Primary News from the Pupils and Teachers of King’s College, Alicante
Charity Bake Sale Head of Primary Message February has been a very busy and exciting month in school. We have been fortunate enough to have had the Red Cross Ambulance team visiting the Early Years classes. This event was thoroughly enjoyed by all the Nursery and Reception children and staff. Chinese New Year was also celebrated across the primary school with many stories, activities and colourful events taking place for all our children to enjoy. Year 6 had a wonderful chocolate themed month culminating in a delicious Bake Sale which raised over 500 Euros for charity. Children´s reading has continued to improve and I have been impressed at how well children are moving up the coloured reading levels. Very well done to our children for their continued efforts to read at home and at school.

Chocolate Factory Year 6
This month has seen the Year 6 children visiting a Chocolate Factory and working on their chocolate assignments.
CHARITY Bake Sale
One of the Year 6 homework projects was to bake something involving chocolate! Yum, yum! The children brought their work to school on Friday, 15th February to be judged by Mr Laidlaw, Miss Jones and Miss Lubaczewska. To add to the fun the pupils all came dressed as a character from the book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory�. The standard of cake baking was exceptional and after lots of tasting and admiring of the fabulous costumes, the following winners were announced:

The day didn´t end there! After the cake competition the children sold slices of their cake to the whole school and raised €512 euros. The money has been donated to “Nazareth” school in Alicante and they were presented with their cheque during an assembly. The cake sale was a very rewarding day for one and all. Thank you to all parents, Year 6 staff, family and friends who helped make this day possible. It was a huge success. Very well done!

Budding Entrepreneurs in Year 6 Year 6 have been studying “business” as part of their Chocolate topic this term. One of their activities involved creating their own profitable sweet shop. They learned about pricing, product quality and presentation and how to calculate profit. Each child was allowed to spend €50 in the shops created by another Year 6 class. They thoroughly enjoyed the buying and selling session and some children really got involved in negotiating lower prices! Afterwards the pupils entered their data into an excel spreadsheet to see if their shop made a profit or a loss. A fruitful discussion evolved about what makes products sell!
Eco Warriors are on the War Path! The Primary School Council`s Eco-subgroup are on a mission. This month they have been calling into classes to check if they are being Eco-friendly. They will check if lights are switched off when the class is not in use; that taps are shut firmly; computers and projectors are shut down if not in use; windows are shut if the radiators are on; doors are closed to keep the heat in and there is evidence of recycling of paper and other materials.

Enrique 3S, Alba 3P, Cristina 4P, Mateo 4P, Sofia 5S and Lorena 6G and the group is led by Miss Sanghera.
The Eco sub-group first met last term and made Eco posters for the Key Stage 1 area of the school. This term they have been working on posters with Eco messages for the rest of primary.
Key Messages include: Switching Lights off Recycling Paper Turning off Taps Turning off Projectors and Computers Closing doors if radiators are on Closing windows when radiators are on
Miss Sanghera said, “It is really important for children to promote these environmental messages to their peers. The sub-group have worked hard to create some fantastic posters which promote these important messages.” Lorena from 6G said, “I am very passionate about the world around us. We must protect it and we can do that by making sure we recycle paper and reduce how much energy we use. I can´t wait to do the Eco-walk”. Mrs Gandhi, Primary School Council Coordinator, said that the Eco warriors were doing an amazing job and really keen to see the school become more environmentally friendly.

MAGIC WORKSHOPS This year we have a great range of after school activities and some of them are quite non-traditional. In January the Magic Workshop made a great start where the pupils of our primary school had a chance to discover the world of magic with the help of a professional magician Adrian Carratala. This workshop developed the ability of imagination, motion and creativity.
THE YEAR 4 STORY TELLERS IN SPANISH In order to encourage the Enjoyment of Reading, the students of Spanish Language in Y4 have acted as Story Tellers for the students of Nursery. This activity will continue throughout the year as it has already been a success. The younger ones have shown great interest in the stories that the older ones told them. They have taken into account the choice of an appropriate story to read, as well as a meticulous presentation of the reading.

CHINESE NEW YEAR IN EARLY YEARS The Early Years children have been learning about the Chinese New Year. They tried Chinese writing, made lanterns, decorated dragons and listened to Chinese music. In Nursery the children had a special Chinese restaurant in their role play area and some of the classes made noodles and had a go at using chop sticks. At the end of the week the Nursery children celebrated together and danced a special dragon dance with a huge dragon they had made. What a great time they had!!
THE RED CROSS AMBULANCE VISIT The Red Cross visited the Nursery and Reception classes to talk about health and safety. Each class had the exciting opportunity to go and visit the ambulance and learn about the important role of the Red Cross. The children had a great time exploring the ambulance and learning about the life saving equipment inside an ambulance. The children especially liked hearing the siren which was very loud and made us jump! We would like to thank Ana the school nurse for organising the visit and the Red Cross for taking the time from their busy schedule to come and talk to us.

CARNIVAL IN EARLY YEARS The Early Years Department really got into the party spirit in Carnival Week. The children made masks and streamers and enjoyed dressing up for the Carnival Parade as mini beasts. The teachers also had fun dressing up and made wonderful spider costumes!

PARENT CLASSES My thanks to the parents and staff who attended the latest of our Parent Classes for Primary parents. School nurse, Ana and school Psychologist, Maeva, led a presentation and discussion on Health matters. I would invite any parents who are interested in attending these classes to come along and also to let us know of any topics you think would help with you and your child.
