elcome to the 2007/08 Yearbook. As you will see looking through this edition, it has been a year of many exciting events. The Early Years have enjoyed Special Days, including Colour Days, Pirate Day and Carnival. The Primary children have had Special Weeks, including Science Week, Art Week and Book Week, while the Secondary department have had Superlearning Activities and a Sports Day, held at the Alicante town centre sports ground, a very enjoyable day for everyone. Jean Jaques Grazi’s Violin pupils delighted us all with a concert of outstanding young musical talent. The school football team won the local school’s league, under the expert training of coach Pedro Garcia Molla. We also had a large number of children feature in the top ranks of the Alicante schools’ chess league, winning many prizes, and again the school played host to one of the tournaments. We welcomed several new members of staff in September, including Mr. Laidlaw, Head of Secondary. I am sure all pupils and parents agree with me in saying what an excellent job he has done in maintaining the excellent standards in the secondary department, and how much we have enjoyed the Interhouse Competitions he has organised. As the year draws to a close, we are about to say goodbye to various people. The current Year 13 students, who are going on to universities in the UK, Spain, Canada and Australia, celebrated their final days at school with a Graduation Dinner for students, parents and teachers. Congratulations to Melissa Belak and Pablo Campos who have both received an Award for British International Students from the Council of British International Schools, and to Sasha Leach who won the BSA Sixth Form Prize. There are also some members of staff leaving this year. We say goodbye to Mr. Shaw, (History) who is returning to Portugal, and to Mme. Santerre, who has been our French teacher for 7 years and has decided to take up a teaching post in France. In the Primary department we say farewell to Mrs. Currie (Nursery) and Sra. Sanchez. We wish them all good luck and success in the future. Last but not least, we say goodbye to Mrs. Brock, Head of Primary, who has been appointed Deputy Head at the British School of Beijing (King’s Group). Mrs. Brock will be sorely missed by the whole school, but I would like to thank her for her inspirational work during the 8 years she has been at the BSA. I wish her every success in China. I would like to wish our whole school community a happy and safe summer and look forward to seeing everyone again in September.

Early Years

Mensaje de la Directora

B

T

he Early Years Department have had a very busy and exciting year, especially with their new playgrounds and the new Nursery classroom. We particularly enjoyed Art Week and Science Week and were very proud to show all the parents our fabulous work. We all had lots of fun at Carnival and enjoyed dressing up and joining in with many great activities. The teachers made us all laugh in their lovely clown outfits!

We have all been enjoying our outdoor play this year with all the extra space on the playground. We really enjoy playing together with our friends and are trying hard to share and be kind to each other. Well done to all the Early Years children. You have had a really great year!

Nursery This

year has been very rewarding and enjoyable for the children and teachers of the SeaHorse Class. The children soon realised that school was a fun place to be and started entering the classroom with big smiles on their faces. In the first term they learnt to follow school routines and to share the toys with each other. Outside on the patio the children love dressing up and dancing and take it very seriously!

masks with Class 2T. All the children enjoyed the occasion.

We also made musical shakers and danced to

Carribean music. Later on in February it was Science Week. We found out about recycling and made a recycling monster. We were amazed at the amount of rubbish we produce during the day. We explored different ways of moving our bodies as we danced like robots. During the second term we really started enjoying using our new vocabulary in English. We brought our teddy bears into school and used some fantastic sentences to describe them! We loved the story “We’re going on a bear hunt” We weren’t scared so we went on a bear hunt with Mrs Lovis. We then had a teddy bears’ picnic and shared our food with our teddies. Miss Millson joined in with the fun, with a very big teddy.

Colour days were good fun, we made jam tarts and scared everybody with our green monster masks.

3

In the summer term we are now trying very hard

to speak in English and are doing very well. We have been busy painting rainbows and planting seeds. We are impatiently waiting for our sunflowers to grow! Other highlights of this term include a visit to the theatre to see Snow White and a trip to the farm. This has been a truly wonderful year in the Seahorse Cass. It is incredible to see how the children have matured and to hear the fantastic progress they have made in English. We are very proud of you and know that you will love your year in Reception.

We had great fun this year!

The

second term started off sadly as we had to say goodbye to Miss James who went on maternity leave, but we were very lucky to be able to welcome Miss Montero as her replacement. In February we celebrated Carnival by making

pictures and talked about our family. We made a baby clinic in the role play area and we loved dressing and washing the babies. We were very good at looking after them and caring for them.

The

Nursery Starfish class have made a really fantastic start to their school life at the B.S.A. They settled into the Nursery really quickly after a few tearful weeks at the beginning of the year. They soon got used to saying goodbye to their parents and saying good morning to their new teachers Mrs Currie and Miss Millson.

Starfish class love listening to stories and we are

so pleased with how attentive they are at story time. We have got some excellent actors in our class and they really enjoyed acting out Goldilocks and the 3 bears and the 3 Little Pigs stories. What fun we had!

The

children quickly got used to learning in English and were soon saying colours and other new words. They especially enjoyed singing our Christmas songs at the concert. They joined in confidently singing about Santa´s big tummy and they were very brave to perform in front of so many parents. We were very proud of them!

During Science Week the children made some

amazing robots. We made a mummy and daddy robot and also collected all our rubbish from snack time to make a recycling robot. We could not believe how much rubbish we make in just 1 day!

In the first term one of our topics was colour and we

had great fun dressing up brightly for our colour days. We took part in lots of special colour activities including food tasting, making collages, masks and paintings.

The children in the Starfish class have had a re-

ally exciting year and have learnt so much. It is great hearing them speak so much English. We are really thrilled at the progress they have made and we will miss their happy smiling faces next year. We are sure they will all enjoy their new class in Reception and will do well. Fantastic effort Starfish class!

Nursery

Jellyfish

The

summer term started with the theme of “Growing”. We started by reading the story of “Jack and the Beanstalk” and planting cress and sunflower seeds.

It seems a long time since September when the jellyfish nursery class started school. Everybody was

really impressed with how quickly most of the children settled into the school. Very soon we were finding out where the toys were kept and learning lots of English words and phrases. In the first term we learned about shapes and colours and some fun new songs. At the end of term, near Christmas we were able to invite all our parents in and sing a special Christmas song about Rudolph. It was lovely to see lots of parents supporting their children.

L

ater in the spring term our topic was Families. The photos of families that children brought in provided a fantastic opportunity to talk about mums and dads, grandparents and people who are special to us. We also read some traditional stories like “The 3 Little Pigs” and “The 3 Billy Goats Gruff” It was fun drawing and painting pictures of the scenes and characters.

During February we celebrated Art Week by

making a display about Scotland. The children made the Saltire Flag and reproduced tartan patterns. We even made a collage of the Loch Ness Monster! When it was Science Week we all worked together to make a big robot out of things we would normally throw away. It was a good excuse to practice cutting and sticking skills!

L

ater in the term the theme changes to “Animals” and “The Farm”. We even get the chance to spend a day at a real farm where we learn about looking after the animals and do lots of exciting things like watching a puppet show and making bread.

We have had a busy and productive year in Reception in the same classroom as last year but with a brand new play area!

In the first term we learnt about our School and During Ourselves, including naming the parts of the body and our Senses. We had fun smelling and tasting new things, using the feely bag, guessing the musical instrument sound and painting pictures of ourselves and our friends. We drew around Sofia and Alvaro so we could have life size children to label and we enjoyed singing action songs about our bodies.

Arts week we looked at Ireland and found out about their folklore, music and dancing. We joined in with the Irish dancing and made leprechaun masks, flags and lucky shamrocks. Angelfish class sometimes buddies up with the older children in 5S and we sometimes work together for special activities.

In class we have listened to lots of stories about 3 animal friends called Cookie, Densel and Lulu who live in a tree house. We like to retell and act out these stories and have made masks and pictures of their adventures. In the gym we have played parachute games and sometimes for a treat we go in groups to use the infants climbing frame on the big patio, which we love!

The children have also watched plants and bulbs

In our topic on Toys we made and played with

new toys and games. We brought in our favourite toys from home to draw and had a Toy Shop in the role-play corner. We have also had a pretend cafe called Mr. Ted’s Tea Shop with real menus where we ordered and paid for our snacks with toy money.

The class enjoyed recycling paper, plastic and packing to make model robots during Science Week! We also played recycling games on the interactive whiteboard.

We are looking forward to a trip to the theatre and a visit to see the farm animals very soon. We also hope to set up a vet’s corner in the class and might even meet some real pets in class!

On the last day of Creative Arts Week we broke the piñatas and all had a treat. At Christmas we enjoyed learning the song “We’re gonna write a letter to Father Christmas” and the children were great performing in front of their parents in the sports hall. What a busy and successful first term.

Now the weather is getting warmer we have been out and about using the parachute and the play park, which is great fun. For the rest of the term we will be very busy learning and practising new words in English before the Summer holidays. This topic is a great way to end the year.

Later in the term we had a Creative Arts Week

and we learnt all about Spanish artists and painted our portraits in the style of Picasso. Some kind parents also came in to demonstrate Spanish dancing, which we loved.

But, I think one of our favourite activities is when we get to paint letters and pictures on the walls (with water, of course!).

we are trying very hard to get even better. Doing lots of role play really helps our English. We had to use our imagination to create fantasy boxes. Here you can see us playing in our pirate ship box. We also made a bus, a castle and a car.

Art Week Overview

During the Spring term, we also had a Science

week. We were all looking forward to making our robots from recycled products and I´m sure you will agree, our end results were great!

We arrived in September to meet our new English teacher, Mrs Crompton and our Spanish teacher from Reception, Señor Bellot. After only learning English for less than one year Year 1 has been a big challenge but a year where we have improved our skills and knowledge. In the Turtles we have improved our speaking and listening through many activites and subjects. We like nothing more than to practice our vocabulary in Plan, Do and Review.

We use the computer to explore our Science topics, materials and sounds. We use construction to make bridges, houses and other buildings. We listen to stories and music in English. We play English word games.

Out of the classroom we really loved our trips. We also celebrated arts week by studying the The day we went to the Ludoteca was brilliant. We learnt a lot about toys – old and new – and even got to play with all our friends in Year One! It was an action packed day.

We have had very special days in the class-

room too. In Science week we worked with Class 3P and Mrs Pilkington to make puppets. We had to think carefully about the materials we could use. We planned a design, then Year 3 helped us make our puppets. We were very proud of them!

We

also designed Chinese lion masks and painted a Chinese flower after looking at a print design.

We made Chinese dragon puppets using wax

and collage – they were very colourful and moved beautifully! We made the flag of China, using collage.

Y2 Sharks

We made sugar skulls to celebrate the Mexican “Day of the Dead. They were good enough to eat!

W

e made our own Mexican Tin artefacts. Priceless!

This is only the second year that the Sharks have

been at BSA. They joined the school in 2006 and went into Year 1, with me, their teacher , Mrs. Tomkins. I was also new to the school and the Sharks have made my first two years in Spain very special.

5S have been a lot of fun to teach this year, we have all really enjoyed some of the exciting topics that we study in year 5, especially the Greeks and the Victorians. 5S are some of the kindest most thoughtful children I have ever taught. They make me smile everyday and make teaching such a joy. I will really miss them next year, as they will be a fabulous year 6 class. Jo Swoffer

Mrs. Langton

Land yachts, Carnival masks, Easter bonnets, Creative Arts Week, siesta beds, dreaded SATs, lateral thinking puzzles, not forgetting Mr Partridge’s Amazing Performing Troupe and, to top it all, the end of Year 6 trip to Matalascañas! What a year! What more can I say? This just about sums up the school year for The Year 6 class of 2007/2008. Of course there has been a lot more to the year than just a list of events and activities. Being the only class in the year group, 6L have played a very important role in the day-to-day functioning of the Primary Department and I am sure their hard work has been really appreciated by teachers and pupils alike. It usually takes some time for a class teacher to get to know their new class but I warmed to them on their very first day. We have had some ups and downs and they’ve been a lively class to say the least, really keeping me on my toes! But they’ve been a great class, full of academic potential, sporting and artistic talent. Any teacher and any school would be proud of them.

Science Week Year 5 and 6 Science Week challenge was to design, build and test a model land yacht using only materials which had already been used or recycled such as old boxes and packets, bottle tops etc. We worked in groups of four and were encouraged to work with children who we don’t usually work with. We had to plan, test (with a hair dryer) and review our designs, making changes and adjustments (there were quite a few in some cases!) A certificate was awarded for: Good teamwork and co-operation (In 6L this went to the “Flying Pigs” Harry, Luis, Ornella and Paula.

Year 6 Poem Super Mario is our play-station friend A tennis ace right to the end. Not too happy with numbers was our Marta But working hard in Year 6, she’s a whole lot smarter With fractions Hana is a wiz, A clever young lady – that she is! There’s no fashion expert like Lucia She’s always “with it”, have no fear. When Carmen joined us it was a scoop, You should see what she does with a hula-hoop. She works hard from the minute she gets to school And at science Ornella is certainly no fool. When working in a group, he plays a big part, But Alex is happiest when he’s doing his art. If there were SATs for riding, Tom would be best. And as council Rep. he’s full of zest. At writing and poetry he’s come on a treat And cheese is what Cayetano loves to eat. Lydia can sing just like a bird, A sweeter sound you never have heard. With his hair gelled up, Scott’s really quite cool He’s made a good impression in his first year at this school. Playing with paper is Victor’s thing He’s often referred to as “Origami King”. On Badminton Day, Dani did excel We hope he’ll always do so well. Harry’s cheery and kind, a really good sort And cricket is truly his favourite sport. At doing practical jobs, Fernando’s just fine He’s working hard at this tasks well before nine. Always quiet, sensible and kind Paula’s the best friend you’ll ever find. Irene enters our class with her hair dripping wet She’s worked this year and good levels she´s get In practical work we can rely on Kyle, He always greets us with that cheeky smile. She works hard in class and is ever so bright What Victoria does is always just right.

Aesthetic appeal (it had to look good) The Flying Pigs again.

As quiet as a mouse but as fast as a hare Alfonso’s kind and friendly, tall and fair.

Overall performance (the one that went the furthest on Test Day). This went to the Exploders (Alex, Carlos, Irene and Marta)

Luis is the captain of the House of Fire And his knowledge of Alicante we all do admire.

It was, indeed, a challenge but we learned a lot and fun was had by all. 39

Some problems with clay had Ethan Port But not with the clay on the tennis court.

Michael might not be Year 6’s best artist But at reading and writing he’s definitely smartest. Carlos was new in Year 5 at the age of nine And now in Year 6 he’s doing just fine. At the end of the register we find Juan’s name But he’s first to save the goals in our football game.

Y7E

Secondary

We have been working hard all year in 7E as well as hav-

ing many fun times. I have enjoyed being a form tutor to this year 7 group, helping them settle in, sorting out some of their little problems and teaching them about friendship and many more things. Enjoy reading some of the experiences Year 7E have most enjoyed.

Year 7 has been quite a different experi-

ence. At first it was hard getting used to being independent and where your next class is, however Miss Epps has been a great help and when you had a problem it didn't feel weird to tell her. Thank you to all my teachers who have helped me through my first year in secondary.

AMY

This year we have done lots of things, for example: we went on a trip to Villena to see castles, we learnt a lot about castles. On Mondays some Year 7 boys play football with Mr.Nutter. We also had written a story competition in which you could win 50 euros. We’ve done work inspired by Andy Warhol in art and now it’s on display in the school.

At the beginning of the year I found it hard to get used to Secondary but soon settled in. My hobbies are playing the electric guitar and tennis. During the year apart from working a lot I’ve had lots of fun with my friends. It has been a fantastic year!!

This has been a very exciting year for all of us, We really like the classes and the people, and we are looking forward to coming back in Year 8 after the summer holidays!!.

At the beginning secondary was a great mystery but now we’re used to it. We got to know every teacher very well and the work is not very difficult. I liked it in secondary because you get to choose more types of food. Our trip was great fun, we went to visit Villena and Bihar. Y7 has been a great year and I’m happy to go on to Year 8.

During this year I’ve learnt many things, one of which has been learning French. It´s difficult but I like it. We have also studied drama. My favourite subjects are Sociales, Science, Maths and Spanish.

Hi! My name is Roberto I am a Year 7 student and I am in the school music band as well as the lunchtime football club. A couple of friends and I attended the “Lets Dance” auditions and we got in; we did a sort of break dancing show, Artem, David and me. Of all the things I have told you about, the one that I most enjoyed was the “Let’s Dance”, and I hope they will do it next year!

ROBERTO B

W

hen we started in secondary everything was so new, new teachers, new friends, new classes, some new subjects, etc. When we got to school on the first day I was nervous. With time I got better, happier and less nervous. Some times I still get confused with the classes. One day at school (8 of April 2008) I got confused and I nearly went to Spanish, thinking that I had ICT! But secondary is wonderful and amazing, you can do a lot of things and all my friends are perfect. It’s the best thing in my life?

AINHOA

This year I’ve learnt many things, I like English because I am enjoying all the work. My favourite subjects are English, Spanish, Science and Drama. The subject which is most difficult is Maths. I am happy this year because I have improved a lot. I hope I will continue to learn more things next year.

At the beginning of the year I was a little bit scared because I heard about detentions and strict teachers but the good bit is, we had many trips and activities. I like Secondary school. ARTEM

Year

ALBA

At the beginning of the year I was not very comfortable and I was very nervous. I found that it was hard to get used to secondary, but I did get used to it. My hobbies are swimming and playing football, apart from working. I am very happy here in secondary and I have lots of friends 42 and it is fun to play with them. It has been a fantastic year! Trip to Villena

David’s Concert

On the 21st of February all Year 7 went on a trip to Villena to visit two castles. We were generally well behaved except for a few small mishaps. We learnt a lot and we had a brilliant time, even if we were having a water fight, getting lost or being silly in the castles, nothing was broken and we all stayed together. Great thanks to Sr. Francisco and Mrs. Bowers for coming with us.

I was very nervous beforemy concert, but I thought hard about it and with encouragement from my teachers I was fine. A big thank you to Mr. Laidlaw who played the piano perfectly. DAVID

WRITTEN BY TARA

David’s performance with the violin in the Art and Music Evening was really really good, it sounded really fine! Art and music, perfect combination! MARIO David’s performance was impressive, it was very beautiful. He is a wonderful violin player. He seemed a little nervous but it did sound really well. ALEX

All about my Beautiful 8B’s

In spite of the fact that the average lesson includes at least three bellowed “Felix!” and a couple of “Alvaro, in English please!” I wouldn’t swap my class for any other! I have never met a calmer, more intelligent, organised group of young people. (No they didn’t pay me to say that). They are good friends to each other and care what happens, both good and bad things. They help each other and laugh together about what the world throws at them. Even on the worst day no one is left feeling lonely, misunderstood or just plain angry. They in fact provide a model for anyone to follow. So Year 8B here’s to you! I hope you never change (well perhaps except for Felix…lol) By Janet Bowers

Girls at sports day not all about running you know, posing is important too

Miss. Turton

It’s No! No! I’m frightened! I want to get off! It’s too hiiiiggghhhhh!!!

We thought that our experiences as 8T this year were best summed up by photographs.

So, we took a few sneaky pictures from Lita’s camera, searched out some of our most triumphant sports day moments and made this collage of pictures. We wouldn’t be complete without Roque’s artistic flair and so he has represented the boys in his unique style. The class have had a few new members this year, including Miss T herself, and have been supportive in helping them settle in. 8T have had a positive year and we hope that you enjoy looking at our photos.

Mr. O´Connor 90 are always a pleasant bunch. 90 are working hard to achieve good SAT results this year. It is an important step in their education. They have chosen their options for GCSE by now, so they should already be excited about starting them next year! It was a pleasure to have them as a form group this year. We have had two great additions to the group this year, in Aleksi and Jamie. Santiago and Kiefer did a good job as class representatives. Joe started on the fledgling house captain role for the group. Hugh continues to impress with his guitar skills and his playing with the school band. Marie is always in touch on BSA Moodle! Charlie and Nicole have impressed with some of their ART work this year. Anis brings his usual consistency and reliability to the group each year. Matthias and Brooke are ever ready to have fun! I´ll be interested in following the form’s progress next year and see them progress even more.

9O Comments on the year

Jamie: Mr. Fisher isn´t my teacher but who cares, he´s a legend he´s a great man but shorter than me! This year has been great, the sports day was one of the best days of the year.

Aleksi Mr.Fisher is a great man. This year we learned a lot of difficult maths, like adding and subtracting! This year we have gone through many changes and important decisions.

Santiago: Mrs. Fisher helped us in our life by teaching us for 3 years, and by saying 1 + 1 is 2!

Kiefer: Mr.Shaw is the best teacher because I´ve learnt a lot from him this year in History. This year we will choose our options and these lessons will pave the road to our futures careers.

Matthias: Sociales is fun because Sr. Francisco has a funny laugh and silly jokes but he makes us laugh! The work got harder, the days longer but overall its been the same (as last year).

Anis: Sociales has been great with Sr. Francisco this year because we learned lots of things!

Nicole:

Charlie: Sociales has been great

Brooke:

this year because of Sr. Francisco. We have had plenty of jokes and hard work. This year has been a lot more challenging.

Joe: Mr.Fisher is a great teacher who likes a laugh. This year has gone a lot faster than last year and it’s been a lot harder.

Geography has been great this year because we had it with Miss Turton, she´s a legend! The sports day in Alicante was good.

Mrs. Bowers – great teacher! And we had brilliant English lessons with her. I have enjoyed this year, even though we have to work a lot for our SATs.

Hugh: Sociales has been quite fun this year with Sr. Francisco. This year has gone a lot faster than last year. I don’t know if that’s good or bad?

Marie: OMG who is THAT??! That’s not my teacher! Somebody hellllllllllllllp…… ok look really closely……know who it is? Still nothing? Ok……..it´s……. Mme. Santerre, who would have guessed that? Duh nobody! But it is my favourite subject when my teacher is back

Mr. Wall is nice and kind, he likes to relax and unwind. Victor is the smartest in the class, he doesn’t like coming last. Harriet likes to joke in class, she is our funny little lass. Ewout is cute and small, he’s the opposite of Mr. Wall. Lucy is extremely hyper, it’s impossible not to like her. Carmen is our Spanish girl, she loves to wear her sparkly pearls. Ander is the hyper one, he is always having loads of fun. Mia is always on the go, she energetic that’s why we love her so. Melanie is going and we are going to miss her. Emily left but she’s back, there’s nothing that she doesn’t lack. Arturo is very shy, he never likes to reply. Natasha is amazing she’s top notch, she’s always wearing her D &G watch. Josele has just got braces, he always wins all the races. Monet is really nice, she’s made of sugar and spice. Jess enjoys going to a rave that superman has to come and save. Kieron and Kalim are always together, but this probably won’t last forever. Made by Year 9W Girls

What they said about others in the future…. Charlotte says… “Manolo will seem as though he is living a normal life, but then when he returns home he will continue with his evil plan to rule the world, alongside his sidekick mustard the fly. His plan will fail and after a period of bankruptcy, he will end up working in a tattoo and piercing parlour; he has 50 tattoos including ones that say, “Beer Rules” and “I ♥ Mum”.

Rosie says… “Michelle will be the next Paris Hilton or Nichol Richie; she will be minted and will have what she wants when she wants it!”

Marcelo says… “Miguel Sancho will be the future ICT teacher at the BSA”.

Rosie says… “Ivan will be minted as he will have a big factory in the country and he will be living in the Caribbean!”

Miss Kilner says… “Miguel Angel will successfully audition for the next Christopher Moltisanti (Michael Imperioli) in the 2028 remake of The Sopranos”.

Miss Kilner says… “Rosie will become a writer and her bestselling novel Romance is not Dead will win Love Story of the Year award. She will later move to America and write scripts for successful teenage television programmes called California Dreamin’ and The Cheerleader Years.”

Ivan says… “Jaime will be designing sea defenses because he is good at Geography”. Miss Kilner says… “Dani will be playing the cello for a jazz band in a smoky downtown café bar in Manhattan called ‘The Blue Note’. His friends now call him ‘Fast Fingers’ on account of his fast paced free-style jazz playing. He often reflects on his school life at the BSA and wishes that he had worked harder in his English lessons. He wears a trilby hat, drinks bourbon and says things like: “Hit it boys”, “Strike up on the C note”, “Smokin’ hot” and “We’re rollin’”. He profitably writes and publishes music for other successful bands such as: “Homework Club” and “Long Division” but because of his modest attitude, Daniel does not like to take credit for his achievements and is happy playing to a smaller audience in The Blue Note café”.

10K must be one of the liveliest, intelligent and high-spirited form groups in the school; as their tutor I really can’t take any credit … well, maybe just a little! This group has entertained me with their daily singing, lively debates and sarcastic quips; I can see that each one of these individuals will succeed in life. I like to think that the general disorder in the mornings is a result of their being part of a higher-learning scientific experiment demonstrating organized chaos; that the volume of their voices is due to their continued training in political debate. These students have very individualistic characters and I am sure they will continue to be one of the most vibrant groups in the school.

Miss Kilner says… “Laura and Ana will be presenting a children’s television programme called ‘Whoo Hoo, It’s Friday!’”

Miss Kilner 10K’s Form Representative

Manolo says… “I think Charlotte will be a singer and a dancer.” Miss Kilner says… Marcelo will (after much thought and considered reflection about his future) become a primary school teacher who will deal with the daily traumas of four year olds. Marcelo now believes in karma and views his work as a way of seeking forgiveness for his own conduct during his time at the BSA!” Claudia says… “Alejandra will be famous because she’s a star.” Alejandra says… “Claudia is a real sweetie and always will be.”

Speak nothing, hear nothing, see nothing and consequently we do nothing …. We are Year 10 you know.

A rare image of Daniel reading a book.

Ana saying: “Now come on Laura, Monday mornings really aren’t that bad.”

Manolo thinking: “Tra la la la la, tra la la la la, tra la la, tra la la, do do do, de de de…”

Ivan saying: “Yea, hey hey, I feel so happy!”

Laura saying: “Is it Friday yet?”

TIN CANNY Once upon a time in a land 46 years, 8 months, 2 days, 3 hours and 16 minutes in to the future the world was not as it is today. In an accidentally on purpose nuclear fallout, the Earth was left in ruins and the few remaining humans were either horribly disfigured or metalized. These few remaining people colonised the small town of Tin-Canny and formed a small republic. You may remember Maddie, the late, homework incompetent student who had dreams of becoming PC Betts. Nowadays she is the Queen of Tin-Canny and lives in 3210 square feet palace constructed mainly of tuna cans. You must remember Louise, the arty, last minute, class clown? After the explosion she was inexplicably turned into un hombre. Later he found love in his old classmate Maddie who he is now happily married to with their beautiful daughter Campbells. And Emily, the brainy but blonde kid. Well it was a shame for Emily, you will probably be upset to know that after the big boom she was turned into a Reindeer-Dog and was renamed H-57 by her faithful owners the Queen and King of TinCanny. She feels part of the family with her own dog house made of Heinz Baked Bean Tins. Julia, you know her the smart, lovable student who had her future planned down to the last A*. Julia was on one of her space missions when “it” happened and fortunately only lost her right eye from

the radiation. Nowadays she is the loyal, Royal bodyguard.

dictator of the original two residents.

Then there was Danielle, hardworking and always pushing it to the limit. She was captured by the opposition and cut into several hundred parts. We have reason to believe that their expert medical team are now performing extreme mechanical tests on her.

Shortly after the snap, crackle and pop Ambrosio, the evil betrayor of Tin-Canny fled to the Island and became the little snitch for Furor Arturo. Do You remember Ambrosio? The wannabe doctor who was always popping up here and there. What a dramatic change in careers eh?

Finally there is James, the most recent member of the colony. He was a quiet member of the class but had a hidden wild side. We were always confused with his nationality, Irish, Belgian, Jamaican who knows? But after the big bang he was turned 100% Italian. Being of this fortunate nationality in a world gone wrong where everyone thinks of their bellies before safety or family and friends, James made a good living as the world renowned Chef of Tin-Canny.

Pablo was a nice little boy who was always able to lend an arm, when it was available. Oh! How he has changed! (not his fault obviously) but the fault of the terrible detonation of that silly little bomb which caused him to lose his mind. Nowadays his brain is dysfunctional and controlled by The Great ruler Arturo´s son Dimitri.

and averti de la mode. Now he doesn’t have to worry about his style, as due to a series of unfortunate events he turned invisible. Now he travels between the two colonies laughing at their antics. (Miss Santere) I am now 94 years old and although I have Alzheimers, I remember 2008 at BSA when I was Y12S tutor and my life changed. I was living in Alicante and every morning when I arrived at BSA with my coffee in my hand, I felt that they were my family. We shared many moments together and experienced different emotions like in all families that year: nervous that there was a student joining us: James, proud that three Y12S students were Sixth Form Committee Members (Scott, Ambrosio and Julia), jealous that these members had free hot chocolate when they had a meeting, emotional when we celebrated Brittany’s 18!, sad when three of us left the school: Brittany, Esther and Fran, scared when Louise and Danielle were hidden under the teacher’s desk and screamed as I entered the classroom, so happy when Scott got that never before scored 100% in ICT!, worried when Pablo broke his right arm, stressed with all those exams and coursework, ashamed that Emily could think I was much older than Mr Slater, impressed by Alvaro, Ambrosio and Arturo’s

arguments during the debate we had, surprised when Ambrosio was on time, full of joy when Alvaro was jumping everywhere because he had finally passed the 5 IGCSEs he retook and crying when maddie finally graced us with her presence. Then, in 2009 I was not their tutor anymore and I felt there was a massive gap in my life. So I decided to adopt all the poor children of the world and educate them at BSA. This is why I have now so many grand-children and poverty and hunger don’t exist anymore on this planet.

The last member of our class was Alvaro. He was a cool kid, chic

Scott Coogan, Yeah the loudmouthed Scottish kid with the funny laugh. He was attacked by Nuclear Vultures after the blast who left him for dead. Thanks to the Queen and King he was reconstructed from metal debris and was elected the first Robot president of TinCanny. Once upon a time in a land not so far away from Tin-Canny there was a minute island that the Tin-Cannians were not aware of. It was ruled by non other than our good friend Arturo, you know him don’t you? Baby blue eyes, cute button nose, luscious pink lips. He was so dreamy. But due to his Communist attitude, he resided to the Island of JamJaro where he became evil

Form Tutor: Mr. Slater This year I have to say goodbye to a superb bunch of individuals whose combination of talent, maturity, drive, fun and hard work make them a memorable class and an exemplary year group. It is only right that from such a fine field of young people we should have had the opportunity to pick our very first Head Boy and Head Girl. Max and Amy Bembridge, thank you for beginning what will become a tradition here at the BSA: you have, indeed, set the standard. Well done! My next fond farewell is to our two ‘global student pioneers’: Sara Garcia and Ornella. Thank you for broadening our horizons here. Good luck Ornella in Canada and good luck Sara with your studies in Australia. Next, I would like to congratulate Melissa and Pablo on being outstanding students. Melissa, your art work over the years has been extraordinary; and Pablo’s award for sustained academic achievement is also well deserved. Both your talents and commitment to work is inspiring – I hope this award shows how greatly we appreciate and recognise your many achievements at the BSA. I would like to thank Amy Ward for her extensive contribution to school life: she has sung for us, danced for us, shown prospective parents around the school, worked as a key member of the Sixth Form Committee and was even central to the development of the Yearbook comic strip. Thank you

for everything you have done. Sasha, you have only been in the school for two years but it has been a pleasure to know you and teach you. Your grades are excellent, you are an extremely mature student and you have been a key member of this group in terms of your ideas, support, help to others, and all around commitment to Sixth Form life. Well done and good luck! Julia is an enigmatic individual who manages to make working extremely hard mysteriously easy. She has the capacity to absorb complex ideas with ease, write three good English literature essays in one week and yet still appear calm and composed. You deserve to do well, Julia – good luck! Callum is always positive despite a catalogue of rugby injuries. No sling or bandage will keep this young man down. I will definitely miss your upbeat, cheery demeanor, your ideas and views, and your explosive action at this year’s first Sports Day over the 100 and 200 metres. All the very best! Sara Deltell is heading off to Kingston University in the UK - a place I know very well. I shall remember how pleased, Sara, you seemed on your return from visiting the university, and so I would like to wish one of our longest serving students all the very best with your studies there.

What have we done?!

I shall never forget reading the numerous skills and achievements on your supporting statement. From Xuben I have learnt one thing (very clearly!) – when in goal do not be so foolhardy as to try and save a ball that he has kicked. This young man’s footballing firepower makes him a dangerous opponent!

Self defence day…

Mr. D. Slater

Mr. Slater is obviously not very Making the boys wear ties wasn’t good at self defence. as easy as the teachers thought.

Yearbook Contribution: Headboy and Headgirl We have had a great year as Head Boy and Head girl, and we hope our contribution has been worthwhile. Because we were the very first, we have had to set a standard and hope that the future years will continue and improve on this. We hope that what we have done this year has been beneficial and we wish all our year good luck for the future. Max Glover and Amy Bembridge

Year thirteen finally got the bet- Some students have further to Yeeehaaa! I’m off to Caannaadaaa… ter of Mr. Slater! venture than others…

Finally, I would like to say farewell to Xuben. This young man is very modest about the range of talents that he has.

Good Bye from Janet Brock Y

Despedida de Janet Brock U

ou will have heard by now that I will be leaving the BSA at the end of this current academic year to take up my new post as Deputy Head of the British School of Beijing. I have to say that I am leaving with mixed emotions. There is the obvious excitement at the new adventure that my husband and I are about to embark on. Moving to China will bring many new experiences into our lives, and we are impatient to get there. However, this excitement is at the same time mixed with the sad feeling that an extremely important phase in my life is coming to an end.

I still remember the very first morning all those years ago when I walked into the playground at CEBAT to meet with Elaine. Fernando Bellot and Ginny Pilkington were talking together, and they saw me standing there not quite sure where to go, and they asked me if they could help. This was the lovely atmosphere that pervaded the school even then and, which we have all worked so hard and so successfully to maintain.

At that time there was huge uncertainty about the future of the small school (there were only about 80 pupils), and I don’t think any of envisaged the journey that we were about to start.

Then of course there was the move to Agua Amarga, becoming part of King’s Group, and the subsequent expansion of the school to its current size. This was obviously a hugely important time for me and I was able to put my own stamp on the primary department. I have been enormously fortunate to have worked with some of the most professional and dedicated teachers and managers I have ever met. I can honestly say that it is thanks to them that I have had such a wonderful time working at the BSA. My colleagues have made it an absolute pleasure. My department has grown from 65 children to 540 children in 8 years. Every single child has brought some form of joy to the department and I have loved seeing them grow and watching them blossom as they move into secondary. It has been such fun spending time with them all and getting to know their characters. I have felt lucky to have known so many supportive parents who are striving for the same goal as us; for their child to learn and reach their full potential in a safe, happy, vibrant environment. Being able to work in collaboration with our parents has made my job here such a productive one. Finally, of course, I would like to publicly record my thanks to Elaine Blaus. I don’t think it is overstating the case to say that I would not be the head of primary that I am now if it hadn’t been for the help, advice, and support that she has given me over the years here at BSA and especially since I became the head of the primary department. She has been instrumental in my professional development in that time, and I cannot thank her enough.

First Impressions R

Primeras Impresiones I

When I first walked through the gates at BSA over a year ago, my first impression was one of cautious optimism with a hidden sense of excitement. The school buildings were purposeful and clean, not too imposing, yet somehow welcoming. The first person I met was a pupil who smiled pleasantly at me and offered a muted ‘hello’: this was my first impression of the pupils at BSA –happy, quietly confident and friendly. When I met some of the teachers, they engaged me with a warm, friendly and understated openness which left me with the first impression of a happy, confident and supportive staff. The office staff greeted me with bright and confident gestures leaving me with first impressions of quiet calmness and efficiency. Later, when I met some of the parents, I was left with the first impression of parents who are purposeful, expectant and quietly contented with life at BSA. I hope that although these are my own first impressions of BSA, they would be echoed by pupils, staff, parents and guests alike. My first impressions were good!

esearchers in Canada have recently stated that it takes only 50 milliseconds for the average person to form a first impression. Internet users typically make their mind up over which site to view in a 20th of a second. So, if we are to believe in the old adage that First Impressions Count, how much time do we have to make that first impression?

So, one year on, were my first impressions the right ones? They certainly took me more than 50 milliseconds to accumulate but in truth, perhaps they merely reaffirmed what I had known after 1/20th of each first second. The problem with first impressions is that they are not always the right ones. Our opinions change through experience and time, but what is important is that we strive to make the right impressions on others from the outset. So, what first impressions have I made at BSA? Perhaps as pupils, staff, parents and guests this is a question we should all ask of ourselves. First impressions do count but they count both ways. We must also reflect on our own influence on those around us and seek ways to maintain and improve upon the impression we make on others. Attitude, appearance, respectfulness, consideration and optimism all contribute to what impression we create for ourselves and by affiliation, our family, friends and school. We reflect in ourselves the influence of others around us and the expectations we set for ourselves and those set for us by others. BSA is an emerging community and we are progressing towards excellence: in order to succeed, we all need to be making the right impression, first and always. Impressions are made by people and their actions, not by buildings and statistics. We are the guardians of our own future impression on the world and we must work together to provide the correct impression.

But now, China calls. As I said at the beginning, I am keen to get there and start the next stage in my life. I think that if I have half the fun I have had here, and work with people who are only half as good as the people here, I will be thrilled.

At BSA, my first impressions were of a happy, positive, caring and expectant community. Today, I still believe my first impressions were correct and I hope that I reflect these through my own contributions at school. I expect and hope every member of our community can reflect the correct impression as together we go about the desire of building BSA into the excellent school community it strives to be. In the process, let us all try to create the correct first impressions and continue to reflect these every day we can.

Best wishes Janet Brock

News from the Library Many activities took place in our school library this year. There were four book fairs: Bookworld, Usborne, Bookbox and Penguin. Our students and their families enjoyed visiting them, flicking through books and buying lots. The library also organized the well known Red House Book Club, which gave students the chance to buy the latest titles from Britain. Thanks to all those who bought a book because with every purchase we earned FREE books for our school! After all these book fairs the school was stocked up with plenty of books.

SPONSORS

A major event was the opening of the Junior library. Teachers, students and parents made the most of it and junior students came every week to borrow books to take them home for the first time! Children enjoyed this experience a lot and their behaviour was exemplary. Parents were also involved in this project. They were invited to come and work or read with their children after school and it was a very enriching activity for both, students and parents. We hope to see them very often. Students in the Secondary Department participated in a competition called “Si eres original, eres de libro”. In groups of minimum two, maximum four, they had to do a research project on a topic of their choice: Art, Music, Science, Geography, History, Mathematics, Sport, Cinema, Technology…, coordinated by a teacher or the librarian. They visited the school and local libraries, used the Internet and did surveys and interviews.

On May 9th, “The 2 Steves” (Steve Barlow and Steve Skidmore), authors of many hilarious, well known book series for children, visited the school. Children took part in different workshops on literary games, attended a presentation about how to be an author and participated in a writing and drawing competition. It was superb! See you next year
