Mensaje de la Directora

L

eading through this edition of the yearbook reminded me that Kings College, Alicante continues to be a busy and dynamic place to go to school.

eer esta edición del anuario me recuerda de nuevo que King’s College, Alicante sigue siendo un lugar activo y dinámico donde ir al colegio.

Events I will remember are the exciting Swimming Gala and the hugely competitive Sports Day. Inter-house rivalry seems to have driven our young athletes to new heights, speeds and distances. Ashford Dawkins and Ambrosio Navares did particularly well. Other competitions where the school performed well included the Alicante Chess tournament when over one hundred children came to play chess in the sports hall. Congratulations also go to Pedro Garcia Molla the manager of the Year 4-5 school football team who finished third in the Alicante Schools’ League where they have been competing for the last three years. Next year we want to do even better, so if you “have what it takes” make sure you introduce yourself to the team in September.

The newly improved sports hall means the school is attracting high profile visitors. Capoeira is a visually stunnning mix of martial arts and dance from Brazil. The school was very lucky to host the Sixth International Capoeira Meeting at the beginning of June where workshops and demonstrations were held to great acclaim. There was also a Saturday morning Introduction to Tennis that we hope will lead to the next Rafa Nadal, Fernando Verdasco or Jamie Murray coming from the school. Important visitors included Mr Martin Halsall and Mr Trevor Rowell. Mr Halsall is the CEO of Kings Group and Mr Rowell is on the King’s Group Board of Directors. They were both hugely impressed with the standards of academic achievement as well as the supportive school ethos and high quality facilities that have we have developed here. It might surprise some of our younger children to know that, just like them, teachers look forward to the end of the school year. However, inevitably the end of the year means that we end up saying good-bye to some teachers. Miss Kilner is going back to the UK after five years as a dedicated and hard working colleague. Congratulations go to Mr. Fisher who is retiring from his role as an inspirational and expert maths teacher. We also say “adios” to Srta. Garcia who has been helping secondary pupils improve their Spanish. We also have to bid farewell to Miss Jones and Miss Lightfoot from Primary. However, teachers departing means more teachers arriving so look forward to welcoming new colleagues in September when the school comes back from a well deserved summer break. All the teachers and school administration wish you every one of you a well deserved, happy and relaxing summer holiday. We will see most of you in September, ready to work hard and play hard all over again.

1

Mrs. Elaine Blaus

Early Years T

he teachers in Early Years are very impressed with how much the children have grown up and developed this year. We are very proud of them all and wish them every success and happiness in their new classes in September. Highlights of the year include the special Colour Days in Nursery, the World Book Day when the children dressed up as characters from books, Carnival when we made gorgeous strawberry and watermelon costumes, and our trips to the theatre and to a farm.

I would like to thank all the teachers and teaching assistants for their dedication and hard work and for making the first years of school a happy and fulfilling experience for the children. I wish you all a lovely summer. Remember to keep speaking and listening to English during the holidays. Joanna Millson Early Years Co-ordinator

Seahorse

T

he children in Seahorse Class have worked hard as well as having tremendous fun this year. The tears at the start of the year were soon replaced by laughter and smiles.

Sorting Letters

In the first term we studied colour and worked on a range of colour related activities. To celebrate World Book Day in the second term we dressed up as characters from the books we were reading. Mrs Lovis and Mrs Carmona transformed themselves into a very scary witch called Meg and Mog her cat. The children were encouraged to wear fancy dress and they gave talks about their favourite literary characters. During Science Week we took special exercise sessions with Mr Williams and Miss James and learned about the importance of healthy eating.

Story Telling

The class also worked on a teddy bear project. This included going on a bear hunt adventure as well as a Teddy Bears’ picnic which will be remembered for a long time.

World Book Day

The emphasis on child initiated learning has encouraged all the children in our care to demonstrate their creativity and imaginative potential. I wish the ‘Seahorses’ well as they move on to Reception. Mrs. Carmona The children performed an outstanding celebration song at Christmas. In the classroom singing was a regular activity. All the staff who have worked in Nursery this year have been impressed with the children’s achievements and these have been celebrated in the weekly assemblies. The children have made great progress with their English and are starting to enjoy the challenge of listening and speaking in a new language. Every day they improve and expand their vocabulary. The most satisfying thing is to see how happy and secure the children seem when they come into the classroom as well as the excitement and the enthusiasm they show for learning.

Blue Day

Starfish Nursery T

he class learned through a variety of topics including Babies, Traditional Tales, The Farm, Healthy Eating, and The Seaside. A trip was arranged to see The Three Little Pigs and The Jungle Book at the theatre. Dressing up as stars and singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star for the Christmas concert was fun, as was wearing red strawberry costumes for Carnival. Many of the children celebrated their third and fourth birthdays with their class mates.

A

ll the children have learned how to follow instructions in spoken English and they received certificates at the weekly assemblies to mark their individual achievements.

I

n Nursery we use structured play as a very effective way to learn. Both indoor and outdoor activities allow children to follow their interests and develop new skills.

I

am very proud of the progress that the children have made in Nursery and wish them well as they move on to Reception class next year. Mrs. Davidson

Nursery T

his was a very productive year, great progress has been made. It has been a pleasure to see the class develop into a group of very interesting young people. In the Autumn term we worked on colours, with specific days set aside for red, blue, green and yellow. In the spring term the whole class celebrated World Book Day. At Christmas parents were invited to watch the class perform a number of Christmas songs.

Jellyfish

We have an assembly every week where we focus on two or three children who have impressed the staff with their progress and hard work. Small personal achievements are recognised; like being able to identify their own name when it is written down. The ability to work with others as a part of a collaborative team is an important skill that is rewarded; taking time to help tidy the class at the end of the day is a good example of this. Children in early years are encouraged to initiate their own learning. It makes the classrooms very busy and it is impressive to see all the children using their imagination and really getting engaged in the activites they have chosen.

Starwberies at carnaval

This year the classroom learning was enhanced with visits outside the school. The staff and childen thoroughly enjoyed trips to the theatre. The children behaved extremely well and acted as great ambassadors for the school. Mr. Escott Free painting outside

Rainbow Fish Reception W

e have had a fantastic year in Reception. Rainbow Fish are a lively, lovely class full of energy, imagination and enthusiasm for everything they are introduced to. The focus on child initiated learning encouraged the children to decide where they want to spend time and energy and it has proved very effective through a range of different learning experiences. For Halloween children and teachers dressed up in scary costumes and worked on a day of special activities. In Science Week they learnt about the importance of healthy eating and exercise as well as making some very impressive watermelon costumes for Carnival. Every day there was some structured physical activity and in groups the children made fruit kebabs and looked in depth at fresh foods. In the second term of the year the children each brought in a favourite toy which was used to inspire the design and construction of their own robot.

Class trips this year started with a visit to the theatre to see The Three Little Pigs in Alicante. In the spring term much fun was had making puppets and experimenting with the exciting toys in Ludoteca. The class also went to see The Jungle Book performed by the puppet theatre in Elche. The final trip of the year was to a farm and, as always, the children learnt a lot. The year in Reception sets the foundation of future learning. The children are now all doing their best to speak in English and each week they have to learn and practise new vocabulary. Almost all the pupils are able to write their own names and the standard of their work with numbers has been most impressive. The children become much more independent and are able to make decisions for themselves, establishing important skills for life in school as well as outside. Mrs. Perea It is wonderful when learning can be made really entertaining. For World Book Day we used story telling and dressing-up to encourage the class to discover and share ideas with other children. Miss Millson leads a weekly assembly where we highlight the achievements of two or three children. Certificates are awarded for good work in class, playing nicely in the playground and helping around the classroom. This helps childen focus on achievements and progress.

Reception

Puffer Fish

M

iss Sulston and Miss Millson have really enjoyed teaching such a lovely class. The teachers are especially pleased with the children's level of English and their attitude towards learning. The class are all quite expert at writing their names because this has been practised first thing in the morning. The children are increasingly independent due to the focus on child initiated learning. The children are able to tell the teachers in English where they want to work and what activities they have been doing. The children have really enjoyed reading stories and singing the Jolly Phonics songs which have helped them to learn the letter sounds really quickly. Puffer Fish have had lots of exciting trips this year. Highlights included a visit to a toy factory where the children were given the opportunity to play with lots of new and exciting toys and made their own puppet and two trips to the theatre, The children watched live performances of two well known stories, The Three Little Pigs and The Jungle Book. An exciting trip to the farm rounded off the year. The children really enjoyed playing with the goats and making bread.

M

ost children love a picnic and when this was combined with being given special permission to bring a cuddly toy into school it was a great opportunity to learn how to make sandwiches for The Teddy Bears Picnic. For World Book Day children and teachers got to share their favourite books and to dress up as memorable characters from books. In Science Week, the children learnt how important it is to eat healthy food and exercise properly. They especially enjoyed tasting all of the different fruit on the exploration table and doing a daily warm up exercise. As part of the healthy food project pupils made watermelon costumes for Carnival which were paraded in front of the whole Primary school.

E

very week someone special gets chosen to sit on the Star Chair while the rest of the class sit in a circle and talk about their special qualities. All the children really enjoy this as it presents a wonderful opportunity for positive thinking about their self-image. On Wednesdays there is a special Awards Assembly for Reception where children are given certificates for their hard work and effort in the classroom and on the playground. All the children who receive a certificate are allowed to put a special leaf on our tree in the infant hall.

7

Last but not least the class had a great celebration of Christmas. They dressed as Christmas trees for the Christmas concert and sang My Little Christmas Tree and Let’s Sing. Everyone looked very festive and sparkly in their wonderful costumes. Miss Millson and Miss Sulston

Clown Fish

Reception

T

he Clown Fish children have had a very busy year and have proven that they are a hard working team. They have taken part in a wide variety of activities and combined having fun with lots of learning.

I

n the Spring term there was a visit to a toy workshop and the class had the opportunity to make their own clown puppets. The toy workshop also let the children play in a large play room. There were so many toys many of the children could not decide what to play with first.

D

uring the Autumn term we celebrated Halloween and took part in lots of interesting activities. The children particularly enjoyed splashing around while bobbing for apples and playing with the sticky witch’s goo.

T

he class trips that the Clown Fish went on this year have been entertaining and educational and the children have especially enjoyed their visits to the theatre. They watched performances of The Three Little Pigs and The Jungle Book. The whole experience was exciting, especially when the lights went down just before the shows began. Back at school the children really enjoyed acting out the stories again.

A

s part of our Christmas performance the Clown Fish class sang The Penguin and The Polar Bear and did a dance to go with it. They were very entertaining and all the parents enjoyed it.

We took advantage of Carnival falling during School Science Week by making watermelon costumes and joining the whole school Fruit Parade. Miss. Whitttam

D

uring Science Week in the Spring term the children learnt all about keeping fit and eating healthy food. They made fruit kebabs and tasted many new types of fruit that they had not tried before. They had a keep fit lesson every morning to help keep in shape.

Y1 Turtles

T

hey say "slow and steady wins the day" but this year with The Turtles has gone really fast. At the start of the year Mrs Crompton and the children were excited to see that their classroom was equipped with an interactive whiteboard and over the year it has been used in many subjects.

I

n the classroom the children covered several different topics that introduced them to new subjects. These included Ourselves, Families, Toys, Light and Dark, Materials, Plants and The Seaside. During the year in 'Topic Mornings' the class have developed their drawing, painting, collage and printing skills while learning about these different topics.

I

t is important to learn how to work in groups. The Turtles have learnt to work together in pairs and in small groups and to present their work to the class once it has been completed.

he Turtles took part in a week dedicated to Art and Design Technology. As well as making very creative collages of animals and learning how to weave they applied these craft skills to make small individual weavings that were pieced together to make one huge piece of art. The Turtles have become accomplished singers over the last year – and took part in the "Little Angel" production at Christmas – They all looked very festive in their Christmas Tree costumes. They sang special songs in front of parents and other children at our Spring assembly.

9

o as you can see the Turtles have been anything but slow... they have had a very, very busy Year One and they are all looking forward to becoming Year Twos in September. Mrs. Crompton

Y1 Penguins

Miss Robins writes: The Penguins have made great progress this year and they have made my first year at King’s College, Alicante very special. They have worked very hard and made huge progress with their English.

In February we had Science Week with the focus on being healthy. The Penguins made a fruit and vegetable shop in the role-play corner and carried out daily physical exercises. We also encouraged them to bring healthy snacks for our patio time. The children dressed up as bananas to celebrate Carnival and enjoyed being part of the Fruit Parade.

The Penguins have worked very hard this year and I am very proud of them all. Every day one of the Penguins is chosen to be the star of the day and it is always a difficult decision for me to make.

In Year One the class have learned lots of new songs and because they love singing so much, we put on a special singing assembly in April for the parents. The children made hats and were taught some new dance moves. Parents and pupils really enjoyed it.

My Favourite part of Year One was . . . Nereida - playing with the toys Yago – being star of the day. Javi - building cars Carlota – going on the trip Marina G – Plan, Do, Review Alex – visiting the toy museum Paula S – the trips. Marco – playing on the climbing frame and getting star of the day Sofía – colouring pictures Roser – playing at the museum Sami – going to the computers Alejandro B – getting the star of the day. Miguel – using the interactive whiteboard Marina F – having golden time Berta – listening to stories Molly – using the computer and being the star of the day Alejandro N – Halloween and making spider cakes. Gonzalo – when I was the star of the day Jorge – the Christmas party Daniel T – golden time Esther – dressing up at Halloween MariaLuisa – the toy museum Tomás – the trip, the computers and Halloween! As part of the Christmas production of ‘The little Angel’, the Penguins sang a song about Jack Frost and dressed up as snowflakes. Our costumes were great and everyone was very impressed.

Each and every pupil has made excellent progress with their English and is speaking more fluently in the classroom. The children have worked hard to learn key words which will allow them to read and write more confidently.

Y1 Puffins

Primary

P

uffin class has had an excellent year. All the children have worked hard and have grown up a lot since the start of the year. Mrs Phillips is really proud of the progress they have made and wishes them well for Year 2.

The children created these pictures and words on computers to explain what they have improved at over the year.

One of the highlights of the year was World Book Day. The children were allowed to come to school dressed as a character from a book. The whole classroom was filled with a variety of princesses, superheroes and cartoon characters. The class took the opportunity to learn new ICT skills by creating a picture of their character on the computer. This year the Puffins have been doing lots of singing and they really enjoyed performing the songs to an audience. Back in December they dressed up as toys and shared a Christmas song with everyone during the production of “The Little Angel. During the Spring term they practised songs about the seaside and animals. Singing these songs to our parents in the Easter sharing assembly is a happy memory.

A

s part of our art work in the summer term we looked at the work of Andy Goldsworthy; he creates pieces of art using objects from the environment. Taking this idea as inspiration the class had great fun creating sculptures using sports equipment. The photographs show our sculptures.

Y2 Seals

I

t has been a fantastic year with the Seals. I have been lucky to see how much progress they have made since I first started teaching them in Year 1. I am very proud of them all, they have learnt so much, work extremely well together and have matured a lot. They are now ready for their next adventure in Year 3. We have had so much fun working together as a class to make our learning exciting. I would like to take this opportunity to say ‘Goodbye’ to everyone at King’s College, Alicante as I am going back to England in the summer. I have loved working here and want to thank everyone for making my time here a very happy one. It is an amazing school, with fantastic staff and gorgeous children who I will miss very much! Best Wishes for the future. Miss Jones

We went on an interesting trip to Clot de Galvany where we learnt about different habitats and hunted for bugs. The Seals were good at finding all sorts of insects and plants.

Children have really enjoyed receiving star of the day certificates and putting up their stars on the board in the hall.

We all worked together each term to make a new role play corner. We have had a hospital, a garden centre and a ship.

For the Christmas performance, The Little Angel play we learnt a dance ”Rocking Around the Christmas Tree”, some children spoke beautifully as narrators and actors in the performance.

Dear Y1, Don’t be scared of Y2 it is fun! We have been bug hunting around school and went to the nature reserve on the bus.

Every week we sing new songs in class. These songs are performed in assemblies. The children have impressed me at how quickly they picked up the words for each new song.

We make lots of things and do lots of Art. It is not all hard work, we do get to play too. The toilets aren’t in the class but you can still go to the toilet near the dolphins’ classroom. The teachers read you lots of great stories. We go to the computer room and play Numeracy games. We do Plan, Do, Review. We enjoy show and tell and Golden Time. We do like guided reading because there are games, books to read and writing to do. We have role play corners and have made a hospital, a garden centre and a boat. Miss Jones is a great teacher, all the teachers are good and clever. Love from The Seals

Y2 SharksPrimary T

he Sharks have had a brilliant year and they have made me very proud of all their hard work. We have had lots of fun together, learning new things. The Year 2 topics have been really interesting, and the Sharks have especially enjoyed leaning about The Great Fire of London and Samuel Pepys. I will miss them lots, every day they make me smile, but I know they will have a fantastic time in Year 3. Thank You Sharks, from Mrs. Tomkins.

An ambulance came to school for the children to look at. They all got inside at the same time, it was a bit of a squeeze. Lucia and Alex were put on the stretcher and the siren was very loud.

Dear Year 1 Penguins We were a bit worried when we came from Year 1 to Year 2 so we are writing this letter to let you know that Year 2 is lots of fun ! We don´t work all the time, we do get to play. We really like Golden Time, it´s the same as Year 1, we get 10 bones by working hard and being helpful. We have really enjoyed using the computer and programmable toys. We like the teachers too. In Year 2, we sang about minibeasts and the Great Fire of London and really enjoy singing them in our Key Stage 1 Assemblies. On Fridays we have spellings and sometimes they are easy, but they always help us with our writing. We would really like to stay in Year 2, and hope Year 3 will be as much fun and the work will be easy. Enjoy your new class. Love from The Sharks

P.E. is one of the Shark’s favourite lessons. They have learnt to play team games, but they all know how important it is to warm up first.

In Science Week they learnt about healthy eating and read the story of Handa´s Surprise. They really enjoyed tasting lots of the different fruits that were in the story. Then they made their own funny fruit faces.

This year they have been learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. They were given some silk worms to look after and have watched them turn into chrysalises and then butterflies. You can hear them munching the leaves and they wriggle everywhere.

The class has been learning to use the keyboard and really enjoy going to the computer suite to improve their typing skills.

Y2 Dolphins A note from Mrs. Anthony I would just like to say what a fabulous year I have had with the Dolphins. I have really enjoyed teaching and learning together with them. They are such a supportive, well behaved and organised class. I shall miss them next year. Good luck in Year 3 Dolphins. Mrs. Anthony

Primary

Dear Year 1, We are writing to you so that you know what it will be like in Year 2. You don’t have to worry. It is nice working with all the Year 2 teachers and Mrs. Anthony isn’t cross all the time – sometimes she is quite nice! You will go up with all your friends so you won’t be alone but it’s also nice to play with new children in the playground. The work isn’t too hard. In Year 2 you still do Plan, Do, Review and guided reading. We enjoyed learning about The Great Fire of London and Florence Nightingale. We also enjoyed making a fruit salad face in Science week. At the moment we are learning about Barnaby Bear which is fun because you see where he travels and we have made an aeroplane to play in with seat belts and everything. In maths we work with bigger numbers but the teacher helps you and you play lots of games. We are also very good at the past tense! In Year 2 you will still have golden time if you get 10 bones (merits) and you can bring in a toy to play with. If you are ‘Star of the Day’ you are very happy too. In Year 2 you can still bring things in to show the class. At special times of the year we do lots of different things like the Christmas concert and visit Santa in his grotto, dressing up as pineapples in Carnival week and making chocolate nests at Easter. We also planted our flowers and have seen our designs painted on the playground. We also go on lots of trips to the theatre and to visit Clot de Galvany to look at the habitats. When Mrs, Anthony asked us what our favourite part of Year 2 was, we couldn’t decide so we said all of it. Year 2 is great! Gook luck to the boys and girls in Year 1. From the Year 2 Dolphins

has been a wonderful and enthusiastic class this year. We have had lots of fun and worked very hard too. They make me laugh and have made my first year at the BSA a memorable and happy one. Thank you. Mrs. Bennett

This year we have had excursions to MARQ museum and Lucentum. We found out how the Romans came to Alicante and saw the ruins of the old Roman city here. We went to the traffic park to learn road safety as well as to have great fun riding bikes and goKarts. We have had a few special days this year; we celebrated Peace Day in January and Earth Day and St George’s Day in April. We recently had a visit from a scientist who set up a planetarium in school. We all thought it was brilliant. The scientist spoke to us about the earth and its atmosphere. Then we had a good think about how we can help look after the planet. We also had visits from the dentist and the voluntary ambulance service, which we all really enjoyed. We love drama in 3B. Each term we have written our own plays and poems and we have adapted stories to perform for all the Year 3 and 4 classes in assembly. We also performed in a musical called ‘African Story’, where we dressed up as crocodiles.

have thoroughly enjoyed my year with 3P, and have had lots of pleasure and fun with them. They are lovely children, who are kind, caring and thoughtful towards each other. They are full of interest and enthusiasm for learning, with enquiring minds, and have worked hard to learn new skills, concepts and information. They have brought in many interesting and informative things from home to share with the class. We have learned together how to use the Interactive Whiteboard, – we are all now quite expert, and thoroughly enjoy using it. Year 3P have been fabulous, and it has been a pleasure to teach them. I shall miss them next year, but will always have very fond memories of them. It can be difficult to make the transition from Infants to Juniors, but by their behaviour, attitude and work it is clear that they have developed and matured, and are now ready for Year 4. Mrs. Pilkington

s a last minute addition to the King’s College Alicante staff, it was always going to be a tough year. From the start, however, it was more than clear that I had hit the jackpot with 3S. Lively, imaginative, creative, loving, entertaining…the list is endless. Each child shining in their own special way and every day bringing a new surprise. From “precious gems” to woodlice in designer boxes, upturned cream cakes to yet another fallen tooth. Each morning, I knew something just wonderful would be waiting to kick-start our day. Whilst many of 3S have received certificates or prizes for success in art, academic tasks, behaviour or sport, this article is our own personal celebration of each and every member of the group. Their achievements through 2008/9 have been an inspiration. I have included photos of the drama assembly because they have been, perhaps, my favourite activity with the group. They provided the children with the opportunity to design, create, improvise, and ultimately present their masterpieces to the world. It was our perfect excuse to cast aside pens and paper, so that imagination and interpretation could have their day. Mrs. Smee

Our Favourite Memories from Year 3 “I liked all the fun things like ICT, Easter cards and word searches. I liked Maths too, subtraction, addition and partitioning.” Jorge E “I’ve really liked Year 3, especially all the festivals. My favourite was Book Day. I came as Pervinca, a character from ‘Fairy Oak’.” Lara “School Council. We worked very hard on the ‘Zones’ and the environment. It was fun because they gave us treats like biscuits.” Selene “Book Day, dressing up, reading, Hot seating, book covers, book fairs. Well, I enjoyed it all!” Uma “We have been doing lots of assemblies. We have practised some plays, brought props and shared them all. I enjoyed this year very much.” Aitana

“I liked it when me and my sister rescued a kitten called Vela. She was very little, but she ate a lot of food and milk and she played in the garden.” Sophie “I liked all the trips-they were fantastic. First we went to Lucentum where we saw all the ruins the Romans had left. Then we visited a museum called Marq.” Jorge P “This year I loved ICT. We did Science Clips, which was my favourite thing of all. Also, we did Granny’s Garden and my partner was German.” Sergio “I liked the trips to Lucentum and the Marq museum. I also liked the Traffic Park with the bicycles.” Carlos “I had a lot of fun down in ICT, playing on Granny’s Garden. I liked typing a sentence on the computer.” Jorge M “I liked Easter because we made beautiful cards, baskets, rabbits, wordsearches and puzzles” Paula “All of Year 3 brought toys to play with in Golden Time and books if someone wanted to read. I liked doing chess.” Hugo “School Council. We put toys in the playground. We showed the dads and mums the children’s work and we gave them food and coffee.” Guillermo “In Geography, I have enjoyed seeing the atlases. I liked helping the environment and learning about England and Spain” German “I liked Easter, because we made cards and a basket with a rabbit inside. I liked ICT as well, because we did Granny’s Garden, Science Clips and wrote sentences about our lives.” Sara “I liked Art because it was fun, like the competitions and the Anglo-Saxon swords and shields. I liked it when we did the Rolly Poly Scrolly.” Patricia “I loved the experiments because we planted plants. If you did them, you would stay playing all day.” Clara “Golden Time is my favourite time. You can take toys or books and you can do anything that you want it.” Pablo “I loved showing things and birthday celebrations. I showed things from London, England.” Florian “ In Golden Time we played with toys. I enjoyed Lego and the activities of Golden Time.” Alejandro “In Art we had some competitions like the book cover competition and the Christmas Card competition. We also made beautiful tree pictures and put them on the wall.” Santiago

“At Halloween, we dressed up and did many activities. I dressed like a devil and we listened to scary stories.” Marta “I loved it when we did Art, like pictures of the mountains, the book competition and when I designed the kitchen for ‘The Little Red Hen’.” Daniel “I loved doing Art with Mrs Smee and all my class. My favourite thing was doing painting.” Guadalupe

Primary Hello, I´m Mrs Hughes,

Y5H

What a fun filled busy year 5H have had. It has been a delight and pleasure to teach my class and I am only sad that I can’t spend another year with them. I admire them most for their caring nature and how they treat each other. They are all developing into mature and independent individuals with a great attitude to life that will stand them in good stead for the future. 5H, we have had great fun together and I will miss you. With so many memories to treasure, all that is left for me to do, is to wish you good luck in Year 6. You are all talented individuals and I am sure you will be successful in all your endeavours.

It is time to say goodbye and good luck to the class I have taught for the past two years. When they first came to me at the start of Year 4

they were fresh-faced and nervous; now, at the end of Year 5, it is astonishing to see how much they have grown up. They are confident, inquisitive, entertaining and thoughtful. I will take great memories from my time with them and will follow their progress with pride as they move through the school.

Mr. Manning Fox

Trip to Santa Pola by Daniela

First we visited a natural park where a man showed us where salt comes from, and we saw minerals, flamingos, ducks and insects. Each time I learned something new, interesting and different I felt very proud of myself. “Time to eat” said Mr. Manning Fox, I was so hungry that I rushed into the line trying to be the first one to receive the food! I gobbled my food so I could finish and go to the beach.

The beach

Our first task was to make a crocodile made of sand; “easy, peasy, lemon squeezy”, I said to myself. We went in groups of five, I think our crocodile was the best. And we won five housepoints! I will never forget that trip…

The MARQ museum

In year 5M I enjoyed going to the impressive MARQ museum and seeing lots of beautiful statues. We also saw some magnificent pottery made by the Greeks. The statue I most liked was a man throwing a discus. It was hard to believe it was made with marble! After we had a sandwich for lunch. By Ivanna Mercado

The Planetarium

At the planetarium we watched a DVD in English of the Solar System in the roof of the inflatable tent. We went in a tent with a shape of a planet and then the class looked alarmed when they saw how the Moon was formed, it was made by a collision between the Earth and Mars. The man that was there showed us a meteor that was discovered in 1986 in Argentina, it was as heavy as a television but only as big as a camera! In the end, we left the tent, before it started to squash us. By Andrea

The Theatre

We were in class working and Mr Manning Fox said “It´s time to go to the theatre”. We were going on the bus, when we were in the theatre the people were singing, the play was called “El Fantasma de Canterville” and there were 4 or 5 actors, I liked a lot there were lot’s of special effects. After when the play had finished we came back to school, I was the last one to get off the bus. By Laura Avellán

Greek Day

In year 5 I enjoyed Ancient Greek day. First the girls did cooking and the boys had Greek lessons. The girls made small cakes with chocolate and cereals. After about one hour we made a kind of medal for the Olympic Games that we were going to do. Then we ate Ancient Greek lunch, first we had Greek salad and then we had meat on little sticks or lasagne and we had yoghurt with honey. Then we had the Olympic Games and we did long jump, javelin, sprint and discus. The teachers gave the medals out and I won the 1st place in the javelin, the 2nd place in the long jump and the 3rd place in the discus. Finally we put on our play that we wrote earlier, I was in a group with Laura, Andrea, Pablo, Yong Le and Daniel. Our play was about a dog with 3 heads who lived in the Ancient Greek time and his eye was hurting. I really enjoyed the day and I will never forget it. By Bente Eggink

atching the children in my class mature into creative, thinking individuals has been the highlight of 2009. Their responses to my daily questions have been quirky and well thought out. I have been pleased at the level of concentration and hard work that each child has put into their studies. I will miss each and every one of them and wish them well as they continue their exciting journey through life and education. But enough from me, let’s hear what the children have to say about their time in year 6.

Miss. S. Manners

Our Favourite Memories from Year 6 I loved Halloween because everybody dressed as scarily as possible. I dressed as a vampire with a long black cape and fake blood. It was difficult to concentrate on my lessons because the blood kept peeling and made my face itch. Takuma

Science Week was exciting and great fun. I love science and hope to be a neurologist when I grow up, so the work we did on the different areas of the brain was interesting. I learnt that certain parts of the brain are used for taste and smell. It was fascinating. Cati

What I most enjoyed was the Christmas play, when all the shepherds (including me) started dancing around the stage. A fun part of Year 6 was when we talked about the Moors and Christians in assembly and Javier Diaz dressed as a moor. Javier C

I liked the Christmas play because I got the part I wanted but at first I found it difficult to remember my lines. At the end I succeeded and I felt happy that I had done so well. I am now a much more confident person. Jesus

I loved making an electric car with my table group. We had to make an object that used a circuit with a bulb and a switch so we decided to make a car that we called Googy. It had lights at the front and the back. We were going to include a motor and sound but it became too difficult. I have loved Year 6. Nicole

When I first started in 6M I found writing in English very difficult but I have worked very hard and have enjoyed my lessons. I now have more confidence in writing. Alejandro

I really liked Science Week because we spent the whole week learning about science and I especially enjoyed the mad scientists who taught us how to make soap. I will be leaving the school in June, which makes me very sad but I will be taking some fantastic memories with me. Joe During the winter term we were visited by two authors called The Two Steves. I really enjoyed their visit. They were funny and we got to know them really well. I came away with the desire to read more of their books and to write my own stories. Silvia Forces week was fantastic. We learnt all about Isaac Newton, gravity, up thrust and lift and how to use a Newton meter. We put our apples on Maria and turned her into a tree...a Newton tree. Carolina When we were visiting El Huerto del Cura in Elche we saw lots of beutiful peacocks. They were a bit scary, and we had to run past them to get to the other side of the park. It was exciting. Gracia

One of the things that I have enjoyed in Year 6 was when Laura, Cati and I made a robot. We have done a lot of art work especially building things from paper and card. I have learnt how to construct a circuit and how to make glue from milk with Mr Smith from secondary. I am looking forward to working in the lab next year. Javier D What I liked the most in Year 6 was writing stories, PE and maths. Also I liked drawing landscapes with Miss Manners. Hector

29

Of all the things we have learnt this year the subject I have enjoyed the most is History. I have especially enjoyed learning about all the things that have happened since 1948. I hope that in secondary I can study similar topics. Aitana During the second performance of the Christmas play I could smell food being cooked in the kitchens, my tummy was rumbling. My voice was losing power and I could not move. I couldn’t wait until the play was over and I could eat one of the kitchen’s excellent meals. Yongmin What I liked the most was when the science workshop people came to school and showed us how to make soap. Unfortunately I dropped the cup and most of the soap fell onto my table. Miss Manners was not pleased. I will miss answering Percy Pirate’s questions. Isabel I dressed as Pippi Longstocking for world Book Day. At first I was a little nervous because I thought people would laugh. My teacher kept saying how weird it was teaching a girl with huge plaits sticking up from her head and sitting next to a horse (my friend Gracia was dressed as Tio the horse) we all had a great day. Paula I appreciated Year 6 in many ways. I remember that Cati, Javier D and I made a robot with glowing eyes that refused to light up until we changed the bulb. I enjoyed our trips, World Book Day and the many hilarious moments in class. I thought that Year 6 would be a special year for me...and it has been. Laura

The Christmas production was fun but there were hard things like learning lines and acting. It turned out fine in the end. Aaron Year 6 was great! Full of fun and excitement. I enjoyed a lot of things such as; trips, performances, visits and special days. I’m sort of looking forward to secondary but at the same time I’m nervous. Year 6 has passed very quickly and I’m sad it’s all over. Sarah

Secondary Things I remember: Juan

I remember when I came to secondary I didn’t know where each class was but as time passed I knew where the classes were. I have enjoyed sport trips like the sports day and the swimming gala.

Elena

Jemma

Going into secondary was hard at first but it wasn’t like we thought. Everyone said we would get so much homework and it would be really hard. But it’s not. We have a brilliant form tutor, Miss Castro. 7C is the best form ever!

We did a super match of pibote (a ball game) there were 4 of us trying to hit the ball really hard, but no-one was out for ages.

Ornella

I remember the first day at secondary – I was so nervous and worried but you do get used to it! It has been a great year.

Hana Thomas

One day we went to El Real Club de Regatas in Alicante. We did lots of things and we had a good time.

When we went on the art trip I loved going on to the beach and making sand castles it was fun. When we did Room 13 the play I played a mean teacher.

Victor

The thing I remember most about year 7 bringing a cake for Miss Castro’s birthday! The subjects I like are Performing Arts, P.E. and Art. I have improved a lot in English and Sociales.

Paula

Kyle

Y7C

I thought secondary was going to be really hard but it wasn’t too bad. I have actually enjoyed being in Year 7 with all my friends.

I enjoyed Sports Day a lot but I had pulled muscles for four days! We performed a play in English called Room 13 and it was great fun. I think we are great actors in Year 7.

I remember when I arrived at secondary and I felt really weird, as if I didn’t want to be in secondary school. But now, I want to stay here!

Moriah

When I first arrived in secondary I found it really hard having to be organized every single day. Also it was an extra challenge for me because I changed school, home, friends and country. It made me appreciate how relaxed primary was.

Harry

I was quite nervous going into year 7. I thought I was going to get lost. I have got lost quite a few times but now everyone knows where to go.

Daniel

I was quite worried about coming up to secondary but it wasn’t anything to worry about! I am in a great form – I am happy with my form tutor.

Alfonso

I enjoyed Sports Day and the other trips we have done. In Sports Day I remember when my team Columbus was in third place behind Gaudi and we won all the relays and we moved up into second place.

35 Form Tutor Mrs. Carrie Castro

I will always remember the filming of Room 13, Year 7 love acting. I also really enjoyed Sports Day.

Carmen

I remembered when I first came to secondary, we were all scared but now it is part of our lives. I enjoyed Sports Day, swimming gala and those competitions the most but the school trips were good as well. Room 13 was really fun!

Alejandro

I think secondary is one of the best places to be because we do cooler things and it’s a lot of fun. A totally cool experience.

Secondary Our memories… Lydia Kay

Lucia Doran Santamaria

Luis Prieto Reig

Fernando Martinez Bueno

My favorite subject is performing arts. It´s so cool, because we play fun games that help us to concentrate. We have lots of fun.

On the trip to R.C.R.A we did rowing, fishing and saling. In rowing, we did a race and my team won. In Fishing we learned how to throw and how to fish. In Sailing I was with Carlos, Fernando, Mario and Juan Jose in a J22. I liked it a lot.

My favourite teacher is Mrs. Bowers because she makes our classes fun and enjoyable. We do lots of activities, and games but we still learn, we sometimes do competitions, and more!

We went to the Alicante Sailing Club. We went by bus and when we got there we were put into 3 groups: yellow group, red group and green group. We went on a J22 boat and we were lucky because it was very windy.

At Sports Day there were different events 75m, 100m, 200m, 800m, 1500m, long jump, relay, discus, javelin and rounders. Everyone particpated to win points for their house. The winning house was Darwin then Columbus then Gaudi and finally Orwell.

In November all of KS3 went over to a nearby swimming pool and we swam for our houses (Gaudi (the best), Orwell, Columbus and Darwin). Darwin won the swimming gala but all the teams did well. Columbus won races, Orwell won races and Gaudi won races too. There were lots of different competitions like relays, 30m, and backstroke. Everyone loved the races and overall I think everyone had lots of fun swimming for their houses.

Ashley Allen

Y7G Hello my name is Karl and I am going to speak about my first day in school. I had a few friends I already knew , so it made it a lot easier to get used to the school. After a month I was settled in and happy and I had a few more friends! Secondary is really cool!

Carlos Sanchez Vicent

This year we went on an orienteering trip and my group was Tom and Moriah. We came second. It was great fun and Lucia, Karl and Ethan came first. I enjoyed it a lot.

Elisa Chen

I came to the school in Year 7 and I made lots of friends. I am happy to be in the school. My favourite subject is P.E.

Marta Bonmatí Morales

My favourite teacher is Miss Castro because she teaches me my favourite subject which is art. I’ve liked art since I was a really little girl.

Helllo, my name is Ethan and I am about to tell you about my favourite teacher and subject. My favourite subject was always P.E, and my favourite teachers were Mr. Nutter and Mrs. Goode. They have always been kind and funny and they have always been my favourite teachers.

On 1st of March we went to Real Club de Regatas. We did rowing and sailing. It was great fun. Also we did fishing. I liked the rowing.

Aline Eggink

My friends are: Lydia, Elisa, Marta, Lucia, Irene, Victoria, Moriah, Elena, Ornella, Hana, Jemma, Carmen and Paula. They are very helpul, funny and kind. They helped me when I didn´t understand something and they were always friendly to me.

At lunch time in secondary we do activities. We all do drama on Mondays and Wednesdays and we used to do dancing on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On our favorite day, that’s Friday, we do football. There are lots more activities to do at lunchtime, like badminton, table tennis, football, dancing and drama.

Irene Nicolas Zapata

Mario Beltrán

It was cool on the trip to Sax and Villena. I really enjoyed it. We visited the Sax and Villena castles. It was very interesting and we all had loads of fun.

We did a swimming gala. All of us had loads of fun participating. At the end Darwin won, but everyone had loads of fun.

Karl

On Tuesdays I go to guitar as an after school activity. I really like it and I hope someday I can play it perfectly! I also go to German though it´s a really difficult language.

Year 8 rock This year I have had the pleasure of tutoring 8K, formerly 8E. Filling Miss Epps’ place has not been an easy task. As a group, 8K is a little like a busy whirlwind that tends to swarm at times like a hive of productive bees. These are tallented individuals and has their own quirky and bubbly personalities. I have enjoyed morning conversations with 8K as they have saved me the trouble of having to read the daily news; their regular media reports on local and international affairs have kept me up to date. Obdulio, Guillermo, Pablo and Carlos Ribes regularly share the latest football and rugby scores. 8K is a fantastic group of talented individuals and I hope they all have a wonderful break now that school’s out for summer.

Secondary Highlights of the Year The highlight of my year was when I learnt how to draw faces in art. Jessica The best part of the year for me was when I performed at the school concert. Hugh Year 10 has been a busy year because of next year’s IGCSEs. This year’s highlight must be the upcoming work experience in June. Aleksi The highlight of my year was going on the art trip to Murcia. Charlie One of the best parts of the year was the geography trip to the Isle of Wight. When we first got there we were not sure about the place but later on we made friends with the other schools and were sad to see them leave. Lucy Paris was amazing! Especially the last day. We first went to Disneyland which was great. Harriet The best moment of this year was when I first met Mr Birrell. Carmen The best thing this year was when we went to Paris with Miss Mare. Marie I really enjoyed the adventure to the Isle of Wight because we had a great time and we got muddy. Jamie The thing I have most enjoyed about the year was going on the Geography trip to the Isle of Wight because we had a great time and had fun getting lost! Kiefer The best moments are simply studying Maths! Ander The moment I most enjoyed was when in France I went on the Space Mountain in Disneyland 8 times. Artur I have enjoyed form times with wise Mr Birrell telling us how loud we were. Anis I have really enjoyed this year. The highlights were the Isle of Wight and of course, engaging in my daily routine of studying and healthy eating. Kalim For me it was simply coming back to school after the Summer to start some serious study. I do want to succeed in life. Matthias

I have enjoyed becoming more mature this year and appreciating intellectual debates with my peers and teachers. will always remember this year 2008-2009 as the first year I became a form tutor. From my perspective, being able to get to know my students better has been rewarding. Throughout this year, we have studied different topics which have helped year 11F to appreciate aspects of our society and world better. Each of the students brought different articles that we have debated during tutorials. We studied subjects such as the danger of drugs, racism and intolerance. We all agreed this year has been very positive for all of us. Félix Francisco

A Great Year I remember when Mme Maire gave us loads of surprise exams and she got really cross because we all got As and A*. The whole class laughed because we all thought that it was very funny. Ivan

I remember the first Sports Day when it rained. The Sports Day was cancelled and we had to stay in class all day long. No one knew that it was cancelled so we came with PE kit. Even the teachers came dressed for sport. It was a hard day. Jaime

I am sad because I won´t see the people I have got used to after my two years at this school even if some of them are annoying. I made some very good friends. I would like to thank all my teachers for the help they have offered me. Rosie

This year was very important for our future as we have to do well in the IGCSEs. Last year was easier compared to this one as we did not have exam stress. Next year we will have fewer subjects. Miguel

This year has been a good year because I have learnt new things and also I have new teachers, so that is good. I found this year more difficult but the best part is that I have been with my friends. Ana

I expect the sixth form will be the best time of my life. Although lots of studying needs to be done. I will be able to access the sixth form common room. Alejandra

Two weeks I won’t forget were the weeks of the mock exams. They were the most stressful weeks of my school life. Luckily they ended and thanks to our great behaviour, they gave us sweets. Manuel

For me this year was good. It was a bit more difficult than last year, but I had enjoyed the year with my friends Itziar and Ana. Laura

I think Year 12 and Year 13 will be a new era starting from zero. KS4 was great, year 10 was an easy year but in year 11 it was harder with the IGCSEs at the end of the year. Miguel Ángel

I am quite new to this school, and I have had a wonderful year. I expect sixth form will be as good as this one. The best thing is that everyone is very friendly. Ana

ear 12 is often a difficult time for students. They have only just finished one set of important exams in Y11 before having to return in September and being bombarded with material for the next set. Despite the stresses of A-level exams in both January and June, Year 12 still manage to greet me with a smile each morning at registration. I think the abiding memory of this year for many students will be exams and coursework. But that doesn’t mean that there wasn’t time for plenty of other stuff along the way. I think everyone took something from the judo classes at the start of the year, even if it was just the satisfaction of inflicting physical violence on their tutor without fear of repercussions. I was also extremely impressed with the group’s enthusiasm for fundraising. Events such as Halloween Day raised a lot of money and were enjoyed by all. As Y12 becomes Y13 the students will have to start thinking about their university and career choices. With this in mind I have started my very own careers advice bureau to offer them my pearls of wisdom. Mr. Roberts

I will become...

Jack: After a stint as a rugby tackle bag, Jack will go on to study anthropology and set out on a mission to discover the world’s most insular and primitive tribes. Looking back in later life he will realise that this was inspired by his Y12 geography trip to the Isle of Wight. Merce, Sara and Sarah: Will discover cut-throat business instincts and start a mergers and acquisitions company in Manhattan. Jo: Will study maths, specialising in algebraic geometry and will go on to solve Hodge’s conjecture. Isabel: Will enjoy any job that involves telling people what to do.

May: Will become an artist and travel the world. Jordan: Will become an East End gangster and later gain fame for his gritty autobiography ‘Hard as Nayles’. Eduardo: Will become the subject of ground-breaking medical research after doctors discover that he has the world’s slowest pulse. Sergio: Will study computer programming at university and create a best-selling video game called ‘Blood and Guts III: Revenge of the Gun Totting Zombie Maniac’

Sol: With such a cheery outlook Sol should get a job as a life coach. Later on she will bring out a self-help book entitled ‘Smile Your Way to Success!’ Toni: As a distinguished etymologist, Toni will re-write the Oxford English Dictionary after deciding it doesn’t have nearly enough words in. Cristina: Will become a translator. Or maybe a skier. Possibly both. Although probably not at the same time.

Max: Will become an architect. His first project will be to file down the sharp edge of the OAMI building after a damning health and safety report.

Anton: Will be a world class tennis player, obviously. Sam: Will go on to study chemistry and devote his life to developing the perfect hair gel. Krisha: After finishing her PhD in Early Modern History, Krisha will go on to dethrone David Starkey as the nation’s favorite TV historian. Claudia: Will become Spain’s foremost pet psychologist. Carrielee: Argumentative yet persuasive, Carrielee would make a great lawyer. Or she might end up hosting her own talk show. Emma: Another hard-nosed businesswoman, Emma will become chairman of Darlington Football Club.
