T H E P R I M A RY N E W S L E T T E R Primary News from the Pupils and Teachers of The British School of Alicante

A ni m al Wel fa re Year 3 were very lucky to have a talk from the Animal Welfare Shelter, who visited BSA to collect 100â‚Ź that had been raised by pupils in secondary. They were introduced to a puppy that had only been found 2 days previously in a bag in a rubbish bin. The talk included information on how to look after your pet and the work the shelter does to care for abandoned animals. Year 3 have decided to run a competition to find a name for the puppy. By donating 50cents they can enter their suggested name and the winning name will be given to the puppy. Not only will we be finding a name for the puppy but we will also be raising some money to help care for it.

M e ss age from t he Hea d of Pri mar y Happy New Year December was an exciting month for both pupils and staff in Primary with all the festive activities and performances. The holidays have also been exciting and a time for celebration. Now the Christmas break is over and a New Year has entered with the promise of a fresh start.

This term we have a fresh start to build on what we learnt last term and another opportunity to set positive goals and get past any challenges. I am pleased to report that our pupils have skipped enthusiastically back to class and have settled once again to the routines of the school day. We are looking forward to all of the adventures that 2011 will bring.

In education we have two new starts during the year: the start of the academic year in September and the start of the New Year in January. However, the focus remains the same for both: relating to and understanding our pupils.

LAMDA News Year 5 and 6 pupils have started their LAMDA programme. Year 5 pupils have chosen their set poem and will now work on clarity of speech and expression before choosing their free choice poem later this month. Year 6 have all chosen their book and set the scene for their performance. They will now begin working on diction, movement and staging. Their chosen books are as follows:

“Goodnight Mr. Tom” “Alice in Wonderland” “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”

Head of Primary Fiona Thomas

Christmas Performances Once again Primary pupils and staff prepared an excellent programme of events leading up to Christmas. It all started with Nursery, who got everyone in the festive spirit with their Christmas songs, followed by Reception with their songs and dancing. Year 1 and 2 gave a wonderful performance of “It’s a Baby”, as did Year 5 and 6 with “Creepy, Crawly Christmas”. Finally Year 3 and 4 prepared a Christmas sing-a-long for all Primary pupils on the last day of term. Something that was clear in all performances was our pupils´ talent, confidence and level of spoken English.

Haiti Relief Fund Mrs. Pilkington and Sr. Mora recently attended an event hosted by the Red Cross in Alicante. On behalf of BSA they collected a certificate in recognition of our donation last year towards the Haiti Relief Fund.

Year 5 Greek Day Last term Year 5 covered the topic of the Ancient Greeks and concluded with a “Greek Day” on Friday December 3rd.Pupils and teachers wore ancient Greek style clothes, performed Greek tragedies, took part in Olympic style sports and had a specially prepared Greek lunch. The plays were watched by Mr. Laidlaw and Mrs. Thomas, who were very impressed with the performances. Miss. South also arranged for the pupils to work with clay and their magnificent efforts can be seen on display in the office area.

Football Tournament At the end of last term Year 3 and 4 pupils were invited to a football tournament at Kings College Murcia. Mr. Green, Mr. Williams and Nicky Stewart Y13 accompanied the boys and girls who came second, narrowly loosing in the final. Well done all those who took part.

Their work is displayed on the top floor of Primary outside their classroom.
