN were at stake. To that point, many seem to go against the flow of his leadership. I-I… I… I can’t believe my eyes. Is this really happening? I suddenly heard someone’s sobs. I turned back and I saw a guy wearing a checkered polo, kneeling, crying in front of a tomb. I saw the fist in his eyes covering and wiping his tears away yet still flowing down. “Nay, tabangi ko Nay.” I heard him saying, pleading and asking for help from his hero, his mother. I can hear not just sobs but also longing and love. This fist is just so different from what I saw earlier, from what everyone sees. This fist is not the strong one, it is fragile and soft. “People of the Philippines had shouted out their voices in choosing the next president. This had been handed from Mr. Benigno to president Rodrigo.” The anchor’s voice brought me back to my senses. I stood up and there I saw a footage of the guy in my dream, standing in front of podium. He raises the hand and then I saw the fist that flashed in my dreams. He begun to open it and said “I am Rodrigo Duterte, I love my country, Philippines, this is the land of my home and land and the land of my people.”

Eat the Street For those who have been away from Alabel for quite some time, by the moment you pass by Lalisan Street, an aroma of street foods will welcome you to a delectable night. Through a local ordinance, on September, the street was converted from an ordinary path to a nightly attraction which features street foods popular in the municipality. At the entrance of the night market, a festival of crunchy fried gizzards, helmet (chicken head), addidas (chicken feet) and chicken skin, will surely tickle the bellies of the night goers. Health conscious folks will surely forget their diets when they encounter the mouthwatering combo of fish tempura and kwek kwek which are best complemented

by a thirst-quenching melon gulaman refreshment. For those who are not satisfied with light snacks, stalls of grilled foods and barbeques and lechon manok (roasted chiken) will sure make you burp upon sight. If you are in search of a cure for weakening knees, at the end most corner lingers the warm ballots (broiled unhatched duck embryo) which by local belief would figuratively energize the cartilages of your body. These are just but flicker of the sights that decorates Alabel’s own version of the night market. So, the next time we would bump against each other in Lalisan street, don’t forget to spare me some snacks. See you. by Christine Serrano

Fortress against

Marijuana: Remedy or Detriment?

“Is marijuana a cure or an excuse?” This is a common question asked by many with regards to the use of marijuana in the country. Just recently, a well-known celebrity – Mark Anthony Fernandez is cramped in prison cell due to alleged possession of a kilo of marijuana. Fernandez claimed that he only uses marijuana as medication to prevent cancer and that the marijuana confiscated from him is his one-year supply. According to a study conducted by National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), we can obtain a number of benefits from some marijuana chemical like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Such benefits are characterized by the control of epileptic seizures, pain and inflammation, nausea, and increase appetite in patients with extreme weight loss caused by AIDS. Thus, the FDA approved two drugs – dronabinol and nabilone, in pill form which actually contains THC. However, it is not stated that marijuana itself when smoked gives a really good health advantage. In fact, some of its chemical contents are extremely powerful and will lead to serious health effects when abused. Therefore, the risks associated with its use, outweighs the benefit we can obtain from it. Nevertheless, we can say that marijuana is neither a remedy nor a cure. It is just a lame excuse by a marijuana user that will bring detriment in life. God has given us extraordinary intelligence for us to use it in this world. Sure thing that the scientists will be able to discover more medicines that will not put us to a perilous situation.

Timid. Alarmed. Fearful. These feeling overwhelmed the hearts of the human race just when a virus named “Zika” burst in all continents. This virus is known to be communicable and cannot be prevented or healed by medicines and vaccines yet. Zika is spread by daytime Aedes mosquitoes. These are black mosquitoes with white dots. Since it was first isolated at the Zika Forest of Uganda, they named the virus after it. While this dangerous phenomenon is floating in the surface, we need to be extra cautious with our movements, especially that it can be transmitted through sexual contact, blood transfusion, and pregnancy where it can cause microcephaly and other birth defects to the child. According to surveys, Brazil is by far the most affected country reporting he most number of cases of people infected with Zika virus. 1,700 confirmed cases of Zika-related microcephaly in newborns were reported. Moreover, there were over 1,400 cases of Zika Virus

infections reported in the U.S. Inclusive to that were 400 pregnant women with laboratory evidences of a possible infection. This situation present in our world today could be something we can call as a great dilemma run by Black and White Monsters – the Aedes mosquitoes. From this scenario, we can perceive that even small things can cause extreme damages. For the time being, since they are still developing medications to be used, considering safety measures are the best solution at this juncture. Therefore, what we need to do is to take necessary precautions and ensure not to get bitten by mosquitoes because we never know what breed of monster is already sucking our blood. Such precautions are characterized by using insect repellent, wearing clothes that can cover your arms, legs and feet, and stay in places that have air-conditioning or in places using window and door screens. As they say, “Prevention is always better than cure.”

(by BOR) To employ new strategies in resolving school`s issues and problems within the teacher’s control, 5 mentors of Alabel National High School (ANHS) attended a Continuous Improvement Project seminar held at London Beach resort, General Santos City on August 15, 2016. ANHS’ representatives were identified as Marni Basit, Rolicel Tribunalo, Edilberto Pantaleon, Ginalyn Villaflores and Bryll Regidor. The Seminar includes several workshops which highlights application of Continuous Improvement Technology’s step-bystep approach to school burdens referred to as Triple A which stands for Assess, Analyze and Act. The School Improvement Project learning guide specifies that to realize success in solving a problem, it is important first to identify what the problem is and understand truly what the problem is all about; thus the very sense of Assess stage. On the other hand, In analyze stage, a researcher will be able to gain better understanding of why the problem occurs for its root causes through tools such as the Fishbone Diagram and Root Cause Analysis. You will be aware of the

need to validate the root causes of the need to problem by collecting data from learners and other stakeholders. Meanwhile, in Act, one will be able to pilot the solutions, review thoughts and then roll-out to the effectiveness of the solutions. Alabel Continuous Improvement team dubbed as ANHS DEBUGGERS, will be banking on its project, Enhance Enrollment Mechanism which will help ease school’s problem in enrollment procedures. According to Mr. Regidor, “the project targets to lessen the difficulties of enrollment procedures through school-based offline learner information wherein enrolment will be done in a paper less and ICT aided manner.” The CIP is the brainchild of Australian Aid and B.E.S.T. Unwanted Malady

Unwanted Malady “It’s been a long day, Without you my friend. And I tell you all about it, When I see you again.”

Every time I hear this song “Till I see you again”, it’s like someone is squeezing my heart. With this song, I recall the memories of my beloved friend. A friend who have gone to soon. I’ve lost the person that I’ve cherish most. A week before, I was busy preparing for a surprise birthday party for her. I’ve prepared all the food, drinks, venue, and invitations. I’ve done all of these things because she’s important to me like a sister. We have common things that we both love. When one of

us is hurt, we took care of each other. We promised that our friendship will last till the end. Everything seemed to be perfect, but one day, we were doomed. I thought she will be surprised with the party I secretly organized for her, but fate tricked me that I found myself being surprised with succeeding event. I saw her cry. Her eyes turned red. Small rashes slowly showing up. I can’t bear see her faint so, we immediately rushed her to the hospital. The doctor said, she’s been infected by dengue. It is caused by a virus transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitos. It cannot be prevented of any medication and vaccines if it is already severe. In that moment,

I’m afraid that it will harm her. Because of this virus, severe brain malformation appeared. I went near to her, she was crying while saying, “Sorry, I broke our promise.” “It’s been a long day, Without you my friend. And I’ll tell you all about it, When I see you again, When I see you again.” It’s been five years since she’s gone. I know that she’s happy in heaven. I’ll promise you that I will take care of myself. I will be strong and healthy for you. You know how much I miss you and love you. It’s been a long day since your gone, because of that unwanted malady. by Phoebe Kate Bacus

Rabid Rage

Bitten. Enraged. Paled. Dead These are more likely the unfortunate fate of a person who is bitten by a rabid animal. Rabies is a fatal infectious disease caused by a virus of the genus Lyssavirus that if transmitted through bite would result to immediate inflammation of the brain and fatality. According to Rosana Unajan, Municipal Sanitary Inspector of Alabel Municipal Health Center, 360 animal bite cases were recorded in Alabel from June 2015 to January 2016. Two of these cases resulted to deaths and nine more are found to have been exposed to the disease but were already immunized upon detection. Most of these cases were concentrated in Barangay Alegria. Nerissa Mendoza, the Maternal, Newborn, Child Health and Nutrition (MNCHN) Coordinator explained that the recorded rabies mortalities were due to lack of knowledge and false perception of the people. She further said that if one is bitten by a dog or any animal, injected or not injected, one must perform first aid and subject him or self for medication in nearby health centers. She also warned that the traditional practice of “tandok” is very dangerous specially to the person doing it. She also added that the rubbing of garlic to the bitten part of the body has no scientific basis and that the performance of it would only aggravate laceration of the wound which would widen entry of the virus. The Municipal Health Office of Alabel suggests this simple first aid tips against rabies: Wash the site of exposure with soap and rinse thoroughly with water. After washing, go immediately to the clinic and be immunized. by Phoebe Kate Bacus

Missing: Kluffy. Stated in the last piece of paper I just pasted in a lamp post of the nearby Barangay hoping that someone who has a good-heart will return her back. Today`s the second day of our operation to look for the family`s only pup, but we still don`t have any lead to where she is. Fluffy. Shaggy. Lovely. That`s our ever so cute, Kluffy, a Chao-chao. September 24 last year was the most precious day for me because it was the day my baby whelp arrived in my life. She was one of the presents I received after having an excellent academic grades in our School. She has short legs, not-toolong-but-isn`t-too-short twiddling tail, and a thick hair that could make you want to crumple her as if she`s a teddy bear. Due to her white, curly, thick hair it`s kind of hard to locate her eyes, nose and lips are. However, when you found her peeping beautiful sparkling eyes, it could make you admire her cuteness more. A day before she was lost, heavy rain continuously poured from above, I carried her and sat on the couch. It was her most favourite spot when it`s cold— our house`s entertainment room. I turned the television on and watched my beloved KDrama entitled Oh My Venus when she slowly leaned on me. A smile plastered on my lips as a thought hit me, “I am such a lucky gal to have a sweet baby pup like her.” It`s her way to cuddle and get my attention, by the way. It`s also her way to show that she`s being affectionate. It happens just once in a blue moon, so I felt a little tingling feeling towards it. On the very same day, right after the rain, we went to our garden to see if my mom`s roses were still breathing. Fortunately, it was and what made my heart skip a beat was the red blooming flower trying to come out of its calyx.

I was simply amazed at the scenery that I imagined flying grasses around me. Then it hits my eyes… Dang! It`s itchy. Then my dog suddenly appeared out of nowhere and guess what? She did it again—covering her mess. What I am trying to say is that she once again kicks the bushes just to hole up her poop. That gives us the reason behind the flying grasses a while ago. More than that, it`s also her hobby to shred papers everywhere. She enjoys it—the pleasure of tearing something up with the use of her naked mouth. She really find it fun, I`m telling you. Another one is burying bones and other objects which serves as her valued food item because she thinks about her future meal. When she don`t have any food, she could dig it up anytime. Same goes to other substances, she hides a treat or toy so that she can enjoy it later. She`s a little weird, right? Those were just some of her peculiar acts… that`s for you because the most odd of all the odds was that she also dreams. “Dogs do dream on the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) and act on their dreams by moving their paws or twitching as if they were catching a squirrel,” animal experts say. When we, human beings have a sleep walk or sleep talk, puppies also have sleep kicks wherein they wallop as if they were catching a prey. What a moment that needs to be cherished, right? I want to make more colourful memories with her. That`s the only reason I am holding why I keep on searching where she is. I don`t want it to end just like that. I miss her… I whispered as a single tear started to crawl on my face. She is the most amazing stress-reliever I`ve had.

Nieutenants showcase Athleticism by John Mark Polistico

Grade 10 – Isaac Newton dubbed as Nieutenants leap their way to athleticism and sportsmanship as they displayed formidable guts and exemplary heroism in Basketball, Badminton and Volleyball on their one day Sports Festival last October 7, 2016. Sunshine Recomuno, Vina Diaz, Cherlyn Lomocso and Phoebe Kate Bacus banked on sharp smashes and defensive stuff as they snatched each division’s gold in exchanging shuttlecocks. The “Three Kings,” Elle Ramses Olmoguez, Mc Zomar Donque and Daril Ayuban lifted up their teammates from the tough blocks and screens of Jervyn Cagers, 97-85. Deadly spikes and zooming wallops pushed the match between Hamnida Netters and Laarni Slammers into a five-setter game. In the end, Netters prevailed, 2520,23-25, 25-21, 25-27, 15-12.

It seemed traditional games doesn’t exist anymore. Presently, kids are strongly engaged with our improved technologies particularly the gadgets. Perhaps, they forgot about how their parents, grandparents and ancestors played before. Let’s turn back the hands of the clock. Since some kids don’t remember, I would like to acquaint them with something from the past. Luksong Tinik is a famous traditional game here in our country. It originated from Cabanatuan City. The game has 2 teams with equal players. The leader of each team is called Nanay (mother) where others will be the children. The Nanay is usually the one who can jump the highest. Upon playing it, the mother of the opposing team will choose if who among of her children will be acting as the thorn.

Stretch. The chosen children will sit on the ground releasing their foot with sole touching each other. This will serve as the challenge for the jumper. The player will hop over and above the dangled feet. If the jumper surpass, the hurdle will extend another part of their body either of their hands or the other foot as long as possible so as it will create a wall. But if one of the members won’t, their mother will rescue by jumping on the hurdle in behalf of her child. But if all can’t including the Nanay , it is the chance for the waiting team to take their part. The winner of the game will be the group who reached the highest level of the hurdle. Through native games, all can be physically, mentally and emotionally fit. So, drop your gadgets for a while and let’s do the move; survive the thorns!

THE OFFICIAL CAMPUS PAPER OF ALABEL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Division of Sarangani I Region XII/ VOL XVII-NO. 1

Full time Athlete, Part Time Learners “Lulubog, lilitaw.” This is the common mockery to address students who only exist during Intramurals and other sporting events like municipal meets and eventually disappears during regular class sessions. Held annually, Intramurals is one of the best celebrations in schools. It is where students display their athletic skills in their sports of interest. In this way, they are somehow motivated to go to school to test their abilities. Yes, there are a lot of students in school and some of them are indescribably cunning when we talk about athletics. However, due to their loyalty to that particular game, they seem to compromise their academics, which is really the core of schooling, in exchange of the sports that they love. As a result, we often hear teachers complaining about their constant tardiness and extreme absenteeism. According to the data gathered from the School Form 2 in the Basic Education Information System (BEIS) from the 2,594 students enrolled in Alabel National High School, 10% of the population are athletes and from this percentage, 4 out of 10 are errant students who are deemed as “lulubog, lilitaw.” This issue should cause an alarm to the teachers and administration. Teachers are put in precarious situation where they contemplate on whether to promote or drop these students whose absences consume almost a school year. Often times, they are favored and privileged because current DepEd Policies such as mass promotion and access to education side them. This, in a no brainer, is unfair specially for those who students who strive hard academically. Equally unfair for the errant students themselves for they don’t the earn and get the best out the education opportunities served for them, even more unfair because the recognition they earned for the school is not fully celebrated due to their being errant attendance-wise. To be engrossed in sports is not a bad idea at all. In fact, this is way better than being addicted to vices such as cigarette smoking and drugs. However, as they say “too much is not good”. When the passion for sports affects one’s education negatively, it would be prim and proper to regulate too much affection to this interest. Let us remember that we go to school because we want to train ourselves to become good citizens and secure a future. The world outside is not a playground. It is a reality that our childish thoughts fail to consider. In this light, our athleticism is just a garnish to survive in the outside world. The real deal is to arm ourselves holistically and this could be possible if we expose ourselves academically and be present in school at all times. We should not to confuse the school simply as a training club where we only visit it whenever there is a competition to prepare for and depart when there is none. The government has already made a drastic move to provide access to free education for us students and our role in this initiative as learner is to take advantage of that opportunity to the fullest.

Bolts’ Runner Up finish, not a loss after all While most of the Ginebra fans are celebrating and are still under euphoria with Brownlee’s crucial buzzer beater that lead them to end an eight-year long championship drought, let us not forget their last conference’s greatest hurdles, the Meralco Bolts. Failing one game short for the championship title against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel does not categorize the Bolts as conquered team- the loser to be exact. This would rather attests to the team’s gradual and continuous improvement in the legue. It could be noted, just two conferences ago after Meralco hired Norman Black to be their new head coach at the start of the 2014-15 season, the Bolts exhibited tremendous amount of improvement record-wise. Their glorious run enabled them to earn a ticket in the semifinal round of the league – a first in the team’s fiveyear existence in the PBA. But the equally abled troop of Yeng Guiao’s stopped Meralco’s championship aspiration and got swept by Rain or Shine, 3-0. As the new conference progressed, the Bolts shocked and sent the then Grand Slam champs Purefood Star Hotchots to an early vacation in first phase of the quarter

With a grand slam coach leading the franchise, Bolts made it clear that they are not just anybody in the league and are not satisfied to be hailed at par with those team made to the wildcard round. With their remarkable winloss record, the team is now in included in the conversation as one of the championship contenders and favorites. Banking on players who bounced from one team to another reputation and a player who is new to the league and the system, the Bolts believed that the likes of Jimmy Alapag, who in the previous season announced retirement, and rookie Chris Newsome, they were capable of achieving something bigger; and they did. As the Governors’ Cup rounded up, the Bolts found themselves in position that no one expected they could be in. Described as a fast-paced sport, players from each team could issue a multidirectional attack since they can score in any of the four goals. The goals, or “chambers,” include a section at the top called a “crown,” where there are five holes. The ball is made up of two thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) panels, each with three arms that extend at 120 degree angles from one another. A player could use varieties of ways to score depending on where you shoot the ball from, how you shoot the ball, and the zone of the net you score through. The aim of the teams in playing earn as many points they could three periods of 20 minutes game, and the team with the most points at the end wins. So, if you think you have all the skill set demanded by this sport, then Kronum could be your sport.
