Sports Day 2012

He ad o f S e c on d ary Me s s a g e No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted It is a constant source of surprise and joy at how busy a school we are. Once again, the month has been filled with numerous events, trips, visits and visitors, which only serve to enrich our days. Sports day was, once again, a terrific occasion with numerous feats of sporting endeavour as well as rapturous applause and cheering for the competitors. Our first ever Literary Festival was a huge success and the articles and the pictures contained within are testament to the fun, happiness and academic rigour that these days brought. It also reminds me that regardless of how busy our lives our, we should always remember the little things that

help make somebody else’s life happier. We can all do small random acts of kindness during our busy days which make a difference. We can be unfailingly polite to every single person that we meet. We can listen to someone’s problem without immediately comparing it to one of our own. In the canteen, we can offer to take someone else’s tray back with our own. We can pick up some litter – even if it’s not ours. Importantly, we can also smile at everyone we see. I love seeing these random acts of kindness here at school and no matter how small, they are never wasted.

LITERARY FESTIVAL

“Bringing Books Alive”

O

n Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th March, The British School of Alicante hosted our first Literary Festival. This presented a wonderful opportunity for students in Year 6 , KS3 and KS4 to experience a range of literature in creative, inspiring and fun activities.

The theme for the festival was ´Bringing Books Alive´ and students explored particular aspects of stories, poetry and art. In Year 7 the students explored comic book heroes; the Year 8 had a scary look at frightening stories and in Year Nine the students read, wrote and performed poetry and songs. Year 10 and 11 analysed and composed their own songs.

We were delighted to welcome three visitors to the school during the festival, Ash Dickinson, a performance poet from the U.K. worked with Year 7, 8 and 9. For more information about him, visit his website at:

http://www.ashdickinson.com

A local storyteller, Raquel Lopez also worked with the Year 9 students. Maeve Friel, an Irish author based in Alicante also visited. She writes books for younger readers and she worked with Year 6 and Year 7. Her website is: http://www.maevefriel.com/ and you can also find out more about Maeve and her books on the website:

h t t p : / / w w w. a m a z o n . e s The students also participated in specially devised English and Art lessons, providing them with the opportunity to develop their creative skills, confidence and interpretation of each theme. It was an exciting two days and the students enjoyed the opportunity to ´Bring Books Alive´.

Y8 Literary Festival by Charlotte

On Wednesday 14th of March 2012 year 8 had a literary festival. In the morning Mr. Pemberton read us a horror story about an old witch, and then we filled out a sheet telling you the characters, the main events and what happens in the story. After, we went up to the gym and we met a poet called Ash Dickinson. He was a very funny poet and he told us lots of different ways to rhyme and make poems. He told us some of his poems and when he was reciting them, he did some of his dance moves! Also, when we had written some poems, some people read them out, and if they were in a group they acted it out! It was hilarious! After that, we went up to art with Mrs. Castro and Mrs. Parry and we drew pictures with Ink and pictures done on black card with chalk. On the pictures we had to put a scary sentence or write something scary. It was fun! After that, we went down stairs to the library to write a horror story. We got 45 minutes to do that and then we had to either listen to everybody else’s or present ours to the rest of year 8. There were all kinds of horror stories! Funny ones, scary ones‌ but at the end of the day, we all had loads of fun writing and listening to everybody! At the end we had to give Ms. Davies our stories and our pictures so she could put some up on the wall.

Y9 Literary Festival by luisa

What a fantastic day for year 9! All of my friends and I had a really great time. Poetry and literature at first sight don´t seem very interesting, but that Wednesday was awesome. We learned a lot about the interpretation of poems and how to represent our feelings in our own work. We began the one day project by choosing a poem from a selection shown to us by our teachers. Then in scrap we wrote what we thought about them, and planned how we would represent these thoughts the next day in our posters. It was fun to work with people in other classes and be in groups for this creative activity. On Wednesday morning we started to create our posters in groups. Some groups worked with small paper, others with huge A2 posters and we all used different kinds of tools and media to create them, such as tissue paper, crayons, pencils, and paint! That kept us busy all morning and then we worked in different groups towards creating our own poems and songs based on the theme of Perseverance. We practised the way we were going to act and perform them using the skills we learned with Ash Dickinson earlier that day. At the end of the day we played some drama games and then performed our songs and poems in front of each other in the school playground. We voted for the ones we liked best and the final winners were Ivan, Maria, Jose Luis, Jorge and Mario. All of the groups did a fantastic job and we had so much fun with this activity! We had an extremely enjoyable day all together thanks to Ms Davies, Ms McGuinness and Ms Taylor! We hope that we can repeat this experience next year!

Y7 Literary Festival Inés Year 7G I enjoyed what we did in the literary week very much. Tuesday was great fun, it was all about comics! First we created a super- hero, we drew it and wrote about its super powers, its character and friendships. Then we drew a girl in Manga style, which is a Japanese comic style. On the Wednesday a poet came to see us and we did all sorts of fun activities. First we created a poem and an alliteration beginning with the letter M. Mine was: Magic Monkey made magic marvellously. It was one of the best weeks ever!

Manga is the Japanese word for comics.

Silvia Year 7F I enjoyed making our own super- hero a lot! In my group our hero was called “Diamond Girl”. This activity was a lot of fun as we had to use our imagination and our art skills. I also enjoyed learning to draw in the Manga style. Then we had visits from a writer and a poet, it was good to meet them and do fun activities with them. It was a really fun week!

TRIP TO VALENCIA

In Year 12 / 13 part of the Spanish for Foreigners course at A Level consists of a regional study about the Valencian community; it’s geography, contemporary history, demography, culture, traditions, religion, language and issues that the citizens of this community face. Taking advantage of the opportunity to visit the community’s capital Valencia in March as the whole city is complete with tradition, festival and FALLAS! Here, some photos of the day we spent on the 16th of March in this city of flowers, light and love… Many thanks to María Vicente, the Director and all at ALOS Language Academy, Valencia for having given us such a warm welcome when we visited on the morning of the 16th to do a language exchange. We spoke in Castilian Spanish to these Valencian students of English (Cambridge FCE students) about Fallas. Our BSA pupils had the task of preparing and giving a talk about a cultural tradition of their own country. The most popular proved to be that of Shrove Tuesday, as Moresche explained, a tradition whereby we make, toss in the air and eat pancakes (with nearly everything and anything you can put on one!).

Pupils in KS3 and Yr6 enjoyed presentations on the subject of Cyberbullying given by the local Police Service. We had also a session for parents at the end of the day. Cyberbullying is when one person or a group of people try to threaten or embarrass someone else using a mobile phone or the internet. Cyberbullying is just as harmful as bullying in the real world. If you see it happening, report it. Don’t ignore it.

ST. PATRICK’S

DAY

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17, the saint's religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over 1,000 years. On St. Patrick's Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast--on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.

EMMA TABLE TENNIS Emma played in the Benjamin Category (9-10 years old) from Monday to Tuesday. In individuals, she progressed to round 16 (Octavos de Final) where she lost and finished ninth in the classification. She also played in doubles where she won to be subchampion of Spain. She has won a cup for this second position. From Wednesday to Friday she played as part of the Alicante Tenis de Mesa team in the Juvenil Category (15-17). They won the previous games and finished thirteenth which is very impressive as Emma is only nine years old.

On 13th of March, Emma and the rest of her team mates were received by Mariano Postigo, Alderman of Sports and Events of the City Council of Alicante (Concejal de Deportes y Fiestas del ExcelentĂsimo Ayuntamiento de Alicante), in his office at the Municipal Sports. The councilor wanted to personally congratulate them on their achievements in the Championship of Spain.
